Astros SP Lance McCullers continues inconsistent pattern

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(8/30/2015) Astros starter Lance McCullers got off to a slow start, walking three of the game's first four batters and then couldn't get back on track in a loss to the Twins on Sunday.

McCullers would allow only four hits and three runs before departing after six innings, but Houston was held off the scoreboard until the ninth inning.

McCullers (5-5) went 0-2 in three August starts, allowing 11 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings.

Astros SP Lance McCullers makes MLB return with strong outing

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(8/23/2015) Astros starter Lance McCullers, who was recalled from Double-A to make Sunday's start, was impressive in spot duty, tossing seven strong innings against the Dodgers and earning a no-decision when Houston rallied for an extra-inning win.

McCullers, whose last outing for Houston was a 1/3-inning, six-run disaster on Aug. 3, was much more effective Sunday, scattering eight hits over seven innings while striking out eight and walking none.

McCullers (5-4) figures to be part of the Astros' rotation going forward as they push for a division title.

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(8/19/2015) The Astros will call up pitcher Lance McCullers in order to start Sunday's game against the Dodgers, the team announced.

McCullers was demoted in early August after posting a 3.17 ERA over 76 2/3 innings this season. With McCullers starting Sunday, the team will turn to pitchers Mike Fiers on Friday and Scott Kazmir on Saturday.

Astros close to recalling Lance McCullers

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(8/18/2015) The Astros are close to bringing Lance McCullers back to the Major Leagues, per MLB.com.

Manager A.J. Hinch said the rookie would be returning soon and likely return to the rotation in September.

McCullers was sent to the minor leagues to limit his innings for the season. He pitched three innings for Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday, allowing one hit and striking out five.

"Getting him back on the mound in Corpus is a big step towards getting him to finish the season in the mix," Hinch said. "We've got 40-plus games to sort out. He's been one of our best pitchers throughout the course of the year. ... I make no promises on how it's all going to play out, but he could factor into the rest of the year after we cleared a couple of weeks off of his season to allow him to be a factor."

Astros' Hinch says McCullers likely to return during next homestand

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/12/2015) Astros manager A.J. Hinch said rookie starting pitcher Lance McCullers will likely return to the rotation during a 10-game homestand, which begins Friday against the Tigers.

"We have a pretty good plan in place for him," Hinch told MLB Network Radio on Wednesday. "He's likely to come back up during our next homestand."

McCullers has not made a start in the minors since being demoted Aug. 3.

Astros prepping young pitchers Velasquez, McCullers for stretch run

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(8/7/2015) The Astros seem to be defining the future roles for young hurlers Vincent Velasquez and Lance McCullers . Both pitchers were recently sent to Double-A Corpus Christi after spending considerable time with the Astros this season.

Velasquez will continue to pitch out of the bullpen as he has been doing since moving from the rotation at the end of July (his last start came on July 21 against the Red Sox). He threw 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief on Saturday before being sent down to Double-A.

"We could always stretch him back out if we need to, but we've got a few starter options," manager A.J. Hinch said, per MLB.com. "He brings a lot of dynamic to the bullpen, too. It's not just about the innings. It's also about what we feel he can do for us in the final stretch of the season. Coming out of the 'pen, he could be a little dynamic velocity-wise than what we have."

Meanwhile, McCullers was sent down earlier this week after a horrid start on Monday. The idea was for him to go down to the minors and rest, in an effort to preserve his innings for the stretch run. He is expected to return to the Astros' rotation at some point this season.

"We're really focused in on conditioning and rest and recovery [at Corpus Christi]," Hinch said. "As it starts to trend towards the time we're going to considering bring him back, we'll obviously increase pitching activity and get him ready to start again for us."

Astros' Lance McCullers optioned following disaster start Monday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(8/3/2015) Astros rookie right-hander Lance McCullers had his toughest start as a big-leaguer in Monday's 12-9 loss to the Rangers. McCullers was able to just one out in the first inning before being taken out of the game. He allowed six runs on seven hits, including two-run home run by Shin-Soo Choo. The only out he recorded was a strikeout of Josh Hamilton.

It was a rough outing for the youngster, who drops to 5-4. He had been solid for the better part of the season, as he entered play having allowed more than three runs just once in 13 big-league starts.

The Astros announced McCullers was optioned to the minors following the game. It's likely a move get a fresher arm on the roster, and it's possible McCullers returns for his next time through the rotation.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

"Just pounded the zone early," McCullers said, per MLB.com. "They started getting pretty aggressive. [Catcher Jason] Castro and I talked and tried to use that to our advantage. Whatever pitch I throw, try throwing it for a strike. Let them kind of, you know, force the pace of the game."

McCullers (3-0) showcased his considerable upside in the win, throwing 73 of his 107 pitches for strikes. He retired 15 straight batters at one point before surrendering a single with two outs in the ninth inning, but he buckled down after a meeting with manager A.J. Hinch on the mound and struck out the final batter of the game.

"When he gets ahead, he's very, very difficult to pick how he's going to attack you to finish you, but he finished hitters very well," Hinch said. "Obviously, 11 [strikeouts] is going to indicate that a little bit. He was very, very good tonight."

McCullers owns a 1.88 ERA and 29:6 K:BB ratio in 24 innings. He's scheduled to square off with the White Sox in Chicago on Monday.

Astros P Lance McCullers fares well in major-league debut

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(5/19/2015) Astros pitcher Lance McCullers impressed in his major-league debut, throwing five strikeouts in a 2-1 loss to the Athletics.

McCullers, sporting some Batman baseball cleats, allowed only one earned run in 4 2/3 innings. This gives him a 1.93 ERA to start his career. He walked three batters and gave up three hits in 93 pitches.

"I thought he hung in there pretty well," manager A.J. Hinch said after the game, per MLB.com. "First-night adrenaline pumping, he had his pitches, made some really good pitches for strikeouts. And he had a swing-and-miss strikeout on every pitch -- fastball, his big breaking ball and his changeup. So you know he'll get more pitch efficient as he gets away from the first-game adrenaline, but all in all, we obviously want to get five [innings] out of him. He came close to that, but for a major-league debut, with all the attention on him, I thought he handled himself very well."

McCullers was relieved by Joe Thatcher, who was credited with the loss.
