Pirates pitcher Kyle McPherson 'keeping the ball down'

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/14/2013) Pirates rotation candidate Kyle McPherson got back on track as he made quick work of the Phillies on Thursday afternoon. He had allowed four runs through three innings of work in his previous outing. McPherson, who made his fourth start of the spring, cruised through five innings, allowing just four hits in a 2-1 loss. He held hitters to six ground ball outs and had a strike out and no walks.  The outing lowered his ERA to 5.68.

"I wanted to focus on keeping the ball down, and I had tremendous success with that," McPherson said. "I got some early contact and it worked in my favor today with balls on the ground and some fly balls we could handle."

McPherson, in contention for the fifth spot in the rotation, needed just 12 pitches to finish his scoreless innings. He also showed no indication of the shoulder issue that limited him during the offseason and cut short his appearance in the Dominican Winter League. "For Kyle's first time out, our biggest interest was in the up and down twice," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "Obviously, we're going to monitor him and not give him too many innings. We've got plenty of time to get his pitch count where it needs to be."

"He's throwing his mounds and is on time with everything."
