Andre Rienzo demoted to bullpen role

Scott Carroll might replace Andre Rienzo in rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/22/2014) White Sox manager Robin Ventura said he still hasn't decided what to do with starting pitcher Andre Rienzo, who lost a fifth straight start Saturday at Minnesota. Ventura might replace Rienzo in the rotation with Scott Carroll, who is pitching out of the bullpen.

"That would be the option is to flip-flop," Ventura said, per MLB.com. "Right now, I don't know if you can necessarily just put Andre out in the bullpen. The way Scotty throws strikes, you like if you are going to bring a guy in out of the bullpen, he's going to be able to do what Scotty has done."

Carroll, who is 1-3 with a 6.15 ERA, has a 1.83 ERA in 19 2/3 innings as a reliever. Carroll said adding the cutter to his repertoire has helped his transition to the bullpen.

"Adding the cutter has been a big pitch. It has helped a lot with lefties," Carroll said of the pitch he incorporated after his May 19 start in Kansas City. "We came back home and started playing catch with it and it has been feeling good and it has been a big pitch for me."

He will try to bounce back Friday on the road against the Angels.

Andre Rienzo suffers first loss Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Rienzo (4-1) hadn't given up more than four runs in a start this season, but he watched four runners cross the plate in the second inning before the Yankees added another on a wild pitch in the fourth. He owns a 4.39 ERA and 32:18 K:BB ratio in 41 innings. Rienzo is slated to face the Padres Saturday.

Don't put too much faith in Andre Rienzo

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/21/2014) Since he entered the starting rotation April 23, the White Sox's Andre Rienzo is the 17th-highest scoring starting pitcher in Head-to-Head leagues. This is an undeniable fact.

He has four wins during that stretch, which is also undeniable, as is the fact that wins are of the utmost value to Fantasy owners. Now for some opinion: Rienzo won't continue to win games at this rate if he continues to pitch like he has so far.

It's not a fact, but it's based on several. For one, he's not a bat-misser. His 6.3 strikeouts per nine innings would rank in the bottom third of the league if he had the innings to qualify. For another, he doesn't throw enough strikes to get away with it. His 4.0 walks per nine innings would rank in the bottom 10th of the league if he had the innings to qualify. His FIP, which straddles the line between fact and opinion by estimating what a pitcher's ERA would be with luck removed from the equation, is a meaty 5.36.

Granted, his last two starts have been better, but judging by his performance in 10 starts last year and the way most of his minor-league career went, I'm trusting the facts that forecast the future for Rienzo over the ones that chronicle the past.

Andre Rienzo strikes out eight in win vs. Royals

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Rienzo (4-0) gave up a two-run double in the second inning but performed well over the rest of his start. He owns a 4.00 ERA and 25:16 K:BB ratio in 36 innings. Rienzo is tentatively scheduled to face the Yankees Sunday, though the White Sox may be getting ace Chris Sale back this weekend.

Andre Rienzo gives up two runs vs. A's Wednesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/14/2014) White Sox pitcher Andre Rienzo didn't factor into the decision Wednesday after surrendering two earned runs on two hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out four in his team's 4-2 win over the A's.

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Andre Rienzo pulled in the fifth inning Sunday

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/4/2014) After two straight wins, White Sox starting pitcher Andre Rienzo couldn't even go five innings Sunday against the Indians. He was in line for the loss before Chicago rallied late for a 4-3 win.

Rienzo was clinging to a 1-0 lead before George Kottaras tied the game with a solo home run leading off the third inning. Cleveland took the lead on Lonnie Chisenhall's two-out RBI single later in the inning.

Cleveland went up 3-1 when Kottaras parked his second home run off Rienzo in the fourth inning. Rienzo was lifted in the fifth inning after issuing a two-out walk to David Murphy.

The right-hander was charged with three runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out two in 4 2/3 innings. His ERA rose from 4.05 to 4.50. His next scheduled start is for Friday against the Diamondbacks.

White Sox send down four

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The White Sox are woefully short behind the plate. Unproven Tyler Flowers is set as the starter and Adrian Nieto his backup, though the team has been rumored to be looking for an upgrade via trade.

Andre Rienzo given outside chance to make rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/17/2014) White Sox manager Robin Ventura said starting pitcher Andre Rienzo has some work to do if he wants to make the opening day rotation, according to MLB.com.

"Right now, he's probably sitting outside of the rotation, could work his way in there," Ventura said.

Ventura pointed to Rienzo getting his command problems under control as the key to making a push to join the rotation. Rienzo walked 28 batters in 56 innings during his 10 starts for Chicago last season.

"He came up and started out pretty good but command was an issue for points when he was pitching," Ventura said. "He can work on that. I'd say he's probably on the outside with a chance to work his way into it."
