Tigers option four, re-assign four Wednesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/12/2014) The Tigers optioned pitchers Casey Crosby and Melvin Mercedes to Triple-A Toledo and pitcher Jose Valdez and catcher Ramon Cabrera to Double-A Erie Wednesday.

The team also re-assigned catcher James McCann and pitchers Robbie Ray, Duane Below and Drew VerHagen to minor-league camp Wednesday.

Melvin Mercedes receives 'good' demotion to Toledo

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3/12/2014) Tigers 23-year-old right-hander Melvin Mercedes has been demoted - but it was a wonderful demotion for him. Rather than sending him to Double-A Erie, they banished him to Triple-A Toledo, where he could serve as the closer.

The Tigers could groom Mercedes for that spot. They signed 39-year-old Joe Nathan in the offseason for that role, but will need to groom a closer for the future. Mercedes, however, has proven neither consistent nor a premier strikeout pitcher at the minor league level.

Tigers strike players from roster

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/11/2013) The Detroit Tigers continued shaping their roster for the upcoming season and announced the following moves Monday: catcher Ramon Cabrera and shortstop Dixon Machado were assigned to Double-A Erie; pitcher Melvin Mercedes was sent to Class A Lakeland while outfielder Daniel Fields and shortstop Eugenio Suarez were assigned to the team's minor-league camp.
