Keith Butler will require Tommy John surgery

(5/24/2014) Cardinals minor-league pitcher Keith Butler will require Tommy John surgery, according to MLB.com on Saturday. Butler experienced some elbow discomfort earlier in the week after posting 0.84 over 10 2/3 innings of work.

(5/21/2014) Cardinals pitcher Keith Butler, pitching at Triple-A Memphis, has been shut down due to discomfort in his right elbow, MLB.com reports Wednesday.

Butler, who opened the season in the Cardinals' bullpen before he was sent day in April, will undergo further testing to determine the extent of the injury. He has not pitched in over a week, as of Wednesday.

(3/28/2014) Cardinals reliever Keith Butler will claim the final spot remaining on the 25-man opening day roster, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  Butler allowed 15 runs on 21 hits while striking out 12 and walking seven over 13 2/3 innings pitched this spring.

(7/15/2013) Cardinals reliever Keith Butler has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis Monday.

The team has not announced a corresponding move, but Butler won't play until Friday. He will be replaced in the bullpen by Joe Kelly, at least the first time through the rotation post-All Star break. Butler has appeared in 12 games, with a 1.98 ERA.
