Yankees acquire Gonzalez Germen from Mets; DFA Preston Claiborne

(12/19/2014) The Yankees acquired right-handed pitcher Gonzalez Germen from the Mets in exchange for an undisclosed amount of cash, per the team's official website. To make room on 40-man roster, the Yankees designated right-handed pitcher Preston Claiborne for assignment.

Germen is 1-2 with a 4.31 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 54 career relief appearances.

(9/8/2014) The Mets will call up outfielder Bobby Abreu and reliever Gonzalez Germen at some point during their three-game series against the Rockies that begins Monday, according to MLB.com.

Abreu, who was released by the Mets earlier this season, hit .238 with a .667 OPS in 122 at-bats before then. Germen has compiled a 5.27 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in his 22 appearances in the majors this season.

Germen made eight appearances for the Mets after returning from the disabled list in early June but surrendered seven earned runs in 7 2/3 innings during that stretch. He owns a 4.78 ERA and 26:11 K:BB ratio in 26 1/3 innings.

Germen was out Monday with a flu-like illness, and it's apparent the team discovered it was more than a day-to-day issue upon examination. He hasn't pitched since May 5, so he'll be eligible to return early next week if healthy. Germen owns a 3.57 ERA and 17:5 K:BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings.

(4/19/2014) Mets pitcher Jose Valverde surrendered a three-run home run in a nonsave situation in his team's 7-5 loss to the Braves Saturday, and it appears manager Terry Collins is ready to make a change in the closer role, ESPNNewYork.com reports.

All three of the runs charged to Valverde were unearned due to an error the pitcher made on a bunt, and with three straight ugly outings to his credit, the closer sounds like he'll be removed from a ninth-inning role. Kyle Farnsworth and Gonzalez Germen seem like the most likely candidates to inherit closing duties.

(8/16/2013) With LaTroy Hawkins unavailable, Mets pitcher Gonzalez Germen took over and collected his first career save Thursday night against the Padres. The right-hander pitched the final two innings of a 4-1 win. He worked his way around two walks as he struck out three in two scoreless frames.

Germen became the first Met to have a two-inning save since Aaron Heilman 2008. The 25-year-old notched four saves at Triple-A Las Vegas this season. He owns a 2.60 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 17 1/3 innings of relief in the majors.

As he did not spend 10 days in the minors, a Mets player will be placed on the disabled list if Germen is activated, likely pitcher Shaun Marcum.

Germen is 3-3 with a 5.52 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 51:11 K:BB ratio and four saves in 44 innings over 35 appearances for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Among the group of cuts included Zack Wheeler, Hansel Robles, Reese Havens and Cesar Puello.
