Rockies' Gonzalez Germen fires three shutout innings on Friday

(7/10/2015) Making the first big-league start of his career, Rockies right-hander Gonzalez Germen held the Braves to one hit over three scoreless innings of work. He walked one and struck out one, but did not stick around long enough to factor in the decision, as the Rockies went on to win 5-3.

(7/10/2015) With David Hale no longer an option to start on Friday, the Rockies will turn to right-hander Gonzalez Germen to make the start against the Braves, according to MLB.com. The Rockies claimed Germen off waivers from the Cubs on Tuesday, but he has not pitched since July 2 with Triple-A Iowa. 

Germen has never started a big-league game in his three-year career, and his last minor-league start came in 2012 when he was in the Mets' system.

Hale, who was originally scheduled to start on Friday, was forced into action on Thursday after a two-hour rain delay knocked Kyle Kendrick from the game. Hale eventually left that game with a groin strain.


Rockies claim RP Gonzalez Germen off waivers Tuesday

(7/7/2015) The Rockies have claimed right-hander Gonzalez Germen off waivers from the Cubs on Tuesday, and optioned him to Triple-A Alburquerque. 

Germen was designated for assignment by the Cubs over the weekend. He made six appearances with Chicago at the end of April and beginning of May, posting a 7.50 ERA in six innings of relief.

First baseman Justin Morneau, out with a concussion, was also transferred to the 60-day DL on Tuesday.

(5/5/2015) The Cubs have called up pitcher Anthony Varvaro and optioned pitcher Gonzalez Germen to Triple-A, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago claimed Varvaro off waivers Sunday from the Red Sox. He posted a 4.09 ERA with eight strikeouts and six walks in 11 innings of work. German posted a 7.50 ERA with eight strikeouts and five walks in six innings of work for Chicago.


Cubs add Germen, option Szczur, transfer Turner to 60-day DL

(4/19/2015) The Cubs selected the contract of pitcher Gonzalez Germen and optioned outfielder Matt Szczur to Triple-A Iowa Sunday.

Germen made 25 appearances with the Cubs last season, posting a 4.75 ERA and 31:14 K:BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings. He tossed 4 2/3 hitless innings in Triple-A before being brought up but issued three walks while striking out five.

Szczur went 2 for 10 with three walks and two stolen bases before being optioned.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Germen, the Cubs also transferred pitcher Jacob Turner to the 60-day disabled list. He's recovering from a flexor strain and bone bruise in his elbow.

(3/26/2015) The Cubs announced Thursday they cut 12 players from major-league camp, including top catcher prospect Kyle Schwarber,who was reassigned to minor-league camp.

The other players reassigned to minor-league camp were pitchers Daniel Bard, Anthony Carter, Jorge De Leon, Gonzalez Germen and Francisley Bueno, infielder Chris Valaika, outfielders Albert Almora, Mike Baxter and Adron Chambers.

Pitcher Blake Parker and pitcher Joseph Ortiz were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

(2/13/2015) Cubs pitcher Gonzalez Germen has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Iowa, the team announced Friday. He will be a non-roster invitee to spring training.

Germen pitched for the Mets in 2014, posting a 4.75 ERA in 25 appearances. He added 31 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings pitched. He has a career 1-2 record in the majors with a 4.31 ERA and 64 strikeouts.

Germen was designated for assignment by the Rangers after the team acquired catcher Carlos Corporan from the Astros earlier this week. He posted a 4.75 ERA and 31:14 K:BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings with the Mets in 2014.

(1/21/2015) The Rangers acquired catcher Carlos Corporan from the Astros on Wednesday in exchange for pitcher Akeem Bostick. Rangers pitcher Gonzalez Germen was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Corporan.

The 31-year-old Corporan joins the Rangers after spending the last four seasons with the Astros. He is a career .226 hitter with 17 home runs, 21 doubles and 63 RBI in 199 games. Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said Corporan will be the backup catcher to Robinson Chirinos, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The 19-year-old Bostick was a second-round draft pick in 2013. He is 9-7 with a 4.46 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 35 career appearances (26 starts) in the minors. He played at Class A Hickory in 2014.

Germen was acquired in a trade with the Yankees on Tuesday. It is the third time this offseason he has been designated for assignment.

Abreu, who was released by the Mets earlier this season, hit .238 with a .667 OPS in 122 at-bats before then. Germen has compiled a 5.27 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in his 22 appearances in the majors this season.

Germen was out Monday with a flu-like illness, and it's apparent the team discovered it was more than a day-to-day issue upon examination. He hasn't pitched since May 5, so he'll be eligible to return early next week if healthy. Germen owns a 3.57 ERA and 17:5 K:BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings.
