Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu throws bullpen session Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/26/2015) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu threw a bullpen session Sunday for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury, MLB.com reports.

"He throws where he wants," manager Don Mattingly said. "It's like he hasn't missed a beat. It's a matter of getting him strong. He didn't feel anything, he's had no problem. The process is going good and we'll let it play out."

Ryu hasn't pitched since March 17 due to a shoulder impingement. He'll throw again Tuesday and remains without a timetable to return to the team. As Ryu will essentially have to use his rehab assignment to build up his arm strength, it's possible he won't make his season debut until late May.

(4/25/2015) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in the next couple of days and possibly as early as Sunday, according to the L.A. Times.

Ryu, who is currently on the 15-day DL with a shoulder injury, remains without a timetable for his return to the pitching staff. He has been unable to throw in a game so far this season after posting a 14-7 record in 2014 with a 3.38 ERA and 139 strikeouts.

(4/24/2015) The Dodgers could be in the market for a No. 5 starter, as South Korean hurler Hyun-Jin Ryu remains without a timetable for return in his recovery from a shoulder impingement, reports CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Ryu was limited to two spring starts and has not pitched since March 17 due to the issue. The Dodgers have used swing man David Huff for a spot start on April 14 and Mike Bolsinger on Thursday to fill in that role.

(4/19/2015) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) continued his throwing program Sunday, throwing for a third straight day from about 90 feet, but he remains without a timetable to get back on the mound, TrueBlueLA.com reports.

"I don't know when I'll be able to throw a bullpen. I've just been throwing outside on the field," Ryu said Sunday through an interpreter. "So far it's just making sure I have no pain. At this condition I probably could [throw a bullpen session] but I haven't thrown long toss yet."

Ryu hasn't pitched since March 17 due to a shoulder impingement, but he isn't focusing on a specific timetable at this point.

"I haven't thought about a timetable," Ryu said. "I'm just doing what they tell me."

Ryu did say that he's not feeling any pain in his shoulder while throwing.

Ryu was shut down twice last season with discomfort in his shoulder, and he was prescribed a few weeks of rest after dealing with stiffness and having a subsequent MRI.

The Dodgers added Tuesday the left-hander underwent a contrast MRI, which showed no change from his 2012 MRI. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that Joe Wieland was the leading candidate to replace Ryu in the rotation.
