Hyun-Jin Ryu plays catch Tuesday

(8/19/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu played catch Tuesday, testing out his strained right gluteus, MLB.com reports.

"[Ryu's] doing better, feeling better," manager Don Mattingly said. "He's basically playing catch, keeping his arm moving. He'll be doing more things underneath, working out. He's doing good right now. Timetable-wise, I don't know if we're going to have that. ... Right now, I feel pretty good about that."

Ryu was placed on the disabled list Friday with the injury. He has yet to work on his lower body while sidelined.

(8/15/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu will likely be placed on the disabled list, according to MLB.com.

The club has not made the move just yet, but Ryu is expected to land on the DL. Ryu is dealing with a glute injury. He was already set to miss his next start. Ryu has a 3.28 ERA over 137 1/3 innings.

(8/14/2014) Don Mattingly is pessimistic about the prospect of left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu making his next start, per the Los Angeles Times. Ryu managed to pitch 5 2/3 innings in a loss to Atlanta on Wednesday night before being pulled with a glute injury that will require an MRI.

The loss for any length of time would be a blow to the Dodgers. Ryu racked up five consecutive quality starts before his latest outing, during which he yielded just seven earned runs in 33 innings pitched.

(8/13/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu is expected to undergo an MRI once the team returns to Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Ryu was pulled from Wednesday's game with a glute injury, and his status for Tuesday's start is in question. He'll visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache after the MRI.

(8/13/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was removed from Wednesday's game in the sixth inning due to a right gluteus muscle strain, the team announced.

After throwing ball four to B.J. Upton with two outs in the sixth inning, Ryu turned to the dugout and summoned the trainer. He finished with three earned runs allowed on six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings as well as seven strikeouts. Ryu is day-to-day moving forward.

(8/8/2014) Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu put together another dominant outing Thursday night against the Angels, improving to 13-5 on the year. The left-hander permitted two hits and one walk while striking out four over seven scoreless innings of work.

Over his last five starts covering 33 innings, Ryu has allowed seven earned runs. He owns a 3.21 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 22 starts (131 2/3 innings). His next start will come Tuesday at Atlanta

Dan Haren to start Friday, Hyun-Jin Ryu moved to Saturday

(7/30/2014) Dodgers pitcher Dan Haren is in line to make Friday's start against the Cubs, with Hyun-Jin Ryu being given an extra day of rest, MLB.com reports.

Haren had his regular turn in the rotation skipped, and he hasn't pitched since July 23. He did throw a bullpen session Wednesday, putting him in line for Friday's outing. Haren owns a 4.49 ERA and 92:26 K:BB ratio in 122 1/3 innings.


Slider has become 'go-to pitch' for Hyun-Jin Ryu

(7/28/2014) Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu is using his slider a season-high 20.9 percent of the time in July, according to BrooksBaseball.net. It's now his second-most used pitch behind his fastball.

Although Ryu has a season-worst 4.45 ERA in five July starts, he is 3-1 and is striking out a season-best 10.2 batters per nine innings this month. Ryu has improved his slider with the help from Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, and it's become an integral part of his repertoire.

"Not just this win, but the last three wins, it’s become a very key part of my pitches," Ryu said through a translator, per The Orange County Register. "It’s become now a pitch I can’t win without.

"After studying video and imitating how (Kershaw) throws the ball and the velocity and the arm angle, I was able to sort of make it my own pitch. Ever since then, it’s been a go-to pitch for me."


Hyun-Jin Ryu wins his 12th Sunday

(7/27/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu won his 12th game Sunday against the Giants.

Ryu allowed three runs on six hits over six innings of work. He struck out seven and walked one during the outing. The Giants were able to chip away at Ryu at a few points during the game. He allowed run-scoring singles in both the third and fourth inning, and gave up a solo home run in the fifth. Despite the mid-start struggles, Ryu managed to hang on for the win.

With the win, Ryu moved to 12-5. He'll take on the Cubs in his next start.

(7/21/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu turned in a quality start for the win Monday night against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, improving to 11-5 on the year. The left-hander yielded two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five over seven innings of a 5-2 victory.

Over his last two starts covering 13 innings, Ryu has allowed only two earned runs. He owns a 3.39 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP over 19 starts (111 2/3 innings). His next start will come Sunday at San Francisco.

(7/13/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu put together a quality start along with 10 strikeouts for the win Sunday afternoon at home against the Padres. The left-hander permitted two hits and no walks while striking out 10 over six innings of a 1-0 victory.

Ryu enters the All-Star break with a 10-5 record, along with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP over 18 starts (104 2/3 innings). He will make his next start Monday at Pittsburgh.

(7/8/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu couldn’t make it past the third inning Tuesday against the Tigers.

Things looked promising after the first inning, as Ryu took the mound with a five-run lead. He was able to pitch around a leadoff walk in his first inning of work. The second inning, however, brought some issues for Ryu. He opened the frame allowing five straight hits to the Tigers, which scored two runs. After getting a strikeout, Ryu again allowed two straight hits, which tied the game at 5-5. Ryu came out for the third inning, but was pulled after he allowed the go-ahead run to score. He was charged with another run after leaving the game. 

Ryu tossed just 2 1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs. He allowed 10 hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. The loss drops him to 9-5. His next start is scheduled to come against the Padres.

(7/2/2014) Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu turned in another solid start, but was unable to factor into the decision Wednesday afternoon against the Indians. The left-hander permitted two runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out eight over seven innings of a 5-4 defeat.

Over his last four starts covering 26 innings, Ryu has allowed seven earned runs. He owns a 3.08 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over 16 starts (96 1/3 innings). He will make his next start Tuesday at Detroit. He is 6-1 with a 1.62 ERA in eight starts away from home this season.

(6/28/2014) Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched well but came away on the wrong side against the Cardinals.

Ryu tossed seven solid innings in the loss, allowing three runs while scattering nine hits. He struck out seven batters and walked just one on 101 pitches, but got little help in a 3-1, his fourth of the season.

Ryu had won his previous two outings, and is now 9-4 in 15 starts. He carries a 3.12 ERA into his next outing, set for Wednesday against the Indians.

(6/17/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu bounced back with a sharp outing for the win Monday night at home against the Rockies. The left-hander permitted one run on three hits and one walk while striking out six over six innings of a 6-1 victory.

Over his first three starts back from the disabled list covering 18 innings, Ryu has allowed seven earned runs. He owns a 3.18 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 13 starts (76 1/3 innings). He will make his next start Sunday at San Diego.

(6/11/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was hung with a loss Wednesday, giving up four earned runs on six hits and two walks in six innings while striking out five in his team's 5-0 defeat against the Reds.

Ryu (7-3) had recorded wins in four straight starts going into Wednesday before taking his first loss since April. He surrendered three runs in the third inning, and the Reds tallied another on a sixth-inning home run. Ryu owns a 3.33 ERA and 58:16 K:BB ratio in 70 1/3 innings. His next start is scheduled for Monday against the Rockies.

(6/7/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu twirled his fourth quality start in a row Friday, in a 7-2 win over the Rockies.

Ryu pitched six solid innings yet again, and limited the Rockies to just two runs throughout. He scattered eight hits, including a home run, while walking two batters and striking out two on 100 pitches.

Ryu is now 4-0 since his return from the disabled list, to push his record to 7-2 on the season. He carries a 3.08 ERA into his next outing, set for Wednesday in Cincinnati.

(5/31/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu picked up his third straight win Saturday, giving up two earned runs on 10 hits in six innings while striking out four in his team's 12-2 victory over the Pirates.

Ryu (6-2) enjoyed an abundance of run support en route to his sixth win, with the Pirates managing a single run in the fourth and sixth innings. Ryu owns a 3.09 ERA and 51:12 K:BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings. He's slated to take on the Rockies in Colorado Friday.

(5/26/2014) Just a day after Josh Beckett's no-hitter, Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu flirted with perfection in a dominant outing against the Reds, improving to 5-2 on the year.

Ryu fired seven perfect innings and had his perfect-game and no-hit bid is broken up by Todd Frazier on his second pitch of the eighth inning. Frazier lined a double near the third base line to spark a three-run rally in the eighth. The left-hander permitted three runs on three hits and no walks while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings. Of his 95 pitches, 66 were strikes.

Over his last two starts covering 13 1/3 innings, Ryu has allowed five earned runs. He owns a 3.10 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP through his first nine starts (52 1/3 innings). He will make his next start Saturday at home against Pittsburgh.

(5/21/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu hardly looked like he missed a beat Wednesday against the Mets, in his return from the disabled list.

Ryu pitched six quality innings in the outing, and really only made one mistake in allowing a two-run home run in the sixth inning. He surrendered just two earned runs on nine hits and a walk, and added a season-high nine strikes on just 89 pitches.

Ryu has tossed a six innings or more in five of eight starts this season, and is now 4-2 with a 3.00 ERA. With his shoulder injury behind him, Ryu is set to make his next start Monday against the Reds.

(5/16/2014) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu took a big step in his recovery from a shoulder injury Friday, and could be on the verge of returning from the disabled list.

Ryu tossed 75 pitches in a four-inning simulated game at the team's spring training complex Friday, and reported no setbacks with his shoulder. Manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com Ryu looked "really good" against minor-league hitters, but was not willing to confirm Ryu's return date.

Despite that, Ryu has a clear path to return to the rotation, especially since the team does not consider a minor-league rehab assignment necessary. Ryu could slot into the rotation spot of Paul Maholm, who is set to pitch Wednesday against the Mets. Maholm's ERA ballooned to 5.40 after his last start.

(5/13/2014) Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was able to throw more than 40 pitches off a mound Tuesday, his first significant step in recovering from a shoulder injury.  

Ryu was able to throw all of his pitches without issue during the session, a good sign as he ramps up his activity level. Ryu's next step will be determined based on his he feels Wednesday, though he likely needs some more work before he returns from the disabled list. Manager Don Mattingly told TrueBlueLA.com Ryu could toss a rehab start or even a simulated game next.
