Dodgers' Ryu on shoulder: 'It's very similar pain to last year'

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/25/2015) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu said Wednesday he wasn't surprised that an MRI didn't turn up any new damage in his shoulder earlier this week, MLB.com reports.

"I wasn't too worried," Ryu said. "It's very similar pain to last year."

Ryu was shut down twice last season with discomfort in his shoulder, and he was prescribed a few weeks of rest after dealing with stiffness and having a subsequent MRI.

"Now I'm just focusing on the two weeks and get my condition back and get my arm in shape," Ryu said.

Ryu is likely to open the season on the disabled list as he continues to recover from the shoulder issue.

Dodgers' Ryu has no structural damage in shoulder, prescribed rest

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/24/2015) After meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles for futher evaluation, no structural damage was found in Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu's injured shoulder, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Ryu has been prescribed rest for a few weeks, which means he will likely start the 2015 season on the disabled list.

The Dodgers added Tuesday the left-hander underwent a contrast MRI, which showed no change from his 2012 MRI. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that Joe Wieland was the leading candidate to replace Ryu in the rotation.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/23/2015) Dodgers pitcher Joe Wieland is the leading candidate to replace Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) in the starting rotation while Ryu remains sidelined, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Wieland has allowed one run in nine innings this spring while striking out nine. Other options include Mike Bolsinger and Carlos Frias, and the team could fill the rotation hole externally, as the Dodgers remain open to acquiring starting pitching depth for the back end of the rotation.

(3/22/2015) After struggling through a throwing session Sunday, the Dodgers sent starter Hyun-Jin Ryu back to Los Angeles to visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache for further evaluation, per The Los Angeles Times

Ryu has been dealing with shoulder inflammation since his first start of the spring on March 12, and the team had shut him down until Sunday's throwing session.

Manager Don Mattingly said that Ryu is not expected to be ready for Opening Day.

Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu resumes throwing Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/22/2015) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu will resume throwing Sunday, MLB.com reports.

Ryu had been shut down due to shoulder inflammation, and he dealt with soreness in his shoulder after making his spring debut March 12. Manager Don Mattingly said recently that the pitcher could be held back until the fifth game of the regular season or possibly open the season on the disabled list.

Hyun-Jin Ryu shut down three days with shoulder inflammation

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/20/2015) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu will be shut down for at least three days with inflammation in his left shoulder, per the team's official website. Manager Don Mattingly said Ryu could be skipped until the fifth game of the season, or placed on the 15-day disabled list to start the season, per MLB.com.

Ryu reported shoulder tightness -- similar to what he experienced last season -- after his Cactus League debut Thursday. He tossed two perfect innings and recorded two strikeouts before leaving the game. After consulting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, both sides agreed to have an injection to reduce the inflammation in his shoulder.

"On a scale of 1 to 10, it's a low 4," Ryu said through an interpreter, per the Los Angeles Times. "Not too worried this time. It was just a little thing."

Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu able to throw bullpen session on Tuesday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/24/2015) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was able to toss his bullpen session on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Ryu received an extra day of rest following his first session, and did not throw on Monday. Typically, most pitchers will throw every other day early in camp. The club gave no reason for Ryu taking an extra day.

Ryu didn't seem all that pleased with his session on Tuesday, saying he threw too many fastballs out of the zone. That allowed him to focus more on his changeup, however.

Ryu has already said his goal is to pitch 200 innings in 2015. He dealt with some shoulder fatigue last season, and is hoping to avoid the same fate this time around. Prior to joining the Dodgers for camp, Ryu tossed five bullpen sessions while training with the LG Twins of the Korean league.

The 27-year-old posted a 3.38 ERA over 152 innings last year.
