Tyler Lyons heads to DL after allowing nine runs in loss

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/13/2014) After Cardinals starting pitcher Tyler Lyons suffered his third loss of the season during a 17-5 defeat Monday against the Cubs, the team announced Tuesday he was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a left shoulder strain.

No replacement in the rotation has been announced, but Jaime Garcia could come off the disabled list to take Lyons' rotation spot.

He got through a scoreless third before watching two more runs go up on the board in the fourth. Now the owner of a 6.12 ERA, Lyons could be on his way out of the rotation with Jaime Garcia making a Triple-A rehab start Monday. Tyler Lyons more than an afterthought

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/7/2014) In 20 appearances, including 19 starts, at Triple-A Memphis of the heavy-hitting PCL -- the same level where Shelby Miller produced a 4.74 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 2012 -- Tyler Lyons has compiled a 3.32 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Granted, minor-league production counts for little, but when a pitcher who performed that well in a league that tough gets off to this kind of start, he's somebody to take seriously.

My biggest hesitation with him is that he got off to a terrific start last season as well, allowing two earned runs on only six hits in 14 innings over his first two starts before falling apart from there. He doesn't have much of a pedigree and is lacking knockout stuff, but he wouldn't be the first such pitcher to find success at the highest level. Particularly since he plays for the Cardinals, an organization with a knack for developing talent, you shouldn't rule out the possibility.

Joe Kelly has been slow to recover from a hamstring injury and might be a better fit for the bullpen in the long run anyway. Lyons is still well out of my top 100 at starting pitcher, but he's not any more of a long shot than Tom Koehler or Dallas Keuchel.

Tyler Lyons strikes out seven in quality start Tuesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/6/2014) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons surrendered just one earned run on three hits and one walk in six innings while striking out seven Tuesday, but he didn't factor into the decision in his team's 2-1 loss to the Braves.

Lyons pitched in relief twice before rejoining the rotation Tuesday, and he managed to deliver his best outing of the season but was denied his first win. He owns a 3.43 ERA and 21:6 K:BB ratio in 21 innings. Lyons could make his next start against the Cubs Monday.

Cardinals leaning towards skipping Tyler Lyons

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/29/2014) The Cardinals are leaning towards skipping pitcher Tyler Lyons the next time through the rotation, MLB.com reports.

Lyons would pitch out of the bullpen until the team needs him to start again. He is scheduled to pitch Friday in Chicago if the team chooses not to bypass him in the rotation.

Tyler Lyons won't get skipped

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(4/27/2014) The Cardinals have an off day Thursday but don't plan to skip Tyler Lyons' spot in the rotation, reports MLB.com. He's scheduled to pitch Friday against the Cubs in Chicago.

The lefty is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts after yielding four runs in six innings Saturday to the Pirates.

Tyler Lyons knocked around in loss to Pirates

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/26/2014) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons (0-2) endured a rough outing, suffering his second loss of the season in his team's 6-1 defeat to Pittsburgh. The southpaw pitched three scoreless innings before allowing all four of his runs in the fourth inning. He surrendered four hits and one walk while striking out four over six innings pitched.

Lyons has allowed six earned runs over his first two starts (12 innings). He is expected to make his next start Friday against the Cubs in Chicago.

Tyler Lyons posts quality start vs. Mets Monday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/21/2014) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons did a solid job in his first start in replacement of Joe Kelly Monday, giving up two earned runs on on six hits and four walks in six innings while striking out seven in his team's 2-0 loss to the Mets.

Lyons (0-1) posted a 3.32 ERA and 18:5 K:BB ratio in 19 innings over three starts with Triple-A Memphis before being brought up to fill a hole in the rotation, and while he struggled with his control, he was able to lock down a quality start in his regular-season debut depite being saddled with the loss. He'll take on the Pirates at home Saturday.

Tyler Lyons tabbed to replace Joe Kelly in Cards' rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/20/2014) The Cardinals announced pitcher Tyler Lyons will start Monday against the Mets, replacing Joe Kelly (hamstring) in the rotation, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Lyons is 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in three starts this season for Triple-A Memphis.

Carlos Martinez not considered an option for spot starts

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4/17/2014) The Cardinals are not considered moving pitcher Carlos Martinez from the bullpen to the rotation, despite losing Joe Kelly to a hamstring injury that landed him on the disabled list Thursday, according to MLB.com.

"You'd be looking at stretching him out just to slow him back down again," Matheny said. "This is one of those scenarios where we just don't know how long it's going to be [for Kelly]. It's not set in stone, and I think you take that risk of pulling [Martinez] out, getting him going just to slow him back down if things [with Kelly] progress quickly."

According to the report, the team prefers to pick a starter from the Triple-A squad in Memphis, rather than move Carlos Martinez into a starting role for a few spot starts. Tyler Lyons and Tim Cooney are both mentioned as possible options for the spot.

Martinez has a 1.86 ERA in 9 2/3 innings of the bullpen, and has yet to throw more than 31 pitches in any outing.

Tyler Lyons likely candidate to start Monday?

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/17/2014) In an MLB Network interview on Thursday, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny indicated that he'll likely start a pitcher from Triple-A Memphis on Monday in place of Joe Kelly, who's nursing a hamstring injury, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Tyler Lyons will be the likely candidate to make that start on Monday. Lyons is 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA and 18:5 K:BB ratio over his first three minor-league starts (19 innings).

Tyler Lyons optioned to Triple-A

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/19/2014) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons was optioned to Triple-A Wednesday.

Lyons was auditioning for a bullpen role this spring but surrendered 13 earned runs in eight innings. He'll get stretched out in Triple-A and provide the Cardinals with another option if something should happen to one of the team's starting pitchers.
