Cardinals SP Tyler Lyons walks five batters in loss to Cubs

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/7/2015) Cardinals starting pitcher Tyler Lyons struggled with his control during a 7-4 loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cubs. The left-hander, who was promoted from Triple-A Memphis, allowed three runs on seven hits and five walks, while striking out three in 5 2/3 innings.

Lyons (2-1) was locked in a scoreless duel with Jake Arrieta before the Cubs broke through with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Both runs scored on Chris Denorfia's two-out single.

Lyons threw two more scoreless innings before running into more trouble in the sixth inning. He was pulled from the game with two outs and two runners on base. Marcus Hatley entered the game and walked the first two batters he faced, allowing one of the inherited runners to score.

Lyons has a 5.02 ERA through six starts this season. He is likely headed back to the minors following Tuesday's spot start.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/6/2015) Cardinals starting pitcher Tyler Lyons will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis to start the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cubs. Tim Cooney, who was recalled Sunday, will start the second game of the doubleheader.

Lyons is 2-0 with a 5.09 ERA in five starts with the Cardinals in 2015. Cooney has no record and a 5.40 ERA through two starts.

Cardinals activate Lance Lynn from DL; option Tyler Lyons to Triple-A

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(6/25/2015) As expected, the Cardinals activated pitcher Lance Lynn from the disabled list Thursday, the team announced. Lynn will start Thursday's game at Miami.

Lynn was on the disabled list after suffering a right forearm strain earlier in June. Lynn is 4-4 with a 3.02 ERA. He last pitched June 7.

To make room for Lynn, the team optioned Tyler Lyons to its Triple-A affiliate. Lyons was 2-0 with a 5.09 ERA in five starts this season.

Cardinals SP Tyler Lyons gets second win of 2015 on Friday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(6/19/2015) Cardinals starter Tyler Lyons was the beneficiary of an offensive outburst on Friday, as St. Louis defeated the Phillies 12-4. Lyons went five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five on the evening.

All three runs Lyons surrendered came on a three-run home run from Ryan Howard in the fifth inning. But the Cardinals were already up 9-0 at that point, so it was of little significance.

Lyons (2-0) has yet to pitch past the fifth inning in any of his five starts this year. But he also hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any start either. He'll take his 5.09 ERA into his next start, scheduled for Thursday in Miami.

Emergency starter Tyler Lyons picks up victory for Cardinals

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(6/13/2015) Fill-in starter Tyler Lyons, moving into the Cardinals' rotation due to the injury to Lance Lynn, was solid Saturday, picking up his first victory of the season in a 3-2 win over the Royals.

The Cardinals didn't ask Lyons to do too much, and the pitcher went just five innings before giving way to a phalanx of relievers. But Lyons gave up just three hits and two runs to earn his first win in four starts this year.

"Tyler was good," manager Mike Matheny said, per MLB.com. "We've seen him come out and be very good in some of his starts, and usually it was just an inning that kind of blew up on him. He had a couple of opportunities for it to happen [Saturday]."

Lyons allowed a pair of solo homers, but struck out six batters during his 79 pitches.

Cardinals recall Sam Tuivailala, option Tyler Lyons

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/17/2015) The Cardinals recalled pitcher Sam Tuivailala from Triple-A Memphis and optioned pitcher Tyler Lyons to the same club, the team announced.

The move is a reversal of a move made earlier in May to insert Lyons into the major-league rotation, where he posted a 5.54 ERA and 17:5 K:BB ratio in 13 innings across three starts. Tuivailala owns a 2.13 ERA and 13:2 K:BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings with Memphis and has made one appearance with the Cardinals.

Cardinals starter Tyler Lyons can't get past the fourth on Saturday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/16/2015) Cardinals starter Tyler Lyons still wasn't able to give his team a quality start on Saturday against the Tigers. The young left-hander allowed three runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in the 10-inning loss to Detroit. He struck out five and walked two on the afternoon.

Lyons put his team in a hole right out of the gate as he allowed a solo home run to Miguel Cabrera in the top of the first. Ian Kinsler and Yoenis Cespedes touched him for a couple of additional runs in the third. Lyons was able to get the first two outs of the fourth, but after a single from Kinsler, manager Mike Matheny had seen enough.

Lyons threw 80 pitches, 55 for strikes. He has yet to pitch more than five innings this season, and will carry a hefty 5.54 ERA into his next start which is scheduled for Thursday in New York against the Mets.

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/11/2015) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons is expected to remain in the starting rotation for now, general manager John Mozeliak said per Fox Sports Midwest.

Lyons made his second start of the year on Sunday, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits in five-plus innings of work. Lyons has a 4.82 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings of work this season.

Cardinals' Tyler Lyons strikes out five in no-decision Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/10/2015) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons didn't factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk in five-plus innings while striking out five in his team's 4-3 loss to the Pirates.

Lyons served up a solo homer in the first inning to fall behind early and gave up another run in the fourth, but his offense was able to pull even at 2-2 with a homer in the top of the sixth inning. Lyons then surrendered a double to the first batter of the bottom of the six before being pulled, and the runner would come around to score. However, his offense was again able to even the game in the next inning.

Lyons owns a 4.82 ERA and 12:3 K:BB ratio in 9 1/3 innings through two starts. He's on track to face the Tigers at home Saturday.

Cardinals recall Tyler Lyons, option Sam Tuivailala

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2015) The Cardinals recalled pitcher Tyler Lyons from Triple-A Memphis Tuesday and optioned pitcher Sam Tuivailala to the same team.

"Every time you come up here, you hope to learn something and get comfortable," Lyons said Monday, per MLB.com. "Being my third season up here, hopefully I've picked up enough along the way and kind of know what to expect. Hopefully it will translate into the game."

Lyons will make his season debut Tuesday against the Cubs after Tim Cooney struggled in the team's first attempt to replace the injured Adam Wainwright in the rotation.

"For me, it's about establishing my fastball, getting ahead and being able to control counts and being able to get to my secondary stuff," Lyons said. "When I've been successful at whatever level, it's usually because of that. And whenever I've failed at whatever level, it's because of that. I have figured out what I have to do to be successful. Now I just have to go out and do it."

Tuivailala was recalled Sunday and gave up one earned run in two innings while striking out two in his only appearance.

P Tyler Lyons looking to keep Cardinals' win streak alive Tuesday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/5/2015) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons has been tabbed to make the start Tuesday agains the Cubs. Lyons is taking the place of one Adam Wainwright, who is likely out for the season after suffering a torn Achilles.

Lyons, 27, will be making his first appearance of 2015. He has spent beginning of the season pitching in Triple-A, where has a 2.91 ERA over four starts for the Memphis Redbirds. The left-hander does have big-league action under his belt, however. He has appeared in 23 Major League games between 2013-2014, including a dozen starts.

But, he's never pitched more than six innings in any start with the Cardinals, and has not earned a victory since 2013, going 0-4 last year. But Lyons is confident that he is ready to be a key contributor for the Cardinals this season.

"Being my third season up here, hopefully I've picked up enough along the way and kind of know what to expect", Lyons said, per FoxSports.com.

Lyons owns a lofty 7.84 lifetime ERA in four appearances against the Cubs.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/3/2015) Cardinals pitcher Tyler Lyons will draw the start for Tuesday's matchup with the Cubs, the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Lyons has made 12 starts for the Cardinals over the previous two seasons, going 2-7 with a 5.89 ERA and 53:21 K:BB ratio in 65 2/3 innings. He's been far more effective as a reliever, as he has posted a 1.13 ERA and 26:6 K:BB ratio in 24 innings out of the bullpen.

Lyons has made four starts with Triple-A Memphis this season, going 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA and 26:6 K:BB ratio in 21 2/3 innings.

Cardinals will look internally to replace P Adam Wainwright

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(4/27/2015) With starter Adam Wainwright likely done for the season with an Achilles injury, the Cardinals will initially look at internal candidates to replace the pitcher, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said that to fill Wainwright's spot in the rotation Thursday, the team will look to either lefties Tyler Lyons and Tim Cooney or righthander Zach Petrick

That would seem to eliminate the Cardinals making a move for a veteran pitcher like the Phillies' Cole Hamels, at least for now.

"If you get into May and early June and you don't feel like the internal options are the solution you were hoping for, then you might have to look outside," Mozeliak said.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/31/2014) Cardinals manager Mike Matheny didn't commit to Justin Masterson making his next start Thursday against the Brewers. In fact, he hinted Marco Gonzales and Tyler Lyons could be the leading candidates to start Thursday, per MLB.com.

"(Marco is) a possibility. Tyler (is) a possibility. Justin's a possibility. We'll see," Matheny said. "We've talked a lot about this stuff. It just hasn't been talked about with everybody else, and this isn't the time or place to start making those statements. We just want to put the guy out there that's going to give us the best chance to win. It's going to be how it matches up with other teams and how they look. We'll be willing to make that statement soon, just not right now."
