Michael Kickham could head to bullpen

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/29/2013) Giants pitcher Michael Kickham has been starting with Chad Gaudin on the disabled list recently, but manager Bruce Bochy thinks he could slide into the bullpen as a long reliever when Gaudin is ready to return.

"He’s got the equipment to do that," Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle Saturday. "That used to be the way you broke starters into the majors, in long relief. With him, we're just going to go one start at a time and see how he handles it. If we have to make an adjustment, we will."

Kickham pitched well for the first five innings of his start, allowing just two runs, but he came apart in the sixth. Kickham allowed four straight hits with one out, before being pulled from the start. Two runs scored prior to his exit from the game and two more inherited runners scored on the bullpen.

Kickham was charged for five earned runs on eight hits, while striking out five batters in 5 1/3 innings. A late rally was not enough to get him off the hook for the 6-5 loss.

Kickham is now 0-2 with a 10.57 ERA in his first two starts. It is not clear how long he is expected to stay with the Giants, but his next turn in the rotation is scheduled for Monday against the Reds.
