Indians' Giovanny Urshela out for second game of doubleheader

(6/28/2015) Indians third baseman Giovanny Urshela is not in the lineup for the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Urshela went 1 for 3 in the first game earlier in the day, which extended his current hit streak to six games.

Over the last six games, he's hitting .286 with six hits in 21 at-bats.

Urshela has performed decently since his promotion. He has hit safely in seven of his nine starts and owns a .242/.306/.343 slash line. He has also provided a distinct defensive upgrade.

(6/11/2015) Indians rookie third baseman Giovanny Urshela crushed his first career home run during a 6-0 win Thursday against the Mariners. Urshela hit a two-out solo home run off Vidal Nuno in the fifth inning.

Urshela also had an RBI single in the third inning, as he finished 2 for 4 with one strikeout and two runs.

''It's very exciting, both hits,'' Urshela said, per the Associated Press. ''I was just trying to get one in one day, and I got two.''

Urshela came into Thursday's game 0 for 4 with one RBI in his first two appearances.

''You could see how happy he was,'' Indians manager Terry Francona said. ''It was genuine, pure. You don't get to see that all the time. It's once in a lifetime when you get your first major league hit, first major league home run.''

(6/9/2015) Indians rookie third baseman Giovanny Urshela is set to make his major league debut Tuesday night against visiting Seattle after his promotion from Triple-A. He is batting eighth.

He will remain the starter at third for the time being, per the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

Urshela, who was batting .276 with three home runs and nine RBI in 76 at-bats at Columbus, is replacing disappointing Lonnie Chisenhall, who was sent down. Urshela is also considered a far superior defensive player.

(6/8/2015) The Indians are shuffling their infield very dramatically right now.

In one day, the team optioned shortstop Jose Ramirez and third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall to Triple-A Columbus, while recalling Zach Walters and Giovanny Urshela to take their respective spots.

Urshela was hitting .276 with three home runs and nine RBI in 76 at-bats for Triple-A Columbus this season.

The team optioned Shawn Armstrong, Charles Brewer, Giovanny Urshela to Triple-A. Cody Anderson, Ryan Merritt and Tony Wolters were all optioned to Double-A, and Jake Lowery, Tyler Naquin, Will Roberts and Jordan Smith were all reassigned to minor-league camp.

(3/12/2015) Indians third baseman Giovanny Urshela was scratched from Thursday's spring game against the Royals because of a tight lower back, per The Plain Dealer. Mike Aviles took Urshela's spot in the lineup.

Urshela is batting .200 (2 for 10) with one home run, two RBI, one run and one walk in five spring games.


Indians' Francona keeping a close eye on Giovanny Urshela

(2/27/2015) Indians manager Terry Francona has been keeping a close eye on third-base prospect Giovanny Urshela, who was only recently cleared for a full range of activities after tweaking his knee during winter ball, MLB.com reports.

"He has a tremendous reputation of being a really good defender," Francona said. "I think I've been more wanting to watch his gait, just to make sure he's not favoring that leg. He promised us that, if he was, he'd let us know, but I also know he's a young kid in his first major-league camp."

Urshela suffered the injury on Nov. 15 and has rehabbed the injured knee at the team's spring-training facility in Goodyear, Ariz.

"He's worked really hard to get himself to where he can go through a normal spring," said Indians' director of player development Carter Hawkins. "We're very excited about the spot he's in right now, given the possible outcomes of the injury."

Urshela saw his first action at the Triple-A level in 2014, hitting .276/.331/.473 with 13 home runs and 65 RBI in 395 at-bats with Columbus.

(1/28/2015) Indians third base prospect Giovanny Urshela, who sprained a knee ligament in a Venezuelan winter league game in November, should be ready for spring training, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Urshela, 23, is considered the most skilled defensive third baseman in the organization.

He likely will begin the season at Triple-A Columbus, but "could get a look" if Lonnie Chisenhall falters, the paper said.
