Cubs option Arismendy Alcantara, transfer Mike Olt to 60-day DL

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/21/2015) The Cubs optioned infielder Arismendy Alcantara to Triple-A Iowa Tuesday while also transferring third baseman Mike Olt to the 60-day disabled list.

Both moves clear 25-man and 40-man roster spots for top prospect Addison Russell, who is set to start at second base and bat ninth in his major-league debut Tuesday.

Alcantara was just 2 for 26 with five walks and one stolen base in 11 games with the Cubs. Olt is recovering from a hairline fracture in his wrist.

Cubs promote infielder Addison Russell

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4/21/2015) The Cubs are calling up shortstop Addison Russell , sources told CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Russell was recently moved to second base at Triple-A to help provide the Cubs with more infield depth at second. He is batting .314 with one home run and seven RBI at Triple-A.

The team is expected to demote Arismendy Alcantara, who is batting .077, reports MLB.com.

Cubs' Arismendy Alcantara struggling to make contact

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/20/2015) Cubs infielder Arismendy Alcantara is just 2 for 26 with 11 strikeouts in the first two weeks of the season.

Alcantara saw significant action at second base and third base over the first 10 days of the season with the team dealing with multiple injuries in the infield, but he came off the bench in each of the team's three games against the Padres this weekend, with Jonathan Herrera drawing the start in each game and Kris Bryant joining the lineup Friday.

Alcantara could still work his way into playing time at second base but will need to start finding a way to make more contact after striking out three times in four at-bats against the Padres.

Cubs' Arismendy Alcantara still looking for first hit

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/13/2015) Cubs infielder Arismendy Alcantara is still looking for his first hit after opening the season 0 for 12 in his first five games.

Alcantara wasn't in the starting lineup on Opening Night, but he's made four starts at second base since while also making one appearance at third base. Despite his lack of hits, the infielder has drawn five walks, scored four runs and stolen one base.

Cubs' Arismendy Alcantara will play all over the place

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/26/2015) Cubs utility man Arismendy Alcantara is going to play a lot of positions this season, according to ESPN.

Alcantara saw time in center last season, but the team's trade for Dexter Fowler will alter his role. Alcantara says he's ready for the challenge. "Mentally you have to be ready for that," Alcantara said. "They want me to play second base and the outfield." He's also expected to see some time at third base.

Manager Joe Maddon is glad to have such a versatile player on the team. "When you get a guy like that and you want to give someone a rest, you don't feel like you're losing anything," Joe Maddon said. "And the big attraction there is also in-game. It's like having an extra guy on the bench."

The 23-year-old Alcantara hit .205/.254/.367 over 278 at-bats last year.

Maddon: Third base 'wide open' for Cubs

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(2/20/2015) New Cubs manager Joe Maddon met with the media at spring training on Friday and admitted he had no idea who would be playing third base for the team.

Maddon declared the battle for the hot corner wide open

The competition seems to boil down the three options. Mike Olt played 52 games at third for the Cubs last season. He hit .160 with 12 home runs and 33 RBI. He enters spring training as the likely favorite.

Kris Bryant is the team's third baseman of the future. The second overall pick in the 2013 draft, shot through the farm system in a year and a half. He played 70 games at Triple-A Iowa last season, hitting .295 with 21 home runs and 52 RBI. He hasn't yet made his Major League debut.

Arismendy Alcantara is also an option. The versatile rookie played 48 games in center and 25 at second base last season and has been praised as being capable of playing anywhere on the field. He hit .205 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI.

Trade of Valbuena doesn't mean Cubs are rushing Bryant to the majors

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/19/2015) Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Monday the trade of third baseman Luis Valbuena to Houston and third-base prospect Kris Bryant's roster situation are "totally independent" of each other.

Hoyer added Mike Olt, Tommy La Stella and Arismendy Alcantara could play at third base until Chicago feels Bryant is ready for the majors.

"We are not going to speed up that clock," Hoyer said, per ESPN.

Bryant, who was selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2013 MLB draft, has developed into one of the top prospects in baseball. He hit .325 with 43 home runs and 110 RBI in 138 games in the minors in 2014.

The Cubs were down 7-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Alcantara followed up an RBI single earlier in the inning with his three-run blast to bring the Cubs to within one before they took the lead in the eighth. Alcantara has hit .214/.267/.377 with 10 home runs, 26 RBI and eight stolen bases in 252 at-bats.

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/18/2014) Cubs rookie outfielder Arismendy Alcantara has been ruled out again Thursday against the Dodgers. A wrist issue has caused him to miss the last two games.

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/17/2014) A wrist ailment has Cubs outfelder Arismendy Alcantara out again Wednesday against visiting Cincinnati.

Alcantara, who missed the Tuesday game as well, has just eight hits in his last 45 at-bats, but is 5 for 16 in his last four games.

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/16/2014) Cubs outfielder Arismendy Alcantara is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Reds due to a sore right wrist, MLB.com reports.

Alcantary suffered the injury when he collided with the outfielder wall Monday, and is considered day to day at this point.

Hitters to sit in Week 23

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/31/2014) If you own Stephen Vogt, Mark Trumbo, Arismendy Alcantara, Nick Castellanos, Elvis Andrus or Khris Davis in Fantasy, you may want to think twice about starting him in Fantasy Week 23 (Sept. 1-7).

Find out why in the latest Start and Sit Hitters.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/25/2014) Cubs outfielder Arismendy Alcantara lifted off Sunday afternoon against the Orioles.

Alcantara launched a solo home run in the fifth inning off Miguel Gonzalez. He added a single in the seventh inning. He finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI in a 2-1 victory. He owns a .228/.286/.359 slash line with four homers and 14 RBI over 167 at-bats.

Arismendy Alcantara slugs third home run Wednesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8/6/2014) Cubs outfielder Arismendy Alcantara went 1 for 4 with a two-run home run in his team's 13-4 loss to the Rockies Wednesday.

Alcantara gave his team a 3-0 lead with his fourth-inning home run, but it went all downhill from there for the Cubs. It was his first home run since July 22. Alcantara has hit .240/.313/.410 with three home runs, 10 RBI and four stolen bases in 100 at-bats.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Arismendy Alcantara making move up rankings

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/14/2014) Cubs rookie Arismendy Alcantara already extended his stay in the big leagues with his performance filling in for Darwin Barney, who was on paternity leave, and now with him continuing to pile up hits as an everyday player, he's making a move up my rankings.

Granted, it's only five games, and anybody can do anything in a span of five games (that's really not an exaggeration). Alcantara has already struck out five times in those five games, and as I wrote in my latest post to the Fantasy Baseball Today blog, his poor plate discipline will rear its ugly head eventually. Still, his combination of power and speed could make him a significant contributor at the thin shortstop position.

Even with all the unknowns, I'm willing to rank him as high as 17th at the position, ahead of Eugenio Suarez, Jean Segura and Asdrubal Cabrera, among others, and the names just ahead of him aren't so high-end that he couldn't push his way into the top 12 in the weeks ahead. If nothing else, you should add him in leagues that require the use of a middle infielder.

Arismendy Alcantara likely to play center Saturday

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(7/11/2014) Cubs manager Rick Renteria said infielder Arismendy Alcantara likely will start in center field Saturday against the Braves, reports WGN. Alcantara was scheduled to play second base and bat leadoff Friday.

Alcantara, who had four hits Thursday, can play second, shortstop or center.

Arismendy Alcantara picks up four hits Thursday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/10/2014) Cubs infielder Arismendy Alcantara picked up four hits Thursday against the Reds.

After striking out in his first at-bat, and hitting a sac fly his second time up, Alcantara quickly turned things around. He doubled in his third plate appearance, singled his fourth time up and clubbed a triple his fifth time at the plate. He would go on to add another single his final time up. Alcantara finished 4 for 5, with two runs scored and three RBI. The strong performance likely played a role in the Cubs keeping Alcantara on the active roster following the game.

Arismendy Alcantara earns his place in Fantasy

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/10/2014) Well, that didn't take long.

For prospects like Arismendy Alcantara -- and along the same lines, Mookie Betts -- the potential is evident, but without a clear path to everyday at-bats, it's not so evident that you have to rush out and pick them up right away, at least not in standard mixed leagues. You know, they aren't Gregory Polanco or Oscar Taveras, prospects who've become household names (at least in baseball-loving households) well before they arrive, but they're good. They're worth monitoring.

For those prospects, I'll usually say something like, "I'll wait for the first multi-hit game to make a move." Well, it's already come. And by multi-hit game, we're not talking two singles, but a four-hit, three-RBI performance that included both a double and a triple.

As I outlined in particularly dramatic fashion in the latest Prospects Report, the upside for Alcantara is something like what Jimmy Rollins used to be. He may not be the greatest source of batting average because of shaky plate discipline, but he offers a rare combination of power and speed for a shortstop-eligible player. Like Rollins, the speed may be a little more developed to start out his career, but considering he had a .537 slugging percentage at the time of his promotion, you wouldn't want to sell the power short.

And now, he's attracting plenty of attention on the waiver wire. Particularly in Rotisserie leagues, where you have to go deeper into the middle infielder pool, it's time to pick him up.

Arismendy Alcantara looking at more playing time

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/10/2014) Cubs infielder Arismendy Alcantara will remain in the majors for the time being.

The team optioned pitcher Kyle Hendricks to the minors following Thursday's start, meaning Alcantara will get a longer run in the majors. He was expected to receive just two days in the majors while Darwin Barney was on paternity leave. Alcantara went 4 for 5 Thursday, helping his cause.

Arismendy Alcantara worth grabbing for the long haul

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(7/9/2014) The news of the Cubs' imminent promotion of Arismendy Alcantara was likely met by cheers in the Fantasy community, while the revelation that he may only be up as long as Darwin Barney is on paternity leave likely produced groans.

Even if Alcantara is sent back to Triple-A Iowa within a couple of days, he is worth claiming off waivers right now. Though he has played mostly as a shortstop (and is shortstop-eligible in CBSSports.com leagues), Alcantara has been playing more frequently at second base and center field this season. Those are two positions where the Cubs could use an upgrade, and given how Alcantara has been producing, he could be playing at either position on a regular basis shortly.

Whether he replaces Barney or Justin Ruggiano (or whoever is the Cubs' center fielder du jour is when Alcantara is up for good), he should provide instant improvement at the plate. If he were to spend all season at Iowa, he would likely complete his second straight 15-30 season. With a mediocre strikeout rate, Alcantara may not hit much above .260, but his minor league stats hint at his ability to produce power and steals.

With those assets to go along with shortstop eligibility, Alcantara is worth a pickup in standard mixed Rotisserie leagues and deeper mixed Head-to-Head leagues. It's best to take care of that now, while he is still available in more than three-fourths of our leagues.

Arismendy Alcantara starts at second base in debut

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/9/2014) The Cubs officially promoted infielder Arsimendy Alcantara from Triple-A Iowa Wednesday. He was immediately placed into the starting lineup, playing at second base and batting second against right-hander Alfredo Simon.

Arismendy Alcantara to get the call

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/9/2014) Cubs infielder Arismendy Alcantara is expected to be promoted Wednesday, according to ESPN.

Alcantara will take the roster spot of Darwin Barney, who is going on paternity leave. Barney is expected to miss just two games, so Alcantara's debut will be short. He's hitting .308/.354/.538 over 331 at-bats in the minors.
