Tommy Medica the next Allen Craig?

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/29/2014) On Thursday morning's podcast, I compared Padres first baseman/outfielder Tommy Medica to former Padres first baseman/outfielder Kyle Blanks. I figured he was a streaky hitter that has decent pop but strikes out a lot. After further evaluation, I think my analysis of Medica might be a little off.

He's battled a lot of durability issues throughout his career, which is why you probably haven't heard a lot about the 26-year-old slugger. But his minor-league numbers are pretty good. He has a .289 average, .382 on-base percentage, .529 slugging percentage and .911 OPS.

Maybe the comparison I needed to be making was to Cardinals outfielder Allen Craig, who flew under the radar as a prospect despite putting up strong numbers in the minors. Craig hit .308 with a .369 on-base percentage, .518 slugging percentage and .888 OPS in the minors. It's pretty close to what Medica has done.

Medica is heating up for the Padres and could get the opportunity to steal playing time from Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso. Medica could also get time in the outfield. I think I was quick to judge this morning about Medica without doing a little more research. His strikeout rate is still a bit concerning and by no means am I saying he's a must-own player like Craig, but Medica might be worth the flier in deeper formats.

He has been on a tear since returning to the team, and he has three hits and a home run in two straight games. Medica has hit .302/.333/.628 with three home runs and seven RBI in 43 at-bats.
