(3/27/2014) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton is heading to Triple-A, the team announced

Cumpton has been solid this spring, posting a 2.21 ERA in 20 1/3 innings. He tossed five scoreless innings Wednesday. The club will likely utilize Cumpton when there's a need for an emergency starter. Cumpton posted a 2.05 ERA in 30 2/3 innings in the majors last year.

(3/26/2014) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton allowed just two hits and one walk in five scoreless innings while striking out four in his team's 2-1 win over the Twins Wednesday.

Cumpton has done everything necessary to win the fifth spot in the rotation this spring, posting a 2.21 ERA and 12:6 K:BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings. However, he is expected to open the season in Triple-A. Cumpton will likely be one of the first pitchers the Pirates turn to when a rotation hole needs to be filled.

(3/14/2014) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton allowed two unearned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two in four innings in his team's 6-5 win over the Phillies Friday.

Cumpton is leading the race for the final spot in the Pirates rotation after the strong outing, MLB.com reports.

"An improved day for him all around," manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com Friday. "He had his command in play. The fastballs were good, he worked both sides of the plate, pitched inside. The changeup velocity was good, and the slider improved as the outing went on."

Only four of the nine runs Cumpton has allowed this spring have been earned, and he owns a 3.38 ERA and 6:2 K:BB ratio through 10 2/3 innings.

(10/5/2013) In an effort to keep him sharp during the team's postseason run, Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton tossed a simulated game Saturday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Cumpton made six appearances, including five starts this season, and went 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP over 30 2/3 innings.

(9/29/2013) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton pitched five scoreless innings while giving up just two hits and one walk in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Reds.

Crumpton, who struck out three in the finale, ends the season with 15 scoreless innings over his last three appearances for the Pirates. The win gives him a 2-1 record to go with a 2.05 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 22:5 K:BB ratio in 30 2/3 innings over six games (five starts).


Charlie Morton plans to start Friday

(9/10/2013) Pirates starting pitcher Charlie Morton told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette he still plans to start Friday against the Cubs. Morton was forced to leave his previous start with a foot injury. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen Wednesday. If he can't make the start, the Pirates will likely use Brandon Cumpton as a backup option.

(7/31/2013) Brandon Cumpton (1-1) tossed seven scoreless innings in a spot start for his first victory as the Pirates beat the Cardinals to take the second game of a Tuesday's doubleheader.

Cumpton gave up three hits and one walk while striking out five in a 6-0 win. The right-hander owns a 2.78 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in four starts this season for the Pirates.

(7/29/2013) Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has decided who will start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, however, he didn't reveal the decision prior to Monday's game. The choices are Stolmy Pimentel and Brandon Cumpton.

Cumpton has pitched for Pittsburgh this season, going 0-1 with a 4.02 ERA in three starts. Pimentel has yet to make his MLB debut, but is 6-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 21 starts between Double-A and Triple-A.

(7/2/2013) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton pitched well but suffered his first loss of the season in a spot start Tuesday night against the Phillies.

Cumpton (0-1) pitched five scoreless innings before allowing a run-scoring single to Ryan Howard, a sacrifice fly to Domonic Brown and a run-scoring double to Delmon Young in the sixth inning. The right-hander permitted three runs on six hits and one walks while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings in a 3-1 loss.

Cumpton has a 4.02 ERA through three starts and is expected to be sent to the minors.

Cumpton, who was sent down to make room for catcher Tony Sanchez, allowed four runs over 10 innings pitched in the majors. He owned a 3.31 ERA through 11 appearances (10 starts) at Triple-A.

(6/20/2013) Before Thursday's game against the Reds, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said he wasn't sure if Brandon Cumpton was making his last start for the foreseeable future.

"We'll watch." Hurdle said to MLB.com. "Those are great questions I don't need to give you answers to right now because I want to see [Cumpton] pitch."

Hurdle watched Thursday as Cumpton allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk in five innings. The right-hander allowed a solo home run to Jay Bruce and struck out three. He threw 53 of 90 pitches for strikes. Cumpton was in line for the loss until Pittsburgh tied the game at 2 in the sixth inning.

Cumpton, who has a 3.60 ERA, is winless in two starts for Pittsburgh.

Cumpton allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five in five innings of a no-decision.

He could be a strong candidate to make his second start Thursday against the Reds. The Pirates have not announced their rotation plans for Cumpton.

The 24-year-old has gone 4-4 with a 3.31 ERA over 11 appearances and 10 starts with Indianapolis. Pittsburgh designated pitcher Mike Zagurski for assignment to make room.
