by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/12/2014) The Pirates recalled pitcher Brandon Cumpton from Triple-A Indianapolis Tuesday, the team announced.

Brandon Cumpton down, Jeff Dacker up for Pirates

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(7/10/2014) The Pirates sent pitcher Brandon Cumpton down to Triple-A Indianapolis Thursday, to make room on the active roster for the recall of outfielder Jaff Decker.

Brandon Cumpton gets knocked around Wednesday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/9/2014) Pirates starter Brandon Cumpton lasted less than four innings Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Cumpton was very hittable, allowing four runs on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two during the outing. Things could have been worse, as Cumpton loaded the bases in the fourth inning. After getting one out, he was removed with the bases juiced. Ernesto Frieri managed to work out of the jam without surrendering any additional runs, most of which would have been charged to Cumpton.

The loss dropped Cumpton to 3-3 on the year. It's unclear when Cumpton will make his next start due to the approaching All-Star break.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/8/2014) The Pirates will recall pitcher Brandon Cumpton from Triple-A Indianapolis to make the start Wednesday against the Cardinals, MLB.com report Monday. Cumpton is 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA in seven starts in the minors this season.

Brandon Cumpton sent down after fine run with Pirates

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/28/2014) The Pirates have demoted starter Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room on their roster for Gerrit Cole, whom they activated off the disabled list.

Cumpton performed well as his replacement, especially in his last five starts, when he went 3-0 and gave up just 10 earned runs in 30 1/3 innings with just eight walks and 20 strikeouts.

Brandon Cumpton pitches well, settles for no-decision

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/28/2014) Pirates pitcher Brandom Cumpton tossed his third quality start in a row Friday agains the Mets, but came away from the 3-2 extra-innings win with nothing to show for it.

Cumpton extended his unbeaten streak to five starts in the game, but did so with a no-decision. Cumpton allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings of work, while striking out four batters and walking one on 92 pitches.

Cumpton remains 3-2, while his ERA fell to 4.61 with the solid outing. He has a 2.97 ERA over his last five starts heading into his start next Saturday against the Phillies.

Pirates rotation situation about to become clearer

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(6/25/2014) Even with Gerrit Cole (shoulder) and Francisco Liriano (side) lost to injury and Wandy Rodriguez having been let go, the Pirates have been surging in recent weeks, and their replacements have been a large part of their recent success. They have received surprisingly good performances from Jeff Locke, Brandon Cumpton and Vance Worley.

Now that Cole is set to return on Saturday against the Mets, one of the trio is likely to lose his rotation spot. Manager Clint Hurdle has yet to disclose his plans, though he confirmed that Worley and Cumpton were still the probable starters for the first two games of that series. That has the look of a one-game audition for each pitcher, and that would make sense, as Locke has made the strongest case for keeping his current role.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has speculated that Cumpton is the most likely candidate for demotion, so while Worley could conceivably lose the job with a poor performance Thursday, owners in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats should consider picking him up now. If he pitches well in his upcoming start and Cumpton is sent down, Worley could be tougher to claim in just a couple of days.

As he has been pitching with improved control and possibly a rediscovered knack for getting called strikes, Worley could be a worthy addition in deeper leagues, even if he's been making Bartolo Colon look like a swing-and-miss pitcher. After making four good starts in a row, Locke should be getting some consideration in standard mixed leagues, at least for two-start weeks.

Brandon Cumpton delivers quality start vs. Reds Tuesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/17/2014) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton didn't factor into the decision Tuesday after giving up three earned runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings and striking out four in his team's 6-5 loss to the Reds.

Cumpton was able to deliver his third quality start of the season and his first in his last four outings, but it wasn't enough to earn his third straight win. He owns a 5.82 ERA and 24:9 K:BB ratio in 38 2/3 innings. Cumpton is slated to face the Cubs Sunday.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Offense explodes in Brandon Cumpton's first win

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/7/2014) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton bounced back from his worst start with his first win of the season Friday, and he got plenty of help to take down the Brewers.

Cumpton fell a couple of outs short of a quality start, but ended up limiting the Brewers to three runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out three, while throwing 79 pitches in the win.

Cumpton has allowed three or fewer runs in three of his five starts this season, and is now 1-2 with a 6.51 ERA in 27 2/3 innings. His next start is set for Wednesday against the Cubs.

Brandon Cumpton blasted for 11 runs vs. Dodgers

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/31/2014) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton had a night to forget Saturday, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings while striking out two in his team's 12-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Cumpton's ERA jumped from 3.38 to 6.85 in the loss, and he owns a 12:4 K:BB ratio in 22 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Brewers Friday.

Brandon Cumpton lowers ERA to 3.38 in no-decision

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/26/2014) Pirates starting pitcher Brandon Cumpton pitched well over six innings Monday against the Mets, but he walked away with a no-decision as runs were hard to come by in The Big Apple. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk, while striking out one in six innings.

Cumpton, who took over for Wandy Rodriguez in the rotation, was locked in a scoreless duel with Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom until New York broke the tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

After deGrom singled and Juan Lagares drew a walk, Daniel Murphy roped a single to right field. deGrom scored easily, but the throw from right fielder Josh Harrison got away from third baseman Pedro Alvarez, which allowed Lagares to sprint home. Lagares was initially ruled out as catcher Russell Martin picked Alvarez's poor throw from the dirt and applied the tag on a sliding Lagares. However, the play was overturned after the umps reviewed the play and ruled Martin was blocking the plate.

Cumpton, who lowered his ERA to 3.38 in his third start, was on the hook for the loss until Pittsburgh tied the game at 2 in the eighth. Cumpton is expected to be back on the mound Saturday against the Dodgers.

Brandon Cumpton runs out of steam in no-decision

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/2/2014) Pirates starter Brandon Cumpton started off strong in the second half of Thursday's doubleheader against the Orioles, but ran into trouble in the sixth inning of a no-decision, as the Pirates went on to lose, 6-5.

Cumpton opened the outing with five scoreless innings, while the offensive built up a four-run lead. Unfortunately, he hit a wall in the sixth and let the lead slip away, allowing three-straight two-out hits before being pulled for a reliever.

All four batters Cumpton allowed to reach base in the sixth inning came around to score, and each was charged to him. He finished the game with four runs allowed one seven hits without a walk, while striking out four batters. Cumpton settled for a no-decision as the game went into extra innings.

Cumpton now has a 4.26 ERA in two starts this season, with an 0-1 record. He is set to take the mound again next Wednesday against the Giants.

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(4/24/2014) Pirates starter Brandon Cumpton pitched well enough to earn the win, but was outdueled by Tony Cingrani Thursday.

Cumpton only allowed four hits and two walks over seven innings. His biggest problem came from Joey Votto, who reached base three times against Cumpton. Things went fairly well for Cumpton until the sixth inning. After hitting both Joey Votto and Todd Frazier with pitches, Cumpton allowed a two-run double to Ryan Ludwick. After a mound visit, he was able to settle in and get the final out of the inning. He made it through a scoreless seventh, but was replaced before the eighth inning.

Cumpton allowed just two earned runs over his seven innings. He struck out five batters. The loss dropped him to 0-1. His next start should come against the Orioles if Pittsburgh opts to keep Cumpton in the rotation.
