Pirates reinstate Francisco Liriano, option Casey Sadler

(4/13/2015) The Pirates reinstated pitcher Francisco Liriano from the paternity list Monday and optioned pitcher Casey Sadler to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Liriano was initially scheduled to pitch Sunday before being placed on the paternity list for the birth of his daughter. Sadler drew the start instead, giving up two runs and earning a win. Liriano is on track to make his return to the mound Wednesday against the Tigers.

(4/12/2015) Pirates pitcher Casey Sadler picked up a win in his season debut Sunday, allowing two earned runs on four hits and one walk in five innings while striking out five in his team's 10-2 victory over the Brewers.

Sadler (1-0) pitched well Sunday, with his only big mistake coming on a two-run home run in the third inning. The Pirates managed to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning to put him in line for the win, and the bullpen was able to do its job over the final four innings.

Sadler, who was making a spot start with Francisco Liriano on the paternity list, will likely be headed back to the minors to make his next appearance.

"I know I have to go down and keep working hard so I am ready the next time the phone rings," he said. "This was a nice, but I wanted to be up here all the time."


Pirates place Liriano on paternity list, recall Casey Sadler

(4/11/2015) The Pirates have placed pitcher Francisco Liriano on the paternity list and recalled pitcher Casey Sadler from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Sadler will take the place of Liriano as Sunday's probable starter. Liriano is expected to be back on the mound Wednesday to start against the Tigers.

(3/19/2015) The Pirates announced Thursday they optioned elite pitching prospect Jameson Taillon to Triple-A Indianapolis. They also optioned pitcher Casey Sadler and infielder Alen Hanson to Triple-A.

Outfielder Willy Garcia was optioned to Double-A Altoona, while pitchers Collin Balester, Jeremy Bleich, infielder Gift Ngoepe and outfielder Mel Rojas Jr. were reassigned to minor-league camp.

(3/8/2015) Pirates pitcher Casey Sadler threw three perfect innings Sunday while facing a lineup filled with most of Toronto's regulars in his team's 1-0 win over the Blue Jays.

"I think every time you go out in Spring Training, you want to face their guys," Sadler said after the start, per MLB.com. "Not only does it give you a chance to see where you're at; it gives you a chance to go up against the best. That's what you want to do."

Sadler has yet to allow a hit in five innings this spring. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A.


Pirates add six to expanded roster

(9/2/2014) The Pirates added six players to the active roster Tuesday, as part of their September roster expansion.

The team purchased the contract of infielder Chase d'Arnaud from Triple-A Indianapolis, and recalled pitchers Bobby LaFromboise , John Holdzkom, Jeff Locke and Casey Sadler , as well as outfielder Gregory Polanco from Triple-A.

Sadler allowed two earned runs in two-thirds innings of work during his one-day stint, and now has a 7.71 ERA in 9 1/3 innings in the majors this season.

Locke will make the start Monday against the Giants. He posted a 3.52 ERA in 166 1/3 innings with Pittsburgh last year.
