Astros loan Japhet Amador to Mexican League team

(4/22/2014) The Astros have loaned infielder Japhet Amador to Los Diablos Rojos del Mexico for the remainder of the Mexican League season, MLB.com reports.

Amador was 6 for 28 with eight RBI with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. He has extensive history with the Mexican League team, most recently hitting .368/.419/.693 with 36 home runs and 121 RBI last season.

The club was thinking of asking Amador's Mexican League team, the Mexico City Red Devils, for more time with the first baseman. Amador was held up in camp due to a family issue, and got a late start on his season. Amador was expected to compete for the first base job, but the family issue may prevent him from making the club.

Amador stayed in Mexico to deal with a family emergency, which led to him reporting to camp late. Amador was expected to compete for a starting spot with the club, but his absence early in camp may have hurt his chances.


Japhet Amador needs a week to get ready

(3/3/2014) Astros first baseman Japhet Amador , who missed the start of spring training as he tended to his pregnant wife, won't play in Grapefruit League games for at least a week, the Houston Chronicle reports. 

Amador, 27, hit .368 with 36 home runs over 400 Mexican League at-bats last season. He is listed at 6'4" and 315 pounds. 

Amador is likely headed to the minors to start the season, but the Astros have some pieces that can be moved to accomodate him at first base or designated hitter, if he forces his way onto the roster. Despite his size, Amador has drawn some praize for his first base defense, and even drew early comparisons to Andres Galarraga.

Amador stayed in Mexico to deal with a family emergency, which delayed his arrival in camp. He's hoping to start playing in games in 3-4 days. Amador said he's hoping to compete for the job at first base.

"We’re talking right now," agent Oscar Suarez said. "We’re just trying to figure it out."

Amador is dealing with a family emergency in Mexico, and it's unclear when he'll be ready to return. "We don’t know what the next steps are for him, but for now he needs to spend some time with his family," general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "We’re going to give him the time that he needs. Right now we’re proceeding as if he’s not going to be here during spring training."

Amador was expected to compete for the job at first during camp.
