by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/30/2013) The Diamondbacks reassigned pitcher Nelson Figueroa to minor-league camp Friday. Figueroa allowed five earned runs in nine Cactus League innings this spring but also shined in Team Puerto Rico's elimination of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, shutting out Team USA for six innings.

Figueroa split time between the Red Sox and Yankees' Triple-A affiliates in 2012, posting a 3.89 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 69 strikeouts in 115 2/3 innings.

Nelson Figueroa stuns Team USA

(3/16/2013) Diamondbacks pitcher Nelson Figueroa came through big for Puerto Rico in Friday's elimination game against Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Figueroa, who has not pitched since 2011, held Team USA in check as he tossed six shutout innings and allowed just two hits in a 4-3 victory.

The 38-year-old veteran also struck out two and issued just one walk as he improved his ERA to 1.80 in the tournament.

"We were supreme underdogs against that lineup," Figueroa said. "It was motivation to show them what kind of pitcher I was."

Figueroa is not expected to pitch for the Diamondbacks this year in the majors.
