Cubs give Yorvit Torrealba a minor league deal

(6/12/2014) The Cubs have signed veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league contract. He will report to Mesa.

Torrealba was released by the Angels late in spring training and has yet to play a major league game this season.

(3/23/2014) The Angels announced Sunday they released Carlos Pena, Yorvit Torrealba and Chad Tracy. Sunday was the deadline to put them on the 40-man roster.

Yorvit Torrealba balks at possible trip to Triple-A

(3/22/2014) Dodgers veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba has dismissed any possibility of accepting a minor league assignment, per the Los Angeles Times.

Torrealba, who has an opt-out available, said there was "zero chance" he would be OK with playing at Triple-A. He has not spent significant time in the minors since 2001.

Torrealba spent 2013 in Colorado, hitting .240/.295/.285 with no home runs and 16 RBI in 179 at-bats with the Rockies.

(9/26/2013) Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba was forced to leave Wednesday's game against the Red Sox after suffering a right thumb injury. Torrealba had X-rays taken on the thumb, which came back negative, and he was diagnosed with a contusion. Torrealba is day to day as a result of the injury.

Torreabla has been dealing with a concussion, and the team wants to be safe. Manager Walt Weiss said that while Torreabla likely won't be activated Monday, he'll be ready soon. Torreabla is hitting .252/.314/.294 in 143 at-bats. 


Yorvit Torrealba goes on disabled list

(8/19/2013) The Rockies have officially placed catcher Yorvit Torrealba on the disabled list Monday, the Denver Post reports. Torrealba left Sunday's game against Baltimore after being hit in the facemask by a foul ball. 

Torrealba, who was placed on the 7-day disabled list for concussions, passed his initial concussion tests but further tests proved he needed to be shelved. There is no timetable for his return as of yet.

(8/19/2013) Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba left Sunday's game against the Orioles after being hit in the facemask by a foul ball in the eighth inning. Rockies manager Walt Weiss said the Rockies will monitor Torrealba closely before putting him back in the lineup.

"He was a little wobbly, so I didn't want him to have to go up there and take his at-bat (in the ninth inning)," Weiss said, per MLB.com. "We'll determine where we're going after that."

Torrealba said he passed initial concussion tests, but he will undergo more testing Monday.

"I got smoked, but I'm fine," Torrealba said.

(6/15/2013) Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba drove in a run with a double to deep left-center field Friday in a loss against Philadelphia.

Torrealba went 2 for 3 in the game with a walk. He scored a run and is batting .289 for the season.

The 34-year-old backstop has appeared in seven games in June with six starts made. He's gone 8 for 21 (.381) over that stretch with three doubles and two RBI.

(2/14/2013) Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba told MLB.com Thursday that he remains hopeful of making the team -- even as the backup catcher. Torrealba signed a minor-league deal in January and will have to work his way behind Wilin Rosario, veteran Ramon Hernandez and potentially even ordan Pacheco, who caught on a few occasions last year and is in camp with the catchers this year. "Obviously, you're getting older, you don't move the same, you don't hit the same, all you can do is just teach young guys -- that's how you become as a backup catcher," he said. "I never consider myself a backup because I really believe I can do the job playing every day. But there's going to be a year where I have to do it, no matter what. Maybe this is it, this is the year to do it."

(1/24/2013) The Rockies signed catcher Yorvit Torrealba to a minor-league contract Thursday, according to CBSSports.com MLB Insider Jon Heyman. Financial details of Torrealba’s deal are not yet known. He spent last season with three different teams, as he was shuttled between Texas, Toronto and Milwaukee.
