by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(5/13/2013) The Mets added another player to their carousel in the outfield Monday, signing free agent Rick Ankiel and immediately popping him into the starting lineup at center field. Mets discussing deal for Rick Ankiel

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(5/13/2013) Desperately seeking a spark in their stagnant outfield, the Mets have discussed a possible deal for free agent Rick Ankiel, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports. Ankiel was released by the Astros last week after hitting just .194 with five home runs in 25 games.

New York's outfield has been a sore spot this season as the team has lacked consistent production from the position and posted a collective .222 batting average, which includes a .182 mark from its center fielders. Overall, the Mets scored just 14 runs on their recent six-game homestand.

(5/6/2013) The Astros designated outfielders Rick Ankiel and Fernando Martinez for assignment Monday to make room on the roster for the recalls of Trevor Crowe and Jimmy Paredes, MLB.com reports.

The 33-year-old Ankiel couldn't hit consistently as he batted .194 in 62 at-bats with five homers and 11 RBI.

Martinez, 24, was 1 for 19 over his last seven appearances and is batting .182 overall with a homer and three RBI in 33 at-bats.

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com

Ankiel finished 1 for 3 with the solo blast in the seventh inning, extending his hitting streak to four games and lifting his average to .237.

The well-traveled veteran now has five homers in 15 games this season to match his total from last year with Washington in 53 fewer games.

Opening day a distant memory for Rick Ankiel

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/17/2013) It's been a quick decline for Astros outfielder Rick Ankiel since homering and driving in three runs opening day against the Rangers. The veteran outfielder has homered just once and has five RBI in his last 10 games (six starts).

His batting average has really suffered since opening day. Ankiel is batting just .120 (3 for 25) with 19 strikeouts in his last 10 games.

Rick Ankiel comes up big for the Astros

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/31/2013) Astros outfielder Rick Ankiel came up big in a pinch-hit appearance during Sunday's season opener against the Rangers.

Ankiel took Derek Lowe deep in the sixth inning for a three-run home run. He finished 1 for 2 with three RBI in an 8-2 victory. The 33-year-old entered Sunday 0 for 14 for his career on opening day before launching his first home run of the season.

Astros officially purchase Rick Ankiel's contract

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(3/31/2013) The Astros have purchased Rick Ankiel's contract and added him to the opening day roster, the club announced Sunday.

Ankiel was the club's biggest surprise in camp, as he hit .413/.463/.826 with four home runs and five doubles in 54 spring plate appearances. Ankiel played in 68 games for Washington in 2012 and hit .228/.282/.411 (86 OPS+) with five home runs.

Ankiel will get heavy at-bats in right field for the Astros this year. Brandon Barnes and J.D Martinez will be in the mix as well, as will Fernando Martinez when he returns from an oblique injury.

Rick Ankiel will have AL-only value

by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/27/2013) Fun fact: The only season in which Rick Ankiel had 400 at-bats (2008, with 413), he hit .264, with 25 home runs, 71 RBI, and 65 runs scored. Since 2008, Ankiel has hit .234 and showed a marked decline in power. But given the chance to play regularly in the bandbox that is Minute Maid Park -- he's looking like the starter in right field for the Astros -- Ankiel could see a nice boost in output. In 60 career at-bats at Minute Maid, Ankiel has hit .300, with an OPS of .797 (and yes, I'm cleverly concealing the fact that he's only hit one home run there to make this point).

Ankiel won't be someone you go after hard in AL-only leagues, but as a last-round reserve pick, he does have the chance to return some nice upside for your team.

Rick Ankiel biggest 'surprise' of camp

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/27/2013) The Astros consider outfielder Rick Ankiel the biggest "surprise" of the spring, according to the Houston Chronicle. Ankiel has the chance to be the team's starting right fielder in 2013. Ankiel is batting .415 (17 for 41) with one triple, three homers, four doubles and six RBI in 19 spring games.

Rick Ankiel cementing spot on roster

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(3/23/2013) Houston outfielder Rick Ankiel, who is expected to break camp as a bench option for the Astros, had a nice game Saturday.

Ankiel came off the bench against Atlanta to supply the team's only two hits. He doubled off Jordan Walden and homered off Craig Kimbrel in the ninth.

Ankiel should open the season as Houston's right fielder against right-handed starters. He is hitting .395 this spring with three homers, four doubles and six RBI.

Rick Ankiel continues to make case for playing time

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/16/2013) Astros outfielder Rick Ankiel homered off Stephen Strasburg during his three plate appearances against the Nationals on Saturday, continuing his bid to make the Astros this spring. Ankiel has 12 hits in 28 at-bats, including two home runs, and has hits in five of his last six games.

The Astros will likely be looking for offense in what figures to be a rebuilding year, and Ankiel could find his way into siginificant playing time in an outfield that is far from set.

Ankiel off to torrid start

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/28/2013) Rick Ankiel is off to a hot start in his bid to earn a job with the Houston Astros. Ankiel singled in the third inning and homered in the fifth off Mike O'Brien in the Houston Astros' 7-6 win over a New York Yankees' split squad on Thursday. The 33-year-old ex-pitcher is 6 for 9 (.667) with a double, triple and home run. "I'm sure I'll have dips," Ankiel said. "I don't think I can keep at the pace I'm going, but it's really not about that. What I'm looking for is trying to see the ball and get good pitches to hit. The results you can't control, but I can control which pitches I swing at."
