Ryan Ludwick sitting Thursday, but not with an injury

(4/3/2014) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick was not in the team's starting lineup Thursday, according to MLB.com.

Ludwick was hit on the wrist during the fourth inning Wednesday, but his absence from the lineup is not injury-related. Chris Heisey got the start in Ludwick's place. Manager Bryan Price said Ludwick's wrist is a "non-issue." "We're just trying to keep some of these other guys fresh," Price said.

Reds manager reveals batting order for 2014 season

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/19/2014) Reds manager Bryan Price announced Wednesday his projected batting order for when a right-handed pitcher is on the mound.

Price said Billy Hamilton will lead off, and he will be followed by Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Ryan Ludwick, Todd Frazier, Devin Mesoraco and Zack Cozart.

Price said he would likely switch Bruce and Ludwick in the lineup when a left-handed starter is on the hill.

Price also reiterated he hasn't given much thought to batting Votto second.

Ryan Ludwick says it 'feels good to be strong again'

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/17/2014) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick finally feels at 100 percent after missing most of last season because of a shoulder injury, which required in-season surgery.

"I got cleared to lift upper-body weights I think it was Nov. 6," he said, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It feels good to be strong again.

"The thing a lot of people don't understand when you come off surgery and you rehab for four months, you're not as strong as you're going to be the following year. I had surgeries. You're never back to feeling really good until about a year post-op. I guess one of the positive things is I got a lot of rest. I didn't need any motivation this offseason."

Ryan Ludwick gives it his best shot

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(10/1/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick recorded three hits, including two doubles, as Cincinnati dropped the National League wild card playoff game at Pittsburgh Tuesday.

Ludwick was one of the hitting stars for the Reds in a 6-2 loss. He went 3 for 4 with two doubles in the game.

The 35-year-old hit just .240 for the Reds this season as he managed just 38 games as he spent most of the year on the disabled list. He homered twice with 12 RBI on the regular season.

Ludwick is 8 for 31 over his first 11 games, with four of those hits coming Friday and Saturday against the Brewers.

(8/14/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick is expected to be in the team's starting lineup Wednesday against the Cubs, according to MLB.com.

Ludwick was reinstated from the disabled list Monday, and started his first game since April. He was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday, but did manage to pinch hit. Manager Dusty Baker did not want to play Ludwick during a day game following Monday's night game.

Ryan Ludwick only a desperation add

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/12/2013) Normally, the numbers a player puts together on a rehab assignment would mean nothing to me, but for a power hitter coming back from shoulder surgery, a .136 batting average and just two extra-base hits in 44 at-bats says something.

It says the Reds' Ryan Ludwick might have a long road back to respectability.

He tore his labrum on opening day, and though I think he's perfectly capable of regaining his power stroke following that procedure, I'm not sure four months is enough time.

But we'll find out, won't we? Particularly in leagues that require the use of five outfielders, power is scarce on the waiver wire, and Ludwick did hit 26 homers in 422 at-bats last year. He at least has a chance of providing something in that category, and for that reason, I'm taking a flier on him in a 12-team Rotisserie league myself. I'm just not too optimistic about what he'll give me.

Ryan Ludwick makes long-awaited return

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/12/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick (shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list Monday. Ludwick, who has been out since early April, hit .136 (6 for 44) with one double, one home run and four RBI in 13 games on a rehab assignment.

Ludwick was immediately inserted into the starting lineup Monday against the Cubs, batting sixth.

Ryan Ludwick ready for action

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/10/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick is ready to make his return from the disabled list, and he will activated prior to Monday's game against the Cubs. Ludwick has finished his rehab assignment and will be in the lineup Monday for the first time since tearing the labrum in his right shoulder on opening day.

Ludwick struggled in his rehab assignment, going just 6 for 44 between Class A Dayton and Triple-A Louisville, but he did improve as he went on.

“At the plate, it’s been tougher than I thought, I’ll be honest with you,” Ludwick told the Cincinnati Enquirer Saturday. “Breaking it down, I hit for two-and-a-half months before I go to spring training then you have all camp to get ready and everyone’s starting on an even playing field. I got a week-and-a-half and then got thrown in with everyone in mid-season form. The timing of the game is tough, but it got better little-by-little. The shoulder, the body feels really good.”

Ryan Ludwick expected to return Monday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/9/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick (shoulder) is expected to return from the disabled list Monday, according to MLB.com. Ludwick had gone 4-for-36 with one homer during his minor-league rehab assignment entering Friday. Manager Dusty Baker is expected to ease him back into the lineup.

"We've got a plan. He probably won't be here this weekend, but he will be here soon," Baker said.

Ryan Ludwick, Ryan Hanigan 'close' to returning

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/6/2013) Reds manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday injured outfielder Ryan Ludwick (shoulder) and catcher Ryan Hanigan (wrist) are "close" to returning. Both players could be back by the end of the week.

Ryan Ludwick expected back next week

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(8/3/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick (shoulder) is expected to return next week, according to GM Walt Jocketty, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Out since opening day, Ludwick moved his rehab assignment to Triple-A Louisville Thursday.

Ryan Ludwick making progress in rehab

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/1/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick has moved his rehab assignment up to Triple-A Louisville, as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. He went 0 for 3 in Wednesday's game, lowering his average to .111 in three games.

Though Ludwick has not played since the Reds' first game of the season, he has had to stress to himself that he cannot rush his way back, despite his lengthy absence.

"Obviously the competitor in me is trying to push it along because I want to get there as soon as possible," Ludwick told FoxSportsOhio.com. "But in the back of my mind I also know that this is a process and I’ve been out for a long time and I need to be right before I go up there because if I’m not I don’t want to go up there and stink and hurt the team."

Ludwick was expected to be a big part of the Reds' plans this season, after he hit .275 with 26 home runs in 2012. There remains no immediate timeline for his return.

Ryan Ludwick could be steal off waivers

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/31/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick is just sitting on waivers for opportunistic Fantasy owners. The veteran outfielder, who is working his way back from shoulder surgery, is owned in just 15 percent of leagues as his return to the Reds' lineup might not be too far off.

I can definitely understand the concern for Fantasy owners that Ludwick's shoulder injury could affect his swing. It's not like he's off to a great start to his rehab assignment, batting .167 (2 for 12) with one double and one RBI in five games between Class A Dayton and Triple-A Louisville.

But I argue: Where's the real risk? If you have an available bench spot or are already considering dropping someone from your roster, then why not consider Ludwick? Here is a player that hit 26 home runs and slugged .531 last season. He's also hitting .271 with a .569 slugging percentage and 25 home runs in 97 career games at Cincinnati's bandbox ballpark.

It seems like a relatively small investment for a player that could pay huge dividends down the stretch.

Ryan Ludwick begins rehab assignment

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/24/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick began his rehab assignment with Class A Dayton Wednesday, going 1 for 2 with a walk as the team's designated hitter before leaving for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

Ludwick is recovering from shoulder surgery that has sidelined him for nearly the entire season. He walked twice in two plate appearances on opening day before suffering the injury.

Ryan Ludwick to begin rehab assignment Wednesday

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(7/21/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick will begin a rehab assignment with Low Class-A Dayton on Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Ludwick suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery on Opening Day, so the rehab assignment will have to serve as a spring training of sorts for him. He will likely need somewhere near the maximum 20 days on assignment before he is ready.

Ryan Ludwick could begin rehab assignment next week

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/19/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick could begin a rehab assignment next week, MLB.com reports. He has been out since opening day due to shoulder surgery.

"He looked real good," Reds manager Dusty Baker told MLB.com Friday. "These other guys are four months ahead of him and he’s kind of a slow starter anyway. … We have to give him enough at-bats so when he comes back, it’s not Spring Training."

Ludwick hit .276/.345/.531 with 26 home runs and 80 RBI in 422 at-bats last season.

Ryan Ludwick to return to game action by end of the month

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(7/4/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick is slated to go on a rehab assignment by the end of the month, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Ludwick, who has been recovering from shoulder surgery from an injury suffered Opening Day, said his swing feels 85 percent and his shoulder is pain free. He's on pace for a mid-August return.

Ryan Ludwick resumes baseball activities

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/2/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick, who is working his way back from shoulder surgery, has recently resumed baseball activities, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Ludwick is not expected to return until August at the earliest.

"I'm throwing, I'm hitting off a tee -- I'm doing everything but hit live," Ludwick said.

Ryan Ludwick beginning on-field throwing

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(6/14/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick will make his first on-field throws since undergoing shoulder surgery in April, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Ludwick is still likely two months away from returning to the Reds. He played in just one game in this season before the injury.

Ryan Ludwick out until mid-August

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5/26/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick's injured shoulder will keep him out until mid-August, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Ludwick said he won't be cleared to resume baseball activities until at least July 3, and he will likely need another month and a half before a return between regaining strength in the shoulder and going on a rehab assignment. He suffered the injury on opening day and has been replaced in left field by Xavier Paul and Donald Lutz.

No Ryan Ludwick until August

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/25/2013) Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick was adamant that he will not be able to return from labrum surgery by the All-Star break, when asked by the Cincinnati Enquirer Saturday.

"People seem to be under the impression that I’ll be back in the middle of July and that’s a complete lie," Ludwick said. "I can't even resume baseball activities until July 3, so it's at least the middle of August. I can't even throw a baseball or swing a bat until July. I've got a whole lot of stuff to do. I've got to get in baseball shape, as they call it. You take three, four months from throwing a baseball, it's going to take a while to get your arm back in shape."

Ludwick has been out since opening day, and he has begun doing rehabilitation work, but is not close to returning. Judging by his words, he should not be expected back until August at the earliest.
