Travis Hafner wants to continue playing

(1/16/2014) Former Yankees designated hitter Travis Hafner would still like to play.

Hafner recently joined Notre Dame's basketball team as an assistant coach, but said he still wants to play baseball. The 36-year-old is still working out, and said his body feels good. He is currently a free-agent.

(11/6/2013) In addition to second baseman Robinson Cano, outfielder Curtis Granderson and starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, who were extended qualifying offers, and starting pitcher Phil Hughes, who was not, the Yankees have had several players file for free agency, including starting pitcher Andy Pettitte, designated hitter Travis Hafner, shortstop Brendan Ryan, third baseman Kevin Youkilis, relief pitcher Boone Logan, first baseman Lyle Overbay, relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain and first baseman Mark Reynolds. Pettitte is expected to retire.

Hafner, who has been out since July due to a rotator cuff strain, hopes to rejoin the Yankees roster in late September.

(8/15/2013) Yankees designated hitter Travis Hafner is not sure when he's going to return, according to the Star-Ledger.

Hafner has been out since late July, and has yet to be cleared for a hitting program. He is set to be evaluated early next week. When asked when he'll be ready, Hafner said "I don’t have a very good feel, but it’s improving every day, so that’s encouraging."

Hafner is hitting .205/.300/.384 in 258 at-bats.

(8/12/2013) Yankees designated hitter Travis Hafner, who has been out since late July with a strained right rotator cuff, is not making much progress according to manager Joe Girardi Monday, The Journal News reports. 

"He feels better," Girardi said. "He's continuing his rehab. He's not ready to do baseball activities yet, though."

Hafner might have a tough time making it back to the Yankees even when healthy. The team has plenty of options at DH at this point.

Hafner doubled for Alberto Gonzalez in the seventh inning and was pinch-run for by Eduardo Nunez.

Hafner is day-to-day with a left foot contusion. He's batting .218 with 12 homers and 37 RBI.

Hafner was 0 for 2 in the game with a strikeout before leaving and is batting .215 on the year. The 36-year-old has gone just 1 for 19 over his last six games.

Hafner is batting .250 (6 for 24) with five RBI in his last six games, which comes on the heels of a 0-for-23 slump over a six-game span from June 7-14.

(6/17/2013) Yankees DH Travis Hafner connected for a three-run homer as part of a five-run third inning against Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver during Sunday's 6-5 win. It was Hafner's 11th home run and third in June.

Hafner is batting .128 (5 for 39) with three home runs, five walks and seven RBI in 11 June games. He has just one multi-hit game in his last 19 appearances (16 starts). He's batting .127 (8 for 63) in that span, dropping his average from .275 to .221.

Hafner finished 1 for 3 with a walk and the two-run home run. Hafner also struck out twice, and his limited contact has resulted in a .246 batting average. Despite those issues, he's slugging .507 and providing the Yankees with the power bat they needed against right-handed pitching.

The slugger finished 1 for 4 and is batting .245. It was Hafner's first homer since going deep in back-to-back games on May 18 and 20 against Toronto and Baltimore.
