News: According to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman, former major league reliever Kiko Calero is considering a stem cell procedure similar to the one that Bartolo Colon underwent. Calero is hoping to make a comeback after not pitching in the majors since the 2009 season.
Analysis: Calero has floated around the Triple-A clubs for the Mets and Dodgers, but did not pitch at all last year. The right-hander, who turned 37 years old last January, has played for three teams during his major league career and posted a 3.24 ERA over his seven seasons. Colon experienced quality success with the Yankees in 2011 after the procedure, but it's not a guarantee Calero would. Leave him untouched in all Fantasy formats.
News: The Dodgers have released reliever Kiko Calero from his minor-league contract Friday.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career anyway. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues now that he is out of a job.
News: The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed RP Kiko Calero to a minor-league contract. Calero was released by the Mets in May.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Mets released minor league pitcher Kiko Calero on Sunday.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The following Mets players did not make the final 25-man opening day roster: INF Russ Adams, RP Kiko Calero, RP Elmer Dessens, RP Carlos Muniz and C Luke Montz.
Analysis: The players listed above are all simply organizational depth for the Mets. They could each garner some Fantasy value in NL-only leagues if they ever return to the active roster. Still, until then, they can be wholly ignored.
News: Mets' manager Jerry Manuel admits he sees prospect Jenrry Mejia through a prism because of the dire need for an eighth-inning guy, but said he probably wouldn't start him in that role right away. He'd like to ease him in, but then that leaves the setup spot still up in the air for opening day. Right-handed relievers Bobby Parnell and Ryota Igarashi, a Japanese pitcher signed to a major-league contract, are candidates, and former Marlins reliever Kiko Calero signed a minor-league deal last week to enter the mix. "I came in here to try to make the team first and then I can figure out sixth, seventh or eighth inning, whatever they say my job is," Calero said. Manuel virtually eliminated the idea of a setup man by committee early in camp and said the eighth-inning pitcher is the biggest hole that needs to be filled. "For me, that's something I have to make sure I get out of in spring training, is that I feel confident in that role," Manuel said.
Analysis: The 35-year-old right-hander Calero had what he called his best season while pitching for the Marlins last year when he compiled a 1.95 ERA in 67 relief appearances, striking out 69 batters and walking 30 in 60 innings. Shoulder issues have been a concern ever since he tore his rotator cuff in 2007, but he said he feels "great." Calero missed more than 50 games in 2008 and spent two weeks on the DL last season because of inflammation in the shoulder. Calero has yet to appear in a spring training game since signing. He is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men, if he gets time on the roster this season.
News: The Mets and right-hander Kiko Calero have agreed to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training. The Mets announced the move in a statement Thursday. Calero is 14-12 with seven saves and a 3.24 ERA in 313 career games. Over 302 2/3 innings, he has surrendered 236 hits with 126 walks and 324 strikeouts.
Analysis: The 35-year-old Calero pitched for the Florida Marlins last season, going 2-2 with a 1.95 ERA in 67 relief appearances. He allowed 36 hits with 30 walks and 69 strikeouts in 60 innings, leading the Marlins' bullpen in ERA. He is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men, if he gets time on the roster this season. Ignore him on Draft Day.
News: According to Newsday via Twitter, the Mets are considering giving RP Kiko Calero a minor-league deal. They wouldn't want to give him a major-league deal because of his shoulder injuries last year.
Analysis: Calero put together a 1.95 ERA in 60 innings for the Marlins last season, so he can certainly help in deeper Rotisserie leagues if he gets a major-league job somewhere. The uncertainty makes him a better choice as a waiver claim, though.
News: Marlins Nick Johnson and Kiko Calero were among the free agents to file.
Analysis: Johnson has value in deeper mixed leagues with a spring of health and a full-time job. Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Florida RP Kiko Calero (knee) was back in action after a prolonged absence. He pitched in Tuesday's win over the Astros. Calero went one inning and struck out one. His ERA is at 1.99.
Analysis: Calero has minimal Fantasy appeal due to his role, but can be useful in larger Rotisserie formats.
News: Florida RP Kiko Calero (knee) did not pitch in Monday's win over the Astros. He remains day to day.
Analysis: Calero has minimal Fantasy appeal due to his role, but can be useful in larger Rotisserie formats when healthy.
News: MLB.com reports that Marlins reliever Kiko Calero is considered day to day after he left Sunday's game at Philadelphia. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said that with his past history of knee injuries, the team is being extra cautious.
Analysis: In 2003, Calero had surgery to repair a torn right patella. Calero has been used in a late-inning relief role. Matt Lindstrom, Brendan Donnelly, Brian Sanches and Tim Wood are right-handed setup options. Leo Nunez has been used as closer. Calero has minimal Fantasy appeal due to his role, but can be useful in larger Rotisserie formats when healthy.
News: The South Florida SunSentinel reports that Marlins RP Kiko Calero, who left Sunday's win over the Phillies with knee pain, said he was fine after the game.
Analysis: Calero is a decent middle reliever in NL-only formats and should be fine for Fantasy Week 19 (Aug. 10-16), as he only appears once or twice a scoring period anyway.
News: Marlins RP Kiko Calero left in the eighth inning of Sunday's win over the Phillies with right knee pain.
Analysis: Calero is a month removed from a trip to the DL with a shoulder problem, and it looks like he might end up there again. Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the Marlins or the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men, when healthy.
News: The Marlins activated setup man Kiko Calero (shoulder) from the 15-day DL on Thursday.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the Marlins or the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point. He won't be a candidate for saves behind Leo Nunez or Dan L. Meyer yet.
News: Marlins RP Kiko Calero began a Class A rehab assignment with the Jupiter Hammerheads on Saturday. He tossed a scoreless seventh inning, striking out a batter. He may be able to return to work for the team's July 9-12 series with Arizona.
Analysis: Calero was off to a good start with the Marlins before getting injured and could potentially get a chance to get a few saves with Matt Lindstrom on the DL. Calero is just an NL-only Fantasy RP when healthy unless he does in fact figure out a way to get the closer's role, which is unlikely.
News: Marlins RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) is scheduled to throw Saturday and Monday at Class A Jupiter (Florida State League). If all goes well, he could rejoin the Marlins in Arizona next weekend.
Analysis: Calero was really firing the ball before getting injured, posting a 1-0 record with 2.01 ERA. He also had 39 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings. He likely won't get many, if any, chances to close when healthy, so consider him more of a Fantasy middle reliever.
News: The Sun-Sentinel reports that Marlins RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) threw a second bullpen session in three days Wednesday and anticipates beginning a rehabilitation assignment Saturday.
Analysis: Calero appears on track to come off the DL on July 9 or so, but he's only a low-end middle reliever in NL-only formats, when healthy.
News: From The Sports Xchange: RHP Kiko Calero said he hopes to rejoin the Marlins during the team's series in Arizona, which starts July 9. Calero threw off the mound Monday afternoon for the first time since going on the DL on June 21 (retroactive to June 18) with right shoulder inflammation. Calero will throw bullpen sessions again Wednesday and Friday before going on a rehab assignment.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men, once healthy. Don't consider using him in Fantasy Week 14 (July 6-12) unless you're really desperate.
News: From The Sports Xchange: RHP Kiko Calero (shoulder) could rejoin the team this weekend. Out since May 23, he has been throwing on flat ground. He is scheduled to throw off a mound Monday.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men, once healthy. Don't consider him useful in Fantasy Week 13 (June 29-July 5).
News: The Miami Herald reports that Marlins RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) is likely to come off the 15-day DL as soon as he's eligible. In two weeks Im going to be fine, Calero said. I just need to get some strength back.
Analysis: Calero has been a pretty good option at the back-end of the Marlins' bullpen and is a decent Fantasy reliever for leagues that use true middle men. Stash him if he's been useful for you in 2009.
News: The Miami Herald reports that the Marlins placed RP Kiko Calero on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation. The Marlins filled his spot by recalling RHP Tim Wood from Triple-A New Orleans.
Analysis: Calero ranks second in the majors with 36 relief appearances. Calero has been a pretty good option at the back-end of the Marlins' bullpen and is a decent Fantasy reliever for leagues that use true middle men. Wood has less value than Calero.
News: Marlins RP Kiko Calero did not have an easy night on the mound Wednesday against the Red Sox. He entered in the eighth inning as Florida already trailed 5-1 but couldn't get three outs. He was lifted after the sixth batter he faced -- Dustin Pedroia -- recorded a bases-loaded RBI single. It could have been even worse if Jason Varitek wasn't thrown out at home. Calero allowed one hit, three walks and one run in 2/3 innings.
Analysis: Calero allowed a run Wednesday for the first time in 14 outings. So it's not like he has been struggling on the hill. Calero has been a pretty good option at the back-end of the Marlins' bullpen and has 39 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings. Calero is a decent Fantasy reliever for leagues that use true middle men.
News: Marlins reliever Kiko Calero has not allowed a run in his last four outings, lowering his ERA from 3.00 to 2.08. He ranks third in the National League in holds with five.
Analysis: Calero earned a bullpen spot with a great spring and will be a viable middle reliever in deeper Fantasy leagues that use them. Consider adding him in deeper Rotisserie formats right now. He might even be a fallback option to close, if something happens to Matt Lindstrom.
News: Florida RP Kiko Calero (1-0), Florida's fifth pitcher in Saturday's 9-6 extra innings win, was the winner. He pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Calero's performance dropped his ERA to 1.59 on the season.
Analysis: Calero has been a rock solid option for the Marlins in middle relief, allowing only one hit and one earned run on the season, striking out seven and walking two. However, he is merely a middle reliever and can only be used in leagues that reward true middle men and could be the team's closer at some point this season if Matt Lindstrom gets injured.
News: Washington had a chance in the sixth Wednesday against Florida's bullpen, loading the bases with one out off Andrew Miller. From there, Kiko Calero came on and retired a pair of pinch hitters, first Ronnie Belliard by strikeout and then Josh Bard with a lazy fly. "For me, that was the game," manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
Analysis: Calero earned a bullpen spot with a great spring and will be a viable middle reliever in deeper Fantasy leagues that use them. Consider adding him in deeper Rotisserie formats right now. He might even be a fallback option to close, if something happens to Matt Lindstrom.
News: The Marlins finalized their roster after Friday's spring game against Toronto with a series of moves. RHP Carlos Martinez was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans. RHP Brian Sanches was re-assigned to minor league camp. The moves leave the Marlins with a bullpen of right-handers in closer Matt Lindstrom, Leo Nunez, Logan Kensing, Kiko Calero and Hayden Penn and left-handers Renyel Pinto, Dan Meyer and Andrew Miller. Miller will move to the starting rotation on April 15.
Analysis: Martinez and Sanches are merely organizational depth at this point and should not really be considered in Fantasy. Lindstrom will be the team's closer but is a lower-end option at that position. The rest of the players with the exception of Miller are merely middle relievers. Miller will be a low-end Fantasy SP option.
News: Florida RHP Kiko Calero, a non-roster invitee, improved his chances of making the team by throwing a scoreless inning in Sunday's exhibition game against the Nationals. Calero hasn't given up a run in eight innings. "I hate to pump him up because you know how superstitious I am, but he has been impressive," Gonzalez said. "He's an experienced guy in the bullpen."
Analysis: Calero is coming off a torn rotator cuff, so consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career. He'll only be suitable to use in that role if he makes the team.
News: The Marlins signed relief pitcher Kiko Calero to a minor league contract Thursday.
Analysis: Calero is coming off a torn rotator cuff, so consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career.
News: The Rangers signed ex-A's reliever Kiko Calero to a minor league contract Saturday.
Analysis: Calero should be up with the relief-needy Rangers before long, but he is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men at that point.
News: The A's released RP Kiko Calero on Friday. They had designated him for assignment with the activation of Santiago Casilla on June 19.
Analysis: Calero had a 3.86 ERA in five games after opening the season on the 60-day DL with a torn right rotator cuff. There is no reason to own him in Fantasy.
News: The Oakland Athletics activated pitcher Santiago Casilla from the 15-day disabled list Thursday and designated right-hander Kiko Calero for assignment.
Analysis: Calero had a 3.86 ERA in five games after opening the season on the 60-day DL with a torn right rotator cuff. There is no reason to own him in Fantasy.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Kiko Calero appears as if he will be the odd man out when the A's activate RHP Santiago Casilla this week. Rookie Brad Ziegler might have appeared the logical choice earlier in the month, but Ziegler has yet to allow a run in seven career outings, and his submarine style makes him a different look in relief of Oakland's starters. Calero rehabilitated a torn rotator cuff rather than having surgery this offseason, and he hasn't pitched poorly, but he gave up a hit, two walks and two earned runs his last time out and hasn't worked since.
Analysis: Calero or Ziegler are nothing more than low-end middle relievers for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in their careers. Their roles are just not conducive to helping in most formats.
News: The Athletics activated RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) from the 60-day DL and promoted RP Brad Ziegler from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. To make room for him, the A's designated left-hander Lenny DiNardo and infielder Kevin Melillo for assignment.
Analysis: Both Calero and Ziegler will work in middle relief, restricting their Fantasy appeal to the deepest of AL-only leagues.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that A's RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) began a rehab assignment at Class AAA Sacramento on Saturday and gave up a hit and two walks in an inning, while also striking out three.
Analysis: Calero is trying to return from a torn rotator cuff by opting against surgery, a road rarely taken with a shoulder, but we don't give him much of a chance to make a significant impact in any Fantasy league in 2008. Ignore him at this point in everything but the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: A's manager Bob Geren said Saturday that right-hander Kiko Calero has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento. Calero hasn't pitched this season as he recovers from a torn right rotator cuff.
Analysis: Calero is trying to return from a torn rotator cuff by opting against surgery, a road rarely taken with a shoulder, but we don't give him much of a chance to make a significant impact in any Fantasy league in 2008. Ignore him at this point.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that A's RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) is scheduled to throw in back-to-back games at extended spring training on Tuesday and Wednesday and if that goes well, Calero is likely to go on a minor-league rehab assignment. Manager Bob Geren is hopeful that Calero will return to the A's when he is eligible, which is on May 27.
Analysis: Calero is trying to return from a torn rotator cuff by opting against surgery, a road rarely taken with a shoulder, but we don't give him much of a chance to make a significant impact in any Fantasy league in 2008. Ignore him at this point.
News: The A's placed Kiko Calero on the 60-day DL to start the season. He is trying to return from a torn rotator cuff by opting against surgery.
Analysis: Calero is trying a road rarely taken with a shoulder, but we don't give him much of a chance to make a significant impact in any Fantasy league in 2008. Ignore him at this point.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that Athletics RHP Kiko Calero is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day, according to manager Bob Geren. Geren said Calero might throw off the mound during the week of March 10-16.
Analysis: Calero was 1-5 with a save and a 5.75 ERA last year after posting a 3.41 ERA in 70 appearances in 2006. Consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Kiko Calero, who is returning from a torn rotator cuff that he elected to rehab rather than have surgically repaired, is a little behind the other pitchers but is working on the side with pitching coach Curt Young.
Analysis: Calero was 1-5 with a save and a 5.75 ERA last year after posting a 3.41 ERA in 70 appearances in 2006. Consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: The Athletics signed pitcher Kiko Calero to a one-year contract Thursday. The 32-year-old right hander was signed just a day after the team allowed him to become a free agent. Financial terms weren't immediately disclosed. The A's acquired Calero in a 2004 trade that sent Mark Mulder to St. Louis. Calero is 12-10 record with a 3.55 ERA and seven saves in 241 career appearances.
Analysis: Calero, who battled shoulder problems for much of last season, appeared in just 46 games last year. He was 1-5 with a save and a 5.75 ERA last year after posting a 3.41 ERA in 70 appearances in 2006. Consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: The A's opted not to tender contracts to right-handed pitchers Kiko Calero and Jose Garcia, making them free agents. The A's claimed Garcia off waivers from the Florida Marlins on Oct. 11 and designated him for assignment last week. He didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
Analysis: Calero appeared in just 46 games last year because of shoulder problems and was 1-5 with a save and a 5.75 ERA. He was once a decent middle reliever, but he can be ignored in all Fantasy leagues on Draft Day.
News: A's RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) might be out for the season.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men, when healthy. Ignore him while he is shut down.
News: A's RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) did not pitch in relief Sunday against the Rangers.
Analysis: When healthy, Calero was only useful in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle men. With this injury flaring up once again, you might want to forget about him for a while.
News: A's RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) did not pitch in relief Saturday against the Rangers.
Analysis: When healthy, Calero was only useful in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle men. With this injury flaring up once again, you might want to forget about him for a while.
News: A's RP Kiko Calero (shoulder) did not pitch in relief Friday against the Rangers.
Analysis: When healthy, Calero was only useful in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle men. With this injury flaring up once again, you might want to forget about him for a while.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that A's RHP Kiko Calero is experiencing shoulder trouble again and will be shut down for an undetermined amount of time. Calero went on the DL in June with shoulder inflammation and generally has struggled on the mound when he's been available. Manager Bob Geren did say he expected Calero to pitch again before the season ends.
Analysis: When healthy, Calero was only useful in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle men. With this injury flaring up once again, you might want to forget about him for a while.
News: Andrew Brown (2-0) struck out five in two innings of Monday's extra-innings win at Texas. Kiko Calero pitched the 13th to earn his first save in four chances, striking out Marlon Byrd with runners on the corners to end it.
Analysis: Despite the fact he picked up a save, Calero has been pretty shaky lately. Only consider using him in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle men at this point.
News: Kiko Calero (1-5) replaced Dan Haren for the seventh inning on Sunday against the Angels and immediately gave up a single to Chone Figgins and a double to Orlando Cabrera, who reached out of the strike zone on a hit-and-run and dropped a soft liner that fell in short left field. Vladimir Guerrero was walked intentionally and Garret Anderson delivered his game-tying sacrifice fly.
Analysis: Calero ended up allowed two earned runs, three hits and a walk in just two-thirds of an inning, as he takes the loss. Calero is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle men at this point.
News: The Oakland Athletics activated right-hander Kiko Calero from the 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned lefty Dallas Braden to Triple-A Sacramento.
Analysis: Calero had been sidelined since June 17 because of inflammation in his right shoulder. He is 1-4 with a 6.39 ERA in 31 relief appearances with the A's this year. In Fantasy, he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues when healthy.
News: Athletics RP Kiko Calero, who hasn't pitched since June 16 because of inflammation in his right shoulder, could be activated as early as Friday. Calero threw a simulated game before the Athletics' game against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday and pronounced himself fit. "I'd like to pitch (Thursday)," he said. "Right now I'm feeling loose."
Analysis: Calero, who threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, would give the A's bullpen some much needed depth. Closer Huston Street and right-hander Justin Duchscherer have both been on the shelf since the middle of May. Duchscherer is out for the season. A's manager Bob Geren said he would activate Calero on Friday depending on how he felt, but no later than Saturday. In Fantasy, he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues when healthy.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that Kiko Calero is slated to face hitters Thursday, likely in a simulated game. Manager Bob Geren said Calero could be activated Friday or Saturday.
Analysis: To this point, Calero has recovered well from shoulder inflammation. His healthy return would be a boost for a bullpen that needs all the effective arms it can find right now. In Fantasy, he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues, when healthy.
News: RHP Kiko Calero (right shoulder inflammation) played catch Tuesday and could return sometime around the All-Star break.
Analysis: Calero is recovering from inflammation in his right shoulder, which he struggled to pitch with for six weeks before going on the injured list. Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues, when healthy.
News: Injured relievers Huston Street (nerve irritation in his right elbow) and Kiko Calero (right shoulder inflammation) are scheduled to throw off a mound Tuesday.
Analysis: Calero is recovering from inflammation in his right shoulder, which he struggled to pitch with for six weeks before going on the injured list. Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues, when healthy.
News:The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Kiko Calero played catch Saturday and Sunday, but he won't be ready to come off the disabled list when he's eligible Monday.
Analysis: Calero is recovering from inflammation in his right shoulder, which he struggled to pitch with for six weeks before going on the injured list. Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues, when healthy.
News: The A's have sent Kevin Melillo back to the minor leagues and called up RP Ruddy Lugo. Also, they placed Kiko Calero on the 15-day DL (right shoulder inflammation) and called up reliever Dallas Braden from the minors.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men, when healthy. Ignore him while on the DL. He will be out until after the All-Star break at least for Fantasy purposes.
News: Kiko Calero, who had shown improvement in June, gave up three earned runs in 2/3 of an inning Saturday.
Analysis: Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: Kiko Calero took his fourth loss of the season Friday vs. Minnesota -- this after he entered 2007 with just five career losses. Calero gave up two hits and two earned runs without getting an out in the top of the 10th against the Twins.
Analysis: But manager Bob Geren continues to express confidence in the reliever, who had strung together several good outings coming into Friday. Calero remains an option in deeper leagues while the A's top closing options are on the shelf. Still, he remains a stopgap option at best.
News: Since blowing a save chance on May 16, Kiko Calero hasn't gotten a sniff of another one.
Analysis: With the expected return of Justin Duchscherer this week and perhaps Huston Street by mid-June, Calero is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues.
News: Kiko Calero (0-3) entered in the ninth inning of Wednesday's game against the Royals, as the A's -- who are dearly missing injured closer Huston Street -- blew his second save in two chances when he allowed hits to John Buck and Ryan Shealy before giving way to Alan Embree. "Right now we know Huston is going to be out," Calero said. "You have to be ready."
Analysis: Calero has been atrocious over the past week and is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues at this point.
News: Oakland placed Huston Street on the DL with nerve irritation in his right elbow. And the team's ninth-inning replacement for the 2005 AL Rookie of the Year, Justin Duchscherer, wasn't available to pitch Tuesday because of an arthritic right hip. Stopgap "closer" Alan Embree allowed a run-scoring single to Emil Brown in the ninth before secondary stopgap "closer" Jay Witasick entered and walked John Buck. Then, Tony Pena's triple skipped over Nick Swisher and traveled to the wall in center to cause Witasick to blow the save. Struggling Kiko Calero had already pitched in the eighth. Jay Marshall, a rookie Rule-5 draftee, and Lenny DiNardo are the other members of the A's bullpen and they cleaned up in the extra-inning victory.
Analysis: Duchscherer was reportedly going to assume the primary closer job, but several others could be used in ninth-inning situations. If you're looking for a sleeper at this point, consider Calero. He has the most potential, even though he has struggled to date. Embree is a situational lefty and he stunk Tuesday. Witasick had been pitching the best, but he blew Tuesday's save -- and perhaps future chances to save games. Marshall is too young and raw to trust as a closer and DiNardo is more of a long reliever than a stopper.
News: According to MLB.com, the A's placed RP Huston Street on the 15-day DL Tuesday with an irritation in his right ulnar nerve. The move is retroactive to May 13.
Analysis: Street is 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA in 18 relief appearances. He has all nine of the A's saves this year. His last save came on May 6, but he did make an appearance Saturday and struck out two Indians during an inning of work. Elbow injuries can be tricky, so expect the A's to be cautious with their star closer. Keep Street inactive until at least late May. The logical choice to replace Street would be Justin Duchscherer, who has filled in as closer before. However, he is dealing with an arthritic right hip and he also could be headed to the DL. That leaves Kiko Calero as the likely top candidate to close out games while Street is sidelined. Consider taking a stopgap flier on him deep AL-only leagues.
News: The Oakland Athletics took another injury hit Tuesday, placing closer Huston Street on the disabled list with nerve irritation in his right elbow. Justin Duchscherer will assume the primary closer job, but several others also could be used in ninth-inning situations.
Analysis: This news comes as bit of a surprise seeing how Duchscherer is battling an arthritic hip and believes he is also headed for a stint on the DL. For now, he will assume the closer's role and could be used as a stopgap option in AL-only leagues while Street is on the DL. Kiko Calero could also get some save chances, but it appears Duchscherer will get the majority. Calero is still just a middle relief option at this time, but keep an eye on the situation in Oakland.
News: Reliever Kiko Calero made his 200th appearance Wednesday -- not in a year, that would be a record.
Analysis: Calero is a decent middle reliever for those deeper leagues that use true middle men.
News: Kiko Calero allowed three earned runs and three hits, including a game-winning home run to Yuniesky Betancourt, in just one-third of an inning in Tuesday's game at Seattle.
Analysis: Tough start for Calero and his Fantasy owners. His Fantasy value is limited to deeper AL-only formats, especially as long as Justin Duchscherer and closer Huston Street remain healthy.
News: The Athletics agreed to one-year contracts with outfielder Milton Bradley, infielder Marco Scutaro and right-hander Kiko Calero on Tuesday, avoiding arbitration for all three regulars. Calero, who got a $1.6 million deal, was the only member of Oakland's opening-day bullpen who didn't miss time with an injury or move into the starting rotation.
Analysis: Calero led the A's with a career-high 70 appearances last season, going 3-2 with two saves, a career-high 67 strikeouts and a 3.41 ERA. Consider him a solid middle reliever for those deeper leagues that use true middle men. Huston Street and Justin Duchscherer are locked into their late-inning roles, though.
News: RHP Kiko Calero returned to the Bay Area to be his wife, who gave birth to the couple's son. He could miss a few games. "I talked to him today," Macha said. "He's happy. Everything is good."
