McDonald played seven seasons in the majors, most of which came with the Red Sox. He hit .250/.314/.397 in 764 career at-bats.

(10/9/2013) The Cubs outrighted six players off their 40-man roster, MLB.com reports Wednesday.

Outfielder Darnell McDonald, catcher J.C. Boscan and pitcher Trey McNutt all cleared waivers and were outrighted. Additionally, pitchers Rafael Dolis and Zach Putnam and outfielder Thomas Neal were activated from the 60-day disabled list, cleared waivers and were outrighted.

(9/25/2013) Cubs outfielder Darnell McDonald hit his first home run of the season in Wedensday's win over Pittsburgh.

McDonald finished 3 for 4 with a run and the three-run blast. He's hitting .275/.327/.412 over 51 at-bats.

(8/10/2013) The Cubs purchased the contract of outfielder Darnell McDonald from Triple-A Iowa Saturday and added him to the roster, replacing J.C. Boscan. 

McDonald was hitting .236 with a .653 OPS in 263 at-bats for Iowa.

(3/22/2013) The Cubs made another round of roster cuts Friday, moving the following players to their minor-league camp: pitchers Drew Carpenter, Casey Coleman, Jaye Chapman, Jensen Lewis and Blake Parker; outfielders Brian Bogusevic, Darnell McDonald and Johermyn Chavez; and infielders Edwin Maysonet and Brad Nelson. Chicago also optioned Chris Rusin to Triple-A Iowa. He could be a candidate for a spot start later in the season.

McDonald in mix for bench spot


(2/26/2013) Cubs outfielder Darnell McDonald has gone just 1 for 6 (.167) with a homer and three RBI through three Cactus League games but has caught the eye on manager Dale Sveum thus far in camp. "He's obviously been swinging the bat well," Sveum told MLB.com Tuesday. "He's killed left-handed pitching in his career. He's in the mix for one of those spots [on the bench]. He's the ultimate professional, he really works hard and he's a great guy. We're just glad to have him in camp."
