News:Ryan Franklin announced his retirement on Wednesday after 12 seasons in the majors. He pitched for Cardinals in 2011, going 1-4 with an 8.46 ERA in 21 appearances, including 1 for 5 in save chances. He went 62-76 with a 4.14 ERA in 532 appearances (106 starts) in his career, in which he played for four different clubs.
Analysis: Franklin lost the closer's role early in 2011 and never quite rebounded. He was a reliable ninth-inning man for St. Louis from 2008-10, converting 82 of 97 saves over that span, after spending the beginning of his career as a starter. He had his moments in Fantasy but should obviously be ignored in all formats going forward now that he is retired.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin, who was released by the Cardinals in June after losing his job as the closer in April, said Sunday that he's leaning toward retirement, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I know if it started tomorrow I'd be leaning toward staying around the house," Franklin said. "It was pretty neat to be able to take my kids on their first day of school. My wife thought so, too."
Analysis: Franklin first took over as the Cardinals closer in 2008, recording 27 saves as recently as 2010. But he picked up the role relatively late in his career, giving him a short shelf life. He completely fell apart at age 38 this year, posting an 8.46 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in 21 appearances. Even if he returns for 2012, he wouldn't be closing for any team, so you can ignore him on Draft Day.
News: St. Louis released RP Ryan Franklin on Wednesday before the night's game in Baltimore. Franklin last pitched for the Cardinals on Tuesday against the Orioles. He gave up two runs on three hits -- including a homer to J.J. Hardy -- and managed to get just one out. Franklin had an ERA of 8.46 on the year.
Analysis: The 38-year-old former closer for the Red Birds is now out of a job. He'd allowed nine earned runs and five homers in his last four appearances spanning six innings. Over that span, Franklin surrendered 14 hits and simply didn't display the things necessary to get major league hitters out. Franklin has no Fantasy value remaining at this time.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin believes he's fixed a mechanical flaw in his delivery with an extended bullpen session on Friday, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Sunday. Franklin watched video and discovered his leg kick was quicker than in the past. "We're looking at a lot of reasons for what's going on," said Franklin. "There has to be some reason why I get hit like that. There's a reason. My stuff is as good as it's always been. It would be different if that was the case. I know there has got to be a reason."
Analysis: Franklin has a 8.17 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP right now and is in danger of getting designated for assignment by the Cardinals. He really needs to right his ship quickly or risk completely sinking into irrelevance. Fantasy owners can continue to hold out hope that he'll get back to closing games for the Red Birds, but at some point you just have to let it go.
News: St. Louis RP Ryan Franklin (1-4) was tagged for four runs and seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings during the Cardinals' 10-0 loss to Washington on Wednesday night. Franklin replaced SP Kyle McClellan in the sixth inning and surrendered a leadoff double to Ivan Rodriguez. After a sacrifice by Livan Hernandez, Ian Desmond poked a single to score Rodriguez. He then induced a double-play ground ball by Jayson Werth. But he let the leadoff hitter reach base again in the seventh before yielding back-to-back homers to Michael Morse and Danny Espinosa as the Nationals surged to a 9-0 lead.
Analysis: Franklin continues to distance himself further away from the team's closer role as he allowed multiple home runs for the first time this season. It was also the second outing in a row he has been taken deep -- the first occasion since April 17-20 he has relinquished a homer in consecutive games. With Fernando Salas recording 11 saves in 12 chances, Franklin won't return to the ninth inning anytime soon. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end RP option in deeper NL-only formats.
News: Light-hitting Skip Schumaker capped a three-run eighth with a go-ahead infield hit after Ryan Franklin kept it close in the top half of the inning by striking out the side, leading St. Louis to a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night against the Giants. Franklin (1-3) earned his first victory since July 30 in his first appearance at home since April 23 and helped the Cardinals take tough-luck Chris Carpenter off the hook. "I think he's used the time to get his delivery back together and quit tipping," manager Tony La Russa said. "If we're going to stay in this thing, he's a contributor."
Analysis: Franklin's ERA remains an unsightly 7.36, but he's had three straight scoreless outings covering 4 2/3 innings. "It feels good," Franklin said. "It feels real good." While Franklin finally seems to be getting on track, Fernando Salas has done pretty well as the team's unofficial closer, so it's probably going to be a little while before St. Louis even thinks about Franklin in the closer's role. He still has marginal Fantasy appeal.
News: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin had to throw some warm up pitches in the bullpen on Wednesday night as a result of not getting much work lately. Franklin has appeared only twice since May 1. "Just trying to get some work in," Franklin explained. "It's a little bit of everything for me. Mechanically. Confidence in pitches. Pitch selection. I have had an issue with location, and even out there I'm able to work on a lot of things."
Analysis: Franklin, who lost the closer role for the Cardinals, has been used in more of a long-relief role recently. He has allowed six runs and 10 hits over his past 4 1/3 innings. He will have to re-invent himself in the hopes of regaining a more significant role, but right now seems far from it. He should no longer be owned in most Fantasy formats.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin was relieved of his closing duties nearly four weeks ago because of his inability to do his job. Things didn't get much better for him on Saturday against the Reds. Franklin gave up two earned runs on three hits in his 1 1/3 innings of work. He walked one batter and failed to record a strikeout.
Analysis: Franklin has converted just one of his five save opportunities this season and is 0-3. Pair that with his 9.88 ERA and one has to wonder why he is still active in any Fantasy format right now. He lost his role and has continued to spiral downward as the season progresses. There is always a chance he gets things figured out and regains his old gig, but that chance gets smaller every day. For now he should be reserved in the majority of formats, but is worth holding onto in deeper mixed leagues, just in case.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin will work through his pitching troubles in long relief for St. Louis, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Saturday. "Somebody's got to fill that (long relief) role," manager Tony La Russa said. "Right now, you're careful with the way you use him. That would be the idea: give him time to get sharper. That's the theory. Then you have to play out the reality of the game and who's available. I make no promises."
Analysis: Franklin has allowed nine earned runs in his last 10 appearances and has four blown saves and just one converted save over that span with two losses. Needless to say, he's been pitching terribly. If Franklin settles into a groove, then there is always the chance he reclaims the closer's role. But for now he will work in different situations, so he has marginal Fantasy appeal without any save chances.
News: Although demoted Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin allowed the go-ahead RBI single during Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Reds, he still tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings (the runs were charged to Miguel Batista). "If you could go back in the video room and look at all the pitches that I've made, I made a lot of good pitches," Franklin told MLB.com. "It's just that one pitch here, one pitch there that's getting me, that's finding grass. They're falling in, or I made bad pitch selection, or... I'm just trying to keep all the negative things out, man. Because if I keep talking about negative things, then it goes upstairs. You can't. You've got to try to stay positive if you're ever going to get out of a funk."
Analysis: Franklin did manage to keep the ball in the yard on Saturday after allowing a homer in each of his three previous outings. He also threw 21 of his 25 pitches for strikes. "The whole thing is, it's not from a lack of effort," he said. "It's not from a lack of stuff. Because my stuff is just as good as it was two years ago when I didn't give up a run for the first two months of the season. I think it's just a matter of time." If Franklin settles into a groove, then there is always the chance he reclaims the closer's role. But for now he will work in different situations, so he has marginal Fantasy appeal without any save chances.
News: St. Louis RP Ryan Franklin (0-2) surrendered one run on one hit -- a homer -- in two innings of work during the Cardinals' 8-6 loss to Washington in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Franklin, who was making his first appearance since losing the closer job after blowing his fourth save of the season last Sunday, struck out one batter and issued one walk. The right-hander retired four straight batters before Laynce Nix homered in the eighth on a pitch that caused Franklin to recoil in disgust. Jason Motte relieved the struggling Franklin to pitch the ninth inning. After the game, Franklin voiced displeasure with the jeers from Cardinals fans but cleared his comments prior to the nightcap. "Obviously these last 2 1/2 weeks have been frustrating for me, and I'm frustrated with myself," Franklin told MLB.com. "I can understand why the fans are frustrated. I've loved my time here in St. Louis. It's my favorite place to play. It's just a frustrating time for me right now, because I feel like I'm letting everyone down."
Analysis: Part of the reason Franklin lost his role in the ninth inning was his inability to keep the ball in the park. Franklin has now allowed four homers in 6 2/3 innings this season after giving up seven all last year in 65 innings. "They hit one ball hard and everything else I made pitches," Franklin said. "You can't keep being negative on yourself, you've got to try to take something positive out of it." Wednesday's outing certainly won't help Franklin regain ninth-inning duties and Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end option in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats for now.
News: The St. Louis Cardinals have bumped Ryan Franklin out of the closer's role after four blown saves early in the season. Manager Tony La Russa said Tuesday that changing Franklin's responsibilities might help the 38-year-old right-hander get back on track. He didn't say who might replace Franklin in the ninth, but the top candidate probably is Mitchell Boggs. "Whenever the phone rings and they say 'Franklin get up,' I get up," Franklin said. "However they want to put me out there. It doesn't matter, I'm theirs. However they want to treat it, I'm on board."
Analysis: Franklin is 0-2 with an 11.57 ERA in six games and one save in five chances. He was 27 for 29 on save tries last season. Franklin says he's happy with his pitches but blamed himself for poor pitch selection. He gave up a game-winning, two-run homer to the Dodgers' Matt Kemp on Sunday in his last outing. Franklin will certainly be dumped in a number of Fantasy formats with this news, although owners in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues should try to hold on to him in case he regains the role later this season.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin continued his run of poor pitching in Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers. After St. Louis scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to take a 1-0 lead, the right-hander couldn't even record a single out in the bottom half of the frame. He gave up a leadoff double to the first batter he faced before surrendering a two-run, walk-off homer to Matt Kemp. Franklin also gave up a home run to Kemp in his last appearance on Friday night. "I made a good pitch. Anyone can go back and look at it. It was right on the corner and down," Franklin said. "The pitch to Kemp the other night was a mistake. I was trying to get ahead with a first-pitch curveball in a 9-3 game and he hit the first pitch. So what?"
Analysis: Things just keep getting worse for Franklin has he has blown four of his five save opportunities thus far and has not made a scoreless appearance since April 5. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the team will meet to discuss the closer's role so Fantasy owners should stay tuned. "I don't know yet," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "I'm sure we'll talk about what's best for the team and what's best for (Franklin)." The 38-year-old posted a 2.71 ERA while going 65 for 72 in save chances over the past two seasons, so obviously he can get the job done, but has he used up all of his chances? Franklin will hold value in deeper mixed leagues if he remains as closer in St. Louis, but Fantasy owners simply cannot trust him at this point.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin has a 9.64 ERA through his first five appearances this season and has converted just 1 of 4 saves. In his most recent outing on Thursday night against the Dodgers, the right-hander surrendered a solo home run to Matt Kemp in a non-save situation, but otherwise looked good in his inning of work. He told MLB.com on Saturday that he believes that he is on the verge of turning things around. "I feel like I'm getting real close to where I need to be," Franklin said. "Just trying to throw a first-pitch strike to Kemp, and he swung and he didn't miss it. But then I threw every other pitch right where I wanted to, and I got three ground balls."
Analysis: Franklin posted a 2.71 ERA while going 65 for 72 in save chances over the past two seasons so it is peculiar to see him struggle so much this year. "I'm not doing anything different," Franklin said. "The mistakes, I'm making early. They're just not missing. I've had a couple hits of bad luck, but my confidence is where it needs to be. I feel healthy, and [it's] just a matter of time before I turn things around." The 38-year-old remains the closer in St. Louis for the time being so as long as he can get back on track, he will remain a low-end Fantasy RP option in deeper mixed leagues.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin entered Thursday's game against the Dodgers in the ninth inning with a five-run lead. After retiring the leadoff batter, the right-hander surrendered a solo shot to Matt Kemp. He was able to regain his composure, though, as he got the next two hitters to harmlessly groundout to end the game. Franklin lowered his ERA from 9.82 to 9.64 in the 9-5 win.
Analysis: Franklin has looked rusty early on this season as he has given up five earned runs, including two homers, in 4 2/3 innings while going just 1 for 4 in save chances. The Cardinals are sticking with him as the closer for the time being but one has to wonder how short his leash will be. The 38-year-old has posted 30-plus saves only one time in his career but has plenty of time to turn things around. Continue to view Franklin as a low-end Fantasy RP in deeper mixed leagues while he is struggling.
News: The Cardinals don't have a closer controversy. Manager Tony La Russa and GM John Mozeliak wanted to make that perfectly clear before Sunday's series finale against the Giants after closer Ryan Franklin blew his third save of the season Saturday. "Closing is about confidence and feeling good about what he's doing," Mozeliak said. "I still think he has the stuff to get people out. At this point I'm not [thinking about a change]. We could go in a different direction. But right now we feel he's the best option we have." The other options include Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte, but La Russa said neither guy is ready to close games. "The fact is right now those young guys aren't better," La Russa said.
Analysis: This is clearly a disappointing start for a player that said in the preseason he wants to postpone retirement and return in 2012. Franklin, who got Sunday off, still has plenty of time to right the ship, but his shaky start does put him on notice. He'll keep his closer's role, so continue to keep Franklin active in deep Fantasy formats heading into Week 2 (April 11-17). A guy with regular save chances is still a viable option despite a rocky start.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin entered Saturday's game against the Giants in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He allowed a one-out single to Buster Posey and walked the next batter before retiring Aaron Rowand for the second out. But Miguel Tejada hit a ball deep to center field the very next at-bat that Colby Rasmus couldn't come up with, allowing the game-winning run to score from first base. Franklin has blown three saves so far this season. "I'm just having a rough time right now. I'm doing everything I think I can," Franklin said. "I threw some pitches in and some pitches out and I tried to throw the fastball in and it wasn't where I wanted it."
Analysis: Franklin has gone just 1 for 4 in saves chances so far this season and has a 9.82 ERA. While Saturday's blown save was not entirely his fault, he did put the runners on base and allowed Tejada to hit it a long way. The 38-year-old contemplated retirement after last season and might have been better off doing so. Still, it's very early in the season and Franklin can right the ship at any point but Fantasy owners in mixed leagues might want to go with more reliable options for Fantasy Week 2 (April 11-17).
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin blew his second save of the young season on Friday afternoon against the Giants. After his team took the lead in the top-half of the ninth, the right-hander retired the first two batters before giving up a single to Aaron Rowand. Rowand advanced to second on a wild pitch and Franklin walked Buster Posey to put runners on at first and second. Then Pablo Sandoval hit an RBI single to tie the game.
Analysis: Franklin has not looked sharp early on as he has converted just 1 of 3 saves while posting a 6.00 ERA in three appearances. He blew just two saves all of last season so hopefully he will be able to rebound quickly. The 38-year-old should see a ton of save opportunities in St. Louis this season so despite his shaky start, continue to view Franklin as a viable Fantasy RP in most mixed leagues.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin picked up his first save on Tuesday night in a win over the Pirates. Franklin gave up a hit in the ninth inning, but also struck out two and did not give up a run. He threw 16 pitches and his ERA lowered to 4.50. "I really wanted to get that first one," Franklin said. "I felt like I was locked in, concentrating on everything and taking a little more time than maybe I usually do just because I was grinding. It felt real good to get it out of the way."
Analysis: Franklin allowed a solo homer in his first appearance of the season as he blew a save against the Padres. He was better this time around. There will be plenty of saves to come for Franklin, who remains a solid start in all mixed Fantasy leagues.
News: With a 3-2 lead and two outs in the top of the ninth, Ryan Franklin appeared to be cruising towards his first save of the 2011 season on Thursday. Instead, Padres OF Cameron Maybin took a Franklin curveball over the center field wall to eventually send the game into extra innings. San Diego prevailed in the season opener for both teams, 5-3, in 11 innings. "A guy like him, he definitely likes to get ahead," Maybin said of Franklin. "It was probably his version of a get-me-over pitch." Franklin did not walk or strike out any batters, and he did not give up any other base hits, though he did hit Padres C Nick Hundley with a pitch.
Analysis: Franklin blew only two out of 29 save chances last year, and even without Thursday's blown save, he'd be unlikely to repeat such a high conversion rate. Franklin's lack of strikeouts makes him a midrange option among Fantasy closers in standard mixed leagues, but barring an extended stretch of blown saves, he will have job security.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin let a 5-3 lead slip away on him on Saturday against Florida. He gave up a leadoff double to Greg Dobbs before getting the next two batters out. Franklin would then give up two more doubles that tied the game. Finally Wes Helms would hit the game-winning single, handing Franklin the loss and sending the Marlins to a 6-5 win. He gave up four hits and struck out just one batter in his 2/3 innings of work. "We've had a couple of bumps with our relievers," manager Tony La Russa told MLB.com. "But pretty much, I think we're going to be in the competition and I don't think you need to say more than that at this point. ... The importance of the bullpen in today's baseball is part of how you're going to be really good. So we've only got a little fine-tuning as far as what the exact seven guys are, and then it's time to get into the actual competition."
Analysis: Franklin is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA so far this spring. Early during camp Franklin was throwing first-pitch curveballs to try to get ahead of the count. The veteran had been pitching well, but closers will have an occasional bump in the road during the season. In 2010, Franklin posted a 3.46 ERA last year over 59 appearances en route to saving 27 games. He plays for a good team and should be able to post similar numbers to last year. Fantasy owners should continue to view Franklin as a solid No.2 RP in mixed leagues.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin worked on throwing first-pitch curveballs in his outing on Saturday, reports FOXSportsMidwest.com Sunday. Franklin did a decent job doing that and eventually struck out the side in a scoreless frame. That lowered his spring ERA to 1.50. He has allowed just one run over four appearances and six innings. The first-pitch curveballs have been key. "It's real big," Franklin said. "Because they see that and unless they are sitting on it, and hardly anyone sits on first pitch curveball, there just going to take it and that's just an easy pitch to get ahead in the count, instead of having to bear down and throw a fastball on the corner or something."
Analysis: The 38-year-old Franklin has a new trick up his sleeve to get hitters out with this season and thus far it has worked. He had a 3.46 ERA last year over 59 appearances with 27 saves. Franklin is going to continue saving games for the Cardinals and he remains worthy of looks as a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin made his first spring appearance Thursday against the Nationals, allowing three hits over two scoreless innings. Franklin struck out one. Its a start, I felt good, Franklin told FOX Sports Midwest. I got the ball up a couple times in the first inning but like I said, it doesnt matter, Ill load the bases every time with two outs if you get them out. Might not be good for the fans, they might have a heart attack, but I felt good.
Analysis: With the loss of Adam Wainwright for the season, Franklin's Fantasy value takes a slight hit because that's a lot of wins the Cardinals might miss out on with their ace gone. Owners appear to be taking note, as Franklin is only being drafted as the 25th starter on average in mixed leagues so far. St. Louis should win enough to make Franklin a No. 2 option though, so draft him as one.
News: MLB.com reports Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin said he intends to use his changeup more this season.
Analysis: Franklin's ERA rose from 1.92 during an All-Star campaign in 2009 to 3.46 last season. Perhaps he had great success with the changeup in '09 and wants to get back to that level. Franklin shocked people this offseason when he announced that he no longer wants to retire after the 2011 season. From a Fantasy standpoint that is a bonus as Franklin is now in a contract year. The Cards should give him plenty of save chances in 2011, so consider Franklin a No. 2 Fantasy RP on Draft Day.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin has changed his mind. The Cardinals' closer has previously said he would retire following the 2011 season when his current contract expires, but he now wants to pitch beyond this season. "I've done a lot of [thinking about it] this offseason," Franklin told MLB.com. "And I've come to the conclusion that if this year goes well, I'm going to keep playing. If I keep healthy -- which I don't see why I shouldn't -- I don't see any reason why [I couldn't continue]. My family's kind of told me, hey, just keep playing. And I still love to compete, man. That's the thing that keeps me going, is the competition. I enjoy the camaraderie that we have in the clubhouse. There's bad stuff, the traveling gets old, and being away from your wife and kids wears on you. But I still love to be out there trying to get guys out and getting guys out."
Analysis: Franklin said he would like to come back to St. Louis next season, but also said he would be open to pitching elsewhere. He also isn't certain if he will be a closer beyond this season. But we will cross that bridge in Fantasy when we get there. Heading into 2011, Franklin is expected to be the Cardinals' closer. Franklin wasn't as dominant in 2010 as he was in 2009, but he will still pitch for a contender this season and that makes him worth drafting as a top 20 Fantasy RP. It also helps now that he wants a new contract, so he will be motivated to have a big season.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a perfect ninth inning on Friday against the Rockies, striking out one, and earning his 27th save of the season. Franklin finished the job SP Jake Westbrook started, closing out the Rockies and securing the 3-0 win.
Analysis: Franklin has a 3.46 ERA and hasn't been stellar this season. Over his last 11 outings in September, Franklin has given up four earned runs. As the season comes to a close Franklin should still be viewed as a No. 2 Fantasy RP option. The veteran has said he'll retire at the end of the 2011 season, but whether he does or not, the fact remains he will pitch in 2011. Fantasy owners should take him as their No. 2 RP option on Draft Day.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin was asked to pitch the final 1 2/3 innings on Sunday against the Cubs. He walked two but pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his 26th save on the year. He did not give up a hit and did not strike out a batter. His ERA is at 3.43.
Analysis: Franklin has allowed three runs in September over nine appearances spanning 10 2/3 innings. He has eight strikeouts and three saves over that span. He has been inconsistent of late but remains worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy RP down the stretch as long as he is closing out games in St. Louis.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Friday afternoon to secure the 7-1 win over the Cubs. He threw 13 pitches and struck out one while making his first appearance since Sunday. Franklin has a 3.52 ERA in 56 appearances this season.
Analysis: Franklin took a personal leave from the team last week and has given up one run in three appearances since then. He is 25 for 27 in save chances this season, way down from the 38 save he recorded a year ago. He has been inconsistent of late but remains worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy RP down the stretch as long as he is closing out games in St. Louis.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin, who hadn't gotten a save opportunity since Sept. 5, pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 25th save Sunday against the Padres. He allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts.
Analysis: Franklin had just returned from a personal leave Friday, allowing an earned run in that lopsided affair. He has been a little inconsistent since the beginning of August, posting a 5.09 ERA in 16 appearances, but with the Cardinals still fighting for a playoff spot, he's worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that closer Ryan Franklin rejoined the Cardinals on Friday after going to Oklahoma on Wednesday to take care of a personal matter. He has converted 24 of 26 save opportunities this season and has a 3.55 ERA.
Analysis: Franklin should be available for the remaining three games of the Cardinals' series with the Padres. He hasn't been as stingy with home runs or with allowing baserunners to score as he was last season, but Franklin is still a reliable option for saves in mixed league formats. The veteran closer said he planned to retire following the 2011 season, but now is reconsidering that decision. He said his final decision will be based on his family, not necessarily his performance on the field.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin returned home to Oklahoma to take care of a personal matter on Wednesday, leaving him unavailable during the current series against the Cubs. He is expected to return at some point during the upcoming four-game series against San Diego beginning on Thursday.
Analysis: Franklin has made five appearances in September and has two saves with two runs allowed and five strikeouts over six innings. The Cardinal closer has 24 saves on the year over 26 chances with a 6-2 record. When closing games for the Cardinals, Franklin can be used in any Fantasy league.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched two scoreless innings on Saturday against the Braves, striking out three batters. He pitched the eighth and ninth innings, but wouldn't get the save or the win. Atlanta would win the game, 6-3, after Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the 12th.
Analysis: This was Franklin's first action since Monday -- an outing where he gave up two earned runs on two hits. That appearance snapped his consecutive scoreless appearance streak of three. While Franklin hasn't been getting many save chances lately -- his last one coming on last Sunday -- he's still a viable Fantasy RP. He's converted 24 of his 26 save opportunities for the Cards this year.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin entered Monday's game against the Brewers in the ninth inning with an 8-4 lead. The right-hander gave up a leadoff double but has able to retire the next two batters to come within one out from ending the game. But Corey Hart had other ideas as he hit a two-run homer off Franklin to cut St. Louis' lead to two. Franklin walked Ryan Braun before finally getting Prince Fielder to ground out to end the game.
Analysis: Franklin's outing on Monday raised his ERA from 3.42 to 3.67 and snapped his consecutive scoreless appearance streak of three. He has given up six earned runs over his last seven innings pitched but has also collected thee saves over that span. Franklin will not match the 38 saves he posted a year ago but remains a viable option in mixed leagues as long as he is closing out games in St. Louis.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin earned his 24th save of the year on Sunday as he shut the door on Cincinnati for a second time in three days. Franklin pitched a perfect ninth inning, lowering his ERA to 3.42. The Cardinals would win the game, 4-2.
Analysis: Franklin's ERA is a bit high for Fantasy owners liking and he doesn't strike many batters out. His 33-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio isn't terrible, but he's pitched in 55 1/3 innings this year. With a 6-2 record and 24 saves in 26 opportunities, Franklin has Fantasy value as a No. 2 RP option.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin entered Friday's game against the Reds in the ninth inning with a 3-2 lead. The right-hander only needed 11 pitches to retire the side in order and struck out one while earning his 23rd save of the year. Franklin lowered his ERA to 3.48 in his 50th appearance of the year.
Analysis: Franklin has pitched two consecutive scoreless outings after giving up runs in back-to-back appearances to end August. He is not having as solid of a season as he did in 2009 but the 37-year-old has blown just two saves on the year. Pitching for a contender like the Cardinals, Franklin is no worse than a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin (neck) was finally back on the mound on Wednesday afternoon against the Astros. Franklin did not pitch in a save situation as the Cardinals lost the game. He gave up a hit in the eighth inning and needed just nine pitches to get three outs. His ERA is at 3.54.
Analysis: Franklin made nine appearances in August and went 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA. He had three saves but one blown contest with seven strikeouts over 9 2/3 innings pitched. Franklin has definitely struggled of late but he's healthy again and has 22 saves on the year for St. Louis. Pitching for a contender like the Cardinals, he's no worse than a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin, who was unavailable to pitch Saturday because of a stiff neck, again wasn't needed Tuesday at Houston in a 3-0 loss. He's considered day to day.
Analysis: Franklin could be available to pitch, but has not been needed for any save situations this week. Though not the prototypical closer, Franklin has proven effective in the role over the last couple years. Pitching for a contender like the Cardinals, he's no worse than a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin, who was unavailable to pitch Saturday because of a stiff neck, again wasn't needed Monday at Houston. He's considered day to day.
Analysis: This injury isn't a big deal. Chances are Franklin would have pitched Monday if the Cardinals had presented him with a save situation. Though not the prototypical closer, Franklin has proven effective in the role over the last couple years. Pitching for a contender like the Cardinals, he's no worse than a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin did not pitch in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Nationals. Manager Tony La Russa said Franklin was not available to pitch Saturday after he woke up with a stiff neck. He is listed as day to day.
Analysis: Franklin didn't pitch Sunday, but he wasn't needed in the 4-2 loss. He should be fine moving forward and should be active for Fantasy Week 22 (Aug.30-Sept-5). The 37-year-old has given up a combined three runs over his past three innings pitched while going 1 for 2 in save chances. He followed up his 5.23 ERA in July by posting a 6.52 mark in August but remains a viable option in mixed leagues as long as he is closing out games in St. Louis.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin was unavailable for Saturday's game against the Nationals after he told MLB.com that he woke up with a stiff neck. "I woke up this morning and can't turn," Franklin said. The right-hander said that the pillows in his hotel room caused his stiff neck. Manager Tony La Russa said that he did not believe the injury would hold his closer out for too long.
Analysis: Franklin would have likely received a day off anyway since he worked the previous two nights but Fantasy owners should continue to monitor his status over the weekend before making any decisions for Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). The 37-year-old has given up a combined three runs over his past three innings pitched while going 1 for 2 in save chances. He followed up his 5.23 ERA in July by posting a 6.52 mark in August but remains a viable option in mixed leagues as long as he is closing out games in St. Louis.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin gave up an earned run to the Nationals on Friday night, but was able to hold on for the 4-2 win, getting his 22nd save of the year. He struck out one and walked one in his inning of work. Washington scored two runs on him in Thursday's game, forcing extra innings.
Analysis: Despite getting the save, Franklin didn't look real good in his second straight game against the Nationals. In three innings of work in this series, Franklin has allowed three earned runs. This was his first save since Aug. 13. Franklin has been getting inconsistent save opportunities, which hurts his Fantasy value. He should be considered a solid No. 2 RP option at this time.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin entered Thursday's game with a 10-8 lead over the Nationals. He gave up a two-run home run to Roger Bernadina, sending the game into extra innings. Washington eventually won the game, 11-10, in 13 innings. He struck out two in his two innings of work.
Analysis: Franklin hasn't earned a save since Aug. 13 and has just two for the entire month. He saw his ERA rise to 3.51after Thursday's outing, which definitely doesn't help his Fantasy value. He has 21 saves on the year, and playing for the Cardinals you'd think he'd get more opportunities. He's given up five home runs this year, the most since 2005 when he was in Seattle. With inconsistent save chances, Franklin should be viewed as a solid No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin allowed one hit and struck out one in his inning of work on Saturday against San Francisco. He pitched in the ninth inning as the Cardinals won, 5-1. This was his second straight non-save appearance. The closer has only pitched twice over the past week.
Analysis: With two appearances and one strikeout for the week, Fantasy owners can't be pleased. He is stuck at 21 saves for the year -- 16 fewer than he had last year. His 6-2 record, 3.28 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings still give him value in most mixed Fantasy leagues as a No. 2 RP.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a perfect ninth inning Wednesday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to the Brewers. It was his first outing since last Friday.
Analysis: Franklin only has a pair of saves over the last three weeks and is stuck at 21 for the moment, which is 16 fewer than he had last season. Franklin isn't an elite Fantasy closer by any means, but he's worth using in mixed leagues as a No. 2 Fantasy RP the rest of the way.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin worked the ninth inning Friday night against the Cubs for his 21st save in 23 chances. He did not allow a baserunner in the inning and recorded his first strikeout in his last three outings. Franklin has not allowed a baserunner in any of those outings.
Analysis: Franklin has righted the ship after blowing just his second save of the season on Aug. 7 against the Marlins. He isn't overpowering like some closers, but he has a fairly established track record now and pitches for a contending team. At worst, he's a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a perfect ninth inning Wednesday in a 6-1 win over the Reds. He got two fly-outs and a ground-out
Analysis: Franklin had a couple of really rough outings earlier this month, so Tony La Russa was probably just trying to get his closer's confidence back a little bit. While he has just one save in the last two weeks, Franklin is a good enough pitcher on a quality team to remain worth using in most Fantasy formats.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin earned his 20th save of the season on Tuesday in a win over the Reds. Manager Tony La Russa needed Franklin to come on and finish up as the Reds began to threaten in the ninth. He needed four pitches to do the job and his ERA is at 3.57.
Analysis: Franklin was coming off his second blown save of the year three days prior against the Marlins in Florida. Still, in his last 10 contests, he has three wins, one loss and four saves. Franklin is pitching for a contender and definitely should be active in most mixed Fantasy leagues.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin had another bad outing on Saturday, this time against the Marlins. Franklin came on to pitch the ninth inning, but allowed a home run to Dan Uggla on the first pitch to tie the game at four. In the 10th inning, Chad Tracy hit a one-out single off Franklin (6-2) before Hanley Ramirez delivered a double to deep right-centerfield. Tracy's head-first slide into home easily beat the throw, giving the Marlins the 5-4 win. "I made three mistakes and they hit all three of them," Franklin said. "That pretty much sums it up."
Analysis: Franklin was charged with his second blown save of the year and has now allowed two earned runs in each of his last two outings. Playing for a contender adds to Franklin's Fantasy value, but if he can't close the door on teams he isn't doing anyone any good. He is still a solid Fantasy closer in mixed leagues, but owners should monitor him heading into Week 19 (Aug. 9-15).
News: Pitching in an 8-2 ballgame on Wednesday against the Astros, Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin gave some runs back. Franklin allowed three base hits and gave up two runs, striking out one batter, and the Cardinals won 8-4. Franklin threw 24 pitches in the inning of work and his ERA is at 3.30.
Analysis: Franklin needed some work and was pitching for the first time in August. Things didn't go so well for him, but at least St. Louis still won the game easily. Prior to allowing the two runs on Wednesday, Franklin had made eight straight scoreless appearances with four saves and three wins among that span. He remains a solid Fantasy closer for all mixed leagues while the Cardinals are in a playoff push.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin earned his third win of July in Friday's 1-0 win over the Pirates. Franklin recorded the final out of the ninth inning and pitched a scoreless tenth to pick up his sixth win of the season. He did not allow a base runner and struck out one while improving to 6-1 on the season.
Analysis: Franklin brought his ERA under 3.00 after Friday's outing and if you take away the one bad outing at Colorado Franklin has been lights out all season. He has recorded three saves and two wins in his last five outings and should be active in all formats.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin recorded one strikeout in a perfect 13th inning to earn his 19th save Wednesday at the Mets. He has now pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings since allowing six earned runs in one-third of an inning July 6 at Colorado.
Analysis: Franklin has a 3.05 ERA on the season. Remove that one ugly outing at Colorado, and it's 1.76. That just goes to show you how much of an aberration that one appearance was and how much you can trust Franklin in Fantasy. He isn't overpowering like some closers, but he has a fairly established track record now and pitches for a contending team. At worst, he's a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: St. Louis RP Ryan Franklin struck out one and allowed two hits over his two innings of work on Sunday against Chicago. Franklin walked away with his fifth win of the year as the Cardinals won the game, 4-3, in 11 innings.
Analysis: Franklin's 3.12 ERA, five wins and 18 saves aren't as good as his 2009 numbers, but he's blown just one save so far this year. He also has just six walks on the year, which is great. The Cards are one of the best teams in baseball and Franklin's save chances will come. Continue to use him in most mixed Fantasy leagues as he is still a solid option.
News: St. Louis RP Ryan Franklin got Jayson Werth out on a groundout with two on to end the eighth inning and didn't allow a baserunner in the ninth to earn his 18th save on Wednesday. The Cards beat the Phillies, 5-1. He lowered his ERA to 3.29 with this outing, notching his third save in July.
Analysis: In seven appearances in July, Franklin is 1-1 with three saves. He hasn't allowed an earned run since his loss, where he gave up six on six hits in 1/3 of an inning. He doesn't strikeout a lot of batters (22), but Franklin is consistent -- converting 18 of 19 save opportunities -- and plays for one of the best teams in the majors. Despite this lull in his production, Fantasy owners should continue to roll with him as he remains a solid option in mixed leagues.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Sunday against the Dodgers and was rewarded with the win when Matt Holliday hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the inning in the 5-4 victory. Franklin struck out one, allowed a hit and intentionally walked a batter while lowering his ERA to 3.41.
Analysis: Franklin is 17 for 18 in save chances this season and has not given up a run since allowing six on July 6. The right-hander saved 38 games a year ago and would have to go on a torrid stretch to match that feat again. Despite his recent bump in the road, Franklin has had a good season and remains a solid option in mixed leagues with his 22 strikeouts and five walks.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin recorded the final out in Saturday's 2-0 win against the Dodgers, earning his 17th save of the season. He entered the game with a runner on first and two outs in the ninth inning. Franklin has converted 17 of 18 save opportunities.
Analysis: Franklin had a meltdown on July 6 against the Rockies, but has otherwise been untouchable since late June. He should get plenty more save chances in the second half of the season for the contending Cardinals, so Franklin should remain active in all formats.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's 8-4 win over the Dodgers. Franklin allowed a hit and struck out one while throwing 16 pitches.
Analysis: Take away Franklin's one bad outing against the Rockies and he has been lights out this season. He is 16 for 17 in save opportunities and has a 21-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He should get more save chances in the second half of the season for the contending Cardinals, so Franklin should remain active in all formats.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 16th save in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Astros. Franklin allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout while only throwing eight pitches. Franklin is now 16 for 17 in save opportunities this season.
Analysis: Things certainly went a lot smoother for Franklin on Sunday than they did on when he allowed six runs on Tuesday. Other than that one bad outing, Franklin has been terrific in the closer role this season. He has only blown one save all year and has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 20-to-5. He should get more save chances in the second half of the season for the contending Cardinals, so Franklin should remain active in all formats.
News:Seth Smith's three-run homer off closer Ryan Franklin with two outs in the ninth capped a nine-run rally as the Colorado Rockies stunned the St. Louis Cardinals 12-9 on Tuesday night. It was the largest ninth-inning comeback in Rockies' history. The previous best was four runs. Chris Iannetta hit a three-run homer off Franklin (3-1), who allowed six runs and six hits while retiring just one batter. Franklin took the loss and needed 28 pitches to get just the one out. His ERA blew up to 3.74 after the loss. "We played our butts off for nine innings and I didn't get the last out. I feel bad for everyone in here who battled hard for three hours," Franklin said.
Analysis: Franklin allowed more runs on Tuesday than in the last two months of the season combined. That should tell you we believe this crazy outing was just an aberration and not a sign of things to come. Franklin has 15 saves and had a 2.16 ERA entering Tuesday's meltdown. Don't worry too much about this outing and continue rolling with Franklin in most mixed Fantasy leagues.
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Ryan Franklin, who made his first All-Star team last year at age 36, was philosophic after not being selected to the squad this year despite his 15 saves in only 16 opportunities. Franklin said, "I don't think the (save) opportunities were there. That's one thing that ... you can't control much."
Analysis: Franklin should see plenty of save opportunities in the second half for the contending Cardinals. Things like save chances tend to level out before the end of the season. The Cardinals should have a healthier and deeper rotation in the second half, too. Consider Franklin good enough of a closer to be viable in all Fantasy leagues through thick and thin.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin gave up a pair of hits in a non-save opportunity during Friday's win over the Brewers. He entered the game in the top of the ninth with St. Louis up 5-0. He allowed a pair of one-out singles before retiring the final two batters to end the game. Franklin has given up a hit in each of his last four appearances, and six of his last seven.
Analysis: Pitching for a 44-win team, 15 saves seems low for Franklin. But he's only blown one save this season; he's just not been given the opportunities. However, his ERA and WHIP are good so he remains a viable Fantasy option in two-reliever leagues.

News: Although Ryan Franklin didn't pitch on Tuesday against the Blue Jays, he was available out of the bullpen, reports MLB.com. Franklin hasn't pitched since Saturday against the A's as he has been battling a minor head cold.
Analysis: Franklin said Monday that he is likely to retire following the 2011 season, but that is not of concern right now. He seems to be back at 100 percent after dealing with a minor cold and continues to dominate in the closer's role for St. Louis. He did struggling on Saturday against Oakland, but he is still 3-0 and has only one blown save in 2010. Franklin remains a high-end Fantasy RP.
News: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin will retire at the end of the 2011 season. "I think I owe it to my family," Franklin said. "I've missed a lot of things that have been going on. I don't want to miss a lot more." Franklin, who has been fighting a sinus infection over the last couple of days, has 13 saves and a 2.40 ERA in 27 games this season.
Analysis: Franklin did go on to say that "someone is going to have to throw some serious money at me" to convince him to keep pitching after 2011, so he didn't close every door. Franklin had a rough outing on Saturday against the A's, but has been pretty good this year. His 13 saves and that fact he plays for a contender makes him a must-start Fantasy RP.

Analysis: Franklin had a rough outing on Saturday against the A's, but his 2.40 ERA and 13 saves are respectable, if not great, totals on the season. While he might be putting up just No. 2 Fantasy RP numbers, he remains worth using in the majority of formats.

The right-hander recorded the final two outs in the eight before starting a shaky ninth. But he was able to get Ryan Roberts to fly out to end the game and secure the 5-2 win. Franklin picked up his 11th save in 12 chances and has a 1.61 ERA on the year.
Analysis: Franklin has not allowed an earned run in his last nine outings and has 18 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched. He also only has three walks in 24 outings. Fantasy owners should continue to use Franklin as a high-end Fantasy closer for his ability to close out games for a contender.

News:The Sports Xchange reports Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin has walked just one batter in a regular-season game since Oct. 3 of last year. He has fanned 13 and, with 10 saves in 11 tries this season, hardly has been the question mark he was perceived to be in the offseason and through much of a poor spring.

Franklin hasn't allowed a run in seven innings over his last five appearances.
Analysis: Franklin is enjoying a fine month during May. He's given up only one run in 12 1/3 innings over 10 appearances, winning three games and saving three more. He doesn't strike out a lot of batters, but that's the only flaw in his Fantasy value. He remains a must-start reliever.

Fortunately for him, his team rallied late and scored on a walk-ff hit to win the game 6-5 and give Franklin his third win on the year. Franklin is 10 for 11 in save opportunities this season.
Analysis: Solid two innings out of Franklin on Sunday and the right-hander has now pitched four straight scoreless outings. Franklin had a shaky night on Friday, but it didn't seem to phase him. "I wasn't rattled," he said. "I was confident. The way it arrived was, a groundball, a broken bat for a base hit, and a groundball that just wasn't hit hard enough.

Reyes recorded a RBI groundout before Luis Castillo grounded out to short to end the game. St. Louis won 4-3.
Analysis: Franklin had allowed only one hit and no runs in his previous three save chances, so it's not like he has struggled much with the game on the line. Franklin has had a few ugly outings in 2010, but he is not blowing saves and will continue to keep his closer's job for the contending Cardinals. Keep Franklin active in all Fantasy formats.

News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin, who allowed five earned runs in his first three appearances this spring, has now pitched three straight scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. His ERA is 6.14.
Analysis: Franklin's spring performance is of interest to Fantasy owners because he collapsed with a 6.75 ERA last September and October after dominating much of the season. As the closer for an expected contender, he's still worth drafting as a No. 2 Fantasy RP, but considering he's already 37 years old, you have to wonder how much of last season's performance was smoke and mirrors.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin, who posted a 7.56 ERA in his final nine appearances last season after dominating most of the way, isn't sweating it too much, according to MLB.com. Neither are the Cardinals. "Being able to perform at the level that he did [in '09], that's unreasonable to expect that this year," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "But the reason we're confident in him is he understands how to pitch, he understands how to prepare, he's smart, he's studied, and all those things will contribute to allow Franklin to pitch well. I think the key is that he has to be someone who can stay sharp. ... And I look at him, how he showed up in camp -- he's in great shape, he's very confident about this year -- and I think those are all important factors."
Analysis: Franklin doesn't have overpowering stuff, is almost 37, and has talked about retiring in a couple years. But as long as he's closing for the contending Cardinals, he has a chance for 35-plus saves. He might not be as good as he was last year, but he'll surely be better than he was in September. Draft him as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy RP.
News:Ryan Franklin was one of the National League's top closers last year, even with an awful final month, a first-time All-Star for St. Louis whose ERA hovered around one until early September. The Cardinals have faith that a pitcher who'll be 37 next month and isn't a strikeout machine can do the job again, enough that they're not trying to develop a backup this spring. "It doesn't matter to me," Franklin said Saturday. "I've got a couple of years, maybe three years left, and I want to win. Whatever that takes, whatever they think, is totally fine with me as long as I'm a part of it." Among the potential fill-ins are Jason Motte, who began last year as the closer, and Mitchell Boggs. Both throw in the high 90s, more of a typical closer template than Franklin, who is a ground-ball pitcher. "You always want a succession plan, and if something doesn't work you want to look for something internally first," general manager John Mozeliak said. "It's just natural."
Analysis: Even with three blown saves in six September chances, Franklin was 38 for 43 with a run of 13 straight ending in early September, and a still very impressive 1.92 ERA overall. Franklin had a 0.79 ERA prior to the All-Star break to finish with a 3.33 ERA post-break. He really got lit up after September, posting a 7.56 ERA in his final nine appearances and blowing three saves in that span. No one is really pushing Franklin for the job to open the season, so he shouldn't feel any pressure there. He is still the closer for a top contender, so treat Franklin as a viable No. 1 Fantasy RP.

Analysis: Apart from that blown save, Franklin hasn't allowed a single earned run this season. The 36-year-old didn't begin the season as the closer, but he's thriving in the role now. Don't even think about benching him in Fantasy, especially with the Cardinals playing good baseball.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin gave up solo home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to Jerry Hairston and Micah Owings on Sunday to tie the game at seven and end his run of perfection on the year. Franklin (1-0) had converted all nine save chances and hadn't allowed a run all season. Franklin regrouped, however, and finished his inning. The Cardinals won the game in the 10th and he was awarded the victory. His final line was 1 1/3 innings pitched allowing three hits, two runs and a walk. He struck out two. His ERA is now 1.23 on the year.
Analysis: Even when Franklin implodes, he still strikes out two and gets the victory. He was perfection before Sunday and one poor outing won't change the fact that he's become a No. 1 Fantasy closer.
News:Ryan Franklin worked the ninth inning Thursday against Pittsburgh for his ninth save in nine chances, and has not allowed a run in 13 1/3 innings this season. He did not allow a baserunner in Thursday's outing and struck out a batter.
Analysis: Franklin has been absolutely dominant since inheriting the closer job and he is not likely to lose his grip on the job anytime soon. He's looking like one of the most solid closers in baseball and is making Cardinals fans forget that Jason Motte was ever their closer this season. Start him in any league that rewards saves right now.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin notched his eighth save on Wednesday in a win over the Pirates. Franklin pitched a perfect ninth and did not strike out a batter. He still has a perfect ERA on the season.
Analysis: Franklin has eight saves for the Cardinals, who keep on giving him opportunities. He's been absolutely lights out and should be active in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin saw an inning of work in a non-save situation on Monday against the Phillies. Franklin threw a perfect inning and struck out a batter. His ERA is still perfect at 0.00.
Analysis: Franklin has now opened the season with 11 1/3 scoreless innings with seven saves. He's looking like one of the most solid closers in baseball and is making Cardinals fans forget that Jason Motte was ever their closer this season.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin earned his seventh save on Wednesday in a win over the Braves. Franklin was asked to go 1 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit over the scoreless appearance. He's still yet to allow a single run this season.
Analysis: At this point, it seems almost comical that the Cardinals began the season with Jason Motte as their closer. Franklin is the man for the job and barring a meltdown it'll likely stay that way. He's a must-start option the way the Cardinals are playing.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save Monday at Atlanta, recording one strikeout. He has yet to allow an earned run in nine innings this season.
Analysis: Franklin didn't open the season as the Cardinals closer and didn't get his first save until April 13. He has a firm grasp on the role now, though, and could rack up plenty of saves for what looks like one of the best teams in baseball. He now deserves to start as a No. 2 Fantasy RP in all leagues that reward saves.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin worked around a two-out walk to pinch hitter Milton Bradley in the ninth for his fifth save in five chances as St. Louis beat Chicago 4-3 Friday. Franklin struck out the first two batters he faced before Bradley's walk and ended the game on a Ryan Theriot line out. Franklin has all five saves in his last six outings since April 13.
Analysis: After Jason Motte failed miserably as the closer to begin the season, Franklin has been able to step in and provide stability at the back-end of the bullpen. He hasn't allowed a run in eight innings and has developed into a viable Fantasy RP.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin needed only three pitches to earn his fourth save of the 2009 season. Franklin got pinch-hitter Gary Sheffield to pop up with a runner on second to end the game.
Analysis: Franklin has been outstanding in the closer's role so far this season, converting all four of his opportunities. He is yet to allow a run this season in seven innings of work, allowing only three hits and walking one. His Fantasy stock is rising tremendously and he can be started as a No. 1 closer.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin shut the door on the New York Mets Tuesday for his third save of the season. Franklin pitched a perfect ninth inning and added a strikeout. He has yet to allow a run this season.
Analysis: Franklin has three saves and a hold this season and has yet to allow a run in 6 2/3 innings. He's only allowed three hits and has six K's. He's pitching well as the St. Louis closer and it doesn't look like he's going to relinquish the job anytime soon. He can be starting in all Fantasy formats right now.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin came on in a non-save situation Saturday against the Cubs. Franklin entered in the 8th inning in a tie ballgame and pitched two full innings for St. Louis. He allowed two hits and walked one but didn't allow a run. He had a strikeout and still has a 0.00 ERA on the season over his first 5 2/3 innings.
Analysis: Franklin has two saves on the year since taking over for Jason Motte as the team's closer. The Cardinals will continue to win so Franklin should definitely be considered a valuable closer for most mixed Fantasy leagues as long as he's pitching well.
News: St. Louis RP Ryan Franklin recorded his second save of the 2009 season on Thursday against the Cubs. He worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out two batters in the process.
Analysis: Franklin has worked 3 2/3 innings in four appearances this season and has allowed only one hit with four strikeouts. He has assumed the role of the Cardinals' closer at the moment. Jason Motte struggled as the team's closer to open the season but is probably the pitcher manager Tony La Russa wants in the long-term. He can be used as a decent closer option in mixed leagues and can be snagged off of most waiver wires as he is owned in only 36 percent of leagues.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin, who led the team with 17 saves last season, pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save Monday at Arizona. He allowed one hit. Kyle McClellan and Dennys Reyes, who have both earned saves this season, both recorded holds in the eighth inning. Jason Motte, who began the season as the closer, didn't make an appearance.
Analysis: Motte has overpowering stuff, and manager Tony La Russa seems to prefer him long term, but he has struggled too much so far for the Cardinals to keep going back to him. It's only natural for the Cardinals to turn to Franklin, given his experience and relative success in the role last season. He seems the likely favorite for saves, if only for now. Go ahead and add him if you have a need for a closer in mixed leagues, especially since he pitches for a contender. McClellan and Reyes are likely just middle relievers going forward.
News: Rookie reliever Jason Motte botched his first chance as the St. Louis Cardinals' closer. Because he threw so many pitches, it was likely he'd have to wait at least a day before getting another shot at making a better impression. Ryan Franklin, who had 17 saves last year while the Cardinals struggled to find a replacement for Jason Isringhausen, was the likely choice to close Tuesday.
Analysis: Motte won a three-man competition for the job in spring training. But he allowed four runs in the ninth inning of Pittsburgh's 6-4 opening-day victory Monday. Plus, he threw 29 pitches. So before the second game of a four-game series Tuesday, manager Tony La Russa planned to give the hard-throwing right-hander a day off. It doesn't sound as though La Russa is ready to give up on Motte as the closer, but it does seem the reliever is on a short leash. Franklin is now a player to consider picking up as he could replace Motte in the closer's role, if Motte continues to struggle.
News: St. Louis RP Jason Motte failed to convert a save opportunity in Monday's opening day game against the Pirates. Motte allowed a double to Jack Wilson with a one-run lead and the bases loaded with all three base runners scoring. Motte was given the first chance to close for the Cardinals but the Cardinals may now look to Ryan Franklin after this performance.
Analysis: Motte was the dark horse candidate to win the closer's job before spring training but blew away the competition in the spring. Manager Tony La Russa gave Motte the first crack at earning the closer's role, something that clearly didn't pan out well for Motte in his first opportunity. Franklin is now a player to consider picking up as he could replace Motte in the closer's role.

News: With the Chris Perez's demotion to Triple-A Memphis on Monday, Jason Motte will get first crack at saving games, though manager Tony La Russa will probably give opportunities to other relievers as well. Most likely, that "other reliever" is Ryan Franklin, who saved 17 games last year and has a 5.23 ERA this spring.
Analysis: We think Motte unofficially has the job at this point, but La Russa has a history of getting creative with his bullpen. Franklin still deserves a roster spot in deeper Rotisserie leagues, mostly just NL-only formats, for his potential to steal a few saves away from Motte.
News: According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals do not plan on naming a closer before they break spring camp, but that doesn't mean they'll go north without having one. The Cardinals plan on using the rest of spring camp to build the bullpen and have some options for the closer's role. However, Jason Motte has been getting many save opportunities and has separated himself a bit from the other candidates Chris Perez and Ryan Franklin. "Even if we, in our minds, have that person designated, I don't think we're going to publicly say that, and I don't think we're going to tell the individual," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "Let him establish himself. We'll create the situation for him to pitch, and if he establishes himself then he will (close). If he doesn't, then he won't."
Analysis: Right now, Motte is thought of as the pitcher that is going to end up getting the majority of the save opportunities in the beginning of the season for the Cardinals. However, that doesn't mean that Franklin and Perez can't still win the job instead. Motte can only be thought of as a low-end Fantasy closer provided he does get the bulk of the save opportunities. The same goes for Franklin if he somehow gets the job while Chris Perez is struggling to make the team.

News: St. Louis RP Ryan Franklin allowed a two-run home run to Pat Burrell in Thursday's exhibition game against the Rays. Franklin allowed three total hits in the inning, striking out a batter. His spring ERA jumped up to 3.86 after giving up the two runs.
Analysis: Franklin is entrenched in a battle for the closer's position with Chris Perez and Jason Motte. Motte is likely out of the picture, so it's just Franklin and Perez really battling it out. Franklin didn't exactly help his cause today but we still think he'll end up starting the season as the closer. However, Chris Perez will likey take over that role at some point this season, probably sooner than later.
News: Tony La Russa could go with one of the fireballing kids: Chris Perez or Jason Motte. Or there is veteran Ryan Franklin, who had 17 saves in 25 chances last year when he took over from Jason Isringhausen. "I think we're all getting a little tired of people asking who's the closer," Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said. "We've been pretty upfront that we're going to use these three weeks." Franklin believes La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan know who they want. Three weeks before the start of the season, La Russa isn't tipping his hand. "You just see how they pitch and the impression they give you, and if one guy emerges he becomes the closer," La Russa said. "If he doesn't, they all kind of share it." Motte just wants to make the team right now. "Hopefully I'll make the team, that's my main objective right now," Motte said. "I'm not trying to be the closer, trying to be this, trying to be that. It doesn't matter if I pitch the sixth or the ninth."
Analysis: Perez, who had seven saves in 11 opportunities last year, realizes La Russa withheld that title while also trying to withhold some of the pressure that comes with it. He also realizes it's a mind game. The 26-year-old Motte throws harder than Perez, in the high 90s, and struck out 110 in 66 2/3 innings at Triple-A Memphis last year. He also had a 0.82 ERA with a save in 12 appearances with St. Louis. If not this year, La Russa believes both Perez and Motte have the stuff and the makeup to be full-time closers. The 36-year-old Franklin throws about 92-93 mph, but has an array of pitches: three fastballs, a curveball, a slider and a splitter. We think Franklin will open the season as the closer, but Perez will take over in short order -- once he proved effective and dominant in the setup role. Motte is a real longshot right now.
News: St. Louis RP Ryan Franklin pitched two scoreless innings against the Dominican Republic WBC team on Thursday. He struck out one and went unblemished through his two innings of work.
Analysis: Chris Perez has been said to be the leading contender for the closer's role in St. Louis but Jason Motte and Ryan Franklin are also in the mix. Perez was the closer for most of the second half of last season, but Franklin did get a few looks in the role. Watch all three pitchers vying for the role with interest, but if you have to pick a Cardinals closer right now, it would be Perez. Franklin will set up with occasional saves, while Motte might get a look down the road if one or both falter.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin pitched three shutout innings on Saturday in an exhibition game against the Nationals. He allowed only one hit and struck out five batters in total.
Analysis: Franklin is entrenched in a battle with second-year pitcher Chris Perez and Jason Motte for the closing role in St. Louis.
News: A major question for the Cardinals, a fourth-place team in the NL Central last year at 86-76, is anointing a closer. Manager Tony La Russa leaned on rookie Chris Perez the second half of last season after yanking Jason Isringhausen for a second time, and Perez enters the spring as the favorite after the Cardinals failed to land a proven ninth-inning specialist in the offseason. The situation at both closer and second base reflect the organization's decision to promote from within rather than through free agency, although the Cardinals were serious bidders for Brian Fuentes, who chose a lesser deal to play on the West Coast with the Angels. "The only way to get him was to overpay, and we weren't going to do that," La Russa said. Ryan Franklin and Jason Motte are in the mix.
Analysis: Franklin is the veteran and La Russa had said, "The smartest thing would be to get somebody that we can mix in there and take a little pressure off the young guys." That would be Franklin, perhaps. Perez probably has the best stuff right now, while Motte throws hard and is a sleeper this spring. Watch all three, but if you have to pick a Cardinals closer right now, it would be Perez. Franklin will set up with occasional saves, while Motte might get a look down the road if one or both falter.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin, who served as closer much of the season, pitched a scoreless seventh inning Sunday against the Reds. He blew his eighth save Friday, allowing two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Analysis: Franklin was more a closer by default than by ability and likely won't enter 2009 with the role. Even if he does, think of him as no more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin blew his eighth save of the season Friday against the Reds, allowing two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. He ended up getting the win, though, upping his record to 6-6.
Analysis: Franklin is more a closer by default than by ability and likely won't enter 2009 with the role. Even if he does, think of him as no more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin pitched the ninth Wednesday against the Diamondbacks for his 17th save in 24 chances. He allowed one hit in a scoreless inning.
Analysis: The Cardinals pretty much close by committee and have been officially eliminated from the playoff race. For that reason, think of Franklin only as a middle-relief option who gets the occasional save.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin retired the last four outs on Tuesday against the Diamondbacks for his 16th save in 23 chances.
Analysis: The Cardinals pretty much close by committee and have been officially eliminated from the playoff race. For that reason, think of Franklin only as a middle-relief option who gets the occasional save.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin got the final two outs to record his 15th save on Saturday against the Marlins.
Analysis: Franklin got the save opportunity most likely because Chris Perez had worked in three of the last four games and hadn't been sharp in those outings. If Perez was just given a breather and he remains the closer, Franklin is still just a middle-relief option who gets the occasional save. If Perez was demoted, Franklin becomes more valuable. Check back to see the answer to this situation. But Franklin isn't worth starting in Fantasy Week 24 (Sept. 8-14) just yet.
News: After the bullpen's latest struggles, the St. Louis Cardinals have decided to go to a closer by committee. Closer Jason Isringhausen, who has a 1-5 record, 6.28 ERA and seven blown saves in 19 chances, remained a member of the bullpen although the role was not clear. La Russa said he thought Isringhausen, who was 32-for-34 last year in saves, can still be valuable in the bullpen. "Oh yeah, I definitely do," the manager said. "I think he's got a lot he can offer us." But he conceded Isringhausen's latest outing has shaken the closer, who has 293 career saves.
Analysis: The Cardinals called up RHP Chris Perez and have Ryan Franklin and Kyle McClellan, who should team up to be a four-headed closer over the coming weeks. Adam Wainwright could also come back and close some games. This obviously severely lowers Izzy's Fantasy value and he's now mostly an NL-only middle-relief option with the upside to regain the closers job in the future. Perez, McClellan -- who is a sleeper candidate and someone to consider in keeper leagues -- and Franklin's value should go up slightly, but you'll never know when any of them will be the one to close, so you can't rely on any of them in Fantasy unless one distances himself.
News:Jason Isringhausen has been reinstalled as the Cardinals closer. Ryan Franklin will be a setup man again.
Analysis: Franklin has blown three consecutive games, but still isn't pitching all that poorly. Regardless, no saves means little value for the middle reliever right now.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin couldn't nail down the game for the Cardinals on Saturday vs. the Mets and as such, the Cardinals won in 14 innings. He surrendered a leadoff homer to Fernando Tatis in the ninth inning. Rick Ankiel leaped for it at the wall and crashed to the warning track, and for a moment the entire stadium wondered whether he had caught it. Ankiel stood up and slapped his empty glove in frustration, and Tatis finished rounding the bases to tie it at 8. It was the fifth homer Franklin has allowed in his last nine outings.
Analysis: Franklin has now allowed runs in four of his last five outings with two blown saves in a row. You've got to ask yourself how long manager Tony La Russa will let that continue. The Cardinals remain a contender and that means Franklin is valuable if he stays closer. Check back to see what happens.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin came on Thursday against the Brewers with the Cardinals leading 3-2. Franklin allowed three hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings and blew his fifth save of the year in 19 chances. He did strike out three.
Analysis: Despite Thursday's poor performance, consider Franklin a sleeper in any format where you need a closer, especially since the Cardinals are a contender that will give him a consistent number of save opportunities.
News:Bill Hall homered against Ryan Franklin leading off the 10th inning, helping the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Monday after squandering a ninth-inning lead. The Brewers scored twice more in the 10th off Franklin (3-3) on a throwing error by second baseman Aaron Miles and an RBI single J.J. Hardy. Franklin allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Analysis: Franklin didn't pitch Sunday against the Padres because he needed a day to rest after pitching two innings Saturday. It didn't appear as though the rest helped much Monday, but at least he didn't suffer a blown save. Jason Isringhausen is not ready to close out games for the Cardinals, so Franklin remains the ninth-inning guy. Consider him a sleeper in any format where you need a closer, especially since the Cardinals are a contender that will give him a consistent number of save opportunities.
News: The Padres rallied against Jason Isringhausen, who blew his eighth save in 19 chances Sunday. He was booed by a sellout crowd after allowing three consecutive one-out hits, including an RBI double by Edgar V. Gonzalez. Isringhausen got the shot at his first save since May 5 because replacement closer Ryan Franklin, who is 14-for-18, needed a day off after a two-inning save on Saturday. "No matter how much a veteran he is, he's trying to do more," manager Tony La Russa said. "And today, it was less." Franklin has been far more reliable, with 14 saves in 18 chances and an ability like Isringhausen in his prime to handle the old-style long saves. Last year Franklin was the setup man in his first year with the Cardinals and he's been diplomatic since landing in the closer role, refusing to make waves. "It's totally up to the skipper," Franklin said. "Izzy has 292 saves for a reason, he's good at it, so whatever they decide."
Analysis: Franklin looks like a good bet to remain the Cardinals closer the rest of the season now. Consider him a sleeper in any format where you need a closer, especially since the Cardinals are a contender that will give him a consistent number of save opportunities.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin worked the last two innings Saturday against the Padres for his 14th save in 18 chances. He gave up a hit and a walk and struck out a batter. His ERA now stands at 3.40.
Analysis: Franklin looked like he might lose the closer's job completely to Jason Isringhausen when Izzy came off the DL, but the veteran closer struggled last Saturday. Because of that, manager Tony La Russa has offered two games in a row to Franklin and he's got the job done in both. Franklin could see more saves than we first though in the second half, so treat him like a No. 3 Fantasy closer with upside.
News: St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin notched his 13th save of the season Thursday in the Cardinals opening game of the second half of the season vs. the Padres. Franklin's night was anything but easy, however. He gave up two hits and a run in one inning of work and struck out a batter to earn the save.
Analysis: Franklin looked like he might lose the closer's job completely to Jason Isringhausen when Izzy came off the DL, but the veteran closer struggled on Saturday and Franklin might well get a save or two here and there in the second half. He remains a decent option in NL-only formats.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin allowed one hit and struck out one in one inning of work Sunday as St. Louis held off the Pirates 11-6.
Analysis: Franklin looked like he might lose the closer's job completely to Jason Isringhausen when Izzy came off the DL, but the veteran closer struggled on Saturday and Franklin might well get a save or two here and there in the second half. He remains a decent option in NL-only formats.
News: Cardinals reliever Ryan Franklin picked up his 12th save of the season Tuesday against the Phillies. Franklin, the Cardinals' closer when Jason Isringhausen was injured, gave up one hit in his one inning of work and lowered his ERA to 3.12.
Analysis: Franklin will no longer receive the majority of saves with Isringhausen healthy, though he will be the team's second option. He's picked up three saves in his last eight appearances and is slightly more valuable than a normal NL-only middle reliever because of the occasional save.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin earned the victory Wednesday against the Mets after Troy Glaus hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. Franklin needed 12 pitches to toss a perfect ninth in a 8-7 win. It was his first win since May 17 as he moved to 3-2.
Analysis: Franklin has four blown saves this season and has struggled at times on the hill as the Cardinals' closer. He has allowed a hit in five of his last seven outings and has allowed two runs in that span. Fantasy owners shouldn't count on Franklin remaining the closer beyond the All-Star break now that Jason Isringhausen is healthy, but he's going to remain useful in leagues that reward saves in the short term.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin recorded the final five outs Sunday against the Royals for his 11th save during a 9-6 win. Franklin allowed one hit and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings. It was his third save since June 14.
Analysis: Franklin has four blown saves this season and has struggled at times on the hill. He has allowed a hit in five of his last six outings and has allowed two runs in that span. Fantasy owners shouldn't count on Franklin remaining the closer beyond the All-Star break now that Jason Isringhausen is healthy, but he's going to remain useful in leagues that reward saves in the short term.
News: Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin allowed a one-out, game-tying home run by Tigers hitter Gary Sheffield in the bottom of the ninth Thursday afternoon at Detroit. It was Franklin's fourth blown save of the season.
Analysis: Franklin has filled in for Jason Isringhausen through his struggles and his injury and he remains the closer despite the fact that Isringhausen is healthy and pitching well. Fantasy owners shouldn't count on Franklin remaining the closer beyond the All-Star break, but he's going to remain useful in leagues that reward saves in the short term.
News: With the Cardinals still easing Jason Isringhausen into the closer's role, stand-in Ryan Franklin worked two innings for his 10th save Friday at Boston. He allowed three hits and one run, walking two and striking out one.
Analysis: Franklin has only two saves since June 8 even though he retains ninth-inning duties. The Cardinals don't have a concrete plan for making Isringhausen the closer again, but it should happen sooner rather than later. Franklin retains his Fantasy value while he still earns saves, but he could lose it quickly.
News: Though Jason Isringhausen is off the disabled list and available for St. Louis, stand-in closer Ryan Franklin got three outs for his ninth save in 12 chances Saturday against Philadelphia. Franklin was among the relievers who got smacked around Friday night, allowing two runs and four hits in 1/3 of an inning but pitched a perfect ninth Saturday.
Analysis: If he closes in Fantasy Week 12 (June 16-22), you will want to take a chance on him in any league where you need a closer who will get consistent save chances. Otherwise, Franklin would become nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News:Jason Isringhausen (hand) tossed a pair of scoreless innings Monday night at the start of a Class A rehab assignment. Izzy could be back in the closer's role by the weekend, moving Ryan Franklin back to middle relief.
Analysis: The Cardinals had said Izzy might not need a rehab stint, but he got one anyway. If he closes in Fantasy Week 12 (June 16-22), you will want to take a chance on him in any league where you need a closer who will get consistent save chances. Franklin would then become nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin came in to close for the fourth time in four games Sunday at Houston and logged three strikeouts for the first time since May 23. He was the setup man before Jason Isringhausen went out with a lacerated hand, and fellow RP Russ Springer joked with Franklin after the game that he looks more like a closer every day. "He's full of it," Franklin said with a smile. "He said, 'When you were a setup man, you never struck anybody out. Now, you're closing, you're trying to strike everybody out."'
Analysis: Franklin now has eight saves. He will likely have the closer's job in St. Louis until he proves he can't take the heat anymore (or until Isringhausen returns) and remains a decent stopgap Fantasy option.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin, acting as closer with Jason Isringhausen on the disabled list, pitched a scoreless inning Saturday at Houston, allowing one hit and one walk. He didn't record a save, however, thanks to a four-run lead.
Analysis: Franklin lost in his last appearance Thursday at Washington, allowing two runs without recording an out. He will likely have the closer's job in St. Louis until he proves he can't take the heat anymore (or until Isringhausen returns) and remains a decent stopgap Fantasy option.
News: St. Louis pitcher Ryan Franklin, who took over the closing duties for injured Jason Isringhausen, picked up the loss and his third blown save Thursday against Washington. The Cardinals took a 9-8 lead into the bottom of the 10th inning but Franklin couldn't hold it, giving up two hits and serving up Elijah Dukes' game-winning walk-off home run.
Analysis: Franklin had saved four games in his last four appearances prior to Thursday's meltdown against the Nats, however, he had given up runs in two of those outings. He will likely have the closer's job in St. Louis until he proves he can't take the heat anymore and remains a decent stopgap Fantasy option but owners won't want to see too many more games like Thursday's.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin pitched a perfect ninth inning Thursday in a 4-1 win over the Nationals to record his seventh save of the season.
Analysis: Franklin's ERA is a solid 1.98, and he's making Cardinals fans forget about Jason Isringhausen for the time being. He had given up five hits in his previous three outings, however, so things haven't been completely smooth. He will likely have the closer's job in St. Louis until he proves he can't take the heat anymore and remains a decent stopgap Fantasy option.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin got three outs for his sixth save in eight attempts during a 7-4 win Sunday against the Pirates. Franklin made it exciting as he gave up a single and double with two outs before retiring Doug Mientkiewicz on a fly to left. Franklin had one strikeout whille getting his fourth save since May 23.
Analysis: Franklin has struggled in his last three save attempts. While he has gone 3-for-3, he has allowed two runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Jason Isringhausen is about to come off the DL, but Franklin should remain in the closer's role until the Cards are ready to make Izzy the closer again. Franklin remains a decent stopgap Fantasy option.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin, filling in at closer with Jason Isringhausen on the DL, recorded his fifth save in seven chances Friday against the Pirates. He allowed two hits and one run in one-third of an inning, however.
Analysis: Franklin had gone six appearances (seven innings) without giving up an earned run, so don't worry too much about Friday's. However, the Cardinals talk like Isringhausen could return any day, so don't get too attached to Franklin's save opportunities. He remains a decent stopgap for now.
News: Astros 1B Lance Berkman hit his 17th homer leading off the ninth inning Thursday against Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin to cut the gap to a run before Franklin retired the next three in order for his fourth save in six chances during a 3-2 win. He needed just seven pitches to retire the side after Berkman, including a three-pitch strikeout of Hunter Pence.
Analysis: Franklin has just three saves since taking over the closer's role May 10 from Jason Isringhausen. His scoreless innings streak ended seven when Berkman homered, but he rebound nicely and finished strong. Franklin remains a nice stopgap Fantasy RP while he remains in the closer's role.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin, acting as closer with Jason Isringhausen on the DL, worked around a 65-minute rain delay to notch his third save Friday at the Dodgers. He recorded one out before the rains came, then struggled with two walks upon his return. He didn't allow any runs, though, and ended up striking out the side.
Analysis: Franklin has a 1.50 ERA and should continue to serve as a fine closer until Isringhausen's return. Pick him up as a stopgap in all Fantasy leagues that reward saves.
News:Ryan Franklin (2-1) allowed two walks in two scoreless innings for the win in extra innings against Tampa Bay Saturday.
Analysis: Franklin currently owns the closer role while Jason Isringhausen is sidelined with a hand injury. Chris Perez was also called up from the minors and along with Russ Springer, they could vulture a save or two.
News: The St. Louis Cardinals put struggling closer Jason Isringhausen, who has an 8.00 ERA and six blown saves, on the 15-day disabled list on Friday because of a cut on his pitching hand. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported last weekend that Isringhausen hurt his right hand striking a television set in frustration in manager Tony La Russa's office. Ryan Franklin has been getting the majority of the save chances and should continue to do so while Isringhausen remains sidelined. Russ Springer will also see some save opportunities, but not as many.
Analysis: Isringhausen is still likely to return to the closer role at some point later on in the season, but Franklin will have at least the next two weeks and very possibly the next month or so to establish himself in the closer role. Fantasy owners in NL-only leagues that reward saves should continue to go to him for at least the next couple of weeks.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin, who took over the closer's role Saturday from struggling Jason Isringhausen, got three outs for his third career save and second this year as St. Louis edged the Brewers 5-3.
Analysis: Franklin will split closing duties with Russ Springer, who set him up for the save and got the win Saturday, but you have to think Tony La Russa will go with whoever has the hot hand and give both a chance to win the job full time with equal opportunities over the next couple of weeks. Both Franklin and Springer are worth a flier in NL-only formats, but not in mixed formats until one of them emerges as La Russa's go-to guy.
News: After blowing his major league leading fifth save on Friday night in a 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, Jason Isringhausen will no longer close games, manager Tony La Russa said Saturday. "He's still prepared to pitch important innings, but for a while we'll try to keep him out of the ninth inning," La Russa said. The Cardinals manager said the closing duties will be split between Ryan Franklin and Russ Springer, and that he wouldn't shy from using a left-hander in the role against certain lineups.
Analysis: La Russa told Isringhausen on Saturday that it's no different from when a top hitter is struggling in the lineup. La Russa's only options would be to shuffle the lineup or give a player a few days on the bench. In Isringhausen's case, La Russa wants to keep him active and fresh, but still give him a mental break from the taxing role of being the closer. If you pay close attention to what La Russa said, it appears this may only be a temporary move. That means Franklin and Springer may not be long-term solutions, but they'll be sought after highly off the waiver wire in leagues that reward saves.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin picked up his first save of the season during Tuesday's 6-5 win against the Rockies, but it didn't come easy. After striking out Brad Hawpe, Franklin gave up a two-run double to Chris Iannetta and a run-scoring double to Clint Barmes before getting Jeff Baker to fly out to center. Franklin was only charged with one run since he inherited two runners from Braden Looper.
Analysis: Franklin was on the hill Tuesday in a save situation to give Jason Isringhausen a breather after saving Monday's game against Chicago. Franklin is a solid setup man for the Cardinals and the likely first choice to close out games in the event something happens to Izzy. But until then, he is merely a Fantasy middle reliever for leagues that reward for holds.
News:Ryan Franklin currently leads the majors in holds with 11. Only four other pitchers have as many as nine so far.
Analysis: Franklin is a decent setup man for the Cardinals and closer Jason Isringhausen so consider him in deeper NL-only leagues.
News:Ryan Franklin allowed one earned run on three hits in one inning against Milwaukee Monday, but he was still able to pick up the relief win.
Analysis: Ryan Franklin is a decent setup man for the Cardinals and closer Jason Isringhausen so consider him in deeper NL-only leagues. He currently leads the majors in holds with seven. Only nine other pitchers have as many as five so far.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin's loss Tuesday was his fifth consecutive dating to last season, when he was 0-2 in both August and September.
Analysis: Franklin is a decent setup man for the Cardinals and closer Jason Isringhausen so consider him in deeper NL-only leagues and formats that use true middle men or reward the holds stat.
News: Mike Maroth (0-5) was the 11th pitcher used by the sagging but stubborn Cardinals, an NL record. St. Louis lost for the 12th time in 13 games. The Cardinals also tied an NL record with 28 players used in an extra-inning game. The combined 53 players used by both teams tied the NL mark for an extra-inning game. Tyler Johnson, Kip Wells, Russ Springer, Randy Flores, Ryan Franklin, Jason Isringhausen, Troy Percival, Brian Falkenborg and finally Kelvin Jimenez were all used in relief.
Analysis: Maroth and Wells are displaced starters who might be spot start candidates, but everyone except Izzy and perhaps Percival should be ignored in all Fantasy leagues down the stretch.
News: The Pirates had the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth Tuesday before Ryan Franklin got pinch hitter Nate McLouth on a broken-bat popup to second base. Miguel Cairo spread his legs apart after the catch to avoid the shattered bat, and Franklin worked a perfect ninth for his first career save.
Analysis: Franklin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men. He won't get save chances on a regular basis with Jason Isringhausen and Troy Percival healthy. He only got the save Tuesday because the Cardinals had a four-run lead (a non-save situation to start the ninth).
News: Ryan Zimmerman hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Sunday for their first six-game winning streak in more than a year. With the score 3-3, Nook Logan led off the eighth with a bunt single off Ryan Franklin (4-2). Pinch-hitter Robert Fick sacrificed, D'Angelo Jimenez walked and Logan stole third without a throw. After Ronnie Belliard struck out, Zimmerman took a called strike. swung at the second pitch, then fouled off four straight offerings before lofting a single to short left field. On Friday, Zimmerman hit a game-ending single off Franklin.
Analysis: It was a tough weekend for Franklin, who came in 4-0 but left 4-2. The Nationals just seemed to have his number. Don't worry yet. Franklin has been a solid reliever all season and should rebounded in the coming days. Franklin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: Ryan Franklin worked two hitless innings Saturday and Jason Isringhausen finished for his 20th save in 22 chances.
Analysis: Franklin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men, but he could be a candidate to close if the Cardinals decide to trade their closer before the deadline.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin, who's been successful as their setup man, signed a two-year contract extension on Thursday that includes a team option for 2010. Franklin, who competed for a starting job in spring training, was holding opposing batters to a .212 average. His ERA led NL relievers with 40 or more innings and is third-best in the major leagues.
Analysis: The 34-year-old right-hander was 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 37 appearances entering Thursday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He got the decision in a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Arizona on Wednesday night. Franklin has been one of the best setup men in baseball this season. Consider him a viable middle reliever in leagues that use them.
News: Ryan Franklin picked up the win in relief Wednesday.
Analysis: Franklin has been one of the best setup men in baseball this season. Consider him a viable middle reliever in leagues that use them.
News: The Reds stranded five runners in the seventh and eighth Tuesday against Ryan Franklin (1.40 ERA).
Analysis: Franklin has been a revelation as Jason Isringhausen's setup man. Consider him a solid option as a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men. He might be closer insurance if you have Izzy or expect him to break down again.
News: Manager Tony La Russa hasn't given any thought to putting RHP Ryan Franklin in the starting rotation, not the way he's throwing in middle relief. "When you consider alternatives, his name comes up," La Russa said. "But we quickly go by it. He's an important part of how we win the games late."
Analysis: Kip Wells (2-9) has been terrible in the rotation and Franklin has had some experience in a starting capacity in the past. However, it appears that this is a similar situation to when the Blue Jays needed a starter and didn't use Casey Janssen because he was one of the few pitchers actually doing well so they left that part alone. Franklin's Fantasy value remains limited to deeper NL-only leagues at this time.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin got the last two outs in the eighth inning of Saturday's game against the Nationals, his first appearance in six days. Franklin was at home with strep throat Wednesday and Thursday. He lowered his ERA to 0.92.
Analysis: Franklin has been a solid relief option for the Cards in 2007. It looks as though he have overcome his minor illness and is healthy enough to remain productive. When healthy, he is a solid middle relief option.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin has recovered from a strep throat condition that kept him away from the park for two games. He wasn't used Friday vs. Washington, however.
Analysis: Franklin has been a solid relief option for the Cards in 2007 with a 0.95 ERA through 19 innings. When healthy, he is a solid middle relief option.
News: Ryan Franklin stayed at home for two days and quickly decided that was enough. The Cardinals reliever was back at the ballpark Friday after missing two games with strep throat. Team doctors advised him to wait another day but Franklin insisted on returning to the ballpark. "It was tough sitting at home watching the seventh and eighth inning roll around and knowing it was my time to be out there," Franklin said. "That was tough, man, and I couldn't take it anymore. I guess the doctor will see this anyway but he told me not to show up until Saturday."
Analysis: Franklin wasn't certain if he'd be strong enough to pitch Friday. Strong antibiotics have aided in a quick turnaround. "I didn't know it was that tough on your body," he said. "It's one of those things that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. I'm not 100 percent yet but I will be in a couple of days." Franklin has been a solid relief option for the Cards in 2007 with a 0.95 ERA through 19 innings. When healthy, he is a solid middle relief option.
News: Cardinals RP Ryan Franklin was unavailable for the second straight day Thursday against the Pirates as he deals with a case of strep throat, according to MLB.com. The Cardinals are unsure when Franklin will return to the hill, but they don't intend to make a roster move at this time.
Analysis: Franklin has been a solid relief option for the Cards in 2007 with a 0.95 ERA through 19 innings. He is day to day. When healthy, he is a solid middle relief option.
News: Ryan Franklin, the Cardinals' usual setup man, was at home Wednesday with strep throat.
Analysis: Franklin has been a solid relief option for the Cards in 2007 with a 0.95 ERA through 19 innings. He is day to day. When healthy, he is a solid middle relief option.
News: Cardinals reliever Ryan Franklin has made eight appearances in the month of May, tallying eight scoreless innings.
Analysis: That has lowered his ERA to a microscopic 0.95 on the season, but he still doesn't see enough appearances to warrant a look outside of the deepest NL-only leagues that reward the use of true middle men.
News: Manager Tony La Russa did not consider Franklin for Tuesday's rotation opening, created when Chris Carpenter was scheduled for arthroscopic elbow surgery. Long reliever Brad Thompson got the call, because he's done so well in a setup role.
Analysis: Franklin leads the bullpen with six holds and has a 1.29 ERA over 13 appearances covering 14 innings. "Why would you want to disrupt that?" La Russa said. Thompson has been a starter in the minor leagues and got one spot start last year. Franklin is only worth a look in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle relievers.
News: Ryan Franklin has been working as Jason Isringhausen's setup man in St. Louis. He has a solid 1.64 ERA, but he has pitched only 11 innings this season.
Analysis: Franklin will likely step in as the closer if Izzy's injury history shows its head again. He has four holds on the season so far, which ranks him around 30th in that category. Use him in NL-only play with hopes he gets a relief win or two every now and then.
News: Ryan Franklin (1-0) recorded four outs for the victory as the Cardinals won their fourth in a row and fifth in six games since dropping their first three of the season to the Mets. If it was merely a save opportunity, Franklin would have gotten the nod. Jason Isringhausen was getting a planned day off.
Analysis: Franklin's Fantasy value as a middle reliever has shot up in the season's first couple of weeks. He is a potential flier in deeper leagues that use true middle men. He is the fall-back closer if (when?) something happens to Jason Isringhausen, who has been injury-prone in his career. Franklin could be a candidate to close games down the road for a defending world champion that figures to remain a contender all season.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin, who has seized the eighth-inning role, has retired the first hitter he has faced in all four appearances.
Analysis: Franklin is a potential flier in deeper leagues that use true middle men. He would also be the fall-back closer if (when?) something happens to Jason Isringhausen, who has been injury-prone in his career. Franklin could be a candidate to close games down the road for a defending world champion that figures to remain a contender all season.
News: With Chris Carpenter (elbow) unable to make his previously scheduled start Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, left-hander Randy Keisler was called up from Triple-A Memphis to pitch. "It was his day to pitch. He's got some experience," manager Tony La Russa said. Brad Thompson and Ryan Franklin will remain in relief, while top prospect Blake Hawksworth will remain in Triple-A. Hawksworth originally was tabbed as the Cardinals' "No. 6 starter" this spring.
Analysis: Keisler gave up one run and five hits in five innings in his only start this season for Triple-A Memphis. He was effective during spring training for St. Louis, allowing only an unearned run and three hits over eight innings in four games. Consider Keisler a sleeper for as long as he's getting starts for the offensively potent Cardinals. Thompson and Franklin are nothing more than middle relievers, while Hawksworth is worth a flier for his potential to replace Keisler after this one start Tuesday.
News: RHP Chris Carpenter returned to St. Louis to be examined after his elbow had swelled again. Carpenter had thrown on the sideline Saturday, hoping to pitch Tuesday at Pittsburgh. "No way he pitches Tuesday," manager Tony La Russa said. Carpenter was held out of a weekend start in Houston because of elbow problems he suffered after pitching last Sunday. The Cardinals had tabbed top prospect Blake Hawksworth as their No. 6 starter and he has yet to pitch in Triple-A. He could be called upon if the Cardinals don't choose to do a bullpen game started by Brad Thompson or Ryan Franklin. Also, like Hawksworth, Randy Keisler started on opening day in Triple-A and would be on his regular rest Tuesday.
Analysis: Carpenter likely won't be going on the DL before you roster deadline Fantasy Week 2 (April 9-15), so you won't be able to place there on your roster. You definitely have to reserve him, though. If you're looking for a flier to take if something serious is wrong, it would be Hawksworth. He was once more highly regarded as a prospect (by Baseball America) than Adam Wainwright. Thompson and Franklin are mildly more intriguing middle relievers for deeper NL-only leagues, while the journeyman Keisler would be a stopgap option if he gets the call.
News: Converted closer/reliever Braden Looper has made the opening-day rotation. It will go Chris Carpenter, Kip Wells, Braden Looper, Adam Wainwright and then Anthony Reyes. Ryan Franklin and Brad Thompson, who had been trying to move from relief, will open the year in the bullpen.
Analysis: Looper is a SP sleeper in deeper leagues, especially because the Cardinals are a top contender with a good offense. He will likely hold a rotation spot until Mark Mulder (shoulder) is ready in June. Carpenter is the No. 2 Fantasy Baseball pitcher overall behind Johan Santana, while Wells is an injury-risk sleeper. Wainwright and Reyes are sophomore sleepers with 15-win potential. Franklin and Thompson are nothing more than middle relievers for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: St. Louis agreed to a $1 million, one-year deal with right-hander Ryan Franklin, 34, who pitched for the Phillies and Reds last season and appeared in a career-high 66 games while going 6-7 with a 4.54 ERA in 77 1/3 innings. Franklin could make an additional $1 million in bonuses based on starts, getting the full amount if he makes 29. "Ryan's a durable pitcher who can help us in a number of ways," GM Walt Jocketty said. "We'll bring him to camp and see where he is best suited to help our staff."
Analysis: Franklin started 30 or more games for the Mariners from 2003-05 and topped 200 innings in 2003 and '04, and could fill in as a starter until Mark Mulder (shoulder) returns. The Cardinals are a great team to be getting starts for, especially with pitching coach Dave Duncan's history of reclaiming scrap-heap pitchers (Chris Carpenter and Jeff Suppan). Consider Franklin a sleeper in deeper leagues if it appears like he will win a rotation spot in the Cardinals' wide-open rotation. Carpenter, Kip Wells and Anthony Reyes are the only certainties in front of other candidates Adam Wainwright, Braden Looper, Chris Narveson and Blake Hawksworth.

Analysis: A total of 143 players have filed for free agency, and about 50 more are potentially eligible to file by the Nov. 11 deadline. These players have varying degrees of pertinence in Fantasy leagues, but a lot of it is contingent on their status and roles for 2007. Track their offseason destinations before finalizing a judgment on their Fantasy value.
News: Matt Belisle, making his first start of the season after 28 relief appearances, pitched 3 2/3 innings for the Reds and gave up one run and three hits. "Matt gave us everything he had," manager Jerry Narron said. "He hadn't started a game all year, and he took it to the very limit." Ryan Franklin (6-7) relieved Belisle and worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the victory. Scott Schoeneweis pitched one inning for his third save. Gary Majewski, Todd Coffey and David Weathers also pitched in the game.
Analysis: The Reds have a mess in the closer's role, so consider spot starter Belisle and all of the bullpen arms nothing more than intriguing middle relievers for the deepest of NL-only Rotisserie leagues.
News: Scott Schoeneweis pitched the ninth Sunday for his second save in two opportunities. David Weathers, Rheal Cormier, Bill Bray, Gary Majewski and Ryan Franklin are also in the mix for Reds' saves chances.
Analysis: Schoeneweis is a sleeper in deeper NL-only Rotisserie leagues if you're hurting for saves.
News: Reds closer Eddie Guardado will have ligament-replacement surgery on his left elbow, an operation that usually sidelines pitchers for at least a year. Guardado had been on the DL since Aug. 20 with a sore left forearm, but he thought it was getting better. On Wednesday, an MRI exam revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament, the Reds said. David Weathers, Rheal Cormier, Bill Bray, Gary Majewski, Ryan Franklin and Scott Schoeneweis will be in a bullpen-by-committee situation through the end of the season.
Analysis: Guardado can be dropped in all Fantasy leagues now. His days as a closer are over. For the Reds down the stretch, they will go with the hot hand and there is no specific option we can advise to have as the closer to get in Fantasy.
News: Ryan Franklin (5-7), the eighth Cincinnati pitcher, made only one pitch Tuesday night -- which Ramon Martinez drove over the fence in left-center for his second homer of the season. "I wasn't trying to end it. I just wanted to get on base," Martinez said. "I'm not a home run hitter, so I don't even know what was going through my mind when I hit it. I was just running the bases. It was a long game, but we battled through it."
Analysis: Franklin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues. Ignore him. He stinks.
News: Ryan Franklin (4-6) pitched a perfect eighth to get the win on Monday against Houston.
Analysis: Franklin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: All five Reds starters will go in succession, including stopgap No. 5 Chris Michalak, who is on shaky ground and is nothing more than an emergency option for the deepest of NL-only leagues. "(It's likely to be Michalak) until you hear different," manager Jerry Narron told MLB.com. "As of right now, he's penciled in to go." Paul Wilson (shoulder) is out for the season and Ryan Franklin has yet to be stretched out to be able to start. All of the Reds' No. 5 options are worthless in Fantasy -- that is until Homer Bailey, 20, gets a call-up, if he gets a call-up, in 2006.
Analysis: All of the Reds' No. 5 options are relatively worthless in Fantasy -- that is until Homer Bailey, 20, gets a call-up, if he gets a call-up, in 2006. Consider the Reds' No. 5 starter options only in the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: Chris Duncan, who had three hits in each game of the three-game series, singled off Ryan Franklin (2-6) starting the ninth Thursday and Albert Pujols walked on four pitches. Duncan scored easily on Scott Rolen's single. Franklin said he did his job, inducing ground balls. "It's tough luck, pretty much, is what it is," Franklin said. "But you know, I'm not going to change anything. Probably eight, nine times out of 10, those ground balls will be where they're supposed to be."
Analysis: Franklin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: Ryan Franklin has been mentioned as a possible replacement for the Reds' open No. 5 starter spot, as was journeyman Chris Michalak. The Reds have not ruled out an option from the minors, which is music to the ears of Homer Bailey fans. Bailey, 20 is 5-0 with a 1.03 ERA in Double-A. He struck out 11, walked three and allowed four hits Sunday. The No. 5 spot will come up Friday or Saturday, while Eric Milton will pitch the other day, depending on the new No. 5's day. Bailey would be able to go either of those days. Giddy up!
Analysis: Either one of those stopgaps, Franklin or Michalak, is a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues. Consider the phenomenal Bailey a flier this week for his potential surprising early call-up.
News: Ryan Franklin will work in long relief until Kyle Lohse fails and Franklin is able to get stretched out. "He could do that," Reds GM Wayne Krivsky told the Cincinnati Post. "Kyle Lohse went out and threw five innings (Sunday), and he hasn't been a starter since early in the year. He could probably do it if we got in a jam, but I don't think he's stretched out right now to be a starter."
Analysis: Franklin might be a candidate to serve in a spot starting role down the stretch, but he has spent his season as a reliever and wouldn't be stretched out enough to impact even deeper NL-only leagues. Consider him a low-end middle reliever here on out.
News: Ryan Franklin, acquired from the Phillies earlier in the day for a player to be named, took over for Elizardo Ramirez in the second inning on Monday against St. Louis.
Analysis: He allowed three runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings and will be the Reds' long reliever. Consider him a low-end middle reliever here on out.
News: The Reds acquired right-hander Ryan Franklin from the Phillies for a player to be named Monday. Franklin, 33, had been designated for assignment by the Phillies on July 30 after going 1-5 with a 4.58 ERA in 46 relief appearances.
Analysis: Franklin might be a candidate to serve in a spot starting role down the stretch, but he has spent his season as a reliever and wouldn't be stretched out enough to impact even deeper NL-only leagues. Consider him a low-end middle reliever here on out.
News: Ryan Franklin was designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, ending a disappointing stint where the right-hander never adjusted to his new role in the bullpen. Franklin was 1-5 with 4.58 ERA and had allowed 10 home runs in 53 innings. Franklin pitched all 46 games in relief after spending the last three seasons as a starter with Seattle. "They signed me to be a starter," Franklin said. "I did nothing in spring training to show them I couldn't start. I gave them a lot of innings in spring training."
Analysis: The seven-year veteran started 94 games in his last three seasons with the Mariners, with his best season coming in 2003 when he went 11-13 with a 3.57 ERA. Franklin signed a $2.6 million, one-year contract with the Phillies in January and expected to earn a spot in the rotation. Instead, manager Charlie Manuel surprised Franklin in spring training and put him in the bullpen. Franklin never got comfortable as a reliever and said he wants to go somewhere where he can start. "I think it was the wrong move on their part," Franklin said. "They didn't see it that way."
News: Ryan Franklin (1-4, 4.26) remains stuck in middle relief.
Analysis: The long-time starter hasn't been giving a chance to start in Philly this season and might only out of desperation. Consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever in the deepest of NL-only leagues at this point.
News: Ryan Franklin worked in the middle of a bullpen game Sunday for the Phillies.
Analysis: Franklin, who has a 4.15 ERA, hasn't gotten what he signed for this past winter. He is stuck in middle relief and shouldn't be owned as a Fantasy spot starter at this point.
News: Phillies RHP Ryan Franklin might make a spot start Sunday for the Phillies against Toronto, but he believes he should be given an opportunity to stay in the team's beleaguered rotation. "I think I would be a better starter," Franklin said. "I signed as a starter, and I'd prefer to be a starter. I don't want to come off as selfish. It doesn't bother me (to be a reliever). But I really thought there would be no chance I would go to the bullpen (this spring). I pitched 30 innings and I had a good spring, probably the best spring I've ever had."
Analysis: Franklin has proven to be an unreliable Fantasy option. Use him only in desperate situations at your own risk, or pick him up on a flier in case he pitches halfway decent.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin likely will make a spot start for the Phillies on Sunday in Toronto. Franklin, who has a 4.10 ERA as a reliever, will be needed because Tuesday's rainout forced the Phils and Orioles to play a doubleheader Wednesday.
Analysis: Franklin has proven to be an unreliable Fantasy option. Use him only in desperate situations at your own risk.
News: With Tuesday's rainout of the Phillies-Orioles game, the Phillies will not need to make a decision about a fifth starter to fill the void left by Brett Myers yet.
Analysis: Expect the Phillies to either call up Eude Brito from Triple-A or move Ryan Franklin into their rotation. Gavin Floyd had a rough outing his last time out in Triple-A and the Phillies would likely want him to rebound before calling him up. Perhaps the rainout will give him enough time to make a case for himself.
News: Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Brett Myers will take a leave of absence from the team through the All-Star break to focus on personal matters following his arrest on assault charges against his wife. Myers was arrested Friday and charged with hitting his wife in the face on a street not far from Fenway Park where the Phillies played the Red Sox. He was freed after his wife posted $200 bail and faces a court date of Aug. 4.
Analysis: Ouch. This hurts. Fantasy owners have no choice but to reserve him and look to other options for the time being. Expect the Phillies to either call up Eude Brito from Triple-A or move Ryan Franklin into their rotation. Gavin Floyd had a rough outing his last time out in Triple-A and the Phillies would likely want him to rebound before calling him up.
News: The Phillies still haven't decided who will pitch Saturday against Tampa Bay. Eude Brito was 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA in two starts filling in for the injured Jon Lieber. Manager Charlie Manuel said he has two or three candidates, including reliever Ryan Franklin, who was a starter in the AL. Gavin Floyd, who began the season in the rotation, has pitched well in both of his starts at Triple-A and is another possibility.
Analysis: Franklin pitched in relief Tuesday, but he still could be used. He would be nothing more than a low-end NL-only option if he did get the nod. He would only be keeping the spot warm for Randy Wolf, though.
News: Monday's off day will give the Phillies a chance to skip LHP Eude Brito (0-2, 10.38 ERA), who has struggled in two starts in place of Jon Lieber (groin). Manager Charlie Manuel hasn't decided who will pitch when Brito's spot comes up again on June 17.
Analysis: One possibility is Ryan Franklin, who hoped to be in the rotation from the start of the season and has had a difficult adjustment to the bullpen. "It has been tough. It's something I haven't done in four years," said Franklin, whose ERA is 5.06. "I found that in relieving, you've got to go out there and get people out. Whereas with starting you can go out there and establish your fastball." Brito's Fantasy value is at a minimum, but he might make his way back into the rotation later this summer. Give Franklin a start or two to show that he's ready for that role again before putting him in your lineup.
News: Phillies right-hander Ryan Franklin would be relieved to be starting again. Franklin has appeared in 25 games out of the bullpen for the Phillies, but he says he's open to the possibility of returning to the rotation -- a role in which he spent the majority of his career. "If they want to do it, I'll do it," Franklin said. Franklin averaged 201 innings a year over the past three seasons with the Mariners, and he signed a contract over the winter to do that with the Phillies.
Analysis: Franklin moved to the bullpen when Gavin Floyd pitched his way into the rotation in spring training. Now Floyd has pitched his way back to the minors, and the Phillies could use some assistance in their rotation. "I can pitch five innings now (and work from there)," Franklin said. "I believe I'll help the team that way. We need to get on a roll here and start winning some games. I think I can give us innings and a chance to win." He has little value in most NL formats until he returns to the rotation.
News: Ryan Franklin has surrendered three earned runs on three hits with one strikeout in his past two innings of work for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Analysis: Franklin (1-3, 4.43 ERA) has also recorded 12 strikeouts in 22.1 innings overall. He has little value in most NL formats.
News: Ryan Franklin has surrendered two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in his past 1 2/3 innings of work for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Analysis: Franklin (1-2, 4.41 ERA) has also recorded nine strikeouts in 16.1 innings overall. He has little value in most NL formats.
News: Philadelphia's bullpen had allowed just three earned runs in its previous 29 innings, before Ryan Franklin gave up Garrett Atkins' homer against Colorado Thursday. "I tried to quick-pitch him," Franklin said. "I thought it was the right thing to do. All the times I've done it, I think I gave up one hit. But he did a good job getting ready to hit the ball."
Analysis: Franklin might get some spot starts later in the year once injuries hit the roster. He's not worth owning in Fantasy play.
News: Ryan Franklin (1-1) worked a scoreless 10th for his first win in Philadelphia Wednesday night vs. the Nationals.
Analysis: He has minimal Fantasy value.
News: Phillies SP/RP Ryan Franklin has worked seven innings this season, going 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA. He has struck out two.
Analysis: The former starter for Seattle is willing to do whatever the Phillies ask. He's not expected to be asked to start games regularly for Philadelphia anytime soon.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin made his first relief appearance Wednesday, pitching two shutout innings. Franklin lost his starting role when RHP Gavin Floyd outpitched him in spring training.
Analysis: It's not out of the question that Franklin gets a start again this season; he may be first in line when a Phils starter goes down. He's a good middle reliever in NL-only leagues.
News: Gavin Floyd's outstanding spring earned him a spot in the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation on Thursday. The Phillies sorted out their pitching logjam by sending Ryan Franklin to the bullpen. Floyd joins Jon Lieber, Brett Myers, Cory Lidle and Ryan Madson in the rotation. Philadelphia could've made room for Floyd by sending Madson to the bullpen, where he pitched well the past two seasons. But Madson also had an excellent spring as a starter.
Analysis: Franklin went 8-15 with a 5.10 ERA in 190 2-3 innings with the Mariners last season, but had some of the worst run support of any starting pitcher. Seattle averaged only 3.4 runs per game for Franklin, the second-lowest amount in the American League and tied for fifth-lowest in baseball. He may regain a spot in the rotation at some point.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin is stretched out for the regular season. He threw 100 pitches in eight innings during a minor league start Monday. Franklin, the Phillies' No. 4 starter, struck out 10 and didn't allow a run until surrendering a three-run homer in his final inning.
Analysis: Franklin has it made in the shade to start in the Phils' rotation, making him a late-end rotation option in NL-only leagues. In CBS SportsLine.com's latest NL-only experts Head-to-Head draft, he was taken in the 22nd round (220th overall).
News: Pitcher Ryan Franklin (2-1) allowed one run over five innings against the Devil Rays, putting together his second straight impressive start. He scattered three hits, striking out four and lowering his spring ERA to 3.55.
Analysis: The only blemish on the veteran right-hander's afternoon was a two-out solo home run by Devil Rays first baseman Travis Lee in the fourth inning. He's only worth drafting late in NL-only play despite this nice outing.
News: SP Ryan Franklin had his best outing of the spring Sunday with 3 2/3 shutout innings. The big surprise was the five strikeouts he racked up. "I'll have a game here and a game there where I strike more guys than usual," said Franklin. "I see a lot of guys taking (pitches) against me. I think they're trying to get a feel for me like I'm trying to get a feel for them."
Analysis: Franklin is expected to enter the regular season in the rotation, but he's still no better than a late-round choice in NL leagues.
News: Ryan Franklin allowed two runs on five hits in two innings in his spring debut against the New York Yankees. He struck out one and walked none.
Analysis: Franklin is expected to enter the regular season in the rotation, but he's still no better than a late-round choice in NFL drafts.
News: Phillies GM Pat Gillick hopes new signee Ryan Franklin can bolster the Phillies' rotation, even with consecutive 15-loss seasons. Another concern is Franklin has allowed 34, 33 and 28 home runs the last three years and is now pitching in Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia's notorious hitters' bandbox. "He's run through a couple of rough ones, but we think he's definitely going to bounce back and take a spot in our starting rotation," Gillick said.
Analysis: Franklin will join a rotation that includes Brett Myers, Jon Lieber and Cory Lidle. The Phillies have considered moving reliever Ryan Madson to the rotation, and former All-Star Randy Wolf is out until at least late July while recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery. While Franklin has won at least 10 games only once, he was durable for the Mariners, making 94 starts with six complete games. "I'm certain the Phillies are going to give him a lot more offense than he had in Seattle," Gillick said. "If he loses 15 games, he's going to win 16 or 17." That's a little much. We say only use Franklin as a back-end option in NL leagues.
News: The Phillies agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Ryan Franklin on Thursday, pending a physical. Franklin, who was non-tendered by the M's, went 8-15 with a 5.10 ERA in 190 2/3 innings last season. While Franklin has won at least 10 games only once, he was durable for the Mariners, making 94 starts with six complete games over the last three seasons. He also pitched over 200 innings in 2003 and 2004.
Analysis: Only five pitchers finished with more than Franklin's 15 losses in '05, which had to kill any Head-to-Head owner that started him. After signing with the Phillies, he'll compete for a back-end rotation spot in one of baseball's worst parks for pitchers. Franklin, who was suspended 10 days after testing positive for a steroid, allows too many hits, too many walks and doesn't strike out enough batters to make him more than a late pick in deeper NL-only leagues.
News: The Mariners failed to offer a 2006 contract to Ryan Franklin on Tuesday night, making the pitcher a free agent. The 32-year-old right-hander went 8-15 with a 5.10 ERA in 190 2/3 innings last season, when he earned $2.4 million. "It didn't make any sense to tender him," Seattle GM Bill Bavasi said, adding the team informed Franklin of its decision Tuesday.
Analysis: Only five pitchers finished with more than Franklin's 15 losses in '05, which had to kill any Head-to-Head owner that started him. He allows too many hits, too many walks and doesn't strike out enough batters to make him more than a late pick in the deepest of leagues. It's unlikely he finds himself with a starting job this spring.
News: The Mariners, who lost 93 games this year and 99 in 2004, must decide by Tuesday night's deadline whether to offer contracts to Gil Meche and Ryan Franklin, two members of their rotation. Both are eligible for arbitration.
Analysis: GM Bill Bavasi would not say what will happen. But -- for what it's worth -- a team letter sent to season-ticket holders Monday listed Meche on the roster and omitted Franklin. Sticking with the M's and keeping their rotation spot is the best shot at having Fantasy value for both of these AL-only arms. They're not big winners, strikeout artists or low-ERA/WHIP guys.
News: The Mariners switched their rotation so RHP Ryan Franklin will pitch Wednesday and LHP Jamie Moyer will go Friday so he has an extra start at Safeco Field where he has been so good. "The extra day won't hurt him," manager Mike Hargrove said. "As well as he's pitched, he is over 40."
Analysis: Moyer and Franklin are more of an AL-only starting pitcher options at this point.
News: Ryan Franklin was roughed up in his return from a steroids suspension against . The right-hander gave up eight runs and 12 hits in 4 1-3 innings. He was glad to rejoin the Mariners but disappointed he gave up eight runs and tied a career high by allowing 12 hits. "I felt sharp. I didn't miss any spots," the right-hander insisted. "It could easily have been three hits instead of 12. I know I gave up 12 hits, but 10 of them could have been outs."
Analysis: Franklin remains a decent option in larger AL-only leagues despite his steroids problems and this loss.
News: The Mariners activated right-hander Ryan Franklin Friday, who returned from a 10-day suspension for violating baseball's steroid policy. Manager Mike Hargrove said Franklin will start against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.
Analysis: Franklin is 3-1 in his past four starts, but he is liable to give up five-plus runs in any outing. Start him in AL-only leagues if you are desperate for innings.
News: The Mariners are expected to start RHP Ryan Franklin on Saturday at home against the Angels, though Hargrove said he hasn't made up his mind. Franklin is eligible to return from a 10-day suspension Saturday for violating baseball's steroids policy.
Analysis: The Angels have a decent offense and they aren't a great Fantasy matchup for Franklin. But daily-league owners that are desperate for innings should consider activating him.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin pitched a simulated game Monday. He became the eighth player to be suspended under baseball's new, tougher steroids policy last week. The Mariners expect to start him Saturday at home against the Los Angeles Angels. "I'm a mentally tough guy," Franklin said. "I know I'm (going to) go out there ready to pitch."
Analysis: Franklin's Fantasy value is limited to AL-only leagues -- on or off the 'roids. The Mariners' supporting just don't give the so-so pitcher a consisent enough chance to win.
News: Mariners right-hander Ryan Franklin was suspended 10 days Tuesday for violating Major League Baseball's steroids policy, the eighth big-league player caught under the tougher rules enacted this year prohibiting performance-enhancing substances. The announcement came one day after Orioles slugger Rafael Palmeiro was suspended after testing positive for steroids. Franklin, 32, is 6-11 this season with a 4.61 ERA in 22 games, including 20 starts.
Analysis: Not exactly something you would expect for a marginal pitcher. It appears the Mariners are going to call up teen-age phenom Felix Hernandez to replace Franklin in the rotation, so pick up Hernandez immediately in all leagues. Hernandez has been called the best pitching prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America.
News: Seeking favorable matchups, manager Mike Hargrove juggled the rotation for next week's three-game series in Toronto. RHP Ryan Franklin is in line to start Wednesday.
Analysis: Franklin is a viable starter for Fantasy Week 16 (July 18-24) in AL-only leagues. He is working on a two-game winning streak. "I don't know how to act right now. Winning two in a row -- I can't remember the last time I did that. It feels good," he said.
News: Ryan Franklin has stopped worrying about the lack of run support that has plagued him the last 1½ seasons. He won Saturday night, thanks to a five-run fifth inning capped by Richie Sexson's two-run double. It's the first time Franklin has won consecutive starts this season, following his six-hit shutout at Kansas City last Monday. "I don't know how to act right now. Winning two in a row -- I can't remember the last time I did that. It feels good," he said. Franklin (5-10) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking three.
Analysis: The right-hander, who received the worst run support in the majors last season, has left seven starts this year before his teammates could score a run. The Mariners were shut out in three of those games. "I told myself before my start at Kansas City that I wasn't going to even think about run support. That's over with," Franklin said. "I can only control what I can control -- and that's keeping them from scoring." Franklin is a decent option at starting pitcher in AL-only leagues at this point.
News: Franklin allowed only six hits and one walk in a complete game shutout on Monday at Kansas City to improve to 4-10.
Analysis: Franklin provided Fantasy owners who took the chance on the two-start pitcher with a very solid outing to start the week. Next up for Franklin will be a date with the Angels over the weekend in Anaheim.
News: Franklin allowed six earned runs and nine hits in seven innings at Oakland on Wednesday to fall to 3-10.
Analysis: Franklin had been let down on several occasions by his offense, but on Wednesday it was all on him. He is not a recommended Fantasy pitcher in any format.
News: Franklin surrendered 10 hits and seven runs in 2 2/3 innings Tuesday against Toronto. He struck out one and allowed two home runs.
Analysis: After winnings his first start, Franklin has just one win in his past 10 games. After this rough outing, he might find himself in the bullpen in the near future.
News: Franklin allowed five earned runs on three hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings against San Diego Friday. It was his fifth loss of the season.
Analysis: Franklin should only be considered in larger AL-only leagues against favorable matchups at this point.
News: Ryan Franklin allowed five hits, five walks and five runs in five innings Monday against the Red Sox. He struck out three and allowed two home runs in the loss.
Analysis: Franklin is 0-4 with a 5.60 ERA in his past four starts. He'll match up against the Red Sox later in the week.
News: Franklin allowed seven earned runs and 10 hits in only 4 1/3 innings at Texas to fall to 1-3.
Analysis: Franklin pitched well in each of his past three starts, so chalk this up as one bad outing in a difficult pitcher's park.
News: RHP Ryan Franklin has made two strong starts after beginning the season in the bullpen. He took a shutout into the ninth inning last Monday and, against the White Sox on Saturday, he allowed only four hits in eight innings, but was outdueled by Mark Buehrle in a 2-1 loss. "I was happy with my performance, but I can't be happy that we lost," Franklin said. Manager Mike Hargrove has been impressed. "For Ryan to go out, especially after what he did against KC, and back it up with an outing that was probably even better, was good to see."
Analysis: Franklin was pitching for his job essentially last week. He is a nice AL-only option vs. the A's at home in Fantasy Week 3 on Thursday.
News: Franklin, an emergency starter for Monday's game at Kansas City, allowed two earned runs and five hits in 8 2/3 innings to pick up a win.
Analysis: Franklin was inserted into the rotation in place of Bobby Madritsch (shoulder) who is out indefinitely. For those Fantasy owners who took a chance on Franklin due to his two-start status this week, it is so far, so good.
News: The Seattle Times reports that Franklin is expected to start Monday's game at Kansas City in place of Bobby Madritsch (strained left shoulder).
Analysis: Pick Franklin up in AL-only leagues for what could be a two-start week at Kansas City and the White Sox.
News: The Seattle Times reports Ryan Franklin might replace Bobby Madritsch in the starting rotation. When asked about his current situation coming out of the bullpen, Franklin replied, "I am not happy, but I'm going to do what the team wants. I'm never going to do anything to let the team down, hang my head and screw up the chemistry. I want to win, like everyone else."
Analysis: Aaron Sele is currently the No. 5 starter on the staff. Franklin went 4-16 last season, but had 11 victories and a 3.56 ERA in 2003. He's only worth a roster spot in deeper AL-only formats at this time.
News: Right-hander Ryan Franklin, who made 32 starts in each of the past two seasons for Seattle, has been demoted to the bullpen.
Analysis: His value in all leagues drop to nil. He was only useful in AL-only leagues as a starter, and as a reliever he is not expected to get enough of a role to contribute right now. Drop him.
News: Mariners starter Ryan Franklin worked 5 2/3 innings and gave up nine hits and seven runs. He walked three and struck out three.
Analysis: Franklin's awful spring likely means he will be relegated to long relief to begin the season.
News: Seattle right-hander Ryan Franklin struggled in his outing Wednesday as he continues to fight for the fifth spot in the rotation with veteran Aaron Sele. Franklin pitched five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Analysis: Coming off a 16-loss season a year ago and no guaranteed spot in Seattle's rotation, Franklin has no Fantasy value at this point.
News: All three Rangers homers Sunday came off Ryan Franklin, who has given up 67 homers over the past two seasons. "The mistakes he made were hit hard," pitching coach Bryan Price said. "I don't think he pitched very well the first three innings, and he established it a little bit in the fourth. That's really important." Franklin gave up five runs and six hits in four innings.
Analysis: Franklin was a poor starter, so he didn't have much Fantasy value as it is. Ignore him on Draft Day.
News: Ryan Franklin is the odd man out if Aaron Sele or Mexican League standout Jorge Campillo prove worthy of a rotation spot this spring.
Analysis: This would almost completely wipe out what limited Fantasy value Franklin had in the first place.
News: Ryan Franklin allowed three hits and two runs, one earned, in seven innings Thursday against Oakland. He struck out five and walked one in the start.
Analysis: Franklin ended the season by going 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA in his concluding four starts. He has minimal Fantasy value going into next season.

Analysis: Franklin is winless in his past 16 games. He should not be used in any Fantasy format at this point.
News: Ryan Franklin allowed only three earned runs and five hits in a complete game at Kansas City, but he took the loss to fall to 3-12.
Analysis: With the exception of a poor start on Aug. 12 against the Twins, Franklin has pitched better over his past seven outings, but he has nary a win to show for that effort.
News: Franklin held Tampa Bay to just seven hits and one run in seven strong innings Friday. He did not factor in the decision, however.
Analysis: Franklin is in the midst of personal six-game losing streak. He is scheduled to face off against Johan Santana and the Twins next week. Consider other options besides this unfavorable matchup.
News: Franklin allowed five hits in eight scoreless innings against Montreal Friday. He did not factor into the decision.
Analysis: Franklin is 2-2 with a 3.28 ERA a 1.26 WHIP in his past seven starts. He is one of the only good things happening to the Mariners right now. Consider trading for him while his win totals remain low.
News: After allowed two runs to score in the first inning, Ryan Franklin rebounded and shutout the White Sox for the next six innings. He earned his first win in his last five starts.
Analysis: Franklin has been erratic this season. With Seattle's offensive problems, Franklin is not a wise start in AL-only leagues unless the right matchup is there.
News: Ryan Franklin allowed just one run in seven innings of work. That was enough to beat him as the Mariners dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Minnesota.
Analysis: Franklin had pitched fairly well this season despite the anemic run support. If you remove Franklin’s 4/25 start against Texas (seven runs in two and 2/3 innings), he has a solid 3.15 ERA. Next period, he starts against Baltimore on Wednesday
News: Franklin allowed seven runs in only 2 2/3 innings on Sunday against Texas.
Analysis: Franklin's ERA ballooned to 5.56 as a result. He had two strong performances entering Sunday's game and is still worth using in larger AL-only leagues.
News: Franklin allowed four runs on six hits in six innings Saturday against Oakland to pick up his 11th win of the season. He had missed his previous start on Wednesday with a stiff neck.
Analysis: Franklin will be in consideration for a rotation spot next spring, although the Mariners have a few other young pitchers who should push him for his job by midseason.

Analysis: Franklin has won his past two starts, pitching at least 7 1/3 innings in both starts. He has minimal Fantasy appeal.
News: Mariners manager Bob Melvin told the Tacoma News Tribune that Franklin is assured a rotation spot to start the season. "Ryan's spot is secure, he's going to be one of our starting pitchers," said Melvin. "If he's the fifth starter, he'll probably swing from there to the bullpen when we skip a spot, but he's the best suited for that. And he could be our No. 4 starter."
Analysis: Franklin is a useful pitcher to fill out your staff in an AL-only league, but he doesn't have as much upside as some of the competition for the final spot in the Seattle rotation.
News: Manager Bob Melvin might use Franklin as a fifth starter. Gil Meche might be the No. 4 starter if he makes the team, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Analysis: Franklin is worth a look in AL-only leagues. He is a good filler at the end of a Fantasy staff.
News: Mariners manager Lou Piniella announced Tuesday that Franklin will replace James Baldwin in the starting rotation, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He will start against the Yankees either Friday or Saturday, with Baldwin shifting to long relief. Franklin is worth using in AL-only leagues when the matchup is right, but the Yankees are too good an offense to recommend using him against.
Analysis:
News: Franklin pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief Sunday in Chicago and might replace James Baldwin in the Mariners' rotation this week, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Manager Lou Piniella will make his decision on a possible switch on Tuesday, but keep Franklin reserved for this week until it becomes official. Franklin would face a tough matchup against the Yankees even if he does get moved into the rotation.
Analysis:
News: Franklin will pitch out of the bullpen for now. Manager Lou Piniella had been switching Franklin and John Halama at the fifth spot in the rotation, but has decided to stick with Halama. Keep Franklin out of your active lineup. He will be useless as a reliever.
Analysis:
News: Franklin will still start Saturday's game in Anaheim despite his poor performance Monday in Baltimore. Mariners manager Lou Piniella believes the right-hander is more valuable to the team in a relief role, however, so it is no guarantee that Franklin will get any starts after Saturday. Don't bother with him in an AL-only league unless Seattle makes a long-term commitment to him as a starter.
Analysis:
News: According to The Seattle Times, Franklin will be activated from the disabled list and start on Monday. He is expected to make two starts in the upcoming week.
Analysis:
News: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Franklin will be activated from the disabled list in time to start on July 15. He is currently on the disabled list because of strep throat. This doesn't mean that he will permanently be the No. 5 starter. Manager Lou Piniella said that he will rotate Franklin and John Halama in this role. Fantasy owners should avoid using either pitcher until one is named the fifth starter.
Analysis:
News: Franklin was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to strep throat. The club recalled Julio Mateo from Triple-A Tacoma to take Franklin's spot in the bullpen.
Analysis:
News: Franklin was unavailable for a second straight game Friday against Minnesota due to strep throat. He will not be able to start Sundays game, although he had been mentioned as a candidate to take Rafael Sorianos open rotation spot. Franklin isnt worth picking up unless he moves into the rotation at some point and strings together a few solid starts.
Analysis:
News: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Franklin will be returned to the bullpen regardless of how he fares during his spot start Tuesday against Anaheim. The Mariners are only using him as a starter to try to break up left-handers Jamie Moyer and John Halama in the rotation, so don't add him to your roster right now.
Analysis:
News: The Mariners have decided to start Franklin against Anaheim on Apr. 23 instead of regular fifth starter John Halama, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The move probably won't be permanent. The Mariners want to use the right-handed Franklin instead of the left-handed Halama. Also, they don't want to pitch Halama a day after Moyer, who has a similar style.
Analysis:
News: The Mariners are considering starting Franklin against Anaheim on Apr. 23 instead on regular fifth starter John Halama, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The move probably won't be permanent so don't bother adding Franklin to your roster. The Mariners are simply considering using a right-handed pitcher instead of the left-handed Halama.
Analysis:
News: Franklin was told by manager Lou Piniella Wednesday that he will not be the fifth starter, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Franklin would have been a solid No. 5 pitcher in Fantasy leagues as a starter but will be useless now as a reliever.
