News: Astros reliever Brandon Lyon suffered his first loss of the season Friday against the Marlins. He didn't record an out in the 11th inning, allowing one run on two hits. Lyon has totaled just 2 1/3 innings in four appearances, posting a 7.71 ERA and 1.71 WHIP.
Analysis: Lyon's poor start to the season is showing why the Astros moved Brett Myers into the closer's role. Lyon clearly isn't ready to step back into the ninth-inning role after missing most of last season with a biceps injury. In fact, he doesn't have a set role in the bullpen. Lyon has pitched in multiple situations thus far. He's likely to be a setup man for Myers, but Lyon is a risky Fantasy option at this time.
News: Houston reliever Brandon Lyon (bicep) made his spring debut on Saturday against Washington. Lyon pitched a scoreless inning in the seventh. He gave up one hit.
Analysis: Lyon had a poor season in 2011 and lost the closer role to Brett Myers. Lyon is in competition for a bullpen spot in general. He has Fantasy value only in leagues that reward for holds.
News: Astros relief pitcher Brandon Lyon will not serve as the team's closer for the 2012 season after Brett Myers was handed the role Tuesday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Lyon was projected to replace Mark Melancon, who served as the team's closer last year before he was shipped to Boston during the offseason. Lyon was limited to only 15 games last season due to a detachment of his right biceps tendon. "The main thing for me is getting myself healthy, and we'll figure all that stuff later," Lyon told MLB.com. "I'm not going to go in there and say, 'I want this role.' It's a matter of just basically getting going and seeing where I'm at."
Analysis: Lyon was not expected to be a reliable closing option as he experienced a painfully erratic 2011 campaign. The right-hander surrendered 17 earned runs and 27 hits in just 13 1/3 innings while posting the same numbers of saves as blown chances (four). Clearly affected by the injury, Lyon finished with an 11.48 ERA before having surgery last June. Fantasy owners should not consider him a worthwhile selection in 2012 drafts.
News: Houston reliever Brandon Lyon is reportedly healthy and ready to play this spring training, reports MLBdepthcharts.com. Lyon is returning from surgery to fix a detached biceps tendon/labrum tear. Lyon is projected to be the team's closer if he can avoid beginning the season on the disabled list.
Analysis: MLB.com cites Lyon, along with Henry Sosa and David Carpenter, as an option to replace Mark Melancon in the ninth-inning role. Lyon had been ineffective prior to his surgery, but his injury likely played a role in his poor performance. Then again, Lyon hadn't been one of the better Fantasy relief options in prior stints as a closer, even though he had been healthy. At best, Lyon will be an option for owners in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats, and that is only if he assumes the closer's role.
News: With the departure of ex-closer Mark Melancon to the Red Sox in a trade on Wednesday, Brandon Lyon could reclaim the Astros' closer job next season. MLB.com cites Lyon, along with Henry Sosa and David Carpenter, as an option to replace Melancon in the ninth-inning role. Lyon had been the Astros' closer to start off the 2011 season, but his season ended when he had surgery to repair a detachment of his right biceps tendon in June.
Analysis: Lyon had been ineffective prior to his surgery, but his injury likely played a role in his poor performance. Then again, Lyon hadn't been one of the better Fantasy relief options in prior stints as a closer, even though he had been healthy. At best, Lyon will be an option for owners in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats, and that is only if he assumes the closer's role.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday to make room for the acquisitions in the Michael Bourn to Atlanta trade. Lyon is out for the season after bicep surgery.
Analysis: Lyon finished the year with four saves and a 11.48 ERA for the Astros. He was also 3-3 on the year in his 15 appearances. Fantasy owners in all formats should cut ties with Lyon has he won't be pitching anytime soon. When healthy he was a low-end RP option in mixed leagues. Keep tabs on his recovery process the rest of the season.
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a detachment of his right biceps tendon, according to the Houston Chronicle. Lyon is expected to miss the rest of this season and will start range-of-motion exercises in two weeks. Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery. This issue landed him on the disabled list twice, before he opted to have surgery.
Analysis: Lyon finished the year with four saves and a 11.48 ERA for the Astros. He was also 3-3 on the year in his 15 appearances. Surgery was the only option as Lyon said this is an issue that you can just keep throwing and it goes away, or you rest and it goes away. Fantasy owners in all formats should cut ties with Lyon has he won't be pitching anytime soon. When healthy he was a low-end RP option in mixed leagues. Keep tabs on his recovery process the rest of the season.
News: According to MLB.com, Houston closer Brandon Lyon will have surgery on his right bicep next Thursday. He has been dealing with bicep tendinitis for a while now, which has forced him to the disabled list twice this season. Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery, which will end the relievers season.
Analysis: Lyon has said this is an issue that you can just keep throwing and it goes away, or you rest and it goes away. Surgery was the the likely scenario for Lyon, so he won't be pitching for a while. There has been no timetable for how long he may be sidelined with this injury and recovery time. Mark Melancon will continue to close out games in place of Lyon for the Astros. Fantasy owners in all formats should drop Lyon as he won't be of any use the remainder of the season. A few possibilities for owners to grab in deeper formats that are desperate for saves are -- Matt Capps of Minnesota (55 percent of CBSSports.com leagues), Frank Francisco (29 percent) or Jonathan Broxton (69 percent) when he's healthy and off the DL.
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon will likely need need surgery. He was examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum on Friday and agreed with Dr. Linter's diagnosis of bicep tendinitis. Lyon was just activated from the disabled list on June 9 after a stint with the same issue. No surgery has been scheduled yet. Im thinking thats the direction Im leaning toward, Lyon told the Houston Chronicle. It just seems like thats the only possible way of getting it as close to 100 percent as I can. This is really not an injury where you just keep throwing and it goes away, or you rest and it goes away. Theres no way to get the bicep tendon back in its groove unless you have some kind of procedure done.
Analysis: The Astros recalled Fernando Abad from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Lyon on the roster. Lyon hasn't had many save chances for the lowly Astros this season, but he can't seem to stay healthy enough to pitch anyway. Both are bad news for Fantasy owners. Mark Melancon did a solid job filling in as closer the first time Lyon landed on the shelf, so owners should scoop him up if available. Continue to monitor this situation moving forward.
News: The Astros announced Wednesday that closer Brandon Lyon was placed on the disabled list with bicep tendinitis. The team recalled Fernando Abad from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace him on the roster. Lyon was just activated from the DL June 9 after a stint with the same issue. Lyon will have his arm examined on Friday by Dr. Lewis Yocum, reports MLB.com.
Analysis: Lyon hasn't had many save chances for the lowly Astros this season, but he can't seem to stay healthy enough to pitch anyway. The previous injury likely never healed the proper way and he re-aggravated the issue just days after being activated. Fantasy owners should once again stash him in deeper formats where there's roster space. Otherwise, Lyon can be dropped at this point, especially with the latest setback.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon entered Saturday's contest against the Braves in the 10th inning with the game tied at two. The right-hander allowed each of the first two batters to reach base before surrendering a three-run homer to Brian McCann. He gave up one more hit and was pulled for Fernando Rodriguez without recording a single out. Rodriguez allowed the inherited runner to score, charging Lyon with four earned runs in less than an inning pitched. Lyon earned his third loss of the year in the 6-3 defeat. "I didn't make enough pitches," he said. "Just fell behind a lot. I couldn't find the strike zone and when I did find the strike zone, they hit the ball. Obviously, I will just come out tomorrow, work through it and try to get better." Lyon said the problem wasn't physical and that he felt "great."
Analysis: Lyon made a scoreless appearance after coming off the DL on Thursday but went right back to his old ways on Saturday. He now has a 10.22 ERA in 14 appearances this season, and is just 4 for 8 in save chances. Mark Melancon did a solid job filling in as closer while the 31-year-old was out, and could retain the role outright with Lyon's year-long struggles. Keep an eye on the situation going forward but Fantasy owners in deeper mixed leagues should leave Lyon on the bench until he starts pitching better.
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon surrendered Chipper Jones' homer in the eighth inning of Friday's contest with Atlanta. It was his first appearance since May 4 after coming off the disabled list following Wednesday's game. "It was good to get Lyon in the game, get some of the rust off him," Houston manager Brad Mills said. Lyon was sidelined since May 6 with right biceps tendinitis and a partial right rotator cuff tear.
Analysis: Lyon is expected to be eased back into the closer role that Mark Melancon took over in his absence. Friday was an obvious non-save situation and attempt to put no pressure on him in his first appearance. That didn't work out too well as he gave up a home run. Fantasy owners should watch Lyon's progress for a few outings before tossing him back into those lineups. He blew four saves in eight chances before landing on the DL, so he's only a low-end RP option in deeper formats when healthy.
News: Houston activated RP Brandon Lyon from the disabled list after Wednesday's game, according to the team's website. Lyon was sidelined since May 6 with right biceps tendinitis and a partial right rotator cuff tear. Lyon said he felt good and didn't have any pain in his arm on Wednesday after throwing 10 pitches in his second rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City a night before. Its about time to get out there, Lyon told the Houston Chronicle. RP Jose Valdez was sent to Triple-A to accommodate a roster spot for Lyon.
Analysis: Lyon is expected to be eased back into the closer role that Mark Melancon took over in his absence. Well kind of ease him into it before we put him absolutely all the way in to be the closer, Astros manager Brad Mills said. His experience and what hes done in the past, we definitely want him to be that guy. Were going to let him get a few innings under his belt and ease him into that spot. Fantasy owners should consider Lyon a shaky RP option when he claims ninth-inning responsibilities after he blew four saves in eight chances before landing on the DL.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon is expected to be activated off the disabled list on Thursday, reports MLB.com on Wednesday. Lyon will not immediately return to the role of closer as he'll be worked back into it, according to manager Brad Mills. That said, Mills was adamant about the fact that Lyon is his closer when he's ready.
Analysis: Lyon should be monitored upon his return to see how long it will take for Mills to put him back in save situations. It sounds as if it just a matter of time before that happens. Lyon is 4 for 8 in save chances on the season and has posted a 7.15 ERA through 11 1/3 innings thus far. Only owners in deeper mixed formats should begin using him upon activation.
News: Houston RHP Brandon Lyon pitched an inning on his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Manager Brad Mills said Lyon felt good after throwing 10 pitches in the inning. Lyon is on the 15-day DL with right biceps tendinitis and a partial right rotator cuff tear. He could be activated as soon as Thursday.
Analysis: Lyon appears to be very close to making his return to the mound after his last rehab appearance Tuesday. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor him until he does get the call. Lyon is 4 for 8 in save chances on the season and has posted a 7.15 ERA through 11 1/3 innings thus far. Only owners in deeper mixed formats should begin using him upon activation.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon, who has been on the disabled list since May 5 with shoulder problems, could be activated as soon as Thursday, reports MLB.com. Lyon began a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, allowing two hits while facing four batters in one inning of work. He is scheduled to pitch again on Tuesday and if all goes well will join the team on Thursday. "We could keep him there for another outing if things don't go well or he doesn't feel quite right, but I don't foresee that happening," said manager Brad Mills.
Analysis: Lyon appears to be very close to making his return to the mound, although he still has one more rehab appearance to go. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor how he fares on Tuesday night to make sure he doesn't suffer a setback. Lyon is 4 for 8 in save chances on the season and has posted a 7.15 ERA through 11 1/3 innings thus far. Only owners in deeper mixed formats should continue to stash the right-hander heading into Fantasy Week 10 (June 6-12).
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon is on course to start his rehab stint at Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday after throwing a simulated game on Thursday. Lyon has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 5 with right biceps tendinitis and a partial tear of his rotator cuff. He threw 20 pitches on Thursday and told MLB.com he took a step in the right direction. "I thought it went pretty good," he said. "It was my first time out there and seeing hitters. I felt better than I expected to. I was trying to work on some things, get an idea of seeing a hitter up there. I had [Angel] Sanchez batting left-handed, so I didn't take it too seriously. I was just trying to work on throwing to a catcher and working on location, knowing someone isn't try to kill it. I felt good, and it was a step in the right direction."
Analysis: Before landing on the DL, Lyon blew four save opportunities and allowed nine earned runs in 11 1/3 innings. "I had a lot more strength in my arm and I'm bouncing back quicker day to day," he said. Fantasy owners should keep Lyon stashed as he'll probably need a few outings before he returns to the Astros. Once healthy, Lyon should be viewed as a low-end RP option in deeper formats.
News: Astros manager Brad Mills said Tuesday that RP Brandon Lyon (shoulder) will continue his throwing program and is on track to throw in a simulated game on Thursday.
Analysis: If Lyon makes it through his sim game on Thursday, then the next step will probably be to send him out on a rehab assignment. He likely will need a few appearances before returning, but Lyon could be back with the Astros by Week 10 (June 6-12). Mark Melancon hasn't been outstanding in Lyon's absence, so Lyon will likely resume his closer's role once healthy. Don't activate him for the upcoming scoring period, but he is certainly worth a look in deep Fantasy formats assuming he returns to his closer's role.
News: MLB.com reports that Astros closer Brandon Lyon, on the 15-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis and partial rotator cuff tear, felt fine after throwing a bullpen session on Saturday. Manager Brad Mills plans on sending the right-hander on a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City, which is expected to begin next Sunday. "He's going to stay back here in the pitchers' program and throw a side here," Mills said. "Then he'll head out and have a couple of rehab assignments." After throwing on Sunday, Lyon is expected to take a day off before make another appearance on Tuesday.
Analysis: Lyon has been throwing long toss to keep him arm in shape and is expected to face live hitters sometime during Week 9 (May 30-June 5) before heading out on his rehab assignment. He could return after making a couple of appearances at Triple-A so Fantasy owners should keep an eye on his progress over the next week or so. The 31-year-old went just 4 for 8 in save chances while posting a 7.15 ERA before landing on the DL, but should resume his role as closer over Mark Melancon once healthy. Fantasy owners in deeper formats should keep Lyon stashed away for one more scoring period as he might be able to return for Week 10 (June 6-12).
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon told MLB.com that he plans to talk with manager Brad Mills on Friday on the next step of his rehab. Lyon, who is on the 15-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis and partial rotator cuff tear, has made progress and thrown a few times off flat ground since landing on the DL. He'll still have to face hitters and likely go on a minor league rehab assignment before returning to Houston. He said he's still feeling tightness and soreness in his shoulder though, but that is natural after his pitching stints this week. "I'm just going off how I feel, and I expect to feel a little soreness," Lyon said. "I feel probably better than I thought I would feel, but I still don't want to get overconfident and start doing things I shouldn't be doing."
Analysis: Lyon last threw in a game on May 4 versus the Reds, when he allowed three runs on four hits, without recording an out. Lyon holds a 3-2 record, four saves and a 7.15 ERA so far this season -- not too impressive. Until more is known on his rehab plan, Fantasy owners in the deepest of leagues should keep him stashed. Continue to monitor his progress, but even when healthy, Lyon wasn't worth too much in Fantasy. When healthy and pitching well, he is merely a low-end RP option.
News: MLB.com reports that Houston closer Brandon Lyon, who remains on the DL with right biceps tendinitis and partial rotator cuff tear, threw for just about 10 minutes Monday off of flat ground after throwing for about six minutes Friday and Saturday. "We'll probably know a little bit more after he has a few days of throwing," Astros manager Brad Mills said. Lyon has been on the DL since May 5 with the injury, and he remains on more of a a long-term rehab plan.
Analysis: Lyon has been expected to serve a long stint on the disabled list, and that continues to remain the case. The closer is dealing with two different injuries, and he is only now beginning to build back arm strength. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor the issue in the coming days, as Lyon progresses. He wasn't a reliable RP option in the majority of Fantasy formats, converting just four of his eight save chances on the year to go along with a 7.15 ERA before he went on the shelf. The 31-year-old is not worth stashing outside of deeper formats.
News: Astros manager Brad Mills said after Monday's game against the Reds that he expects closer Brandon Lyon's stint on the disabled list to stretch longer than 15 days. Lyon went on the disabled list last Thursday with tendinitis in his biceps and a partial tear in his rotator cuff, which can heal without surgery. Mills said after the swelling subsides, it will take some time for him to build back his arm strength enough to return, but gave no indication of how much longer than 15 days that could take.
Analysis: Lyon posted a 7.15 ERA and converted just four of his eight save opportunities before landing on the DL, and it looks as though he might be a little while away from returning. He received a cortisone injection last Friday so continue to monitor his progress in the coming days. He converted 20 of his 22 save chances last season, when he went 6-6 with a 3.12 earned-run average, so keep Lyon stashed away in deeper mixed league while he is on the shelf.
News: MLB.com reports that Houston closer Brandon Lyon, who was placed on the 15-day DL Thursday due to tendinitis in his biceps and a partial tear in his rotator cuff, received a cortisone injection on Friday and did not accompany the team on their trip to Pittsburgh. The next step of his rehabilitation will be determined after it is known how his shoulder reacts to the injection. Mark Melancon is expected to fill in as closer while Lyon is out.
Analysis: Lyon posted a 7.15 ERA and converted just four of his eight save opportunities before landing on the DL so hopefully the time off will be a good thing for the right-hander. He converted 20 of his 22 save chances last season, when he went 6-6 with a 3.12 earned-run average, and Fantasy owners would love to see that pitcher once he returns. Owners in need of a replacement might want to look at Melancon but keep Lyon stashed away in deeper mixed league while he is on the shelf.
News: Houston officially placed RP Brandon Lyon on the 15-day disabled list Thursday night after an exam earlier in the day found a problem with his pitching arm and shoulder. Lyon returned to Houston and had an MRI exam that showed tendinitis in his biceps and a partial tear in his rotator cuff, which can heal without surgery. The Astros called up RP Jose Valdez, who was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday, to take his spot.
Analysis: Lyon converted 20 of his 22 save chances last season, when he went 6-6 with a 3.12 earned-run average. This season, he has blown four save chances in eight tries and owns a 3-2 record with a 7.15 ERA. Lyon has given up 21 hits and nine runs in 11 1/3 innings. RP Mark Melancon will move into the closer's role for now. Fantasy owners should view Melancon as a solid replacement as Lyon could be out for an extended time.
News: The Astros announced that Astros closer Brandon Lyon was diagnosed with biceps tendinitis and a partial tear of his right rotator cuff on Thursday. Lyon will be placed on the 15-day disabled list. The injury is expected to be treated without surgery.
Analysis: The shoulder injury explains a lot about his widely chronicled early-season troubles. He was hanging on to the closer role by a thread prior to the injury and his future remains seriously cloudy now, even when he is healthy enough to return. In the meantime, Fantasy owners should turn to Mark Melancon, who has a lot more life in his pitches and has more upside as a Fantasy option at this stage than Lyon did anyway.
News: The Astros announced Thursday morning that closer Brandon Lyon would travel to Houston to visit a doctor about weakness in his pitching shoulder. Lyon continued his poor 2011 campaign, blowing his fourth save of the season on Wednesday afternoon in Cincinnati without getting a single out. He has blown four saves this season and is sporting a 7.15 ERA. "We've had some questions about whether the arm strength in there has been exactly what it needs to be," Astros manager Brad Mills, who has appointed right-hander Mark Melancon as the closer in Lyon's absence, told MLB.com. "He's been on the [daily medical] treatment sheet with a little bit of a biceps tendinitis type of thing, but the more they talked yesterday, Brandon acknowledged he had some weakness in his shoulder, so we just felt it behooved us to get him back into Houston and see Dr. Lintner and try to determine what the best course of action will be," Astros general manager Ed Wade said.
Analysis: There is no real timetable for Lyon's absence at the moment, but Fantasy owners should be prepared to be without him for a while. The way he was pitching, you may have wanted to reserve him anyway. Wilton Lopez seems to be the best option to get save chances in the interim, but the Astros are trying to bring him along slowly given the fact he is coming off an injury. Fantasy owners should keep close tabs on this situation as it develops, but at the rate Lyon is going his days as the team's closer may be numbered. An injury might go a long way toward explaining his early-season troubles, however.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon continued his poor 2011 campaign, blowing his fourth save of the season on Wednesday afternoon in Cincinnati without getting a single out. Entrusted with a 2-0 lead after the Astros allowed just one hit through eight innings, Lyon allowed a walk and four hits to give up three earned runs, raising his ERA to 7.15. "We've got confidence in our bullpen, even with Brandon," catcher J.R. Towles said. "It wasn't like they were squaring balls up. He's having some bad luck now."
Analysis: Lyon also blew a save on Saturday, his last time out. The Astros are not crawling with closer options in the bullpen at the moment, which might be the only reason Lyon is still clinging to this job. Wilton Lopez is being worked back into the mix slowly coming off an injury, but he might be worth investing in off the waiver wire considering how unlikely it appears right now that Lyon will be the team's closer if he continues with these types of outings. He simply could not buy an out on Wednesday and has looked overmatched at several points this season. Lyon is about as poor an option as there is in Fantasy among regular closers right now.
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon blew his third save of the season on Saturday against Milwaukee, but improved to 3-1 on the year. He gave up a game-tying home run to Prince Fielder in the top of the ninth inning, taking SP Wandy Rodriguez out of contention for the win. The Astros would strike again in the bottom half of the inning, giving them the 2-1 win. Lyon gave up two hits in his inning of work.
Analysis: This was the second time in the past seven days that Lyon blew a save, but got a win. That is something that Fantasy owners aren't big fans of, especially if they had the starting pitcher in the lineup Lyon has pitched OK for the Astros this season as the closer as he's converted four saves and won three games. He's given up 17 hits, walked two and struck out five batters over his 11 1/3 innings of work this year. Despite his 4.76 ERA, Lyon is still worth using in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues -- especially formats that start two relievers.
News: Though not a save situation, Astros RP Brandon Lyon got an inning of work in Friday against the Brewers. He entered in the ninth as usual, but the team was down 5-0. Lyon had a 1-2-3 outing, getting the first batter down on strikes before forcing the last pair of hitters into ground outs.
Analysis: Lyon recorded a pair of wins in each of his previous two outings, because he allowed runs when called upon and blew a save in the process. Friday's outing was the complete opposite, as he pitched with a deficit just to keep his arm loose. Lyon didn't give up a hit for the fourth time this season, and he lowered his recently-ballooned ERA to 4.35 in the process. Fantasy owners should stick with the right-hander as a low-end RP option moving forward.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon was bailed out by his teammates for the second consecutive outing Tuesday against the Cardinals. Lyon, who picked up the win Saturday after his teammates rallied for the win, entered Tuesday's game in the ninth with the score tied at 4. He gave up back-to-back doubles to open the inning, which catapulted St. Louis to a 5-4 lead. Lyon retired the next three batters in order, which included a strikeout of David Freese. He moved to 2-1 on the season after Houston plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge out a 6-5 win.
Analysis: Lyon has been far from dominant in 2011, as his 4.82 ERA speaks volumes. But the Astros don't have any better options right now in the closer's role, so he will continue to get the ball. Lyon is still more of a low-end Fantasy starter.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon entered Saturday's game agianst the Brewers in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. After retiring the first batter he faced, the right-hander gave up a single to Ryan Braun, and Prince Fielder followed that with RBI double. It was Lyon's second blown save in the season. But Houston was able to put up three runs in the top of the 10th inning, including an RBI double by Lyon, and the 31-year-old worked a perfect bottom of the frame to come away with the win in the 9-6 victory. "The way he battled through and pitched both those innings," manager Brad Mills said, "and you can't say enough about his first major league hit, either."
Analysis: Lyon has a 4.32 ERA in eight appearances so far this season while going 4 for 6 in save chances. Along with picking up the win on Saturday, he snapped his scoreless inning streak and allowed his first earned runs since opening day. Fantasy owners should not get too down on him just yet as he has posted 20-plus saves twice in his career and should be able to do the same in 2011. Continue to roll with Lyon as a low-end Fantasy RP in deeper mixed leagues.
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon gave up a hit in the ninth inning on Wednesday against the Mets. Lyon was able to shut down New York, however, as he notched his fourth save in a 4-3 victory. Lyon threw 11 pitches in the ninth and six went for strikes. His ERA is at 4.26 on the year.
Analysis: Lyon blew a save on opening day with three runs allowed over 1/3 of an inning on six base hits. His ERA was at 81.00 after that outing. He's pitched six scoreless innings in six appearances since and has four saves in four chances over that stretch with just five hits allowed. Lyon has regrouped and is well worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy RP in mixed leagues.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon (0-1) allowed two hits but no runs to post his third save of the season in the Astros' 5-3 victory over San Diego on Saturday night. Lyon, who replaced RP Jeff Fulchino for the ninth inning, surrendered a hit to two of the first three batters he faced before retiring Eric Patterson and Will Venable for his second save in the last three days. Lyon now ranks eighth in the National League with three saves.
Analysis: Since blowing his first save of the season -- on his first opportunity -- Lyon has been extremely effective as the stopper in the Houston bullpen. The veteran right-hander allowed his first hit in three appearances Saturday, but was able to strand the runners and lower his ERA to 5.06 this season. Fantasy owners should consider him a suitable RP option in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon entered Thursday's game against the Padres in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order to secure the 1-0 win and earn his second save of the season.
Analysis: Lyon is now 2 for 3 in save chances this season and has made fourth straight scoreless appearances since his meltdown on opening day. The right-hander showed last season that he can be a quality closer so expect his 6.23 ERA to come down drastically over the next few weeks. While Houston is not expected to win a ton of games this season, Lyon should be able to collect his fair share of saves so continue to view the 31-year-old as a low-end Fantasy RP.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless inning of work in Monday's game against the Cubs. He entered in the ninth inning with his team trailing by one and worked a perfect 1-2-3 frame. He also struck out one in the 5-4 loss.
Analysis: Lyon has made three scoreless appearances since blowing the save on opening day and lowered his ERA to 8.10 on Monday. The right-hander went 20 for 22 in save chances last season with a 3.12 ERA so Fantasy owners should expect him to get better with each passing outing. It would be nice if the Astros started winning some games to gave him a shot at some saves but either way, continue to view Lyon as a viable option in deeper mixed leagues going forward.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon, who got roughed up in his first save opportunity last week, gave up two hits to the Reds on Thursday but managed to hold on for the save in a 3-2 victory.
Analysis: Lyon is one of the scarier closers in Fantasy play, especially as he plays for what could be the weakest team in baseball. His hot run down the stretch last season drove a lot of folks to snap him up in mixed leagues this March, and while he might not get a whole ton of save opps, Lyon remains a solid No. 2 Fantasy option for the time being.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon got back into a game Tuesday against the Reds even though it wasn't a save situation. Lyon took the hill for the first time since his meltdown on opening day in Philadelphia. He responded much better against Cincinnati, tossing a perfect eighth inning. "The big thing was for Brandon, to get him back in there," manager Brad Mills told MLB.com. "He was able to move the ball around the strike zone with all of his pitches."
Analysis: Lyon is definitely prone to his meltdowns. Even over the final two months in 2010 when he recorded 19 saves in a 32-game span, he allowed three or more runs twice. But the Astros aren't about to pull the plug on their closer this early. Lyon is still worth a look in Fantasy leagues that start at least two RPs.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon did not get off to a very assuring start on Friday, blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning and eventually taking the loss. Prior to entering the game, only four of the first 29 Phillies batters got a hit. Lyon entered the game in the ninth with a 4-2 lead and allowed six hits to seven batters, giving up three runs. "I left some balls on the plate that I didn't want to, and when you make those pitches they're going to hit them," Lyon told MLB.com. "They found some holes, and in this game that's what's going to happen if you don't make the pitches."
Analysis: Lyon had a poor spring and he carried that over into the regular season. One game is far too early to start calling for Lyon's job, but definitely not too early to start speculating who might be there to pick up the pieces if he continues to falter. Jeff Fulchino and Wilton Lopez could be sleepers in this mix. Lopez was the only reliever used in between starter Brett Myers and Lyon on Friday, pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Continue to view Lyon as a viable Fantasy relief option for as long as he retains his job. He certainly has the most closer pedigree of the options currently available in Houston and will get plenty of chances to prove he can do the job.
News: After missing his last scheduled appearance due to an illness, Astros closer Brandon Lyon returned to the mound on Saturday against the Nationals. He worked one inning and gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits. Lyon has a 6.43 ERA in seven outings this spring.
Analysis: Lyon has not looked too sharp this spring but he appears to be over his illness, which is a good start. The 31-year-old will be the closer from the get-go this season, and showed last year that he can handle the job by going 20 for 22 in save opportunities. While the Astros might not win a ton of games this season, Lyon should record 20-30 saves as long as he can stay healthy. Continue to view the right-hander as a No. 2 Fantasy SP heading into 2011.
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon had been scheduled to pitch an inning in a minor league game on Tuesday but was scratched, reports MLB.com. Lyon has an illness and is considered day to day. Lyon has a 6.00 ERA this spring over six innings with just one strikeout. Hitters are batting .346 off him.
Analysis: Lyon has been improved of late with just one run allowed over his last four appearances since getting knocked around early in spring. He should be just fine as the team's closer to start the year. If he can stay healthy and effective, Lyon could post 20-plus saves this season on a rebuilding Astros team. Consider him a No. 2 Fantasy RP in all formats.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon maintained his strong play recently and tossed a perfect inning in the Astros' 6-5 Grapefruit League victory over Washington on Thursday night. Lyon, who is pegged as the team's closer this season, replaced starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez and efficiently retired the Nationals in order during the fifth inning. Lyon recorded the first two outs on ground balls before forcing Danny Espinosa to pop out to the shortstop.
Analysis: After a rough start to the spring, Lyon has calmed down and posted scoreless innings in back-to-back outings. The veteran's ERA surged to 13.50 after his second appearance of the spring, but Lyon lowered that number to 6.75 after Thursday. He still does not have a strikeout in four outings this spring, but has not surrendered a walk either. If he can stay healthy and effective, Lyon could post 20-plus saves this season on a rebuilding Astros team. Consider him a No. 2 Fantasy RP in all formats.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon didn't do a good job Friday in his one inning of work against the Cardinals. Lyon allowed two runs on four hits. He now has a 13.50 ERA in two spring outings.
Analysis: Lyon is the concrete closer at the moment in Houston, but these first two spring outings might be putting a few negative thoughts in manager Brad Mills' head. Lyons saved 20 games last season, and while the Astros aren't expected to be a contender in 2011, Lyon should get enough chances to be a No. 2 Fantasy closer in mixed leagues. He'll need to pitch better than this to hold on to his job once the season starts, though.
News: The Houston Chronicle reports Astros manager Brad Mills has said RP Brandon Lyon is "light-years ahead of where he was last year." Lyon is preparing for his first full season as the Astros' closer. "Nobody wants to be in the situation that I was in last year," said Lyon, who came to camp in 2010 having undergone surgery to have a cyst removed. "I'll just do my normal stuff and hope I don't have to figure it out for the first month of the season. I'm up for the challenge and happy that they feel confidence in me to tell me that (closing) is what I'm going to be doing."
Analysis: Once Lyon got healthy last season he proved to be a very effective arm. He took over the closer's role from Matt Lindstrom and saved 20 games, which was the second-highest total of his career. Lyon has made at least 60-plus appearances in five straight seasons, posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in that span. Lyon is a No. 2 Fantasy RP in mixed leagues on Draft Day.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon could be in line for another solid year as he returns for his second -- and first full -- season as the Astros closer. With a formidable starting rotation that includes Wandy Rodriguez, Brett Myers and J.A. Happ, the right-handed reliever could eclipse his save total (20) from last season as he takes over ninth-inning duties for the departed Matt Lindstrom. Despite assuming closer responsibilities in August, Lyon tossed 78 innings last season -- the second year in a row he reached 75-plus innings. He also finished with 54 strikeouts last year, three shy of matching his career high set in 2009, and 31 walks.
Analysis: The upcoming season will mark just the third team Lyon has stayed with for back-to-back seasons during his nine-year career (Toronto and Arizona). Lyon, who has also played with Boston and Detroit each for one season, failed to convert only two save opportunities in 2010 -- his second-fewest since becoming a full-time closer in 2005. After Lindstrom suffered an injury, Lyon converted 14 consecutive saves at one point late in the season helping him top 20 saves for the second time in his career. He makes for a decent closer option and should be viewed as a No. 2 Fantasy RP in 2011 drafts.
News: For the second time in his career Houston RP Brandon Lyon has reached 20 saves in a season. He allowed one hit in the ninth inning preserving the 2-0 win and helping the Astros earn their 10th shutout of the year.
Analysis: Lyon has had a productive season for the Astros -- his first stint with the team -- as he is 6-6 with a 3.20 ERA over 77 appearances. While he didn't begin the year as the closer, he's finishing it the closer. Lyon has converted four straight save appearances and is a viable RP Fantasy option in deeper mixed leagues. Heading into 2011, owners will have to keep tabs on Lyon and his pecking order in the 'pen.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon recorded his 19th save of the season in Friday's 10-7 win over the Pirates. Lyon allowed a two-out single to Neil Walker, but struck out Garret Jones to close out the Pirates.
Analysis: Lyon is now 19 for 21 in save chances this season and has excelled ever since being named the Houston closer. He has pitched three straight scoreless outings and should remain active in all mixed leagues moving forward.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's 5-3 win over the Reds. Lyon entered the ninth inning trailing 5-3. He did not allow a walk or record a strikeout while earning his 17th save of the season.
Analysis: Lyon has allowed a run in three of his last four outings and blown a save over that stretch. With Matt Lidstrom healthy, Lyon could lose his gig if he keeps pitching poorly. However, he has done well for the most part and as long as he is closing games in Houston, continue to keep Lyon active in mixed leagues.
News: Houston closer Brandon Lyon took a 6-5 lead in the ninth inning on Wednesday afternoon against the Brewers. Lyon allowed two hits in the inning, including Ryan Braun's RBI double to right field, and blew his second save of the year. Milwaukee won 8-6 in extra innings. Lyon struck out a batter and his ERA is at 3.38 on the year.
Analysis: Lyon is struggling right now as he's allowed four earned runs in his last four appearances with a loss and blown save in there. With Matt Lindstrom healthy again, Lyon could lose his gig if he keeps pitching poorly. Still, he should remain the closer for now and is still worth using in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon, who is leading the majors with 16 saves in his last 16 opportunities since the beginning of August, closed out the Brewers in the ninth on Tuesday. Lyon gave up a run on a solo homer but was otherwise perfect in the inning. His ERA is at 3.30 on the year.
Analysis: Lyon has now allowed three earned runs in his last three appearances spanning two innings, but he still picked up saves in two of those. He should continue to see save chances down the stretch so Fantasy owners should keep Lyon active in deeper mixed leagues.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon leads the majors with 14 saves in 14 opportunities since the beginning of August. Former closer Matt Lindstrom got the save on Monday against the Brewers but Lyon had pitched in four consecutive games and was likely unavailable despite the save situation.
Analysis: Lyon gave up two runs without getting an out on Saturday and took the loss to fall to 6-6 on the season. Other than that, he has eight saves in his last 10 appearances and appears to have a strangle hold on the closer role despite the return of Lindstrom. He should continue to see save chances down the stretch so Fantasy owners should keep Lyon active in deeper mixed leagues.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon entered Saturday's game against the Dodgers in the ninth inning with the game tied at three. He walked the leadoff batter before Reed Johnson dropped down a bunt for base hit. The next batter, A.J. Ellis, bunted and Lyon picked up the sacrifice, then hesitated and threw wildly to first as two runs scored. Ellis went to third on the error and scored on pinch-hitter James Loney's double. It was the first time Lyon had given up an earned run since Aug. 11 and earned him his sixth loss of the year.
Analysis: Lyon had gone 15 straight appearances without surrendering a run but finally had a bad outing on Saturday. He went a perfect 12 for 12 in save chances over that span so hopefully he will be able to regain some of that fine pitching that put him on the Fantasy map. He should continue to see save chances down the stretch so Fantasy owners should keep Lyon active in deeper mixed leagues, despite his poor outing.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon earned his 14th save of the season on Thursday against the Dodgers. He faced the minimum in his 14th straight scoreless outing.
Analysis: Lyon has not allowed a single run since a five-run implosion against the Braves on Aug. 11. He has also earned a save in each of his last 10 outings. He has a firm grip over the starting job at the moment and is a good play in leagues that reward saves for the stretch run, even if the Astros aren't a contender. They do seem to play in a lot of close games.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Sunday to earn his 13th save and secure the 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks. The right-hander gave up a one-out double to Brandon Allen but was able to strand the runner and close out the game. Matt Lindstrom, who was the closer earlier in the year, served as setup man in the win.
Analysis: Lyon has taken over the closer's role in Houston and is a perfect 13 for 13 in chances since the team decided go away from Lindstrom. He has not given up an earned run in his last 13 appearances while striking out 13 in 14 innings pitched. He should continue to see save chances for the suddenly hot Astros so keep Lyon active in deeper mixed leagues heading into Fantasy Week 23 (Sept. 6-12).
News: Houston reliever Brandon Lyon worked the ninth inning against Arizona on Saturday for his 12th save in 13 chances this season. "Our bullpen was absolutely amazing again," Astros manager Brad Mills said. Houston rallied to take the lead after starter Bud Norris gave up five runs through 4 2/3 innings. The bullpen shut down the D-Backs the rest of the way allowing just two hits. Houston wound up winning the game, 6-5.
Analysis: Lyon hasn't allowed a run in 12 outings and has lowered his ERA to 3.14. Lyon has done well since taking over as closer. While he's pitching well, Lyon is worth using in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues as a No. 3 RP option. He may not have the job the rest of the season, but owners might as well roll with him for now.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon earned his 11th save on Wednesday afternoon as the Astros defeated the Cardinals. Lyon struck out a batter in the ninth inning and needed 13 pitches in a perfect frame. His ERA is at 3.18 on the season.
Analysis: Lyon has not given up a run in his last 10 appearances and has eight saves over that stretch with 11 strikeouts. Lyon is pitching well, the Astros are playing well and Fantasy owners should be taking notice for the stretch run. That said, the team could also choose to put Matt Lindstrom back into the closer role. Stay tuned for news on that but continue to roll with Lyon in deeper mixed formats until that time.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon earned his 10th save of the season on Tuesday against the Cardinals, allowing a hit and a walk in a scoreless innings. He struck out two batters. Meanwhile, Matt Lindstrom (back strain) pitched a scoreless inning in his first rehabilitation outing for Corpus Christi.
Analysis: Lindstrom could be activated as soon as Wednesday, but there is still no indication as to whether or not Lindstrom would go right back into the closer role. Lyon is worth keeping around in leagues that reward saves for now, but keep a close eye on this situation. His chances for saes could be coming to an end soon.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth inning against New York on Saturday, preserving SP Brett Myers gem of a game, for the 4-1 win. Lyon got the save opportunity with closer Matt Lindstrom sidelined with a stiff back.
Analysis: Until Lindstrom returns to the bullpen, Lyon will remain the temporary closer in Houston. This gives Lyon more value than he probably should have, but as the season winds down, he could be useful in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues that reward saves. He should be considered a stop-gap option for now.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon tossed two scoreless innings Wednesday against the Phillies for his eighth save in nine chances. He struck out pinch-hitter Domonic Brown to end it after allowing a two-out single to Ryan Howard. Lyon had been given the day off on Tuesday night.
Analysis: Lyon will continue to fill in for Matt Lindstrom through at least early September and is worth owning in larger leagues that reward saves, but he will likely go back to his setup role once Lindstrom is healthy. For now, view him as a short-term stopgap in leagues that reward saves.
News: Astros reliever Brandon Lyon was not available to pitch in Tuesday's 16-inning game at Philadelphia after pitching the two previous days. Instead, Jeff Fulchino pitched two innings in the 15th and 16th inning, earning the win and getting the final three outs two secure a 4-2 victory.
Analysis: Lyon should be ready to go again starting on Wednesday, but he missed a chance for a save and possibly a relief win in this long affair. He'll continue to fill in for Matt Lindstrom through at least early September and is worth owning in larger leagues that reward saves, but he will likely go back to his setup role once Lindstrom is healthy.
News: Astros closer Brandon Lyon earned his seventh save of the season in Monday's 3-2 win over the Phillies. Lyon issued one walk and recorded a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis: Lyon has done a nice job while filling in for the injured Matt Lidstrom. He has recorded three straight saves and can be used as a No. 3 Fantasy RP option while he is getting save chances. The Astros tend to play in low-scoring games, so he might get more save opportunities than you think.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon, who is filling in at closer with Matt Lindstrom (back) on the DL, recorded his sixth save of the season and fourth in 10 days Sunday at Florida. He allowed one hit and recorded one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis: Lyon doesn't have closer stuff, but he has been adequate in the role in the past and should be a worthwhile No. 3 Fantasy RP while Lindstrom is sidelined. The Astros tend to play in low-scoring games, so he might get more save opportunities than you think.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth inning on Thursday night, striking out one and securing the 3-2 win over the Mets. The right-hander only needed 13 pitches to retire the side and collected his fifth save of the year in the process. Lyon, who was named temporary closer when Matt Lindstrom went on the DL, has a 3.57 ERA and 40 strikeouts this season.
Analysis: Lyon has not allowed an earned run in five straight outings while picking up three saves and striking out five over that span. He has done a solid job of closing games with Lindstrom on the shelf and could be helping out Fantasy owners in all formats that are in need of some saves. He will likely go back to his setup role once Lindstrom is healthy but in the meantime, continue to view Lyon as a No. 3 Fantasy RP while he's collecting saves.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon, who Brad Mills named temporary closer earlier in the day, didn't get the ball in the ninth inning of a save opportunity Tuesday against the Mets. Rookie Wilton Lopez did and converted for his first career save. Lyon, who has four saves on the season, had pitched three of the previous four days.
Analysis: We're thinking the Astros just wanted to give Lyon a little bit of a breather. Mills named him the closer literally hours before the game, and he has the most experience in the role. Of course, once Matt Lindstrom overcomes his struggles, Lyon will have to forfeit the role, so you shouldn't get too attached to him in Fantasy. He's at best a low-end No. 3 RP.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon will get the majority of the save chances now that the Astros have demoted closer Matt Lindstrom, reports MLB.com on Tuesday. Houston plays the Mets on Tuesday, one game after Lindstrom took the loss with another poor outing. The team wants Lindstrom to pitch a few times in a less pressurized situation to get his momentum back and Lyon will close until that time.
Analysis: Lyon hasn't exactly been a superb reliever this season. That said, in his last three appearances, a couple of which came with Lindstrom injured, Lyon has pitched well. He hasn't allowed a run in his last three outings and has two saves and four strikeouts over that span of three innings. If he can keep pitching well and keeps the closer role into Week 21 (Aug. 23-29), Lyon might be worth adding in some deeper mixed Fantasy leagues.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday night, allowing a hit and striking out one against the Pirates. Lyon, filling in for the injured Matt Lindstrom, picked up his second save in as many nights in the 3-2 win. Lyon lowered his ERA to 3.76 in the outing and is 4 for 5 in save chances this season.
Analysis: Lindstrom is still listed as day to day so Lyon could continue to fill in as closer for a couple more days. The 31-year-old is no stranger to closing games and has done a serviceable job of it this season. Fantasy owners in deeper mixed leagues should keep an eye on the situation as Lyon could be in line for some saves during Fantasy Week 20 (Aug. 16-22). He is merely a stopgap Fantasy RP until Lindstrom is healthy.
News: With Matt Lindstrom sidelined by a back injury, Astros RP Brandon Lyon took over in a save situation on Friday against the Pirates. Lyon didn't waste the golden opportunity, finishing off a 4-1 win for his third save. Lyon got into early trouble in the ninth, allowing a leadoff walk and single. He then struck out Chris Snyder and finished the game off with a double play. It was Lyon's second save of August.
Analysis: Lindstrom got positive news on his back injury on Friday and is only being listed as day to day. But the Astros said they will take a cautious approach. Lyon has been a closer before, so Houston has no problem leaning on him. Fantasy owners in deeper mixed leagues should keep an eye on the situation as Lyon could be in line for some saves during Fantasy Week 20 (Aug. 16-22). He is merely a stopgap Fantasy RP until Lindstrom is healthy.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon will fill in for closer Matt Lindstrom, who was sidelined again on Friday as he deals with a back injury. Lyon is 2 for 3 in save chances this season with a 3.91 ERA.
Analysis: Lyon has been a closer before and could step in if Lindstrom is out for an extended period of time, as Lindstrom's back injury has been lingering for several weeks. Lyon gave up a season-high five runs in his last outing but has had a respectable year thus far. Fantasy owners in deeper mixed leagues should keep an eye on the situation as Lyon could be in line for some saves during Fantasy Week 20 (Aug. 16-22).
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: Astros manager Brad Mills said there would not be a change at the closer position. "Not yet. Not at all. [Matt Lindstrom is] the guy we want," Mills said. He allowed the Brewers four runs while trying to protect a three-run lead Friday, and Tuesday at Minute Maid Park, he allowed a pair of home runs to cough up a 2-1 lead in what would end up a 4-2 loss to Atlanta. Three of the four home runs he's allowed have come in his last two innings. Lindstrom won the closer's job in spring training after the other candidate, Brandon Lyon, underwent dermatological surgery that hampered his progress.
Analysis: Lyon is 6-4 with a 3.14 ERA pitching mostly in the eighth-inning role. Consider him a potential sleeper in deeper leagues if you need a sleeper for saves down the stretch. Lindstrom could still change his manager's mind with further struggles. Lyon has pitched well of late, boasting a 1.46 ERA since the All-Star break and a 0.00 ERA in August.
News: With Matt Lindstrom unavailable on Sunday against the Brewers with a back injury, RP Brandon Lyon was called on for the save situation. He responded by retiring the Brewers in order in the ninth inning for his second save during a 5-2 win. His other save came June 10 against Colorado.
Analysis: Lindstrom is only day to day, so Lyon might not see any save chances heading into Fantasy Week 18 (Aug. 2-8). But if something changes with Lindstrom's status, then we expect Lyon, a former closer, to handle the ninth-inning duties until Lindstrom is healthy. Lyon remains just a Fantasy option in leagues that use true middle men.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon received an injection into his right forearm on Monday to help battle a rash he's been dealing with over the weekend, according to MLB.com. He is available to pitch in the Cubs series. He roughed up his arm diving for a ball at first base last week, then Lyon developed a rash on his forearm from the adhesive on a bandage. "They put a bandage on it, and his arm reacted to the bandage," manager Brad Mills said. "He got a rash, and it was really bothering him. It's a pretty good rash, so he went to the doctor, and the doctor gave him some stuff to calm the rash down."
Analysis: Lyon is 6-4 with a 3.71 ERA on the year over 45 appearances for Houston. He's converted one of his two save chances as well. He's been pitching well since the All-Star break -- two earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Lyon is a solid Fantasy option in leagues that use true middle men at this stage in the game.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon recorded his sixth win of the season during Wednesday's extra-inning victory over the Cubs. He came on in the bottom of the 10th with the score tied 1-1, and pitched a pair of scoreless innings. Houston scored three runs in the top of the 12th while he was still the pitcher of record and held on for the win. Lyon gave up two hits and three walks, striking out one batter.
Analysis: In his previous six appearances, Lyon was 0-3, allowing runs in four of those outings. Despite his shaky month of July, he's still one heck of a contributor for a middle man, providing six wins and 17 holds with an ERA of 3.80. Lyon is a solid Fantasy option in leagues that use true middle men.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon posted a 9.00 ERA in five appearances in July and enters the All-Star break on a two-game losing streak. The right-hander has allowed 16 earned runs off 38 hits in 39 1/3 innings this season while recording only one save. Lyon has a career 4.44 ERA in the second half.
Analysis: Lyon had two solid months, in May and June, and finished the first half with a 3.66 ERA. After posting an ERA under 3.00 last season, it does not look like he will reach the same feat again this year. As the setup man he might see a few save opportunities when Matt Lindstrom is unavailable, but Lyon remains an option strictly in the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon (5-3) walked three batters and allowed two hits in his 1 1/3 innings of work against San Diego on Sunday. Lyon gave up a bases-loaded single to Tony K. Gwynn with one out in the ninth inning, as the Padres came back to get the 3-2 win, taking three of four from the struggling Astros.
Analysis: Lyon failed to come through for the Astros again, as he was charged with his second loss so far this month. Being the setup man for Matt Lindstrom means he should get holds and a few win opportunities, giving him Fantasy value in the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon struck out all four batters he faced in Monday's 9-5 win over the Brewers. He picked up his 15th hold of the season and while lowering his ERA to 2.97.
Analysis: Lyon has allowed just two earned runs over his last 10 2/3 innings of work for the Astros. He has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 26-to-11 while being used primarily as the setup man for Matt Lindstrom. Lyon holds value in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues that use true middle men.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon pitched 1 1/3 innings Sunday against Texas, walking one and striking out two. The rest of the bullpen couldn't hold on for a win as the Rangers won, 5-4. Lyon got his 12th hold of the year and lowered his ERA to 3.30.
Analysis: Lyon has allowed just three earned runs over his last 9 2/3 innings of work for the Astros. He's brought his strikeout total to 21 for the year has issued just 10 walks. As the primary setup man for RP Matt Lindstrom, Lyon holds value in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues that use true middle men.
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Brandon Lyon has not allowed a run in 21 of his past 23 games as a setup man. He has a 1.27 ERA during the span.
Analysis: Matt Lindstrom had been banged up, but he is expected to be ready during Fantasy Week 11 (June 14-20). Lyon is an aged veteran who could close in a situational role, but he is best suited for the setup role he is in. Consider him merely a middle reliever for the deeper Fantasy leagues that value holds or use true middle men.
News: Astros closer Matt Lindstrom did not pitch on Thursday night because of back spasms, according to The Houston Chronicle. Brandon Lyon replaced Lindstrom in the closer's role in the 5-4 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Lyon has one season of 20-plus saves in his career and could be called upon if Lindstrom's injury is serious. He is 5-1 with a 3.04 ERA in 29 appearances this season and could be worth taking a flier on in deeper mixed leagues if he gets more save chances.
News: Houston RP Brandon Lyon earned his first save of the season Thursday as the Astros beat the Rockies, 5-4. He struck out one batter and lowered his ERA to 3.04 for the year. Lyon (5-1) has had just one other save opportunity this season, which was blown.
Analysis: Lyon continues to have a good strikeout to walk ratio (19-to-9), but has little Fantasy value except in NL-only leagues that use true middle men. Monitor him, as he might see more save chances down the road if any happens to current closer Matt Lindstrom, who wasn't used Thursday so he could get some rest.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon retired the only batter he faced on Sunday in a 6-3 win over the Cubs. The right-hander got Starlin Castro to fly out in the eighth to record his ninth hold of the year. Lyon has a 3.42 ERA in 26 appearances this season.
Analysis: Lyon has four wins this season and has only allowed one earned run over his last eight outings. His strikeout to walk ratio is also 2-to-1 (16-to-8). He has pitched well as the setup man in Houston and could be in line for some saves, if Matt Lindstrom falters or needs a day off. For the time being though, Lyon is only viable as a Fantasy option in NL-only formats that use true middle men.
News: Astros reliever Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Thursday's game in Milwaukee. It was his first appearance in five games. "It's obviously nice to get your reps, and everyone knows if you don't get your reps you might lose some comfortability out there, but not for me," Lyon told MLB.com.
Analysis: Lyon, who is tied for the team lead in wins with three, had a 1.29 ERA in his 15 appearances prior to Thursday. He is only viable as a Fantasy option in NL-only formats that use true middle men, however.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon continues to pitch well as the setup man in Houston. He's held his opponent scoreless in seven of his eight appearances during May, going 2-0 with a hold and a 2.25 ERA in this month.
Analysis: Lyon has three wins and four holds on the season, making him a viable Fantasy option in NL-only formats that use true middle men.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that Astros setup man Brandon Lyon has made eight consecutive scoreless appearances spanning seven innings.
Analysis: Lyon might not be the closer in Houston right now, but he'll continue to sit in the shadows ready to pounce should Matt Lindstrom struggle or get hurt. He remains worth stashing away in deeper NL-only formats.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon retired the only batter he faced during Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Reds. He has not allowed a run, hit or walk in four innings over his last five outings.
Analysis: Lyon has recorded three holds and one win in his past five outings. But unless he replaces Matt Lindstrom as Houston's closer, his Fantasy value lies in NL-only formats that value true middle men.
News: MLB.com reports Astros manager Brad Mills wants to give closer Matt Lindstrom and setup man Brandon Lyon the night off on Thursday against the Marlins. "Ideally we'd like to stay away from (Lindstrom on Thursday)," Mills said. "Him and Lyon both." Mills didn't reveal who might close, if he avoids using Lindstrom.
Analysis: Lyon has pitched in the first two games of the Marlins series, so resting him is an option on Thursday. He has had a few rough moments in 2010, which accounts for his 7.36 ERA. But Lyon, who lost out on the closer's job in the spring, might get a few save chances this season when Lindstrom needs a breather. Lyon remains more of a Fantasy RP in leagues that use true middle men.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect eighth inning on Tuesday to earn the win in Houston's 7-5 victory over the Marlins. Lyon needed just 12 pitches to retire three batters, striking out one. He's 1-1 on the season with a blown save.
Analysis: Lyon has been feast or famine this season as the setup man for Matt Lindstrom. He's allowed just two hits and no runs in five appearances, but three earned runs in each of his other two. As a shaky middle reliever with an ERA of 8.53 and no holds, he has little Fantasy value at this time.
News: Astors RP Brandon Lyon threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning against Philadelphia on Sunday after blowing the save the night before. Lyon only needed eight pitches to retire Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, and Shane Victorino in order, to keep the game at 2-1 in favor of the Phillies.
Analysis: Two of Lyons three outings this year have gone well. The blown save Saturday night is his only blemish. As of now he is still the set-up man for the Astros, but as Fantasy owners know, Matt Lindstrom is not the most reliable closer in the bigs. Lyon is valuable in NL-only leagues right now, but if he becomes the closer midway through the season, it will up his value in mixed leagues.
News: MLB.com reports that Brandon Lyon has lost out to Matt Lindstrom in the Astros' closer competition. Lyon will now move into the setup role.
Analysis: Lyon will have a hard time living up to his $15 million, three-year contract pitching out of the setup role, and his Fantasy value will take a hit as well. In deeper NL-only leagues, he is worth stashing on reserves, since Lindstrom does not have a resume that suggests long-term success as a closer. Lyon won't help much with strikeouts, but he can offer a respectable ERA and WHIP, and perhaps some saves later in the season, too.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon made his spring debut on Thursday against the Tigers, allowing one earned run on one hit in an inning pitched. Lyon got a late start after having a small cyst in his right shoulder drained in January. He was relieved to get back on the hill and is looking forward to continuing to make progress. "I just wanted to get out and get some innings," Lyon said. "My adrenaline started to flow and it was good to get started. Now, my goal is to put together back-to-back outings. I'll wake up, stretch it out and keep building my arm strength."
Analysis: Lyon is trailing in his competition for the Astros' closer job with Matt Lindstrom after getting a late start this spring, and Lindstrom allowing just two hits and no runs in four appearances so far. However, Lyon did save 26 games in 31 opportunities back in 2008, so don't count him out yet. His Fantasy value lies in NL-only formats, where he could prove to be a nice sleeper pick if he wins the job.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon, who had a small cyst in his right shoulder drained in January, has started a normal pitching program. He could see his first game action this week.
Analysis: Lyon felt some stiffness after facing live hitters on Friday, but it apparently wasn't a big deal. His delayed start gives Matt Lindstrom the clear advantage in the battle for the closer role, though Lyon's steadiness over the last few years might ultimately win out. He should probably go undrafted in mixed leagues, but he's a good sleeper for saves in NL-only formats.
News: Astros closer candidate Brandon Lyon experienced some stiffness after facing live hitters for the first time this spring on Friday. Lyon, who is recovering from having a cyst drained in his throwing shoulder, is set to throw another 30-pitch side session against live hitters on Sunday.
Analysis: The good news is that it doesn't appear the stiffness will deter Lyon from the next step in his rehab. The bad news is that he still doesn't appear to be 100 percent. Lyon is competing for the Astros' closer job with Matt Lindstrom. The faster he gets healthy, the better chance he has at winning the job. Lyon is shaping up to be a low-end, injury-risk Fantasy option to begin the season.
News: MLB.com reports that Astros RP Brandon Lyon (shoulder) will pitch to hitters for the first time this spring Friday when he throws live batting practice.
Analysis: Lyon is competing for the Astros' closer job with Matt Lindstrom, but should be considered just in NL-only leagues for now because of this injury and the fact he's not guaranteed a job.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon had another bullpen session on Monday, throwing 30 pitches off a mound, according to MLB.com. It was the second time in three days he tossed 30 pitches from a mound. Lyon, who has yet to pitch this spring after having a small cyst in his right shoulder drained in January, is pleased with how his recovery is progressing. "We'll see how my arm reacts again [Tuesday], but everything went well and the ball was coming out of my arm pretty good," he said. "I'm comfortable where I'm at right now." Despite being limited this spring, Lyon believes he still might be ready to go on opening day. "Obviously, you'd like to get your full work in for six weeks, but I'm confident that if everything keeps going the way it's going I'll be ready go to."
Analysis: Lyon is competing for the Astros' closer job with Matt Lindstrom. The cyst has held back Lyon, and at this point it's hard to see him opening the season in that role when he's not even 100 percent yet. While he could get his share of save opportunities this year, or even become the closer at some point during the season, he shouldn't be considered in mixed formats at this time.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon threw a 30-pitch side session off a bullpen mound Saturday and says he's gaining strength in his arm. Lyon is a bit behind schedule after having a small cyst in his right shoulder drained in January. He has yet to make an appearance this spring.
News: Astros general manager Ed Wade announced Sunday that P Brandon Lyon is continuing to build strength in his right shoulder and he might be close to throwing off a mound for the first time this spring MLB.com reports. Lyon has been throwing off flat ground since having his right shoulder drained for a cyst in January. Doctors gave Wade an update on Lyon's health Sunday. "They think, from a health standpoint, he's fine and he just needs to continue to build the strength up," Wade said. "My guess is probably early in the week he'll get up on the mound, and we'll let him throw and continue to get comfortable with his surroundings. We're still of the mind he's going to be fine." Lyon is still not at 100 percent and he is taking things day by day, but he did say that he was lifting weights to strengthen his body and arm.
Analysis: As of right now, Lyon is the only Astros pitcher behind schedule during spring training. He is battling Matt Lindstrom for the closer position and falling behind with an injury isn't exactly helping him. Even if he does land, the closer spot, he has had a tendency to blow saves with his less than elite stuff. Consider him to be a late-round option in mixed formats.
News:Brandon Lyon and Matt Lindstrom are facing off for the Astros' closer's role. The Astros acquired Lyon and Lindstrom after Jose Valverde and setup man LaTroy Hawkins became free agents and signed elsewhere. It's up to first-time manager Brad Mills to decide who fills which role this season. "That's management's decision, whatever is going to be best for the team, either way it goes," Lyon said Tuesday. "If he takes over the job of closer, I'll be happy for him. Hopefully, he'll do the same for me." Although Lyon signed a three-year contract worth $15 million, while Lindstrom signed a one-year deal worth $1.625 million, Mills said he's looking for the more consistent pitcher of the two and he's counting on the competition. "I hope that is one of the hardest decisions I'm going to have to make all spring," Mills said. "If it's a hard decision, that means we've got some guys who are really battling."
Analysis: Mills hasn't ruled out using both of them as closers, depending on the situation. Lindstrom primarily employs a fastball that can reach 100 mph, while Lyon relies more on craftiness. Lyon fell behind in his workout schedule after he underwent a minor procedure in January to have a cyst drained in his throwing shoulder. The cyst was pressing against nerves and weakening his arm, and he's only thrown off flat ground through four days of spring training. Lyon went 6-5 with a 2.86 ERA and three saves for Detroit last season, though he worked primarily as Fernando Rodney's setup man. Lindstrom went 2-1 with a 5.89 ERA and saved 15 games for Florida in 2009, though he missed time with shoulder and elbow problems. We see Lindstrom as the likely closer and the older and riskier Lyon as the setup man at this point. Whoever wins the Astros' closer's job is merely a late-round pick in most mixed leagues right now. They are both worth owning in NL-only formats, though.
News: Astros RP Brandon Lyon will be a little behind schedule for spring training after having a small cyst in his right shoulder drained, according to MLB.com. The cyst had been pressing on a nerve and causing temporary weakness, however Lyon has been throwing without discomfort since the cyst was drained two weeks ago. Lyon will report as scheduled with pitchers and catchers next week, but he will be about 10 days behind in his throwing program. "It shouldn't be an appreciable amount of time," GM Ed Wade said.
Analysis: This should not be a setback for Lyon, who could serve as the team's closer, but we have to figure he is going to wind up a setup man for fellow offseason acquisition Matt Lindstrom. Consider Lyon intriguing in Fantasy only if he is a full-time closer and in a suitable situation for save chances. He won't hold as much value as a middle reliever or setup man as some of the other younger power arms in that role.
News:Brandon Lyon wants to be the Astros' closer, yet will be understanding if he winds setting up Matt Lindstrom. "Who wouldn't want to be in the closer's role?" he said Saturday after finalizing his a $15 million, three-year contract. "Obviously, you'd like to be in there and get your team off the field with a win. But if it's best for the team to pitch in another role, I'll do that." Lyon was 6-5 with a 2.86 ERA in 65 appearances for the Detroit Tigers last season after spending 2005-08 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The right-hander had a career-high 26 saves in 2008 and appeared in a career-best 73 games with a 2.68 ERA in 2007.
Analysis: We have to figure Lyon is going to wind up a setup man for Lindstrom. Consider Lyon intriguing in Fantasy only if he is a full-time closer and in a suitable situation for save chances. He won't hold as much value as a middle reliever or setup man as some of the other younger power arms in that role.
News: Among the Tigers to file for free agency are: Brandon Lyon, RHP; Placido Polanco, 2B; Fernando Rodney, RHP; and Jarrod Washburn, LHP.
Analysis: Polanco is a decent low-end Fantasy second baseman, while Rodney likely needs to return to Detroit in order to be considered a viable closer. Washburn is a low-end starter with injury risk and Lyon is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News:Brandon Lyon (6-5) picked up the loss Tuesday, allowing a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning of Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Analysis: Lyon is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Tigers pitcher Fernando Rodney has been suspended for three games and fined for throwing a ball toward the stands following a game last week. During a postgame celebration on the field after Detroit beat Tampa Bay 4-3 on Friday night, Rodney threw the game ball toward the seats and it ended up in the press box. No one was hit by the ball, which Rodney said he was throwing to the fans. Rodney said at the time he was "feeling the moment." The penalty was announced Tuesday by baseball vice president for discipline Bob Watson. If the players' association appeals, the suspension would be delayed. The Tigers will likely turn to Brandon Lyon to close games the next few days, if there is no appeal.
Analysis: Rodney could be missing the entire Royals series, which is bad news for his Fantasy owners because that could have been a lucrative set in terms of save opportunities. Lyon got a pair of saves last week and could be very useful in mixed leagues during Fantasy Week 23 (Sept. 7-13).
News: Detroit RP Brandon Lyon picked up his 3rd save of the season on Sunday in a win over the Rays. Lyon pitched a perfect 9th inning and struck out a batter to earn his second save in as many nights. His ERA is 2.91.
Analysis: Lyon was closing games with Fernando Rodney getting expected days off on Saturday and Sunday. Rodney will return to the job in Week 23 (Sept. 7-13) and Lyon remains mainly an AL-only Fantasy option in leagues that use true middle men.
News: Tigers RP Brandon Lyon picked up his second save of the season Saturday in an 8-6 win over the Rays.
Analysis: Lyon gets an odd save here and there, but is just a low-end AL-only Rotisserie option at best.
News: Tigers closer Brandon Lyon picked up his first save of the season Thursday afternoon against Baltimore. He worked the final five outs of the game, allowing one hit and striking out two batters as the Tigers won 7-4.
Analysis: Lyon is not going to be in line for saves down the stretch, so Fantasy owners looking for a cheap source for saves should just keep looking. The situation arose where he entered the game in a save situation despite a four-run lead and he was able to finish off the game. Fernando Rodney remains the closer in Detroit. Lyon remains just a middle-relief option for Fantasy leagues that use them.
News: Tigers reliever Brandon Lyon has allowed just one earned run in his last 10 outings. During the month of June, he allowed just one earned run in 16 innings.
Analysis: Lyon recorded two relief wins and three holds in June. He lowered his ERA from 5.70 to 3.89 during the month. He remains just a middle-relief option for Fantasy leagues that use them.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that Tigers RP Brandon Lyon retired all seven batters he faced Thursday, and his recent success has caught his manager's eye. Lyon has not allowed a run in four straight appearances and six out of seven, so manager Jim Leyland hopes he'll be able to handle work in late-game situations. "He doesn't know it yet, but he'll be a big key to our success as this season goes on. And in turn, he's got to do the job," Leyland said.
Analysis: While it's nice to see Lyon gaining his confidence back, he won't have much more than minimal Fantasy value until he starts earning save opportunities, which is an unlikely scenario.
News: Detroit RP Brandon Lyon was called upon to pitch 1 1/3 innings against the Yankees and was part of the 10-run 7th inning on Tuesday. Lyon allowed two hits and two runs while walking two and striking out none. His ERA is 4.91.
Analysis: Lyon has allowed multiple runs in two of his eight appearances this season. He's 1-2 with a blown save and is only a middle-relief option. Lyon remains just a middle-relief option for Fantasy leagues that use them.
News: Detroit RP Brandon Lyon came on in the seventh inning on Sunday against the Rangers down 4-0. By the time Lyon finished pitching two scoreless innings of no-hit ball, the Tigers had taken a 6-4 lead and Lyon earned his first win of the season.
Analysis: Lyon still has a 9.00 ERA after the two scoreless innings on Sunday. He allowed three runs in his only other appearance this season, giving up three hits and two walks in that outing at Toronto on April 7. Lyon was much better Sunday but still isn't likely to push Fernando Rodney out of the closer role, where Rodney has flourished thus far. Lyon remains just a middle-relief option for Fantasy leagues that use them.
News: Tigers reliever Brandon Lyon blew his first save opportunity of the season Tuesday in Toronto and wound up taking the loss in the ninth inning. Adam Lind got the winning rally started with a one-out walk in the ninth inning after Lyon allowed the tying runs in the eighth. Pinch-runner Jose Bautista went to third on Scott Rolen's single to right and Lyle Overbay was walked intentionally to load the bases for Rod Barajas, who lofted a flyball into center field. Jose Bautista scored without a throw from Curtis Granderson.
Analysis: Lyon allowed three earned runs in an inning of work. He gave up three hits and walked two batters (one intentionally). The Tigers have not named an undisputed closer, but Jim Leyland said earlier in the week he would allow Fernando Rodney to take the ball with a lead in the ninth. He didn't get that chance Tuesday as Lyon coughed up the lead. This doesn't bode well for Lyon getting a shot at saves and makes him someone to avoid activating for now.
News: The Detroit News reports that Jim Leyland said Wednesday he would give RP Fernando Rodney the ball if the Tigers were up by one going into the ninth inning.
Analysis: Brandon Lyon seemed to have the closer's job wrapped up this spring, but his numbers (0-3, 5.73) weren't exactly confidence-building. But then again, neither were Rodney's (0-2, 7.00). Leyland obviously just has more faith in Rodney right now, but you all know that could change in the span of a week or less. Rodney jumps above Lyon in the Fantasy rankings with this latest news, but you should only be relying on either of these guys in super-deep mixed leagues or AL-only formats as low-end No. 2 closers because of the shakiness of their roles.
News: Tigers RP Brandon Lyon and RP Fernando Rodney combined to give up three runs on four hits Friday as they blew Justin Verlander's seven shutout innings in a 3-2 defeat by the Braves. Rodney allowed two runs, one of them earned, in the eighth inning, before Lyon gave up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on two hits.
Analysis: Lyon has had an ugly spring so far, but Rodney hasn't been much better. Lyon saved 26 games for the Diamondbacks last year, but he lost his job down the stretch. He doesn't have the overpowering stuff of most closers, so think of him as just a last resort for saves on Draft Day. Rodney is only worth owning as a flier option in AL-only leagues, although if Lyon continues to struggle, Rodney's value could zoom upwards at some point early this season.
News: Tigers RP Brandon Lyon, expected to serve as the team's closer to begin the season, gave up home runs to four consecutive batters Monday against the Red Sox. He gave up just the four hits in one inning of work, recording one strikeout. He wasn't too troubled by the outburst, saying it was his pitching style to go right at batters. "I'm an aggressive pitcher," Lyons said. "I like to keep the ball over the plate. You have days like this sometimes when you're that way. Unfortunately, it went like this for me. But there'll be better days."
Analysis: Lyon has a 5.19 ERA this spring, giving up nearly two hits per inning pitched. Fortunately for him, his primary competition, Fernando Rodney, has had an equally poor spring. Lyon saved 26 games for the Diamondbacks last year, but he lost his job down the stretch. He doesn't have the overpowering stuff of most closers, so think of him as just a last resort for saves on Draft Day.
News: Tigers reliever Brandon Lyon pitched a shutout inning in his latest spring appearance Friday against Detroit. He continues to fight for the Tiger's closer spot.
Analysis: Lyon's ERA on the spring season is now at 1.17 as he is seeming more and more like a lock to win the closing job in Detroit out of spring camp. He has never been able to hold down the job in the past, though, including last year in Arizona, so consider him a last resort for saves in Fantasy.
News: Detroit RP Brandon Lyon, who is trying to lock down the closer's role with the Tigers, allowed a run on two hits in an exhibition game against the Mets on Friday.
Analysis: Lyon's ERA on the spring season is now at 1.59 as he is seeming more and more like a lock to win the closing job in Detroit out of spring camp. He has never been able to hold down the job in the past, though, including last year in Arizona, so consider him a last resort for saves in Fantasy.
News: Tigers RP Brandon Lyon, trying to hold off Fernando Rodney to secure the closer role, gave up two hits and an unearned run in one inning Monday at the Marlins. The run scored on a double by Dallas McPherson and gave the Marlins the lead, sticking Lyon with the loss.
Analysis: Lyon has a 1.93 ERA this spring and likely hasn't done anything to make the Tigers think they can't trust him as their closer. He has never been able to hold down the job in the past, though, including last year in Arizona, so consider him a last resort for saves in Fantasy.
News: Detroit RP Brandon Lyon gave up three hits and an earned run in 1 2//3 innings of work against the Yankees on Friday. He also struck out a batter in a performance that raised his ERA to 2.45 for the spring.
Analysis: Lyon was the closer for most of the season in Arizona last season and had mixed success and ultimately lost the job. Lyon is considered the frontrunner for the closer's job in Detroit, but he still needs to hold off Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya this spring. Lyon has plenty of closing experience with the Red Sox and Diamondbacks, but he lost both jobs because of ineffectiveness. If Lyon wins the job, he will deserve a look as a No. 2 closer in mixed leagues.
News: Tigers RP Brandon Lyon took to the mound during Saturday's spring game against the Mets and looked much better than in his first outing. He made quick work of the Mets in the fifth, allowing just one hit and no runs. Lyon allowed three unearned runs in his spring debut Wednesday against the Braves.
Analysis: Lyon is considered the frontrunner for the closer's job in Detroit, but he still needs to hold off Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya this spring. Lyon has plenty of closing experience with the Red Sox and Diamondbacks, but he lost both jobs because of ineffectiveness. If Lyon wins the job, he will deserve a look as a No. 2 closer in mixed leagues.
News: Tigers RP Brandon Lyon, competing for the closer role with Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya this spring, allowed three unearned runs on two hits and one walk in one inning of work Wednesday against the Braves.
Analysis: Obviously, this one outing won't make or break Lyon, but it doesn't look good. The right-hander had a career-high 26 saves for the Diamondbacks last season, but a late slide led to him losing his job. He had a 2.43 ERA before the All-Star break and an 8.46 ERA after, ballooning with a 12.27 mark in August. If Lyon wins the job, he will deserve a look as a No. 2 closer in mixed leagues.
News: The Tigers desperately needed to add a closer this winter to replace the retired Todd Jones. Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney, the relievers groomed to replace Jones, both failed to instill confidence because they were either hurt or ineffective last year. If Brandon Lyon isn't the answer, Fernando Rodney or Zumaya could conceivably become Detroit's closer this season, but the franchise couldn't count on either one of the pitchers who were key setup men during the 2006 AL Championship season. The Tigers had 28 blown saves last season, trailing only Seattle in the AL, with Rodney going 13-of-19 and Zumaya saving only one game in five chances as both had shoulder problems. Rodney has said he feels healthy and is determined to compete to be on the mound at the end of games. Zumaya declined to be interviewed Wednesday, for the third straight day, but seems to be throwing hard in workouts.
Analysis: Lyon had a career-high 26 saves for the Diamondbacks last season, but a late slide led to him losing his job. He had a 2.43 ERA before the All-Star break and an 8.46 ERA after, ballooning with a 12.27 ERA in August. If Lyon wins the job, he will deserve a look as a No. 2 closer in mixed leagues. Rodney would have similar value, while the lightning-armed Zumaya could be a top five closer if he is healthy and given the job.
News: The Tigers have improved their bullpen, signing free agent right-handed pitcher Brandon Lyon to a one-year contract. The Tigers announced the deal Saturday at TigerFest, a fan event at Comerica Park. Lyon has played for the Blue Jays, Red Sox and Diamondbacks, and has 51 career saves. "He was not promised the closer's job," Dombrowski said. "He thinks he's going to win the job and that's why he wanted to come here."
Analysis: Lyon, who had 26 saves for the Diamondbacks last season, will have a chance to replace the retired Todd Jones at the end of Detroit's games. He'll have to compete with Fernando Rodney for the job, though. If he wins, he would deserve a look as a No. 2 Fantasy closer on a possible contender, but keep in mind he has never held down a ninth-inning job for long.
News: Record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez and shortstops Rafael Furcal, Omar Vizquel and Edgar Renteria were among 19 players who filed for free agency Monday. Pitchers Brandon Lyon and Paul Byrd also joined the list. Of the 178 players potentially eligible for free agency, 149 have filed since the World Series ended last week.
Analysis: Lyon isn't likely to find a home as a closer, so consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Arizona RHP Brandon Lyon, who lost the closer's job Saturday, pitched a 1-2-3 seventh Sunday.
Analysis: Lyon, who is likely headed to free agency, is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men here on out.
News:Chad Qualls has replaced struggling Brandon Lyon as the Arizona closer as the Diamondbacks try to stay in the NL West race over the final two weeks of the season. Lyon understood the move, Melvin said. "All he wants to do is help the team win," the manager said. "In that respect, he took it like a pro."
Analysis: Lyon (2-5, 5.23) has an 11.57 ERA since the All-Star break, allowing 21 runs in 16 1/3 innings. He gave up two runs in the ninth in a 4-3 loss at San Francisco on Wednesday. Lyon came on in relief in the ninth Friday night against Cincinnati with a 3-0 lead and gave up two runs before Qualls replaced him. With runners at first and third, Qualls struck out Jerry Hairston Jr. to preserve Brandon Webb's 20th victory of the season. Lyon has 26 saves in 31 opportunities this season. He's now just a middle-relief option in leagues that use them.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon, who lost in his last appearance, nearly blew a save Friday against the Reds. He gave up four base hits, including a two-run single by pinch-hitter Jeff Keppinger, before manager Bob Melvin summoned Chad Qualls, who secured the save. "At that point, I had given (Lyon) enough rope, and I needed to go get him," Melvin said. Lyon also blew a save in a wrenching loss at San Francisco on Wednesday, and Melvin hinted he may make a switch at closer. "Tomorrow, we'll deal with some of the issues that we need to take care of," Melvin said.
Analysis: Lyon had only two saves in August -- largely due to his own struggles -- and he now has a 5.23 ERA. He probably deserves to lose his job, and Jon Rauch makes the most sense as his replacement considering he closed with the Nationals earlier this season. Whoever ends up closing in Arizona deserves to start as a No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: One day after losing to San Francisco in the ninth inning, the Diamondbacks let another game slip away in the final at-bat when Eugenio Velez hit a two-out, two-run triple off Arizona's Brandon Lyon to lift the Giants to a 4-3 win on Wednesday. Velez was down 0-2 to Lyon (2-5) when he drilled a fastball to the gap in right-center, scoring pinch-runner Ryan Rohlinger and Aaron Rowand as the afternoon crowd at AT&T Park roared. Lyon fell to 2-5 as he allowed three hits, a walk and two runs over 1 2/3 innings.
Analysis: Lyon had only two saves in August. He struggled some in his own right, but the Diamondbacks haven't offered as consistent opportunities as some contenders. Think of him as just a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon pitched the ninth inning Monday against the Cardinals for his 26th save in 31 chances. He allowed two hits and recorded one strikeout.
Analysis: Lyon had only two saves in August. He struggled some in his own right, but the Diamondbacks haven't offered as consistent opportunities as some contenders. Think of him as just a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon gave up only one hit in a scoreless inning of work Saturday against the Dodgers, recording one strikeout. He has recorded only two saves in August.
Analysis: Lyon has struggled some in his own right, but the Diamondbacks haven't offered as consistent opportunities as some contenders. Think of him as just a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:The Arizona Republic reports that despite Brandon Lyon's recent struggles the Diamondbacks have no intentions to remove him from their closer position. Lyon is struggling, but he hasn't struggled in save situations, and manager Bob Melvin said he isn't going to demote his closer until that happens. "I think he's earned the right to go out there in a save situation, if indeed he was to lose his job for a period of time," Melvin said.
Analysis: Lyon has given up 10 earned runs in his past 5 1/3 innings, but none of the damage has come in a save situation and none has directly cost the Diamondbacks a game. Lyon, whose ERA has shot up to 4.96, is 25 for 30 in save situations this season and at one point had a 25-inning scoreless streak, but his recent struggles have many calling for a new closer. Don't think of him as more than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Arizona closer Brandon Lyon needed to get some work in since he hadn't pitched since Aug. 21 against the Padres. It didn't turn out so well Sunday against the Marlins. In a non-save situation, Lyon allowed three hits and two runs in an inning.
Analysis: Lyon remains the D-Backs closer but Jon Rauch is hot on his heels and the fact that Lyon has now allowed hits and runs in three straight outings is not a good case to keep your job. The closer's role could be wrestled from Lyon any day now so continue to keep watch on the situation. Because of his job insecurity don't think of him as more than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon struggled in a non-save situation for the second time this week Thursday against the Padres. He allowed a run on two hits.
Analysis: Jon Rauch pitched the ninth inning the last time the Diamondbacks had a save situation, but Lyon remains the closer for now. Because of his job insecurity, though, don't think of him as more than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: RP Jon Rauch pitched the ninth inning during Wednesday's 8-6 win against the Padres, allowing Jody Gerut's two-out solo homer to right, for his 18th save and first since he was acquired by the Diamondbacks from the Washington Nationals on July 22. Manager Bob Melvin said Brandon Lyon, who allowed three runs in a non-save situation on Tuesday, was given a regular day off. "He will close tomorrow," Melvin said.
Analysis: Melvin has not lost confidence in his closer Lyon and has actually worked with him trying to tweak some of his pitches. Lyon has four pitches, which is usually a high number for a closer. Lyon does have a shorter leash with Rauch around, but still remains a viable No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Working with a four-run lead in a non-save situation Tuesday against the Padres, Brandon Lyon nearly blew the game. He recorded only one out, allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Tony A. Pena recorded the final two outs in the inning for his second save.
Analysis: Lyon wouldn't be the first closer to struggle in a non-save situation, but he has a shorter leash than most with Jon Rauch on the roster. His ERA rose to 4.60 with the performance, so consider him nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy closer.
News: Arizona closer Brandon Lyon pitched the ninth for his 25th save in 30 chances on Tuesday night in a win over the Rockies. He had one strikeout.
Analysis: Treat Lyon as a No. 2 Fantasy closer as he has to continually look over his shoulder with Jon Rauch now on the roster. Still, pitching for a contending team, he figures to get plenty of save opportunities down the stretch if he keeps the job.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon, working in a non-save situation Friday against the Braves, gave up three runs -- two earned -- on three hits and one walk. He has allowed five runs on eight hits in his last two outings, each lasting an inning.
Analysis: Lyon wasn't working in a save situation in his last outing either, so he, like many closers, might just have trouble concentrating when the game isn't on the line. Unfortunately, he has to look over his shoulder now for Jon Rauch. Treat Lyon as a No. 2 Fantasy closer.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon allowed a leadoff single in the ninth inning of a one-run game Friday at the Dodgers, but he retired the next three batters for his 24th save. He now has four saves in the last seven days.
Analysis: The Diamondbacks haven't given Lyon many save opportunities since April, but they're giving them to him now. Get him active as a No. 2 Fantasy closer.
News: Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon blanked the Dodgers in the ninth inning to earn his 23rd save in 28 chances during a 2-1 win Thursday. Lyon worked around a two-out single to Casey Blake for his third save since Saturday. He struck out one.
Analysis: Lyon has closed out his last three games with scoreless outings since allowing seven runs during a two-outing span from July 19-20. He also has five strikeouts in his last three innings. Arizona acquired Jon Rauch from Washington as insurance just in case Lyon falters down the stretch. It has really motivated the right-hander and he remains a decent No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth inning during Tuesday's 3-0 win against the Padres for his 22nd save in 27 chances. He needed just 11 pitches to retire the side, which included strikeouts of Edgar V. Gonzalez and Adrian Gonzalez.
Analysis: Lyon has closed out his last two games with scoreless outings since allowing seven runs during a two-outing span from July 19-20. He also has four strikeouts in his last two innings. Arizona acquired Jon Rauch from Washington as insurance just in case Lyon falters down the stretch. It has really motivated the right-hander and he remains a decent No. 2 Fantasy RP.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon, who gave up five runs in a loss against the Dodgers in his last outing, recovered to record his 21st save Saturday at San Francisco. He allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts in one scoreless inning.
Analysis: Lyon better watch out because the Diamondbacks now have Jon Rauch, who could easily take his place if the troubles continue. Because Lyon got eight of his 21 saves in April, he's no more than a No. 2 Fantasy closer.
News: Diamondbacks RP Chad Qualls came on in the ninth inning Monday against the Cubs to get his second save in eight tries during a 2-0 win. It wasn't easy, though. Qualls walked Ryan Theriot, then first baseman Chad Tracy bobbled pinch-hitter Kosuke Fukudome's grounder. Reed Johnson grounded into a double play, then Aramis Ramirez bounced out to second to end it. The shaky finish came one day after Arizona closer Brandon Lyon gave up five ninth-inning runs in a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Analysis: The Diamondbacks were not auditioning Qualls to replace Lyon, but simply gave their closer the night off after working the first three games coming off the All-Star break. Lyon has allowed seven runs in his last two outings, but is not in jeopardy of losing his job. He remains a high-end Fantasy RP. Qualls will get the occasional save, but primarily remains a Fantasy middle reliever.
News:Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks had staked Brandon Lyon to a three-run lead, but the Diamondbacks closer, pitching in his third straight game, couldn't hold it during a 6-5 loss to the Dodgers Sunday. Nomar Garciaparra doubled and James Loney singled to open the ninth against Lyon. Andruw Jones hit what could have been a double-play grounder to Stephen Drew, but the shortstop bobbled the ball and had to throw to first for the out as Garciaparra scored. "If we turn that it's potentially a different outcome," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. Lyon retired Blake DeWitt on a grounder to short for the second out. But Andy LaRoche singled to right, scoring Loney to make it 4-3, and Kemp doubled to center to score pinch runner Pablo Ozuna and tie the game. Ethier followed with a triple high off the center-field wall, scoring Kemp to give the Dodgers their first lead. Russell Martin singled to center for a two-run Dodgers lead.
Analysis: Lyon (2-4) lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing a career-worst five runs and five hits for his fifth blown save. On Saturday, he allowed two runs and three hits in an inning, but got the save. "My arm felt great today," Lyon said. "It was just a matter of not making pitches when I needed to. The last couple of outings I didn't do a very good job out there. I just need to do a better job of making pitches." Lyon is now 2-4 and has five blown saves this season. Lyon has just one save since July 9 and the Diamondbacks have struggled in the last few months for wins. Lyon has been a steady option for Arizona until recently and is a borderline No. 1 Fantasy RP at this time.

News: Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon managed to escape a ninth-inning jam Sunday against the Padres and preserve a 3-2 win for his 18th save. Adrian Gonzalez led off the ninth with a single and Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a tailing line drive to right that bounced off the glove of a diving Justin Upton. Gonzalez initially stopped at third but both runners advanced when Upton's throw tipped off the top of both Orlando Hudson and Chad Tracy's gloves, making it 3-2. But Lyon struck out Chase Headley and retired Khalil Greene and Luis Rodriguez on consecutive grounders to second for his first save since June 30.
Analysis: Lyon has allowed three earned runs in his last four outings, but he has been a pretty stable arm for the most part in 2008. Arizona should contend in the NL down the stretch and Lyon will likely get plenty of saves chances in the second half. He remains a high-end Fantasy RP.

News:Brandon Lyon (2-2) ended a career-high 15 consecutive outings without a blown save. Sunday was the first time since April 2 against Cincinnati he failed in a save opportunity. "It's a tough one, especially going home, it's a long flight," Lyon said. "The way we played this series we should have come out with at least two out of three. It's kind of the way things are going right now, when one thing is not going good things keep slipping."
Analysis: You still cannot fill up one hand counting Lyon's bad outings so far this season. Continue to consider him a solid start at the closer position in any Fantasy format. The D-Backs are struggling mightily, but they are still in first place and they are due to get hot and hand Lyon a consistent number of save opportunities in the near future.

News: The Arizona Republic reports that Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin hasn't been shocked by the solid start closer Brandon Lyon is off to in 2008. "He's the type of guy that you can't tell whether he's up two runs or down two runs, whether he's pitching well or struggling a little bit," Melvin said. "Some guys rely on the emotional aspect, with a lot of gyrations or whatever, but Brandon's the opposite. He's got ice water in his veins. It doesn't surprise me the type of start he's had."

Analysis: Lyon hasn't exactly dazzled in his first two weeks on the job, but he has the support of manager Bob Melvin. If he can figure out the role, he might be a worthwhile Fantasy closer, pitching for a contender like the Diamondbacks. Treat him as a No. 2 option right now.

Analysis: Manager Bob Melvin came out on Tuesday and said he still had confidence in Lyon, and the closer took advantage of a great chance Wednesday to prove his manager right. Continue to think of him as a low-end No. 2 closer for now until he can get a little more consistent.
News: According to the Arizona Republic, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin is not going to give up on closer Brandon Lyon this early in the season. "We have confidence in him," Melvin said. "A couple of outings isn't going to take away from the fact that this is a guy we expect to pitch the ninth inning for us. That's the way it remains right now." Lyon has two blown saves in his last three outings.
Analysis: Melvin can say what he likes, but a couple of more bad games from Lyon and he will start thinking about a switch. Tony A. Pena and Chad Qualls, who got the save Sunday, wait in the wings. Think of Lyon as a low-end No. 2 RP in Fantasy.
News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon blew his second save of the season already Sunday at Colorado, serving up a solo home run to Matt Holliday. He allowed two hits total, but he did eventually earn the win.
Analysis: Lyon has one save in three opportunities and an ERA of 12.00. Lyon can't afford many slip ups as Tony A. Pena and Chad Qualls, who got the save Sunday, wait in the wings. Think of him as a low-end No. 2 RP in Fantasy.

News: Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon, awarded the job before spring training even began, recorded his first save of the season in the opener Monday at the Reds. He pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.
Analysis: So far, so good for Lyon, who posted a 13.50 ERA this spring. He doesn't have extensive experience closing, though, and isn't the most shutdown of relievers, so continue to think of him as more of a No. 2 RP for Fantasy purposes.
News: The Arizona Republic reports that Brandon Lyon has had two sharp bullpen sessions in recent days and his fastball command has made progress. He struck out two and allowed an unearned run on two hits in one inning Thursday.
Analysis: Lyon entered the game having allowed 12 runs in 6 2/3 innings this spring. He's the closer for the D-Backs, a solid team with an excellent rotation, but if he falters, they might turn to setup man Tony A. Pena. For now, treat Lyon as a No. 2 or 3 closer.
News: Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon, named the team's closer before the exhibition season began, gave up five runs on five hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning Saturday against the Rockies, striking out one. He has an ERA of 16.20 this spring.
Analysis: Lyon has allowed two runs or more in four of his seven appearances this spring. He probably doesn't have the longest leash due to his inexperience in the role, and Fantasy owners can't like the way he's come out of the gate this spring. Draft him as no more than a high-risk No. 3 closer.
News: Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon, named the team's closer before the exhibition season began, allowed four hits and three runs in one inning of work Friday at the Giants. He now has an ERA of 12.60.
Analysis: Even though the Diamondbacks already named Lyon their closer, he probably won't have the longest leash in the world, given his lack of experience in the role. Don't worry about him yet, but continue to monitor his performances this spring. He is still worth a look as a No. 2 closer in mixed leagues.

Even though the Diamondbacks already named Lyon their closer, he probably won't have the longest leash in the world, given his lack of experience in the role. Don't worry about him yet, but continue to monitor his performances this spring. He is still worth a look as a No. 2 closer in mixed leagues.
News: Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon, named the team's closer going in to spring training, allowed two runs and four hits in one inning of work Saturday against the White Sox.
Analysis: Even though the Diamondbacks already named Lyon their closer, he probably won't have the longest leash in the world, given his lack of experience in the role. Don't worry about him yet, but continue to monitor his performances this spring.
News: RHP Brandon Lyon, recently named the Diamondbacks closer, has not pitched more than three days in a row since 2005, when he began the season as the closer. He suffered a right elbow injury six weeks into that season after saving 13 of 14 chances. According to The Sports Xchange, Lyon hit 95 mph on the radar gun in the second half of last season, convincing manager Bob Melvin that his arm strength had returned and the elbow was no longer an issue.
Analysis: Melvin also thinks Lyon has the mental makeup for the role of closer. "One runs on emotion, the other just the opposite," Melvin said, comparing Lyon to former closer Jose Valverde. "(Lyon) has a poker face. Nothing seems to bother him. I have a lot of confidence in Brandon. He's done it successfully. Each year he has shown we can use him a little more." Now that he is closing for a contender, consider Lyon a No. 2 Fantasy closer in mixed league formats.
News:Brandon Lyon was picked Wednesday to replace Jose Valverde as the Arizona Diamondbacks' closer. The 28-year-old right-hander had 14 saves in 2005 and two in 2007, when he spent most of the season as Valverde's eighth-inning setup man. Lyon went 6-4 with a 2.68 ERA in 73 appearances last year. "It's a different mindset closing," manager Bob Melvin said in a telephone interview. "Brandon has shown he can do it." Valverde was traded to Houston after saving a major league-high 47 games last year for the NL West champions. Lyon was picked over right-hander Tony Pena, a key part of the bullpen last season, and Chad Qualls, acquired from Houston in the Valverde trade.
Analysis: Melvin said he announced the move on Wednesday because he didn't want any uncertainty over roles heading into spring training, which opens next week in Tucson. "Defined roles are very, very important in the bullpen," he said. "We saw that last year." Lyon was last a full-time closer in 2005 with the Diamondbacks, but he also has some experience closing games for the Red Sox in 2003. He has had some arm troubles in the past, but those problems are behind him. Now that he is closing for a contender, consider Lyon a No. 2 Fantasy closer in mixed league formats.
News: The Diamondbacks signed RHP Chad Qualls, RHP Brandon Lyon, 2B Chris Burke, 2B Orlando Hudson and C Chris Snyder to one-year contracts Friday.
Analysis: Lyon has a chance to beat out Tony Pena to be the D-Backs closer, which makes him a sleeper in deeper leagues, while Qualls is nothing more than a middle reliever. Hudson is a solid option in the latter rounds at second base, while Snyder has outstanding potential for a big breakthrough at age 27. Burke has potential, too, but he is nothing more than a reserve for the D-Backs and deeper NL-only leagues on Draft Day.
News: RPs Brandon Lyon and Tony Pena are the most likely successors in the competition to replace Jose Valverde as the Diamondbacks' closer, according to The Sports Xchange. "We still haven't ironed it out," manager Bob Melvin said. "Both these guys can do it, and we're comfortable with both of them. At some point in time entering spring training, we'll settle on one of them."
Analysis: Pena has better stuff and upside, but Lyon has spent some time in the role before, saving 14 games in 2005. We consider Pena the favorite to run away with the job, but Fantasy owners will obviously have to monitor this situation throughout the spring. The guy who wins the role will be the one you want in Fantasy.
News: RHP Jose Valverde was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Astros for 2B Chris Burke and RHPs Chad Qualls and Juan Gutierrez. Up-and-comer Tony A. Pena or veteran Brandon Lyon figure to be in line to close for the D-Backs, barring another trade.
Analysis: Lyon has proven to be a solid reliever for the D-Backs the past couple of years. His prior experience as a closer will help his case for that job, but the D-Backs figure to keep him slotted as a setup man going into spring. Consider him an intriguing middle reliever in leagues that use them and a potential sleeper for save scraps.
News: RHP Tony Pena allowed one hit in one inning against Washington Friday.
Analysis: RHP Brandon Lyon and Pena each has 24 "holds," tied for fourth in the majors. Both are worth using in NL-only leagues that use middle relievers.
News: Brandon Lyon pitched the eighth inning and Jose Valverde came on in the ninth for his major league-leading 35th save in 40 chances on Thursday against the Pirates.
Analysis: Lyon remains a pretty valuable setup man and is worth a look in deeper NL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle relievers.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Brandon Lyon's 44 career holds with the Diamondbacks is tied for first on the club's all-time list with Mike Koplove. Lyon has 20 holds this season, five shy of the team record set by Luis Vizcaino a year ago.
Analysis: Lyon is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: Brandon Lyon (5-2) pitched the 10th inning of Tuesday's game against the Devil Rays, working a perfect frame with a strikeout.
Analysis: Despite the solid performance, Lyon is only worth a look in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle relievers.
News: Brandon Lyon allowed a single and struck out two in the eighth inning on Wednesday against the Giants, then Jose Valverde finished for his 21st save in 23 chances.
Analysis: Despite the scoreless inning, Lyon is still only worth a look in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues and Rotisserie formats for help in the ERA and WHIP categories.
News: Rich Aurilia hit a one-out double in the 10th off Brandon Lyon (4-2), who hustled to cover third when Mark Reynolds ran out to retrieve the ball on a single to left by Ray Durham that Eric Byrnes couldn't keep in his glove on a diving attempt. Lyon got Aurilia at third and Bengie Molina flied out to center to end the threat. "Lyon makes a heck of a play. One, to be there. Two, to keep him off the base," manager Bob Melvin said. "To me, it looked like he never touched the base, he flipped over his shoulder and never got on third base." Giants manager Bruce Bochy disagreed, and argued for several minutes with the umpires. "It's amazing they got him out," Bochy said. "The ball kicked away. There was nobody at third for a while. It was a botched up play that came up great on their side."
Analysis: Lyon is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men. Jose Valverde looks safe as the closer for now.
News: Arizona manager Bob Melvin pulled Jose Valverde for Brandon Lyon in Monday's save chance at Philadelphia. Lyon then retired pinch-hitter Rod Barajas for his second save. "He's been unbelievable all year," Melvin said of Valverde, who has 18 saves. "They had some good at-bats off him. It's going to happen."
Analysis: Despite the save on Monday, Lyon is only worth a look in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues for the occasional chance.
News: Troy Tulowitzki hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to help the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks 3-1 on Tuesday night. Garrett Atkins drew a leadoff walk against Brandon Lyon (3-2) in the ninth and was replaced by pinch-runner Jamey Carroll. Tulowitzki squared to bunt as Lyon missed the strike zone on his first three pitches. Tulowitzki made contact on the 3-1 pitch but bunted the ball foul before coming back on the 3-2 pitch to hit a line drive just inside the right-field line. "I had one pitch to bunt and missed it," Tulowitzki said. "On 3-2 I was looking for a pitch to drive and I got it. I was just looking for one in the strike zone and I got a good swing on it."
Analysis: Tulowitzki later scored. "He competes so well and has got great drive," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle. "You expect that of players up here, but he has a special want to. He never feels he's out of an at-bat, never feels he's out of a play in the field." Consider the rookie shortstop a solid start in deeper leagues. He might even get hot enough to trust regularly in mixed leagues in the second half. He's one of the future stars at his position. Lyon is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: Brandon Lyon didn't allow a runner in his only inning against the Pirates on Sunday. He has allowed only two ER in the month of May, bringing his ERA all the way down to 1.35 this season.

Lyon was called on to close the game because Jose Valverde had pitched the past two games. However, Lyon beared down and worked a scoreless frame for his first save of the season.
Analysis: Valverde will be back for the Diamondbacks on Monday at L.A. Dodgers if the club needs a save, so Lyon will continue to have minimal Fantasy appeal. He is only worth a look in the deepest of NL-only formats unless Valverde suffers a long-term injury.
News: Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon earned his second relief win of the season during Saturday's 5-4 win over the Rockies. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing just a hit. He has allowed just one earned run in six relief innings this season.

Analysis: Lyon is a solid option in larger NL-only Fantasy leagues which use true middle relievers.
News: According to MLB.com, the Diamondbacks have named Brandon Lyon as the team's top setup man. Jose Valverde will begin the season as the team's closer. "I look to Brandon Lyon to be our eighth-inning game," manager Bob Melvin said. "I may use him at times in the seventh because he can throw his breaking ball over and go hard and soft. If I feel like my tougher outs are coming in the seventh, I may pitch him in the seventh, but the way I look at it right now, he's our No. 1 setup guy."
Analysis: Lyon was 2-4 with a 3.89 ERA in a career-high 68 games last season. Consider him a middle reliever on Draft Day for the deepest Fantasy leagues that use true middle men. With a shaky option at closer, Lyon could be a factor for saves at some point in 2007, though.
News: Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Lyon is seen as the most logical pitcher to replace Luis Vizcaino as the Diamondbacks' primary setup man to closer Jose Valverde. Vizcaino, who was dealt to the Yankees in the trade that brought Randy Johnson back to Arizona, was the club's best reliever when it came to retiring both left- and right-handed hitters. Lyon has some history there, too, and although the Diamondbacks likely will also use RHPs Tony Pena and Brandon Medders late in games, Lyon likely will get the lion's share of eighth-inning work.
Analysis: Lyon was 2-4 with a 3.89 ERA in a career-high 68 games last season. Consider him a middle reliever on Draft Day for the deepest Fantasy leagues that use true middle men. With shaky options at closer, Jose Valverde and then perhaps Jorge Julio, Lyon could be a factor for saves at some point in 2007, though.

News: Brandon Medders, Luis Vizcaino, Brandon Lyon and Jorge Julio each pitched an inning of relief for the Diamondbacks, with Julio recording the final three outs for his 16th save in 19 opportunities. Analysis: Lyon is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of Rotisserie leagues that use true middle men.
News: Brandon Lyon has a 4.61 ERA in 41 innings of relief this season for the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Lyon continues to see action in the middle innings, while Jorge Julio closes games for Arizona. Cut Lyon from all formats since he really has no chance to close anytime soon.
News: RHP Brandon Lyon, who allowed four runs in the ninth inning of Tuesday's loss to the Mariners, rebounded in his appearance Thursday night. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning in advance of RHP Jorge Julio's ninth-inning blown save.

News: Brandon Lyon has allowed five earned runs in his past four appearances (11.25 ERA) for Arizona.
Analysis: Lyon is no longer worth holding onto in Fantasy formats since he's been shaky on the mound and Jorge Julio and Jose Valverde go back and forth in the closer's spot..
News: RHP Brandon Lyon allowed a home run to the Reds' Scott Hatteberg, but it was only the second home run Lyon has yielded this season.
Analysis: Lyon is a solid setup man in NL-only Fantasy leagues and he is potential insurance in case Jose Valverde implodes or gets injured.
News: Json Bay's homer leading off the eighth, his 12th of the season, was a 418-foot opposite-field homer to right off reliever Brandon Lyon. Lyon still managed to record his 10th hold, though.
Analysis: Lyon is a solid setup man in Fantasy leagues, despite the mistake to Bay and his struggles of late (6.00 ERA in May after 1.69 in April). Jose Valverde has taking the reins as closer, but Lyon is a potential insurance policy down the road.
News: RHP Brandon Lyon has limited left-handed hitters to a .050 batting average (1 for 20) with two walks and three strikeouts.
Analysis: Lyon has a 1.84 ERA, allowing three earned runs over 14 2/3 innings. He's a pretty decent option in leagues that use multiple middle relievers.
News: Arizona RHP Brandon Lyon hasn't allowed a hit in eight of his nine appearances this season. He has a 1.04 ERA with six strikeouts.
Analysis: If your league requires middle relievers, Lyon might not be a bad option at this point. Otherwise, don't add him to your roster.
News: Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Tuesday night's win over the Giants to earn his first victory if the season.
Analysis: Lyon had 14 saves last season for Arizona, but currently the closer's job belongs to Jose Valverde. He's a decent option for leagues that require relief pitchers and he may pick up some saves in time.
News: In Arizona, Jose Valverde is the closer, and Melvin said four others -- Jason Grimsley, Luis Vizcaino, Brandon Lyon and Brandon Medders -- are all in the running for setup duties. With an expected 12-man pitching staff, that leaves two spots open in the 'pen, and one of them is almost certain to go to a left-hander, most likely Terry Mulholland, with Felix Heredia and Randy Choate also in the mix.
Analysis: Lyon had a nice early run as the D-Backs' closer before having his elbow give out on him again. That, coupled with Jose Valverde's re-emergence in the closer's role, will keep Lyon to being a middle reliever in 2006 and nothing more than a flier in the deepest of NL-only leagues. In CBS SportsLine.com's NL-only experts 5x5 Rotisserie draft, Lyon was selected in the 18th round (207th overall).

News: Brandon Lyon pitched the ninth for his 14th save Thursday, allowing just Dioner Navarro's third homer.
Analysis: Lyon lost his closer's role to Jose Valverde late this season after he struggled to get over elbow woes. He might compete for the job with Valverde for the nod next spring, so consider both players risks as keepers at this point.
News: Former closer Brandon Lyon was leading the NL in saves when he strained his right elbow. But since his return from the DL on Aug. 13, Lyon has a 22.09 ERA, allowing 10 hits and nine runs in 3 2/3 innings, including allowing back-to-back homers in one inning Sunday. Manager Bob Melvin believes Lyon's scuffling is part of his adjustment to losing the closer's role to Jose Valverde.
Analysis: Lyon is nothing more than a flier in NL-only leagues at this point. He is no certainty to right himself before the end of the season, and Valverde has been lights out as the closer of late.
News: Since returning from a strained right elbow, Brandon Lyon has yielded six hits and five runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Analysis: Lyon's return to the closers role is going to be delayed for two reasons: 1. He is stinking up the joint. 2. Jose Valverde has reclaimed the job and has been lights out. Lyon still could get some save chances in September, but it appears the D-Backs will ride Valverde's capable shoulders for now.
News: Brandon Lyon, who had been out since May 13 with a strained right elbow, was activated before Saturday's game at Atlanta. Lyon gave up two runs and three hits in the eighth inning.
Analysis: Lyon is expected to take over the closer's role soon from Jose Valverde, so don't let this bad outing turn your head.
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow) worked a perfect inning in a rehab start on Thursday for Triple-A Tucson and he will pitch again on Sunday against New Orleans.
Analysis: Lyon is expected to see a few more appearances with Tucson, likely getting a test in back-to-back games before he is activated from the 15-day disabled list. Manager Bob Melvin has said he will be placed right back into the closer's role upon his return, decreasing Brian Bruney's Fantasy value significantly.
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow) will pitch in a simulated game on Monday.
Analysis: Barring any setbacks, Lyon will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson. Keep him reserved until he is officially activated and able to prove his health.
News: On Monday, RHP Brandon Lyon had what Melvin described as his best bullpen session since he strained his pitching elbow in mid-May. After one more side session, Lyon could be ready for a rehab assignment.
Analysis: Lyon reportedly will be the closer immediately upon his return, which looks like August 1 at this point. Keep him reserve for Fantasy Week 17 (July 25-31), but he could return to active lineups in Week 18 (Aug. 1-7).
News: The Arizona Republic reports Brandon Lyon (elbow) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session on Saturday and is getting closer to a rehab assignment in the minors.
Analysis: Lyon might be able to return in early August and manager told the Republic that he will return to the closer's role as soon as he is ready and Brian Bruney will return to a setup role.
News: The Diamondbacks have pushed back Brandon Lyon's (elbow) next scheduled bullpen session from Friday to Saturday as a precaution due to flexor mass stiffness, according to the East Valley Tribune.
Analysis: Lyon is expected to start a rehab assignment during the All-Star break and potentially return to the team within a few weeks.
News: Manager Bob Melvin said two bullpen mainstays on the DL -- RHPs Brandon Lyon and Oscar Villarreal -- might return around July 22. Lyon (elbow strain), the injured closer, will throw off a mound for the third time Wednesday, getting ready for a rehabilitation assignment, and Villarreal's strained rotator cuff has improved, but his return was delayed by complications from a kidney stone that required an angiogram last week. "As far as the timetable goes, I'm not sure with him, but it could be similar as far as when both those guys come back," Melvin said.
Analysis: Lyon will begin a rehab assignment shortly. He cannot come back quick enough to help out the beleaguered Arizona bullpen. Fantasy owners might be able to return him their lineup for Week 17 (July 25-Aug. 1).
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow) threw from a mound on Monday for the second time and manager Bob Melvin said he is nearing a rehab assignment.
Analysis: Lyon will likely be sent out shortly after the All-Star break and might be back in late July. He cannot come back quick enough to help out the beleaguered Arizona bullpen, especially after Greg Aquino imploded in Monday's game to give up four runs in only one-third of an inning.
News: RHP Brandon Lyon threw off a mound Saturday for the first time since straining his right elbow May 13. Lyon, who had a big-league-leading 13 saves when he was injured, threw 20 pitches -- all fastballs. He'll probably throw again Monday or Tuesday and the Diamondbacks hope he'll be able to begin a minor-league rehab assignment within two weeks.
Analysis: Consider Lyon out until after the All-Star break at least at this point. He will not return to the big leagues after a rehab assignment. That means August is a more likely return date.
News: Closer Brandon Lyon played catch again Wednesday and is expected to have a bullpen session this weekend, when the team is in Los Angeles. Lyon has been sidelined since May 13 with a right elbow strain.
Analysis: Lyon should be on track for a post-All-Star break return. He was off to a great start as the team's closer and will immediately resume that role unless they trade for a viable replacement in the next two weeks, which is a possibility.
News: Closer Brandon Lyon threw for 10 minutes at 120 feet. Trainer Paul Lessard said Lyon would throw at that distance several more times and, if all goes well, throw a bullpen session near the end of the week. Lyon went on the DL on May 13 after straining his right elbow.
Analysis: Lyon should be on track for a post-All-Star break return. He was off to a great start as the team's closer and will immediately resume that role unless they trade for a viable replacement in the next two weeks, which is a possibility.
News: The Diamondbacks transferred Brandon Lyon (elbow) from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list on Sunday.
Analysis: Lyon said he will start a tossing program during the team's 10-game road trip, but he will not be back until after the All-Star break now.
News: A second opinion from Los Angeles Angels team doctor Lewis Yocum confirmed that closer Brandon Lyon will not require elbow surgery. Lyon says doctors believe rest will cure the strained ligament.
Analysis: Lyon plans not throwing for 10 days, then he will be re-evaluated. His return is at least 3 1/2 weeks away.
News: Brandon Lyon said Friday that doctors believe rest, not surgery, is what is needed for his injured right elbow. Lyon said a second opinion from Los Angeles Angels doctor Lewis Yocum confirmed what Diamondbacks team doctor Michael Lee had believed, the "irregularities" in Lyon's elbow would not require reconstructive surgery. "Dr. Yocum kind of reassured me that right now it's nothing too take too seriously," Lyon said, "just take a rest right now and let Mother Nature take over and see how I feel in 10 days."
Analysis: According to what Lee told Lyon, the most optimistic scenario for the closer's return to the Diamondbacks would be 3 1/2 weeks. "I think it's more of a strain with a little bit of tendinitis, too," Lyon said. "What actually had us do the MRI was the tendinitis. If I never had the tendinitis, they might not even has known this was there. I think we caught it at the right time, if it was really a problem."
News: Lyon's elbow has irregularitiesCloser Brandon Lyon, whose 13 saves led the National League before he went on the DL retroactive to May 13 with a right elbow strain, had an MRI Wednesday. Team Dr. Michael Lee said he found irregularities in the mid-portion of the ulnar collateral ligament and would seek a second opinion before deciding on a course of treatment.
Analysis: Lyon is replaced as the D-Backs' closer by Brian Bruney temporarily. Greg Aquino (ulnar) will take the job back when he returns from injury.
News: The Arizona Republic reports an MRI on Brandon Lyon's right elbow was inconclusive, and the injured closer will undergo further tests today, according to team physician Michael Lee. Lyon, on the disabled list with a right elbow strain, said the MRI was to allay concerns over the condition of his elbow, on which he had ulnar nerve transposition surgery last year.
Analysis: Lyon and Lee are confident his current injury is a muscle injury and unrelated to the nerve. "(The tests) are just a little bit more information for us to be on the safe side," Lee said. Lyon, who played catch again Tuesday, is eligible to be activated from the disabled list Saturday, and he said a return then is plausible.
News: The Diamondbacks placed Brandon Lyon on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday due to a mild case of tendinitis in his right elbow. "This will give us time to make sure he's 100 percent," manager Bob Melvin said.
Analysis: Lyon is eligible to return on May 28. Until then, Brian Bruney will continue to see save opportunities in his absence.
News: Manager Bob Melvin would like to find another chance to rest promising closer Brandon Lyon, who had 13 saves entering Tuesday, because he had ulnar nerve transposition surgery last year. Lyon was held out of Arizona's last three games after pitching in three consecutive games last week. "It's nothing we're very concerned about," Melvin said. "But running him out there as much as we have, we really want to make sure we don't tax him too much. This is a guy we want to be careful with."
Analysis: Lyon has been a pleasant surprise as a Fantasy closer this season. The fact the D-Backs won't overwork him is a position sign, too, that they're committed to staying with him in that role long term. Keep him active in all leagues and don't stress when Brian Bruney, Jose Valverde or whomever gets a spot save.
News: Lyon was rested on Sunday due to tendinitis in his right elbow. He experienced some soreness after working in three consecutive games from Tuesday through Thursday.
Analysis: The team does not feel the injury is significant, so it appears safe to keep him in the active Fantasy lineup. Consider him day to day.
News: With 10 saves in a row, RHP Brandon Lyon has tied Matt Mantei, Byung-Hyun Kim and Greg Aquino for the fourth-longest save streak in franchise history. Gregg Olson's 22 in 1998 is the club record, and Mantei had other streaks of 14 and 12 saves. Lyon, who got into 21 games with Toronto in 2001-02, came to Arizona from Boston in the Curt Schilling trade and missed last season after having nerve-transposition surgery in March 2004.
Analysis: "After four or five games you could certainly see his stuff," manager Bob Melvin said about making Lyon his closer this spring. "It kind of equates to where he is right now." Lyon has been a great find for Fantasy leaguers, posting a league-high saves total for the vastly improved D-Backs.
News: RHP Brandon Lyon's 10 saves already rank him sixth on Arizona's franchise list.
Analysis: Quite an accomplishment for a month's work. Greg Aquino or Jose Valverde might still sneak up to be the closer at some point, but Lyon owners should ride the wave right now and keep him active in Fantasy lineups.
News: The Arizona Republic reports that Brandon Lyon will likely stay in the closer's role once Greg Aquino returns from the 15-day disabled list next month. "I know Brandon will have it until we get farther along with Aquino," said manager Bob Melvin. "But certainly with what he's done so far, there's no justifying taking him out of the closer's role. He's been that good."
Analysis: Lyon leads the league in saves and is looking like one of the top free-agent pickups of the Fantasy season so far.
News: Brandon Lyon was not used to save the game Wednesday night as Javier Lopez was brought in by manager Bob Melvin.
Analysis: This is nothing to be alarmed about. The major-league saves leader is coming off a serious injury and Melvin has chosen to rest him even in save opportunities from time to time. By the end of the season, if he continues to prove healthy and effective, the D-Backs will release the chains on him and use him exclusively in save situations.
News: Manager Bob Melvin said he thought closer Brandon Lyon was a long shot to make the team at the start of spring training. "He certainly wasn't a lock," Melvin said. "Once we started games, it was apparent he was going to be somewhere." Lyon recorded his big-league-leading 10th save Tuesday night.
Analysis: Lyon has not displayed the best command and he does not have the hardest stuff, but he is leading the league with 10 saves and deserves to be active in all leagues during his hot streak. The D-Backs are a vastly improved club and will generate ample opportunities for him this season, assuming Greg Aquino, Jose Valverde or Brian Bruney don't eventually trump him as the best last-inning option.
News: Brandon Lyon tossed a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's game at L.A. Dodgers, allowing two hits, to pick up his 10th save of the season.
Analysis: Lyon has not displayed the best command and he does not have the hardest stuff, but he is leading the league with 10 saves.
News: Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect two-thirds of an inning in Monday's game at Los Angeles to nail down his ninth save of the season.
Analysis: Lyon has burst onto the scene to emerge as a must-start among Fantasy closers. If the Diamondbacks can continue to provide offense for his starters, there is no reason to believe the save chances will not continue for Lyon.
News: Brandon Lyon tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, in Sunday's game against the Padres.
Analysis: Lyon's eight saves leads the National League and is tops in the majors with Texas' Francisco Cordero.

Analysis: Lyon has not allowed an earned run in seven appearances this season, although he has allowed at least one hit in six of those seven games.
News: Brandon Lyon tossed a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's game against the Rockies to earn his fourth save of the season.
Analysis: Lyon has emerged as a decent Fantasy option in most leagues. He ranks first in the league in saves early on.
News: Brandon Lyon completed the shutout Monday night for his third save in four chances.
Analysis: Lyon is one of those surprise sources of saves, having been named the closer after Greg Aquino's poor spring cost him the job. Lyon should be owned in all NL-only leagues and could be a nice waiver claim in mixed leagues because of the emerging revamped D-Backs, who are clearly not a last-place club any more.
News: Brandon Lyon tossed a scoreless ninth inning in Sunday's game against Los Angeles to earn his second save of the young season.
Analysis: Lyon was spanked on Friday, but he rebounded nicely. More importantly, he still has the confidence of his manager Bob Melvin.
News: D-Backs anager Bob Melvin said seeing Brandon Lyon blow a four-run lead Friday night did not give him second thoughts about the young closer. "These things happen," Melvin said. "You know, you look at (Mariano) Rivera's situation (booed last week for blowing a save against Boston). It happens. Closers have to have short memories, and I think he's got the type of personality where he can put this behind him."
Analysis: Most of Lyon's Fantasy value is in those deeper NL-only leagues at this point. He is too risky to rely on in mixed leagues right now.
News: Brandon Lyon allowed three hits and four unearned runs in one inning for Friday's loss to the Dodgers.
Analysis: While Lyon got the loss and blown save, it was an error by Troy Glaus that accounted for the damage. Keep Lyon active in all formats.
News: Brandon Lyon earned his first save in Tuesday's game against the Cubs. He pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
Analysis: Lyon is a decent pickup in NL-only and Roto leagues if you want to get a jump on saves.
News: Brandon Lyon's terrific spring has won him the closer's role for the Diamondbacks over Greg Aquino, who had 16 saves in 19 opportunities as a rookie last year. Lyon, who missed all of last season after having surgery on the ulnar nerve in his elbow, had an 0.69 earned run average in 11 appearances this spring. The right-hander allowed one run and four hits in 13 innings, striking out 13 without a walk.
Analysis: The 25-year-old Lyon came to the Diamondbacks in the trade that sent Curt Schilling to Boston. "I'm excited to have the role, obviously," Lyon said. "Either way they would have went, I was happy to be here on the team. Any time you make an opening day roster after sitting a whole year, you feel good about the season." Activate Lyon in Week 1.
News: The Arizona Republic reports that Brandon Lyon might be named the team's closer by manager Bob Melvin. "He's probably the guy I'd look at the most and I think everyone would understand that with the spring he's had," Melvin said.
Analysis: Lyon has allowed only one run on four hits through 12 innings, with two saves. Apparently, he has overtaken Greg Aquino, but don't be surprised if they both share the job initially.
News: Diamondbacks reliever Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth Saturday for his first save of spring training, striking out two.
Analysis: The one-time regarded prospect is trying to make it back to the big leagues after an elbow injury derailed him last season. He is unlikely to be given enough of a role to have any Fantasy value in 2005.
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow) was able to pitch a perfect seventh inning in Wednesday's spring game against the Angels.
Analysis: Lyon is competing for a spot in the Arizona bullpen. He does not warrant any Fantasy consideration.
News: Brandon Lyon, the 25-year-old right-hander who came to Arizona as part of the deal that sent Curt Schilling to Boston, is impressing in camp in his return from ulnar nerve transposition surgery, according to the AP. He faced live hitters Thursday, displaying a "heavy sinker."
Analysis: Lyon might be in the mix for the D-Backs, but he is far too much of a risk right now to consider seriously. Track his progress once the games begin.
News: The East Valley Tribune reports Brandon Lyon (elbow) will play catch on Tuesday before determining if he will appear in a game before the season ends.
Analysis: Lyon hasn't pitched at all this year, following right elbow nerve transposition surgery. He has no Fantasy value.

News: The East Valley Tribune reports the Diamondbacks will try to get Brandon Lyon (elbow) in a game before the end of the season.
Analysis: Lyon threw about 45 pitches off a mound Wednesday and will need at least one more side session before he is game ready. He has no Fantasy value.

Analysis: Barring any setbacks, Lyon might be sent out on a rehab assignment in the next two weeks.
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow surgery) will throw two bullpen sessions this week before beginning a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Tucson on July 26, according to the East Valley Tribune.
Analysis: Lyon will serve as a middle reliever once healthy. He'll only be useful in Fantasy leagues if he can somehow figure into the team's closer-by-committee situation.
News: The Arizona Republic reports that Brandon Lyon (elbow) threw 25 pitches from the mound Wednesday. "My arm felt great, a lot better than I thought it was going to feel," he said. "If everything goes good in my workouts and side sessions, I'll probably go on a rehab assignment to Tucson after this homestand."
Analysis: Lyon might have some value in NL-only leagues if he can get healthy.
News: According to the East Valley Tribune, Brandon Lyon (elbow) is scheduled to play catch at 120 feet on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Analysis: Depending on how his elbow reacts to the throwing, Lyon could throw off a mound on Wednesday for the first time since spring training.
News: The Diamondbacks placed Brandon Lyon on the 60-day disabled list on Saturday after he underwent nerve transposition surgery last Wednesday.
Analysis: Lyon will be sidelined until at least late July.
News: The Arizona Republic says Brandon Lyon will undergo elbow surgery that will keep him on the DL up to four months.
Analysis: Lyon is concerned that he might have ligament damage, which would sideline him for the entire season. Lyon could have been useful in some NL-only leagues if he was healthy.
News: The Arizona Republic says Brandon Lyon (elbow) will undergo an MRI and a nerve conducting test early in the week. If the problem is nerve-related, he might need surgery.
Analysis: There is no current timetable for Lyon's return. He has minimal Fantasy value.
News: The East Valley Tribune notes Brandon Lyon (elbow) might not throw off a mound until late next week. "I might be a few days behind," Lyon said. "As far as getting ready for the season, it's not a big deal."
Analysis: Lyon has no Fantasy value.
News: Boston completed a trade with the Diamondbacks that sends Brandon Lyon, Casey Fossum, Jorge De La Rosa and a player to be named for Curt Schilling on Friday.
Analysis: Lyon should be useful in NL-only leagues next season for owners needing ERA and WHIP help. He is an injury risk though.
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow) was activated from the 15-day disabled list by Boston on Monday. Lyon hasn't pitched since July 20, which was before he was shipped to Pittsburgh, then returned.
Analysis: Lyon will be used as a middle reliever. He does not warrant much Fantasy consideration.
News: The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox do not plan on rushing Brandon Lyon (elbow) back to the team. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday. He will probably make a couple more rehab appearances before returning.
Analysis: Lyon's Fantasy owners have been anything but bored this season. He went from setup man to closer, to setup man, to being a Pirate, then injured, then back to being with the Red Sox. Lyon's Fantasy value is at its lowest opint of the season. Even after he returns, he has no chance of getting saves with Byung-Hyun Kim entrenched as the closer.
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow) threw off a mound before Tuesday's game, according to the Boston Herald. He is expected to throw again on Thursday with breaking balls included.
Analysis: Barring any setbacks, Lyon will join Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday to begin a rehab assignment. He is not expected to return until September.
News: Dr. James Andrews confirmed Monday that Brandon Lyon does not have a serious elbow problem, according to the Boston Herald. The right-hander had been the subject of debate in a recent trade with the Pirates, even being returned to the Red Sox on July 31. "(Andrews) cleared (Lyon) to throw and said that, overall, he's got a healthy elbow," general manager Theo Epstein said. "These things aren't black and white. There are shades of gray but (Andrews) said he didn't have any concerns about Brandon's elbow. It's nothing that a proper throwing program and progressive monitoring can't handle."
Analysis: Lyon will resume his throwing program on Tuesday and might be sent on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment in the near future. He should be ready to be activated on Sept. 1, when rosters expand. Lyon will pitch in middle relief once healthy, meaning he won't be useful in Fantasy leagues.
News: The Boston Herald reports that Brandon Lyon (elbow) will see Dr. James Andrews for a third and final opinion on the damage to his elbow.
Analysis: Lyon plans on beginning a throwing program after the visit. He plans on returning later this season to the Red Sox.
News: The Boston Herald reports that Brandon Lyon (elbow) will be sent down to the minors for a couple rehab starts before returning to the Red Sox.
Analysis: Lyon should be back in a couple weeks. As a middle reliever, he warrants little Fantasy consideration.
News: The Boston Red Sox reacquired Brandon Lyon from the Pittsburgh Pirates in Thursday's Jeff Suppan trade.
Analysis: This move essentially reverses the prior Lyon-for-Scott Sauerbeck deal, which was necessary after Lyon came down with an elbow injury. Once healthy, Lyon will return to his old middle relief job, one that doesn't offer much in the way of useful Fantasy stats.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Brandon Lyon (elbow) says he would like to play catch in the next three or four days, although he might not receive clearance to do so. He is doing some stretching and strengthening exercises in the meantime.
Analysis: Lyon is not a useful Fantasy pitcher when healthy since he'll be pitching middle relief for the Pirates.
News: Brandon Lyon (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He was acquired in a trade with Boston earlier in the week. The Red Sox are working to amend the trade with compensation.
Analysis: Lyon will work out of the Pirates' bullpen when he returns. He does not have much Fantasy value unless he gets save opportunities.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Pittsburgh might protest the trade of Scott Sauerbeck to Boston for Brandon Lyon because an MRI showed that Lyon had fraying in his pitching elbow. Pittsburgh is awaiting further examination results before deciding on what to do. Boston sent Lyon and minor-leaguer Anastacio Martinez to Pittsburgh for Scott Sauerbeck and Mike Gonzalez on Tuesday.
Analysis: Watch this situation over the next few days. Since Sauerbeck has already pitched for Boston, the trade can't be negated. But the Pirates might seek more compensation.
News: Brandon Lyon was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. Minor-league pitcher Anastacio Martinez was also traded for relief pitcher Scott Sauerbeck and minor-league pitcher Mike Gonzalez.
Analysis: Lyon might see save opportunities in the Pirates' closer-by-committee bullpen. He is worth adding in NL-only leagues.
News: Red Sox manager Grady Little told the Boston Herald that Brandon Lyon, who is 0-2 with two blown saves and a 13.50 ERA in his last five outings, will be used primarily in non-pressure situations until he regains his confidence. "That's a consideration, if possible," Little said. "He's just hit a bump in the road. He's got enough veteran players and coaches around here who can tell him how to handle the tough times."
Analysis: Lyon is unlikely to reclaim the closer's role the remainder of the season, so he's useless if you counted on him for saves. Right now he can't even be counted on to help an AL-only squad in ERA and WHIP.
News: The Providence Journal reports that Boston might use Byung-Hyun Kim as their closer instead of Brandon Lyon.
Analysis: The team is also continuing to pursue Armando Benitez from the Mets. Watch this situation closely.
News: The Boston Globe says Brandon Lyon's recent success as a closer will not prevent the Red Sox from continuing to pursue another fireman. "There are a lot of nights I sit there and think to myself, 'I'd like to see Brandon Lyon come in that game in the sixth inning and go the sixth, seventh, and eighth, and maybe finish the game," Grady Little said. "I think he could do that and a number of other jobs. He could be a starter down the road."
Analysis: Lyon might lose the closer's job soon, as Boston makes a push to fill their biggest hole and keep pace with the Yankees in the AL East.
News: Lyon pitched a perfect ninth inning on Friday to earn his seventh save of the season.
Analysis: Lyon has converted all seven of his save opportunities this season. He is an above-average closer in AL-only leagues.
News: Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth inning on Tuesday, striking out the side, to earn his sixth save of the season.
Analysis: With the return of Robert Person, Lyon might lose an occasional save opportunity to the veteran, but Lyon appears to be the closer of choice for the Red Sox at the moment.
News: Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Tuesday to earn his fifth save of the season. He did allow two hits.
Analysis: Lyon has been the closer of choice for the past couple of weeks, but the Red Sox activated Robert Person (elbow, shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Person might cut into Lyon's save opportunities, especially if Lyon struggles at some point.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Red Sox manager Grady Little has decided to use both Chad Fox and Brandon Lyon as his closers. "They've kind of showed us they're the ones who should be pitching the ninth inning," Little said. "That's what we've been looking for ever since we left spring training. They're a couple of guys we're not scared to go to, and they're a couple of guys who aren't scared to be out there, and that's what we need."
Analysis: Grab either Fox or Lyon or both if they are available in an AL-only league. However, neither reliever has much value in a mixed league until one becomes the favorite for saves.
News: Brandon Lyon, who recorded the first save of his career Wednesday, will now close games for Boston. ''We've been looking for a guy to step up, and I saw a kid [Wednesday] night stepping up,'' manager Grady Little told the Boston Globe. ''I wouldn't be surprised to see Brandon up there again (Friday) in the ninth inning.''
Analysis: The move makes Lyon much more valuable from a Fantasy perspective, so pick him up if possible. Mike Timlin, Alan Embree and Chad Fox all look much less appealing with Lyon closing games.
News: Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday to earn his first of the season.
Analysis: Lyon and Mike Timlin have been the only production relief pitchers for Boston. Consider adding Lyon in AL-only leagues if you are desperate for saves.
News: The Boston Globe says Brandon Lyon might start taking regular turns in the late innings. He might get a chance to cloe games, as well as pitch in middle and long relief. ''A lot of the definition of the committee we've got here is no different from the way it has always been in baseball. If you don't have a defined closer to start the season, the way that people pitch kind of dictates where they'll pitch in games,'' Grady Little said.
Analysis: The Red Sox are struggling to find reliable closing options, and none of their short relievers appear to be reliable Fantasy options right now.
News: The Boston Red Sox claimed Lyon off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. He might contend for a rotation spot in the spring, but is unlikely to help any Fantasy teams in 2003.
Analysis:
News: The Blue Jays optioned Lyon to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. He was farmed out due to early-season struggles in order to clear a roster spot for Chris Carpenter, who was activated from the disabled list to start Saturday's game.
Analysis:
News: Lyon will start Tuesday's game in place of the injured Luke Prokopec. Don't rush to get him in your active lineup. His stay in the starting rotation might only be temporary.
Analysis:
News: Toronto Manager Buck Martinez sent Lyon to the bullpen. He might be sent to the minor leagues in the near future. Either Mike Smith or Mark Hendrickson might take his next start on May 28, according to the Toronto Sun. Both pitchers are currently in the minor leagues.
