Jose Molina, Cole Figueroa clear waivers, released by Rays

(11/26/2014) Catcher Jose Molina and infielder Cole Figueroa cleared waivers and were released by the Rays Wednesday. 

Both Molina and Figueroa were designated for assignment Thursday. Molina, 39, hit .178 over 225 at-bats last year, while Figueroa hit .233 in 43 at-bats.

The team designated Cole Figueroa, Michael Kohn and Jose Molina for assignment, freeing up space on the roster. The team then added Matt AndrieseRyan Brett , Grayson Garvin, Mikie Mahtook  and Justin O’Conner to the 40-man roster.

(11/20/2014) The Rays have designated catcher Jose Molina for assignment on Thursday, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Molina is signed for $2.75 million in 2015. The team wanted to clear space on the 40-man roster, and determined Molina had to go. The 39-year-old hit .178 over 225 at-bats last year.

Molina left Wednesday's game after taking a foul off his mask. "All indications are good," according to VP of baseball operations Andrew Friedman. Molina is hitting just .137 through 73 at-bats. The team is already dealing with an injury to Ryan Hanigan, and can't afford to lose Molina for a significant amount of time.

Molina has played for the Rays for each of the last two seasons, and in 2013, he started 87 games behind the plate and hit .233 with two home runs and 18 RBI.
