Newhan, who started at second Feb. 26, likely would need Geoff Blum, Kaz Matsui or Aaron Boone to be hurt this spring to open the season with the Astros. "There's a whole bunch of other guys that I have to take a look at before I get to that point," Cecil Cooper said when asked if Newhan would play short this spring. "He did tell me that he could play it. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

Newhan was 3-for-5 with a run scored. "I feel comfortable," Newhan said. "I'm not wide-eyed. I just try to have fun. I know it can be taken away at any time."

Matsui to DL; Newhan called up


(6/24/2008) The Houston Astros placed second baseman Kaz Matsui on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring on Tuesday. Matsui was injured running to first base after hitting a grounder in the sixth inning of Houston's 3-2 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Astros purchased the contract of David Newhan from Triple-A Round Rock to take his spot on the roster. Manager Cecil Cooper said Mark Loretta would likely get most of the starts in place of Matsui. He said Geoff Blum and Ty Wigginton could also fill in at second base. Cooper said he wasn't sure if Matsui's injury will keep him out past the 15 days. "We hope that's all it is," he said. "We'll see how things go. We'll just kind of go from day to day."

Astros part ways with Newhan


(4/14/2008) The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros purchased the contract of catcher Humberto Quintero from Triple-A Round Rock and DH/OF David Newhan for assignment Monday. There were no broken bones in starter J.R. Towles' hand. “But he said there is a good chance he's going to be pretty sore and may be limited for the Philadelphia series (April 15-17),” manager Ed Wade said. “He may be limited in what he can do," he said. “He may be able to do certain things for us, that’s why we’re not disabling him. Obviously, we want our best nine on the field every night, and so far we’ve had a difficult time getting to that point."

Anderson will compete with Jose Valentin and Ruben Gotay for the second base job, according to The Sports Xchange notes. He should also get some time in left field.
