(6/17/2014) Braves backup catcher Gerald Laird was back in the starting lineup Tuesday vs. Philadelphia, making his first start since sustaining a head injury Thursday. Laird is batting .324 (11 for 34) with three doubles and five RBI in his last 11 games.

Laird left Thursday's game after being hit with a follow-through on a swing. He has sat out two straight games. He is hitting .243 with five RBI in 70 at-bats.

(6/12/2014) Braves backup catcher Gerald Laird said he never lost consciousness after getting slammed in the mask by a bat in the game Thursday against Colorado. He added that the backswing jarred his jaw, but that he didn't get dizzy.

Laird was removed from the game, but he passed concussion tests afterward.

(10/9/2013) With catcher Brian McCann heading into free agency this offseason, the Braves face uncertainty at the catcher position for the first time in eight years. Manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated Wednesday that Evan Gattis, Gerald Laird and Christian Bethancourt are all in the mix for playing time behind the plate, MLB.com reports.

"Maybe not knowing what's going on, but you give Bethancourt a little chance and bring him along a little bit," Gonzalez told MLB.com. "Go with Gattis and Laird, and throw Bethancourt a bone every once in a while, put Gattis out in left field because we know that he can do it."

McCann played 92 games behind the plate in 2013, including 91 starts and 84 complete games. Gattis made 42 appearances and 38 starts at catcher while drawing 48 appearances (47 starts) in left field, as well as four appearances at first base. Laird was the only other Brave to draw playing time at catcher, making 40 appearances and 33 starts at the position.

(4/19/2013) The Braves have had trouble finding playing time for backup catcher Gerald Laird, thanks to Evan Gattis' early breakout.

Laird started his fifth game of the season Thursday against the Pirates, as he remains Julio Teheran's catcher of choice. He went hitless in the game, while walking once. He was officially 0 for 1 in the game, reaching on an error at one point in the game. The Braves won the game, 6-4.

Laird is batting .308 in 13 at-bats, with two doubles, three walks and only one strikeout.

Laird reached on an infield single in his first at-bat before doubling in the fourth inning.
