Cards looking for Tuesday starter

(4/27/2007) According to MLB.com, with the Cardinals optioning P Randy Keisler to Triple-A Friday and brining up reliever Kelvin Jimenez, the team does not have a starter for Tuesday's game against the Brewers. While the team figures out who to slot in, injured SP Chris Carpenter (elbow) will not be one of those options, manager Tony La Russa said. Some options include using a hanful of relievers or possibly calling up a veteran like Matt Ginter or Mike Smith.

Mike Smith sent down Tuesday

(8/8/2006) With Francisco Liriano's pitching arm still bothering him, the Minnesota Twins purchased the contract of right-hander Matt Garza from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. To make room for Garza, who will join the team for Tuesday night's game against the Tigers, the Twins optioned right-hander Mike Smith to Rochester.

Mike Smith doesn't last long

(8/7/2006) Smith, who made his first major league appearance since Sept. 28, 2002, allowed four runs, three hits and three walks in three innings in Sunday's start at Kansas City. "He threw 80 pitches in three innings," Gardenhire said. "That's not the way we pitch up here. We attack the hitters. It's 100 degrees out there. We need to move the game along, pick up the pace, make them hit the ball, get the fielders off the field."

Twins line up Smith for Sunday

(8/4/2006) The Twins brought up right-hander Mike Smith from Triple-A Rochester in case Brad Radke (shoulder) could not make the start or had an early exit against the Royals on Thursday night. Radke went eight innings, so Smith is scheduled to start Sunday against the Royals.

Twins call on Smith in emergency

(8/2/2006) The Twins optioned right-hander Boof Bonser to Triple-A Rochester following a rough start Wednesday in a loss to Texas. To take his place, right-hander Mike Smith will be brought up from Rochester and added to the 40-man roster. Smith will be an emergency backup for veteran Brad Radke, the scheduled starter for Thursday night's game at Kansas City who had his previous start cut short by discomfort in his chronically sore shoulder. If Radke doesn't have any problems, Smith will start Sunday against the Royals, pitching coach Rick Anderson said. Then star left-hander Francisco Liriano, who was scratched from Wednesday's start because of inflammation in his forearm, will take the mound Monday at Detroit.
