Clint Barmes bouncing around infield this spring

(2/28/2014) Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes started at shortstop Friday and is scheduled to start at second base Saturday. He also began working out at third base last weeked as the team prepares him for a utility role.

"He's going to move around. He's going to play second, third. You can read into it whatever you want," manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com. "We're going to move him around that utility/middle position. We're going to move him around and get him more exposure at other places."

Barmes spent the last three seasons almost exclusively at shortstop, but he said recently he's "excited for the chance to move all over." The team is moving forward with Jody Mercer as its starting shortstop.

(12/12/2013) The Pirates and free agent shortstop Clint Barmes agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal Thursday. Barmes, who is mostly valued for his glove, hit .211 with a .558 OPS in 304 at-bats for the Pirates last year, splitting time at shortstop with Jordy Mercer.

Burnett, who was not extended a qualifying offer, the Pirates have had several players declare free agency, including relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, shortstop Clint Barmes, catcher John Buck, outfielder Marlon Byrd, starting pitcher Jeff Karstens and first baseman Justin Morneau.

Burnett is expected to re-sign with the Pirates if he doesn't retire. The Pirates have also expressed interest in bringing back Byrd, Morneau and Barmes.

(10/31/2013) The Pirates are eager to re-sign pitcher A.J. Burnett, outfielder Marlon Byrd and shortstop Clint Barmes, MLB.com reports. Burnett is expected to be extended a $14.1-million qualifying offer, one that MLB.com expects him to accept.

Burnett has said that he'll either pitch for the Pirates in 2014 or retire. Byrd is due for a sizable raise from his $700,000 salary in 2013 after hitting .291/.336/.511 with 24 home runs and 88 RBI in 532 at-bats. Barmes just finished a two-year, $10.5-million contract, hitting .221/.263/.316 in 759 at-bats over the last two years.

(7/29/2013) Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes doubled twice and drove in two runs during a 9-2 win over the Cardinals Monday night.

Barmes went 2 for 4 and plated both runs on his double to deep center in the seventh inning. He's batting .224 on the season for the Bucs.

The 34-year-old middle infielder has three RBI in his last two games but just 13 on the year over 214 at-bats.

Barmes has received pretty consistent playing time lately, but was out of the starting lineup Tuesday. He's hitting .220/.268/.290 in 200 at-bats.

Barmes's solo shot was off Mets phenom Matt Harvey despite hitting .219/.265/.302. He was 2 for 4 Sunday.

(5/4/2013) Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes belted his first home run Saturday against the Nationals. Barmes ripped the two-run shot over the center-field fence in the fifth inning off starter Stephen Strasburg.

He also singled and scored in the third inning and finished 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored in a 5-4 defeat.

Barmes, who is batting .192 on the year, is hitting .363 ( 8 for 22) with one home run, one double and four RBI in day games.

(1/8/2013) Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes, who finished 2012 with a .229 average and 16 doubles in 455 at-bats, told the Tribune-Review on Monday that he adjusted his swing halfway through last year, and hopes that the changes he made will help him get off to a much better start in 2013. “I was trying to get my legs more involved, which slowed everything down and (put) my timing off,” Barmes said. “It was a grind. I dug myself into a pretty deep hole and had to spend the rest of the year trying to climb out.”
