Padres sub Clint Barmes slams two hits to aid in victory

(6/28/2015) For a player that entered in the fifth inning, Padres shortstop Clint Barmes certainly made an impact Saturday against Arizona.

Barmes, who replaced the injured Cory Spangenberg, singled and scored in the sixth and doubled in the seventh in a San Diego rout. He is now batting .400 (8-for-20) over his last seven games.

(6/21/2015) Padres shortstop Clint Barmes was virtually unstoppable at the plate during Saturday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Barmes went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. 

The performance came at a time where Barmes was hitting .143 (1-for-7) in his last four games.

(6/13/2015) Padres shortstop Clint Barmes flashed some rare power on Friday, as he went deep for just the second time this season. Barmes lifted off for a solo shot against Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as the Dodgers took the 4-3 victory.

Barmes had two hits on Friday, and the home run was his first in nearly two months. He's hit well in limited action this month, collecting seven hits in 19 at-bats over six games in June.

Alexi Amarista has started four straight games at the position, but he'll get a break on Sunday in favor of Barmes, who has hit .262/.304/.338 with one home run and two RBI in 65 at-bats.

The Padres are heavy underdogs (+155) in Cincinnati on Sunday, per VegasInsider.com.

(6/1/2015) Padres shortstop Clint Barmes totaled a season-best three hits -- all singles -- and one RBI during a 7-1 win Sunday against the Padres. He also had one strikeout and one run.

Barmes made just his 14th start of the season Sunday. Of his 14 starts, 12 have come when a left-hander has started for the opposition.

He is batting .333 with one home run, two doubles, two RBI and seven runs in 12 starts against lefties in 2015.

(5/13/2015) Padres second baseman Cory Spangenberg and shortstop Alexi Amarista are in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Mariners, the team announced.

Spangenberg was the DH on Tuesday, but will take over at second for Jedd Gyorko. He is hitting .260 in 50 at-bats this season. Amarista replaces Clint Barmes at shortstop. He is hitting .183 with seven RBI in 82 at-bats this season.

(5/4/2015) For the second time in three games, the Padres are keeping both first baseman Yonder Alonso and shortstop Alexi Amarista out of the starting lineup. 

Just as in Saturday's contest, Yangervis Solarte gets the start at first and Clint Barmes will start at shortstop.

It's Solarte's fifth start of the year at first, and Barmes eighth at short. They're hitting fifth and eighth in the lineup respectively.

Yangervis Solarte starts in place of Alonso at first for the fourth time this season but second time in three games. He'll bat fifth in the lineup. 

Clint Barmes also makes his second start in three games for the Padres. He's in the lineup at short for the seventh time this year and will bat eighth.

(4/22/2015) Padres infielder Clint Barmes launched his first home run of the season during Tuesday's 7-6 victory over the Rockies in Colorado.

Barmes launched a solo home run in the third inning off Tyler Matzek and drew a walk in the fifth inning. Cory Spangenberg entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Barmes, ending his night. He finished 1 for 1 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. He is hitting .333 (8 for 24) with two doubles, a home run and an RBI this season.

"I feel like I'm seeing the ball pretty well right now," Barmes said, per MLB.com. "I'm not trying to do too much. I'm trying to stay inside the ball and put up good swings and have solid at-bats. It felt really good to catch a fastball out front a little bit and stay through it."


Report: Padres searching for upgrade at shortstop

(4/7/2015) The Padres closed out an action-filled offseason by acquiring closer Craig Kimbrel from the Braves Sunday, and it seems as if the team is not done dealing. The Padres are "scouring" the market for an upgrade at shortstop, USA Today reports.

Seven of the team's nine starters on Opening Day were acquired this offseason, including the first five hitters in the lineup and starting pitcher James Shields. The team gave the start at shortstop to Clint Barmes, who went 1 for 3 with a double and two strikeouts in the team's 6-3 loss to the Dodgers. Alexi Amarista, who pinch-hit for Barmes late in the game, also figures to see playing time at shortstop if the team can't land an upgrade.

(3/31/2015) Padres infielder Clint Barmes is heating up as spring training closes. 

After getting just four hits in his first 23 at bats, Barmes is four for his last 10. Barmes had no extra base hits in his first 23 at bats, he has a double and a solo homer in the last 10. 

"It's just continuing to work on timing and get my legs underneath me, especially early on in the spring," Barmes said, per U-T San Diego. "Once I felt like, a couple weeks in, I started to get my legs underneath me, then it's just been a process of getting the timing down, defensively as much as offensively."

(12/3/2014) The Padres have signed infielder Clint Barmes to a one-year deal, according to FoxSports.com. CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman confirmed the signing.

Barmes' deal contains a club option for a second year, and is currently pending a physical. The 35-year-old Barmes hit .245/.328/.294 over 102 at-bats with Pittsburgh last season.

The team has recalled and reinstated infielder Clint Barmes from the 15-day disabled list and designated infielder Jayson Nix for assignment. They have also officially selected the contract of outfielder Jose Tabata from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned outfielder Gregory Polanco to Indianapolis.

Barmes is attempting to come back from a groin injury. He's been on a rehab assignment for a few days, and is nearing a return. Manager Clint Hurdle expressed some optimism that Barmes could be back as soon as Monday. Barmes is hitting .239 over 88 at-bats.

Barmes jogged for the first time Wednesday since going on the disabled list on July 6. He will travel with the team on its upcoming road trip and hopes to take batting practice within the coming week. Barmes has hit .239/.320/.284 in 88 at-bats.

Barmes went 4 for 5 in the game and scored one run, on a balk in the fifth inning. He had one double but did not drive in a run in spite of the solid performance in the extra-innings win.

Barmes is hitting .263/.341/.313 in 80 at-bats as a part-time player this season.

(5/30/2014) The Pirates got a rare productive performance from a part-time player Thursday, as Clint Barmes scored twice in a 6-3 win over the Dodgers.  

Barmes went 3 for 4 in his first multi-hit performance in nearly four weeks. All three hits were singles, and he came around to score twice in the win.

Barmes is hitting .255 in 51 at-bats for the Pirates.

(2/28/2014) Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes started at shortstop Friday and is scheduled to start at second base Saturday. He also began working out at third base last weeked as the team prepares him for a utility role.

"He's going to move around. He's going to play second, third. You can read into it whatever you want," manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com. "We're going to move him around that utility/middle position. We're going to move him around and get him more exposure at other places."

Barmes spent the last three seasons almost exclusively at shortstop, but he said recently he's "excited for the chance to move all over." The team is moving forward with Jody Mercer as its starting shortstop.

Burnett, who was not extended a qualifying offer, the Pirates have had several players declare free agency, including relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, shortstop Clint Barmes, catcher John Buck, outfielder Marlon Byrd, starting pitcher Jeff Karstens and first baseman Justin Morneau.

Burnett is expected to re-sign with the Pirates if he doesn't retire. The Pirates have also expressed interest in bringing back Byrd, Morneau and Barmes.

(10/31/2013) The Pirates are eager to re-sign pitcher A.J. Burnett, outfielder Marlon Byrd and shortstop Clint Barmes, MLB.com reports. Burnett is expected to be extended a $14.1-million qualifying offer, one that MLB.com expects him to accept.

Burnett has said that he'll either pitch for the Pirates in 2014 or retire. Byrd is due for a sizable raise from his $700,000 salary in 2013 after hitting .291/.336/.511 with 24 home runs and 88 RBI in 532 at-bats. Barmes just finished a two-year, $10.5-million contract, hitting .221/.263/.316 in 759 at-bats over the last two years.
