Fossum up; Cruceta designated

(6/3/2008) The Detroit Tigers purchased the contract of SP Casey Fossum from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. To make room for Fossum, the team designated reliever Francisco Cruceta for assignment. The right-hander gave up the winning run in a 3-2 loss in Oakland on Monday night. Fossum signed with the Tigers on April 8 as a minor league free agent. He has played for Boston, Arizona and Tampa Bay in seven major league seasons.

Tigers like what they see in Cruceta

(5/13/2008) According to The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Francisco Cruceta has been just about what the Tigers thought he would be when they signed him. "He is what they said he was," manager Jim Leyland said. "He has very good stuff, and if he's a strike-thrower, he'll be very good. He has to command that fastball better, but he's something to work with. He has the dreaded pitch in today's baseball world. That's the split (split-fingered fastball) and he has a good one." Cruceta has appeared in five games for the Tigers with a 3.18 ERA. He has allowed three walks and three hits while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

Cruceta thrown right into mix

(5/2/2008) The Sports Xchange notes that Francisco Cruceta reported to the Tigers on Thursday and his manager immediately got him on the mound. "I'm so glad to be here, man," he said. "I'm so happy right now to play the game, try to compete." He relieved to start the ninth inning with an 8-4 lead and walked the first batter he faced but retired the next three to make his first Tigers appearance successful. "If he can pitch, he'll be good," said manager Jim Leyland. "If he can't, he'll just be a nice-looking kid with a good smile."

Cruceta back from restricted list

(5/1/2008) The Detroit Tigers reinstated reliever Francisco Cruceta from the restricted list before Thursday night's game against the New York Yankees. The right-hander was brought up from Triple-A Toledo, where he was 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 15 strikeouts in seven innings spanning three games.

Cruceta looks good in Triple-A

(4/23/2008) Francisco Cruceta pitched three scoreless innings for Triple-A Toledo Tuesday. It was his first official appearance for the Tigers organization after being signed as a free agent last fall. "I feel good. I've been working hard, and I'm ready," Cruceta told MLB.com. "I'm ready right now."

Cruceta nearly ready to join Triple-A

(4/21/2008) The Sports Xchange reports that Tigers RHP Francisco Cruceta appears nearly ready to join Detroit's Triple-A farm club in Toledo to determine if he could help the Tigers' bullpen. Cruceta, who reported after Spring Training due to visa problems in getting out of the Dominican Republic, has been pitching at the Tigers' extended spring training camp in Lakeland, Fla. Detroit can assign him to a minor league team for up to 15 days but then will have to decide whether to add him to its major league roster or put him on waivers. He is out of options. Cruceta threw Friday but only hit 90 on the radar gun after clicking a 94 reading the day before.

Cruceta still having visa problems

(3/3/2008) According to MLB.com, Tigers RP Francisco Cruceta still hasn't arrived at camp because of visa problems. His chances of making the team this spring are dwindling. "I don't want to be discouraging or anything," manager Jim Leyland said, "but right now, I'm not counting on Cruceta at all. I know he's been throwing and he's in shape and everything, but I can't make any judgment on Cruceta and not even see him. It's not his fault. I'm not blaming anybody. I'm just saying that at some point, you have to (proceed). We're not sitting here every day saying, 'I hope Cruceta gets here.' We'd like to see it, but we're going about our business either way."
