Casey Kotchman nearly ready for rehab

(5/16/2013) Marlins first baseman Casey Kotchman has yet to begin his rehab assignment, as expected, but he did take part in pre-game fielding and batting practice Thursday. He is expected to go out on a rehab assignment soon, according to MLB.com.

Kotchman has been out since April 3 with a hamstring injury. He is on the 60-day disabled list and is not eligible to return until early June.

(5/11/2013) Marlins manager Mike Redmond told the Miami Herald that first baseman Casey Kotchman (hamstring) has been cleared for baseball activities and will start his rehab assignment on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Redmond has not specified which minor-league affiliate Kotchman will play for this week. The 30-year-old has been on the disabled list since early April and has appeared in just two games this season.

(4/19/2013) Casey Kotchman was the Marlins' opening day first baseman due to Logan Morrison's prolonged recovery from knee surgery, but injuries of his own have kept him off the field since the team's second game.  

Kotchman is on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled hamstring, and he has yet to begin running as part of his return.

"He's still the same," Marlins manager Mike Redmond told MLB.com Friday. "It just takes time. He pulled that thing pretty good. He's progressing, but it just takes time for that thing to heal."

Kotchman is dealing with a strained hamstring. The move is retroactive to April 4. Kyle Skipworth has been called up to take Kotchman's roster spot.

Greg Dobbs, who started in Kotchman's place Thursday at Washington, will see most of the starts at first base in Kotchman's absence, according to The Palm Beach Post.

Kotchman is 0 for 5 to open the season. He hit .400 (18 for 45) with one homer, five doubles and six RBI in 17 spring games.

"He's listed as day-to-day. We have to wait and see how he is tomorrow," manager Mike Redmond told MLB.com. "I watched him going down that line, and he grabbed that thing right away, and then went down in a heap. Those things typically are pretty sore the next day."

Greg Dobbs entered the game for Kotchman after the injury.

Greg Dobbs took over at first base for Kotchman and would likely see increased playing time were Kotchman to miss time.

(3/26/2013) The Marlins told outfielder Austin Kearns and first baseman Casey Kotchman they will be added to the 25-man roster, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Tuesday. 

The 30-year-old Kotchman is hitting .425 this spring with a homer and six RBI over 40 at-bats. Kearns, 32, hit .094 this spring over 32 at-bats.

(3/20/2013) CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports the Marlins' opening day roster is beginning to take shape. Heyman said the defensive alignment will be Rob Brantly at catcher, Casey Kotchman at first base, Donovan Solano at second base, Adeiny Hechavarria at shortstop, Placido Polanco at third base, Juan Pierre in left field, Justin Ruggiano in center field and Giancarlo Stanton in right field.

The rotation isn't settled yet, but Ricky Nolasco, Henderson Alvarez and Nate Eovaldi have secured spots. The final two spots remain up for grabs.

Kotchman didn't appear bothered by the injury Tuesday as he clubbed a grand slam in the first inning off Jenrry Mejia. He went 1 for 2 before his day ended.

(2/24/2013) The Palm Beach Post reports Marlins first baseman Casey Kotchman played in a simulated game Sunday, six days after slicing open his left ring finger. “He threw and hit and had a couple of at-bats in a simulated game. He is progressing,” manager Mike Redmond said. “It’s kind of on him right now when he feels like he is ready to go out and play in a game. Pretty quick for a guy who got four stitches in his hand. We’re maybe expecting him soon.”

Kotchman suffered the injury after running into a pop-up machine while chasing a fly ball. "We will see how he feels (Tuesday) and evaluate from there and see how long he’s going to be out," manager Mike Redmond said. "Hopefully it’s not more than a few days."
