Lugo struck by liner in minors


(4/27/2010) From The Sports Xchange notes: Julio Lugo got a scare over the weekend when news reached him that his brother, Ruddy, a pitcher with Triple-A Toledo was struck in the right temple with a line drive. Ruddy Lugo spent the night in the hospital and ended up with a "big bump" on his head, Julio Lugo said. The Orioles' utility infielder, who entered as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the eighth Sunday, said he didn't sleep Saturday because of concern for his brother.

Tigers finalize 25-man roster

(8/5/2008) The New York Daily News reports that an MRI on injured Mets closer Billy Wagner revealed a strained forearm. Wagner is expected to be placed on the 15-day DL before Tuesday's game in San Diego, and Ruddy Lugo should be activated in time to replace Wagner in the bullpen.

Who will start Saturday for Mets?


(7/24/2008) Mets manager Jerry Manuel said the club has had discussions about who will start Saturday's game against St. Louis. "It will be, obviously, somebody from our system," he said. RHP Brian Stokes started for Triple-A New Orleans on Monday and would be on regular rest, and RHP Ruddy Lugo could be pushed back a day after pitching for the Zephyrs on Sunday. New York also could look to a lower level of the minors.

(1/31/2008) The Mets added depth to their bullpen by claiming hometown pitcher Ruddy Lugo off waivers from Oakland. Lugo was 6-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 38 relief appearances with the Athletics and Tampa Bay last season. Oakland claimed him off waivers in June, then designated him for assignment Friday after claiming outfielder Jeff Fiorentino off waivers from Cincinnati. The younger brother of Boston shortstop Julio Lugo, Ruddy was selected by Milwaukee in the third round of the 1999 amateur draft.

(1/30/2008) As the New York Mets went to work Wednesday on a contract extension for Johan Santana, they also added depth to their bullpen by claiming hometown pitcher Ruddy Lugo off waivers from Oakland. Lugo was 6-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 38 relief appearances with the Athletics and Tampa Bay last season. Oakland claimed him off waivers in June, then designated him for assignment Friday after claiming outfielder Jeff Fiorentino off waivers from Cincinnati. Lugo played at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, leading the team to the 1999 Catholic High School Athletic Association championship by striking out 12 and scoring the winning run in the title game at Shea Stadium.

(8/17/2007) Lugo pitched a perfect 10th inning on Thursday against the White Sox to earn the win for Oakland. Lugo (4-0) has allowed just one earned run in nine innings since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 4. "We just keep finding some of these new guys stepping in and really picking it up," A's manager Bob Geren said. "It's nice to see."

(8/4/2007) Pitcher Joe Kennedy was claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. The A's recalled right-hander Ruddy Lugo from Triple-A Sacramento to replace Kennedy on the 25-man roster. Lugo was 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA and a team leading 10 saves in 17 relief appearances with Sacramento. He did not allow a run in 16 of those outings and held opponents to a .081 batting average.

(6/29/2007) Oakland placed Travis Buck on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a sprained right thumb and optioned right-hander Ruddy Lugo to Triple-A Sacramento. The Athletics also recalled infielder Donnie Murphy and promoted outfielder Dee Brown from their top farm club. Oakland transferred outfielder Chris Snelling (left knee contusion) to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Brown on the 40-man roster.
