Rangers announce six spring invites


(4:48 am ET) The Texas Rangers announced infielder Esteban German and left-handed pitcher Clay Rapada have both cleared waivers and been outrighted to the roster of Triple-A Oklahoma City. They will both be non-roster invitees to major league spring training. The club has also signed right-handed pitcher Geoff Geary and infielder Ray Olmedo to minor league contracts for the 2010 season, as each of those players has also received a non-roster invitation to major league spring training. With these moves, the Rangers now have a total of six players with non-roster invitations to major league spring training: RHP Willie Eyre, Geary, German, Olmedo, Rapada and C Kevin Richardson.

(6/10/2009) The Houston Astros have sent right-hander Geoff Geary outright to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday. Geary has three days to either accept the assignment or become a free agent. Geary went on the disabled list on May 14 with tendinitis in his right biceps. He was activated on Wednesday before the Astros made the move.

(6/7/2009) Astros relievers Geoff Geary and Jose Valverde each threw two simulated innings before the game. Valverde, on the disabled list with a right calf strain, planned to throw only one inning but felt so good, he went two. He is slated to pitch Tuesday and Wednesday in a minor-league rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi and likely will be activated for the Arizona series that starts Friday. Manager Cecil Cooper said Geary (right biceps tendinitis) also might be ready by Friday.

"I threw 20 pitches the first inning and 20 in the second with some curveballs," he said. "Right now it's just kind of a feel. ... I'll rush my lower half one pitch, and I'll rush my arm the next. I think it will be good that I'll be able to go down to the minor leagues and throw to some guys. I don't know how many innings, but I don't mind going down for a weekend and hanging out with the young bucks. Maybe they can teach me a few tricks."

"I threw I think 25 pitches," he said. "I didn't blow it out. I threw the ball pretty hard. I had one in particular pitch that I felt pain and it took me a second or two to kind of let the pain go away."

(10/2/2008) Astros relief pitchers Geoff Geary and Chris Sampson had surgery, and Sampson will be sidelined for four-to-six months. Geary, a 32-year-old right-hander, was in Philadelphia for repairs to a right hip adductor injury and a torn abdominal muscle. Sampson, a 30-year-old right-hander, had surgery to repair a lateral extensor tendon in his throwing elbow. He went 6-4 with a 4.22 ERA in a career-high 54 appearances, including 11 starts. Both operations were Wednesday.
