Phillies' Chase Utley, Ryan Howard out of lineup Sunday

(5/17/2015) Phillies second baseman Chase Utley and first baseman Ryan Howard are not in the lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Diamondbacks.

Utley is 3 for 6 with a walk, two doubles and two RBI in two games since being moved from third to sixth in the lineup, but he'll get a break Sunday, with Andres Blanco filling in at second base and batting second.

Howard had started seven straight games coming into Sunday's contest, hitting .259/.310/.444 with one home run and three RBI in 27 at-bats during that stretch. Darin Ruf is drawing the start at first base.

The Phillies are home underdogs (+115) against the Diamondbacks Sunday, per VegasInsider.com.

Slumping second baseman Chase Utley will sit out for the third time in the last four games. Cesar Hernandez takes his place. 

Third baseman Cody Asche also goes to the bench, replaced by Andres Blanco.

(4/23/2015) Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg chose to rest four of his starters for Thursday's day game against the Marlins.

First baseman Ryan Howard, second baseman Chase Utley, shortstop Freddy Galvis and catcher Carlos Ruiz were all held out of the starting lineup. Darin Ruf started at first base, Cesar Hernandez started at second base, Andres Blanco started at shortstop and Cameron Rupp started at catcher.

Ruiz (.184), Howard (.196) and Utley (.120) are all batting below the Mendoza Line (.200). Galvis is batting .300 (15 for 50) with one double, one triple, one home run and eight RBI through 14 games.


Andres Blanco, Jeff Francoeur make Phillies Opening Day roster

(4/5/2015) The Phillies selected the contracts of infielder Andres Blanco and outfielder Jeff Francoeur Sunday.

Blanco will serve as a reserve after hitting .212/.255/.346 in 52 spring at-bats. Francoeur hit .227/.227/.295 in 44 at-bats and could see a significant amount of playing time in right field with Domonic Brown sidelined.

(3/12/2015) Phillies shortstop Andres Blanco hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning of Philadelphia's 6-5 win over the Tigers on Wednesday. 

Blanco, who scored on Cameron Rupp's groundout to short, played a huge role in a big fifth inning that saw the Phillies score all of six of their runs. Blanco went 1-for-4 with a strikeout and is now batting .294 this spring.
