Skip Schumaker makes progress Monday

(4/14/2014) Reds infielder Skip Schumaker made some progress with his shoulder injury Monday, hitting off a tee and doing some throwing, MLB.com reports.

"We're optimistic that, in relatively short order, he'll be able to get into game action," manager Bryan Price said.

Schumaker is on the disabled list with a dislocated left shoulder injured on March 21.

(4/13/2014) Reds infielder Skip Schumaker remains in the early stages of his rehab from a dislocated left shoulder, per MLB.com.

"I'm playing catch and stuff. No swings or anything," Schumaker said. "A lot of bike riding. A lot of stretching. A lot of ultrasounding."

Schumaker was given a four-week timetable for his recovery when he was first injured March 21.

"It's progressing how they said ... slow. I wish I had more for you," Schumaker said.

Schumaker dislocated his shoulder in late March, and will need time to recover from the injury. The move is retroactive to March 22, but Schumaker is expected to miss about a month of the season due to the injury.

(3/22/2014) Cardinals utility man Skip Schumaker was relieved that his injury has been diagnosed as a dislocated left shoulder because he thought it might have been more severe, per MLB.com. He will, however, start the regular season on the disabled list. He sustained the injury diving for a ball in the game against Kansas City on Friday.

Schumaker was raking this spring. He was batting .441 (15 for 34) with one home run.

(3/21/2014) Reds outfielder Skip Schumaker suffered a left shoulder injury in Friday's win over the Royals, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The Reds will have a better idea about the extent of the injury later. Schumaker went 1 for 2 with one run and one RBI Friday and is 15 for 34 with one home run and five walks this spring.

(3/11/2014) Reds outfielder Skip Schumaker continued his hot spring Tuesday by going 2 for 3 with two runs and hitting his first home run in his team's 8-5 loss to the Giants.

The two-hit performance gives a Schumaker a .550/.583/.800 line through 20 at-bats as he attempts to play himself into a larger role once the regular season begins. He could be an option in center field if rookie Billy Hamilton gets off to a slow start.

News of the deal first leaked Monday, but the terms were not known initially. He hit .263/.332/.332 in 319 at-bats last season.

Schumaker is expected to take on the utility role he has previously filled for the Dodgers and Cardinals. In 2013, he hit .263 with two home runs and 30 RBI in 319 at-bats.

They join second baseman Mark Ellis, who had his team option declined, and starting pitcher Chris Capuano, who had his mutual option declined.

(8/12/2013) Since batting .119 in his first 23 games, Dodgers infielder/outfielder Skip Schumaker is batting .310 in his last 70 games (45 starts). He credits his wife for helping with his turnaround.

"I talked to my wife, [Lindsey]," Schumaker said, per MLB.com, "she told me to settle down and believe in myself and stop pressing. I was pressing and panicking because of all I had done to get here. It hasn't been easy for me. 

"I'm much more relaxed. Just talking to her helped me settle in. You know, you come here and you don't really know anybody, they don't know what you can do, and you try to prove yourself and show you're good enough to be part of a winning team. That's why it's been absolutely gratifying to be able to bounce back from the way I started, and I just want to continue to do that."


Skip Schumaker racks up four hits in win

(8/10/2013) Dodgers outfielder Skip Schumaker had his best game of the season Saturday against the Rays, as he continued to hit the ball well. 

Schumaker, who had five hits in his previous two games, picked up his first four-hit game of the season against the Rays. He went 4 for 4 in a 5-0 win, without scoring a run or driving one in. 

Schumaker pushed his batting average up from .264 to .276 with the game. He is 9 for 14 over his last three games.

(7/28/2013) Dodgers infielder/outfielder Skip Schumaker homered for the second time in four games Saturday against the Reds. Schumaker, who went 2 for 4 with one double, two runs and two RBI, didn't have a home run in his first 78 games before homering July 22.

Schumaker has produced five multi-hit games in July. He is batting .405 (15 for 37) with two home runs, four doubles, six RBI and eight runs in 13 July games (eight starts).

Schumaker is having a productive run in July. He is batting .423 (11 for 26) with one home run, three doubles, four RBI and six runs in 10 games (five starts).

Schumaker took over the leadoff spot for Carl Crawford, who was scratched with a back injury. Schumaker singled in the third for his only hit of the night. He finished 1 for 3 in a 3-0 defeat, improving his batting average to .255 on the year.

(5/24/2013) Like most of his teammates, Dodgers utility infielder Skip Schumaker has struggled to get going so far this year. But Schumaker, who is hitting .213 for a last-place team, isn't worried.

"From experience it takes awhile for everyone to come together and to have chemistry. Once that happens and everyone can trust each other, we'll be all right," Schumaker told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

For his part, Schumaker is showing signs of life recently, despite not playing every day. He has started six of the last 10 games, and is batting .304 in that span.

Going 1 for 3 with a run scored in the game, Schumaker raised his batting average to .190. Struggling with the bat for most of the year, Schumaker has hit in four straight games and has gone 5 for 11 (.455) over that stretch with three doubles and three RBI. He's also stolen a base over that span.

(4/30/2013) Dodgers infielder Skip Schumaker made his second career pitching appearance Monday against the Rockies, taking the mound in the ninth inning of a 12-2 loss. 

"It's a tough situation because you're getting your butt kicked and you try not to have too good of a time out there because you're down by [10]," said Schumaker, who pitched some in college, per MLB.com. "But you don't get too many chances for that. I remember growing up watching Orel [Hershiser] pitch, so I was on the same mound as Orel. That was pretty cool."

Schumaker allowed two hits and a walk, but he escaped a bases-loaded jam by inducing Jonathan Herrera to ground out to end the threat. Schumaker threw 25 pitches.

"You just try to not get anybody hurt and get through that inning as quick as you can," said Schumaker, who is batting .139 (5 for 36) in 21 games.

(12/12/2012) The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals agreed late Tuesday to trade second baseman Skip Schumaker to the Dodgers for minor league shortstop Jake Lemmerman. The deal is pending a physical exam for Schumaker, which could happen as soon as Wednesday. Schumaker hit .276 in 107 games for the Cardinals in 2012.
