White Sox ask for waivers on Jeff Keppinger

(5/21/2014) The White Sox have requested waivers on veteran utility man Jeff Keppinger for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Keppinger was designated for assignment on May 14 after undergoing shoulder surgery that has prevented him from playing this season.

(5/14/2014) Veteran infielder Jeff Keppinger has been designated for assignment by the White Sox despite being in the second year of a three-year contract that pays him $12 million.

The 34-year-old Keppinger has been sidelined this season as he recovers from shoulder surgery. He was serviceable as mostly a starter in 2013 with a .253 average and 40 RBI. He has played for seven major league teams since debuting in 2004.

(3/10/2014) If the season were to start tomorrow, it appears the White Sox would go with Conor Gillaspie as the starting third baseman over challengers Matt Davidson, Marcus Semien and Jeff Keppinger

Gillaspie entered play Monday batting .278 (5 for 18) with a .500 slugging percentage, one double, one home run and three RBI in seven games.

"To me, he’s just in a better spot this year confidence-wise, knowledge-wise on what he needs to do to play, offensively, defensively," manager Robin Ventura told reporters in Arizona, per ESPN. "He actually had one game that wasn’t very good, but everybody has those and you have to be able to get over that and still have the confidence, and he’s done that."

Keppinger is building his shoulder back up to game levels while recovering from a debridement of his right shoulder last September. The team is expected to get him on the field this weekend, barring any setbacks.

"Every day it's a little bit better strength wise," manager Robin Ventura said. "He might get in to DH kind of thing just to get some at-bats. Swinging the bat, he's fine. So more waiting on when he's ready to throw and he says it's getting better every day. Probably looking more toward the weekend."

Keppinger is likely to play second base in his return. He's recovering from a debridement of his right shoulder last September.

Manager Robin Ventura said Keppinger's injury is "kind of slowly getting better." Keppinger has not played in early spring games due to the issue. He had surgery in the offseason to repair his shoulder. He hit just .253/.283/.317 in 423 at-bats.

(2/22/2014) White Sox versatile infielder Jeff Keppinger did not detail the family issues that have dominated his thought processes in recent years. Suffice it to say that he claims they are behind him, which will allow him in 2014 to concentrate on baseball.

"That's kind of hard to mix the two, family with your job, with work," he explained to CSNChicago.com. "With not having to worry about that and getting that taken care of and out of the way, I can set my focus straight to baseball. ... Trying to pick up a slider breaking at 90-something miles an hour, that's definitely a lot easier."

Keppinger, who is also recovering from shoulder surgery, batted .253 with four home runs and 40 RBI last season and is expected to play often at second and third base this year.

Keppinger signed a three-year deal before the 2013 season, but his expected status for spring training is not yet known.

He finished 2 for 3 in the game with his fourth HR of the season. Keppinger scored twice and is batting .247 on the year.

The infielder has two homers in his last seven games and three RBI over that stretch. He's driven in 35 runs over 380 at-bats this season.

(6/29/2013) White Sox infielder Jeff Keppinger had a monster performance in two losses during Friday's doubleheader against Cleveland. Keppinger recorded six hits in the two games. 

The 33-year-old veteran went 3 for 4 in the opener with a solo home run in the first inning off starter Trevor Bauer, his second homer of the year. He added a walk, drove in two runs and scored twice. 

Keppinger also went 3 for 4 in the nightcap with a triple and two RBI. He also walked in that game, as he reached base eight times on the day. He's batting .247. 

Keppinger has three three-hit games in his last six contests and has gone 10 for 19 (.526) over that stretch with five RBI and four runs scored.

Keppinger took starter Trevor Bauer deep in the opening frame for a solo home run. He singled home one more run in the sixth and finished 3 for 4 with a walk, three runs scored and two RBI in a 19-10 loss.
