Donnie Murphy overdue for reality check

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/23/2013) Thinking about adding Donnie Murphy as a sneaky starter at third base for Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 26-Sept. 1)? Think again.

The Cubs have some of the toughest matchups of any team next week, facing true aces Zack Greinke, Clayton Kershaw and Cliff Lee, but even if they didn't, you couldn't expect Murphy's unprecedented power surge -- eight home runs in 58 at-bats since his promotion Aug. 3 -- to continue. Not even he does.

"Don't get used to that," he said after his first two-homer game Aug. 7. Of course, that was five homers ago.

But really, don't. It's not that the 30-year-old has no power, but his numbers before his promotion were about as good as he's ever had in the minors. And 12 home runs in 302 at-bats in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League should not translate to eight in 58 at-bats in the majors.

If you happened to pick up Murphy a week or two ago and have already reaped the rewards, lucky you. Otherwise, you've probably missed the boat.

Donnie Murphy part of roster pinch

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2013) With the Brewers adding infielder Yuniesky Betancourt to the roster, third baseman Donnie Murphy is expected to be discarded by the club, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Murphy, in camp as a non-roster invitee, had a .239 batting average with two homers and six RBI in 24 Cactus League games.

"I've talked to Donnie Murphy and told him there would probably be no opportunity for him on the big-league club, general manager Doug Melvin said. "Yuni came in and back up the three infield positions, give us a bat off the bench. He's got more experience than Donnie and we thought that's important."

Donnie Murphy still battling for a spot

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/22/2013) With a little more than a week left in spring training and a spot on the roster not at all guaranteed, Brewers infielder Donnie Murphy had his best game of the spring Thursday. Murphy homered and hit a double in a loss to the White Sox, raising his batting average to .237 with four extra-base hits in 38 at bats. Murphy is battling for a spot as a utility man, and has been more impressive with his glove than his bat so far.

"He's done a nice job for us defensively," manager Ron Roenicke told MLB.com. "I know he'd like to swing the bat batter, and we feel like he will."

Murphy has been unable to take advantage of a number of opportunities with the Marlins over the last few seasons, mostly as a result of injuries.
