Donnie Murphy part of roster pinch

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2013) With the Brewers adding infielder Yuniesky Betancourt to the roster, third baseman Donnie Murphy is expected to be discarded by the club, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Murphy, in camp as a non-roster invitee, had a .239 batting average with two homers and six RBI in 24 Cactus League games.

"I've talked to Donnie Murphy and told him there would probably be no opportunity for him on the big-league club, general manager Doug Melvin said. "Yuni came in and back up the three infield positions, give us a bat off the bench. He's got more experience than Donnie and we thought that's important."

Donnie Murphy still battling for a spot

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/22/2013) With a little more than a week left in spring training and a spot on the roster not at all guaranteed, Brewers infielder Donnie Murphy had his best game of the spring Thursday. Murphy homered and hit a double in a loss to the White Sox, raising his batting average to .237 with four extra-base hits in 38 at bats. Murphy is battling for a spot as a utility man, and has been more impressive with his glove than his bat so far.

"He's done a nice job for us defensively," manager Ron Roenicke told MLB.com. "I know he'd like to swing the bat batter, and we feel like he will."

Murphy has been unable to take advantage of a number of opportunities with the Marlins over the last few seasons, mostly as a result of injuries.
