Gonzalez elected free agency in October after missing most of the season due to injuries. Gonzalez pitched just 18 innings last season, with a 7.50 ERA.

Gonzalez has been out since late May with a shoulder issue. With the team acquiring Matt Pagnozzi, they needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

 Gonzalez has a 7.50 ERA in eight games.

(5/31/2013) The Astros announced Friday that relief pitcher Edgar Gonzalez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder.

Gonzalez has been battling shoulder soreness in recent days, pitching just once (on May 25) since May 18. He has posted a 7.50 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 18 innings this season. Reliever Josh Fields was activated from the disabled list in a corresponding move.

(5/12/2013) The Astros announced Sunday they signed reliever Edgar Gonzalez to a major-league contract. Gonzalez takes the roster spot of Philip Humber, who was designated for assignment.

Gonzalez was with Houston earlier this season before being designated for assignment in early April. He was picked up by the Blue Jays and made a few relief appearances before being taken off the 40-man roster last week. Gonzalez has a 7.88 ERA in three relief appearances this season.

Gonzalez allowed five runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out one. He threw 81 pitches.

Wells was claimed by the Blue Jays on April 10. Gonzalez pitched just once for the Blue Jays, on Thursday, when he allowed three hits and two runs over 3.1 innings of work.

Toronto transferred reliever Dustin McGowan to the 60-day disabled list in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Gonzalez. 

Gonzalez went 3-1 with a 5.04 ERA over six starts for the Astros last season.
