History vs. Mets' Colon likely earned Jonny Gomes start vs. RHP

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/23/2015) Braves outfielder Jonny Gomes was in the starting lineup Thursday against the Mets for the fourth time in five games. Although, his history against Mets starting pitcher Bartolo Colon probably had something to do with it.

Gomes, who is better against left-handed pitchers, is batting .381 (8 for 21) with one double, one triple, three home runs and three RBI in his career against Colon.

For the season, however, Gomes is batting .158 (3 for 19) against right-handers, as opposed to .500 (3 for 6) against lefties.

Braves' Jonny Gomes drives in four runs Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/19/2015) Braves left fielder Jonny Gomes went 1 for 2 with a walk and four RBI in his team's 5-2 win over the Blue Jays Sunday.

Gomes opened up the scoring by clearing the bases with a three-run double in the first inning. He then chipped in his team's fifth run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the third inning, giving the Braves plenty of breathing space in the win, which pushed their record to 8-4.

Gomes has hit .261/.333/.565 with two home runs and seven RBI in 23 at-bats.

Braves to start Maybin, Gomes, Pierzynski Wednesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/7/2015) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez plans to start center fielder Cameron Maybin, left fielder Jonny Gomes and catcher A.J. Pierzynski Wednesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Marlins are opening the season with three righties on the mound, limiting Gonzalez's options in building his lineup. However, all three players are set to play Wednesday, and Maybin and Gomes could be back in the lineup Friday, with the team set to face lefty Jon Niese.

Jonny Gomes warns Hanley Ramirez about playing LF for Red Sox

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/17/2015) Hanley Ramirez is expected to play left field for the Red Sox this season, and a former left fielder has some advice for him.

Jonny Gomes visited JetBlue Park, where the Sox play their spring training games, as a member of the visiting Braves. A veteran of playing the Green Monster for the Sox, Gomes warned Ramirez that the replica wall in Florida is "way different" from the real thing.

"I think I played that wall pretty well," Gomes said, according to the Boston Herald's Jason Mastrodonato, "but I think the cat is out of the bag that that wall is way different. From the padding to the net, the dimensions, feet-wise, are the same. I wouldn’t be in any hurry to master JetBlue’s wall for Fenway’s wall, but I guess it’s a good starting point."

"There’s nothing like that in the game, nothing like that in high school, college, minor league ball," Gomes said. "You can’t just go out there and be like, ‘OK, I’ll nail this.’ There’s definitely a method to the madness."

The key, Gomes said, is for Ramirez to work hard at getting to know the Monster. "Being extremely open and having the work ethic to learn it," Gomes said. "That wall hasn’t moved in 100-plus years and balls are bouncing off that wall pretty similarly to the way they did 100 years ago. At the same time, it’s so foreign from anywhere else. It’s not like grabbing a wall and throwing a ball off it. There’s a lot to be learned off that wall."

Braves' Gonzalez: Jonny Gomes could be in 'soft platoon' in LF

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/25/2015) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Wednesday outfielder Jonny Gomes could be in a "soft platoon" in left field, where he starts against all left-handed pitchers and also starts against some right-handers, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Braves' Fredi Gonzalez begins to ponder options at cleanup spot

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/5/2015) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he is leaning toward batting Jonny Gomes or Chris Johnson cleanup against left-handed starters, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He might even move Freddie Freeman to fourth against right-handed starters, but Gonzalez is not sure yet if that will happen.

Justin Upton, who was traded to San Diego in the offseason, started a team-high 120 games as the Braves' cleanup hitter in 2014. Johnson made 17 starts in the cleanup spot last season.

As a team, the Braves hit .255 with a .444 slugging percentage, .763 OPS, 25 home runs, 37 doubles and a team-best 102 RBI out of the fourth spot in the lineup last season.

Jonny Gomes: I'm braced to leave Boston

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7/28/2014) Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes is taking trade talks with a grain of salt. He has experience to help himself emotionally after having been dealt to Washington from Cincinnati in the midseason of 2011.

Gomes is attractive to teams seeking to bolster their lineups against left-handers, against whom he boasts a .315/.410/.450 stat line. He is not eager to be shipped out, but is better prepared for it than he was earlier in his career.

"The first time I got traded, it was extremely mised emotions of a team, not necessarily giving up, but feels like you're replaceable," he told WEEI.com. "At the same time, out of all the guys available in the trade market, this other team picked you. You never want to be given up on. But there are situations where you're not being given up on but the business side stands out."

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Three players ejected from Sunday's Red Sox/Rays game

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/25/2014) Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes, Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar and Rays infielder Sean Rodriguez were all ejected from Sunday's game for their roles in a benches-clearing altercation.

The incident started after Escobar exchanged words with the Red Sox bench after he took third base on a fielder's indifference in the bottom of the seventh inning. The benches cleared as Escobar became more animated and moved toward the Boston dugout. Gomes then rushed in from left field and shoved Escobar, which escalated the ordeal.

Gomes was the first player ejected from the game. The umps then decided to toss Escobar. Finally, it was announced Rodriguez, who put Tampa Bay ahead 6-3 in the seventh inning with a pinch-hit home run, was also ejected. Escobar added a two-RBI double in the seventh before being tossed from the game. Gomes had a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, which tied the game at 3.

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

More typical is that Gomes is in the lineup against left-hander Wei-Yin Chen. He has typically thrived against southpaws.
