Manager: Jonny Gomes has earned full-time job in left

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/31/2014) Jonny Gomes hasn't been a full-time starter since 2010 - but that's about to change. John Farrell said as much on Saturday, telling the Boston Herald that the veteran has "taken the job."

The 33-year-old Gomes, who had been considered a platoon player specializing against left-handed pitching, is batting just .194 against righties this year with the Red Sox. His overall numbers are only comparable to what he has achieved in recent years.

Three players ejected from Sunday's Red Sox/Rays game

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/25/2014) Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes, Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar and Rays infielder Sean Rodriguez were all ejected from Sunday's game for their roles in a benches-clearing altercation.

The incident started after Escobar exchanged words with the Red Sox bench after he took third base on a fielder's indifference in the bottom of the seventh inning. The benches cleared as Escobar became more animated and moved toward the Boston dugout. Gomes then rushed in from left field and shoved Escobar, which escalated the ordeal.

Gomes was the first player ejected from the game. The umps then decided to toss Escobar. Finally, it was announced Rodriguez, who put Tampa Bay ahead 6-3 in the seventh inning with a pinch-hit home run, was also ejected. Escobar added a two-RBI double in the seventh before being tossed from the game. Gomes had a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, which tied the game at 3.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/31/2014) The Red Sox announced before Monday's season opener against the Red Sox they placed outfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Victorino's absence meant Daniel Nava hit leadoff and started in right field, and Mike Carp got the start over Jonny Gomes in left field. Carp hit fifth for the Red Sox.

Jonny Gomes 'ready for 162-plus' games

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/18/2014) While Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes turned into a starter during the postseason in 2013, he will probably revert to being a platoon player during the 2014 regular season. Though, Gomes will always welcome more playing time, per MLB.com.

"The name of the game is health for me -- try and be prepared to be ready for 162-plus," said Gomes. "I was last year -- didn't go on the DL, didn't come out of a game for a physical reason, didn't have a physical reason stop me from starting. With that being said, keep my health up and hopefully everything else pans out."

Gomes, a late addition to the lineup after Shane Victorino was scratched with a back issue, grounded into a double play in his first at-bat, then drew a walk to put two men on with no outs in the fifth inning. He came to the plate with two on and two outs in the sixth inning and delivered the big three-run home run to give his team a 4-1 lead. He added another walk in the eighth inning.

Jonny Gomes likely for Game 1 lineup

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(10/21/2013) Red Sox manager John Farrell hasn't made out his starting lineup for Wednesday's World Series opener, but according to the Boston Herald, he appears inclined to start Jonny Gomes in left field. Farrell tipped his hand, telling the Herald, "Daniel Nava is certainly not forgotten...but (we) can't go away from maybe a little bit of momentum that a certain lineup has provided for us."

Though Nava has played more frequently against right-handed starting pitchers this season, the Red Sox have been 6-0 when Gomes has started this postseason, so he appears likely to get the nod when the Red Sox face the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright in Game 1.
