Corey Hart yearning to aid Mariners in quest for playoffs

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/5/2014) Mariners designated hitter Corey Hart doesn't want to make 2014 a second straight lost season. He understands that the only way to avoid it is to contribute down the stretch of a pennant race.

Hart did that Wednesday night when he slammed a tie-breaking home run in his first at-bat since Aug. 1 in a win at Oakland.

"I told (Lloyd McClendon) that whenever he feels I need to get in there, I'm in there," Hart said via the Tacoma News Tribune. "I just want to be productive when I get up there. Have good at-bats."

Hart has been plagued by injuries for two seasons - he lost all of 2013 with Milwaukee to two major knee surgeries before signing a $6 million free agent contract with Seattle in December that included a slew of performances bonuses. But Hart has been out most of this year with various injuries. He owns a stat line of .201/.274/.322 in just 214 at-bats.

Corey Hart, Michael Saunders to begin rehab Friday

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/19/2014) Reinforcements are on the way for the Mariners, who could have three major-league players working at Triple-A Tacoma this weekend.

Manager Lloyd McClendon told MLB.com Wednesday outfielders Michael Saunders (shoulder) and Corey Hart (hamstring) could begin their rehab assignments at Tacoma Friday.

Saunders is likely to return more quickly than Hart, who has to work his way back into playing shape after sitting out all of last season and missing part of spring training. He will be worked back into action relatively slowly.

"Hart will DH mainly to start off, get him going again, get his legs under him, then eventually play some first base and outfield," McClendon said. "Obviously when he comes back here, I want him swinging the bat well. But he needs some at-bats. He's been out a significant amount of time. It's not that easy up here. He's got to get some at-bats and get himself going again. And once he's ready, we'll bring him back."
