Corey Hart is set to man the position instead.

Alvarez has just one hit in 12 at-bats against lefties this season. But Hart is 1-for-13 against them in 2015.

(5/13/2015) With a left-hander on the mound Wednesday, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has juggled his lineup for the matchup against the Phillies.

Left-handed batters Gregory Polanco and Pedro Alvarez are out of the lineup, while Corey Hart covers right field and Sean Rodriguez handles first base. Josh Harrison will move up to the leadoff spot in the order.

Second baseman Neil Walker is sliding down to the seventh spot in the lineup. This is the first time all season he has hit lower than sixth in the order.

Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez to miss second start of year

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4/28/2015) Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez is not listed in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game. It's just the second time this year that Alvarez has missed a start at first.

Corey Hart replaces Alvarez at first. It's his second start there this season and second in the last seven games. He'll bat cleanup.

The Pirates are +107 money line underdogs at the Cubs.

Pirates outfielder Starling Marte out of the lineup Tuesday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/14/2015) Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has decided to go with Corey Hart in right field Tuesday and moved Gregory Polanco to left, pushing Starling Marte to the bench, the team announced.

Hart has made one start so far this season and is hitting .500 in six at-bats. He is a career .269 hitter while playing right field and .268 while batting fifth.

"He's just being challenged right now," Hurdle said. "We've seen Starling get in some funks. He's been able to work his way out of them. One of the ways you help him is just to sit him down, give him a chance to catch his breath."

He is hitting just .115 with 14 strikeouts in 26 at-bats this season. The Pirates are currently the favorites (-120) over the Tigers Tuesday.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

"It felt good to get back on the field," Hart said.

Hart underwent microfracture surgery on both knees two years ago but said he feels strong coming into camp.

"I don't have a lot of cartilage in my right knee. My left knee is fine," Hart said. "I feel like (microfracture) definitely benefited me. … Last year it took almost the whole offseason to (heal). This year I feel strong."

Hart will be looking to serve in a platoon role at first base or potential as a reserve corner outfielder this season.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/8/2015) Pirates first baseman Corey Hart (foot) will play in a "B" game Monday, serving as the designated hitter in his team's matchup with the Twins, MLB.com reports.

Hart cut his foot on a hot tub at the team's spring complex and required stitches to treat the injury. He was able to take grounders Thursday, and the issue shouldn't keep him from being available for the start of the regular season.

Corey Hart preparing for comeback year with Pirates

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/25/2015) New Pirates first baseman Corey Hart has been through a lot. He's still recovering from both surgically repaired left and right knees. The 33-year-old knows it has slowed him down, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"Speed was definitely a big part of my game," Hart said. "But, right now instead of being tall and skinny, I filled out a little bit, so the weight is there and the knees are there."

Manager Clint Hurdle wants to be able to utilize Hart both at first base and in the outfield.

"I know the kid can play outfield," Hurdle said. "We've seen him play the outfield. We've also seen him post up at first base. We've seen the work he's done in the batter's box. We felt it was a very good player to take a risk on."

Corey Hart yearning to aid Mariners in quest for playoffs

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/5/2014) Mariners designated hitter Corey Hart doesn't want to make 2014 a second straight lost season. He understands that the only way to avoid it is to contribute down the stretch of a pennant race.

Hart did that Wednesday night when he slammed a tie-breaking home run in his first at-bat since Aug. 1 in a win at Oakland.

"I told (Lloyd McClendon) that whenever he feels I need to get in there, I'm in there," Hart said via the Tacoma News Tribune. "I just want to be productive when I get up there. Have good at-bats."

Hart has been plagued by injuries for two seasons - he lost all of 2013 with Milwaukee to two major knee surgeries before signing a $6 million free agent contract with Seattle in December that included a slew of performances bonuses. But Hart has been out most of this year with various injuries. He owns a stat line of .201/.274/.322 in just 214 at-bats.

Hart struggled in his first stint as an active player for Seattle with a .209 average and just five home runs in 139 at-bats.

Corey Hart set to begin outfield work on rehab

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(7/2/2014) Mariners designated hitter Corey Hart is now hitting .306 through nine games in his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma.

He has served as a designated hitter in each game so far, but manager Lloyd McClendon told MLB.com he will begin working in the outfield in the coming days. That could be the final hurdle for Hart to return from a hamstring injury.

"He's going to play the outfield [Wednesday] and see how healthy he is," McClendon said. "We'll go from there and make an evaluation."
