Marlins 3B Don Kelly undergoes Tommy John surgery

(7/18/2015) Marlins third baseman Don Kelly recently underwent Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him for the rest of the season, reports MLB.com.

Kelly sustained a significant tear in his elbow. He only played in two games before suffering the injury.

(4/16/2015) Marlins infielder Don Kelly and catcher Jeff Mathis will not require surgery to repair their fractured fingers after seeing hand specialists, the Associated Press reports. Both players suffered their injuries to the same finger on the same day and were placed on the disabled list earlier this week.

(4/13/2015) The Marlins placed pitcher Henderson Alvarez (shoulder), infielder Don Kelly (finger) and catcher Jeff Mathis (finger) on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Alvarez went for an MRI Monday after dealing with arm troubles in Sunday's start, and he's been listed as suffering from shoulder inflammation. Both Kelly and Mathis broke ring fingers in Sunday's game.

The Marlins also transferred pitcher Aaron Crow (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list, clearing a 40-man roster spot for Reid Brignac, who joins Carter Capps and J.T. Realmuto as the Marlins' active-roster additions Monday.

(4/13/2015) The Marlins are expected to announce two roster moves Monday after infielder Don Kelly and catcher Jeff Mathis both fractured their right ring fingers Sunday, the Palm Beach Post reports.

"We talked about keeping guys healthy all spring and we were able to do it," manager Mike Redmond said Sunday. "It’s one of those things in baseball that happens. Unfortunately, it happened on the same day to two guys. We’ve got to be able to pick up, patch it together and move on."

Mathis believes he will be out four-to-six weeks while recovering. Kelly is expected to see a hand specialist.

Kelly left the game in the third inning. He went 0 for 1 at the plate in his long plate appearance. The injury occurred when Kelly was fielding a grounder. 

Kelly was replaced in the field by Donovan Solano.

"We would've loved to bring him back," general manager Dave Dombrowski said. The club reportedly offered Kelly a minor-league deal, but he declined the offer in order to sign with Miami. "He thought his opportunity to make a major-league club was better with Miami than it was here this year," Dombrowski added.

Reed yielded 39 hits in 32 1/3 innings while compiling a 4.18 ERA in 2014. Kelly managed a stat line of .245/.288/.332 and was held without a home run after averaging six the previous four seasons.

Those were among a slew of moves made by the Tigers. Utility man Don Kelly and right-hander Evan Reed have been outrighted off their 40-man roster while they have promoted outfield Wynton Bernard .

Hunter has been no more than mediocre recently. He has seven hits in the last six games, but only one extra-base hit in the last seven. He has not homered since hitting three in consecutive games April 4-6.
