Mitch Maier signs with Royals

(5/1/2014) The Royals have signed outfielder Mitch Maier , according to the Kansas City Star.

Maier will report to Double-A. He's played 360 games in the majors, all of which came with Kansas City. Maier has a career .248 average over 977 at-bats.

Maier had been in the team's minor-league system after being cut during spring. Maier last appeared in the majors in 2012. He hit .172 in 64 at-bats with the Royals this season.

(3/18/2014) The Cubs optioned five players to Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, including outfielder Brett Jackson, infielders Josh Vitters and Christian Villanueva and pitchers Zac Rosscup and Arodys Vizcaino.

The team also reassigned catcher Rafael Lopez, outfielder Mitch Maier and pitcher Armando Rivero to minor-league camp.

He will remain in a splint for now and his chances of making the opening day roster appear over.

Hardy's line drive and was removed. "I feel like I jammed it and kind of rolled it under me," said Maier, who is expected to have X-rays. He finished 1 for 1 before the early departure.
