(7/18/2006) Prosecutors won't charge Reds pitcher Brian Shackelford, who was arrested in Milwaukee earlier this month on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault, the Reds announced Tuesday. "I have said from the beginning that the claims made against me were absolutely false and I am pleased that the District Attorney's office in Milwaukee, after careful review, agrees that there is no merit to these allegations," Shackelford said in a statement.

(7/6/2006) Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brian Shackelford was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault. The 29-year-old player was arrested shortly after midnight at Miller Park, where the Reds played the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night, police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said. She declined to provide details on the arrest other than to say it involved a woman Monday. "It's an ongoing criminal investigation," she said. The Reds later optioned the pitcher to the minors.

Working in short and middle relief last season, the 29-year-old Oklahoman was 1-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 37 appearances, his first year in the majors after four years in the minors. This spring, Shackelford struggled with his command and was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 12 innings. He walked seven. "He has been inconsistent with throwing strikes," manager Jerry Narron said. "He has done a good job against left-handers, but to have a left-hander is a luxury, and he has to come in and get right-handers, too."
