Rays to give Mike Fontenot another chance

(3/28/2014) Veteran infielder Mike Fontenot was signed by the Rays on Friday after his release from the Nationals, per the Tampa Bay Times.

The 33-year-old Fontenot has lost playing time since serving as a reserve with the Cubs and Giants from 2007 to 2011. He spent all of last season with the Rays Triple-A affiliate in Durham.

Fontenot had been reassigned to minor-league camp earlier in the spring. He's now free to find work with any other team. Fontenot hit .289 in 97 at-bats last year.

(3/17/2014) The Nationals made a some roster moves Monday. They optioned outfielder Eury Perez and outfielder Steven Souza to Triple-A Syracuse, while optioning pitcher Sammy Solis to Double-A Harrisburg.

Also, the Nationals reassigned infielder Mike Fontenot, outfielder Brian Goodwin and catcher Koyie Hill to minor-league camp.

(1/9/2014) The Nationals signed infielder Mike Fontenot to a minor-league deal, which includes an invitation to spring training, a source told The Washington Post. Fontenot spent the 2013 season playing for Triple-A Durham, batting .264 with four home runs, 32 doubles and 42 RBI in 120 games.

Fontenot has played for the Cubs, Giants and Phillies in his major-league career. He has a .265 average, .332 on-base percentage, .401 slugging percentage and .734 OPS in 582 games.
