DeSclafani, Marquis, Iglesias join Cueto, Leake in Reds rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/18/2015) Reds starting pitchers Anthony DeSclafani, Jason Marquis and Raisel Iglesias have secured spots in the rotation to begin the season, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. They join Johnny Cueto and Mike Leake.

Homer Bailey is still recovering from September elbow surgery and will start the season on the disabled list. Paul Maholm, who was also competing for a spot in the rotation, has been told he will now compete for a spot in the bullpen.

"I think we have a pretty good idea of where we're headed," manager Bryan Price said, per MLB.com. "That being said, we still have 2 1/2 weeks of spring training games to go to make sure, No. 1, that we're healthy, and No. 2, that how we feel now remains the same."

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(3/11/2015) Reds pitcher Paul Maholm allowed one hit and one walk over three scoreless innings during Wednesday's spring training game against the Royals.

"I was pretty much just mixing up speeds, keeping the ball down, getting ground balls and letting the guys make plays," Maholm said. "I threw a good curveball. I threw a good slider, but it was a ball. Overall, I was just trying to get ground balls."

Maholm is trying to earn a spot in the Reds starting rotation.

Six pitchers vying for last two spots in Reds' rotation

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/9/2015) Six pitchers are competing for the fourth and fifth spots in the Reds rotation, and a week into spring training games, the races are still too close to call.

The half dozen pitchers have combined to give up one earned run so far this spring.

Lefthander Tony Cingrani hit 94 MPH with his fastball, showing that last season's shoulder trouble is behind him.

Righthander Anthony DeSclafani gave up an unearned run in his first start. "I felt like everything was working," he said.

Manager Bryan Price declared Cingrani and DeScalfani the early favorites.RHP Jason Marquis has thrown five hitless innings to work his way into the mix. RHP Raisel Iglesias and LHPs David Holmberg and Paul Maholm have also been effective.

"At this point in time, we've got a great list," Price said to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It would be a very difficult challenge to feel like we've got it right if we had to make our team today because so many of these guys are performing at such a high level."

Reds' Paul Maholm, Jason Marquis competing for rotation spot

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(3/1/2015) If pitcher Homer Bailey is not on the Opening Day roster, Reds manager Bryan Price indicated his spot in the rotation could go to Paul Maholm or Jason Marquis, reports Cincinnati.com.

"An example would be if Homer is not able to go. If we're healthy, that means Cueto and Leake and three spots in the rotation – two that we think could potentially be filled by young pitchers in Cingrani and DeSclafani," Price said. "That to me suggests that a veteran guy in that other spot would be fairly important, someone who knows how to manage a game and has pitched in the league and has had success in the league. I think that's why guys like Jason and Paul are here."
