Josh Beckett backs into starting spot over Paul Maholm

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3/29/2014) Neither Josh Beckett nor Paul Maholm enjoyed a sterling spring, but the former has emerged with the Dodgers fifth rotation spot. Apparently, it was by default.

Beckett had his upper right rib removed to prevent it from pressuring a nerve that was causing numbness in his pitching hand. He performed poorly in 8 1/3 innings early this spring, compiling a 5.63 ERA and 1.32 WHIP before injuring his thumb by slamming it in a clubhouse door. He was placed on the disabled list, but is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game Monday.

Maholm fared no better, giving up six earned runs in 7 2/3 spring innings with a 1.57 WHIP. The result is that Beckett, whose early-season status remains unknown, is the fifth starter.

"That's the way we've played it," Don Mattingly told the Los Angeles Times. "We always felt like Josh had the upper hand. But we really didn't know where the health was going to be, how that was going to go. ... But Josh has seemed to cross every hurdle at this point."

Beckett made his first appearance since suffering finger numbness that led to thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in May of 2013. He allowed a single to Yonder Alonso for his only blemish of the afternoon. He struck out three in his first spring action.

Maholm, who was dealing with elbow tenderness in camp, allowed only one hit -- a leadoff single to Cameron Maybin in the fourth inning. He did not issue a walk or a strikeout in a 3-3 tie.
