Scott Kazmir among Indians' free agents

(11/6/2013) In addition to starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, who was extended a qualifying offer, the Indians have had several players declare free agency, including starting pitcher Scott Kazmir, relief pitcher Matt Albers, relief pitcher Rich Hill, catcher Kelly Shoppach and relief pitcher Joe Smith.

Indians add five players to roster

(9/1/2013) The Indians made five promotions to the roster as part of September callups Sunday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Added to the roster for the stretch run were right-handed pitchers Preston Guilmet and Blake Wood and lefty Nick Hagadone. The Tribe also purchased the contracts of catcher Kelly Shoppach and infielder Jose Ramirez from Columbus and Double-A Akron, respectively.

The 20-year-old Ramirez hit .272 over 113 games for Akron this season with 38 stolen bases. All of the relievers spent some time up in the majors this season, except for Wood, who last pitched in the big leagues in 2011 with the Royals.

Shoppach will reunite with the club. He played in Cleveland from 2006 to 2009. Through 107 at-bats with the Mariners, Shoppach is hitting .196.

The team is looking for catching depth for September, and isn't comfortable with the catchers in their system. Shoppach is hitting .196/.293/.346 in 107 at-bats with the Mariners.

(8/28/2013) The Pirates released catcher Kelly Shoppach from Triple-A Indianapolis Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Shoppach went 5 for 26 with one double and two RBI for Indianapolis after hitting .196/.293/.346 with three home runs and nine RBI in 107 at-bats with the Mariners earlier in the season.

(7/31/2013) Nationals catcher Kelly Shoppach has exercised his out clause and will become a free-agent, according to ESPN.

Shoppach was released by the Mariners in late June, and picked up by the Nationals. He did not appear in a major-league game with Washington. There aren't thought to be too many talented, available catchers on the market, and he could be a nice fall-back option for teams that don't want to give up prospects.

Shoppach was briefly the club's starter when Jesus Montero was struggling earlier in the year. With Mike Zunino now up with the Mariners, they didn't need Shoppach. He was hitting just .196/.293/.346 in 107 at-bats this year. The team signed Henry Blanco to take his place.

(5/23/2013) The Mariners are expected to demote catcher Jesus Montero to Triple-A Tacoma, according to The News Tribune, which means Kelly Shoppach takes over as the starting catcher. Jesus Sucre is being recalled from Tacoma to be the backup catcher.

Shoppach, who has started the last three games at catcher, is batting .229 through 23 games. In fact, he's batting .163 (7 for 43) in his last 13 games.

(5/12/2013) Mariners catcher Kelly Shoppach homered for the second time this season and drove in two runs Saturday against the Athletics. Shoppach, who backs up starter Jesus Montero, is batting .264 with a .472 slugging percentage, five doubles and seven RBI in 18 games.

(4/17/2013) Mariners manager Eric Wedge plans to give catcher Kelly Shoppach more time behind the plate with Jesus Montero off to a slow start. Shoppach has hit .389/.476/.667 with one home run in 18 at-bats this season.

“We’re going to mix-and-match with that for a while and hopefully keep Shopp going, but also help to get Jesus going,” Wedge told MLB.com.

Montero has hit just .211/.211/.237 through 38 at-bats.


Kelly Shoppach draws Thursday start

Shoppach will bat eighth and face Athletics pitcher A.J. Griffin. He'll not only give Jesus Montero a day-off, but he'll also be calling the game for rookie Brandon Maurer. Manager Eric Wedge may have gone with the veteran to calm Maurer before his first major-league start.
