Tony Sanchez was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to clear roster space for Stewart's arrival.

(4/9/2015) Pirates catcher Chris Stewart went 0 for 2 with a walk in the first game of his rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona Thursday.

Stewart initially injured his hamstring on March 9, and the issue caused him to open the season on the disabled list. He was also caught trying to steal second base in the third inning Thursday, and ended up catching eight innings before being removed for a pinch hitter in the ninth. Provided he doesn't encounter any setbacks, he could be back with the team soon.

Pirates C Tony Sanchez could break camp on 25-man roster

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/19/2015) Chris Stewart's pain could once again be Tony Sanchez's benefit.

With Stewart's hamstring injury keeping him out for at least two more weeks, Sanchez will likely make the Pirates' Opening Day Roster. Also helping Sanchez is the fact he's had a teriffic spring, batting .526 with a 1.518 OPS.

"It's way too early to tell if a DL assignment will be required [for Stewart]," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. "The nice part is, Sanchez has had a great camp on all sides of the game, and if Chris is not ready, we feel strongly about having somebody who can step in."

A year ago, Stewart had a knee injury that allowed Sanchez to break camp on the 25-man roster as one of the Pirates' catchers. But Stewart did have minor knee surgery and returned in only one month.

Even so, the Pirates could once again be relying on Sanchez on the roster in April.

"Our focus is on continuing to help Sanchez be ready, if needed," Huntington summed up. "And if [Stewart] is ready to go, we'll have a lot of catching depth."

When healthy, Stewart -- who has been sidelined since March 9 -- is expected to split catcher duties with Francisco Cervelli. Stewart is just 1 for 5 (.200) in three spring games.

"Francisco was an aggressive acquire for us," Huntington said, "and Chris did a heck of a job for us last year. We feel very comfortable with the defensive side, and we feel Francisco has some bat upside.

"At this point in time, we would feel very comfortable if opening day were tomorrow and this was our catching mix."
