Cubs swap Dave Sappelt for Ryan Sweeney

(5/6/2013) The Cubs recalled outfielder Ryan Sweeney from Triple-A Iowa on Monday and optioned Dave Sappelt to the same affiliate.

Sweeney batted .337 with six homers and six RBI in 23 games at Triple-A.

Sappelt hit just .178 with one RBI in 45 at-bats in the majors.

(5/6/2013) The Cubs have promoted outfielder Ryan Sweeney from Triple-A Iowa.

Sweeney signed a minor-league deal early in April, and has been playing well in the minors. In 83 at-bats, Sweeney had a .337 average. Dave Sappelt was optioned to make room for Sweeney.

(5/5/2013) It took nearly one month after signing a minor-league deal with the Cubs, but outfielder Ryan Sweeney is expected to be promoted from from Triple-A Iowa prior to Monday's game against the Rangers.

"It's a good feeling," Sweeney told the Des Moines Register. "I put in some hard work down here and hopefully, I'll go up there and transfer it over."

Sweeney hit .337 with six homers and 16 RBI in 83 at-bats since signing a minor-league deal on April 2.

Sweeney batted just .217 during spring training before being released by the Red Sox over the weekend.

The club declined to purchase Sweeney's contract this week and it doesn't appear there will be a roster spot available for Sweeney with Jackie Bradley in the lead for the final outfield spot.

Sweeney hit just .213/.308/.239 in 52 spring plate appearances, but he won't accept a minor-league assignment from the Red Sox.

(3/27/2013) Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney will not accept a minor-league assignment if he doesn’t make the opening day roster, according to WEEI. With the emergence of Jackie Bradley Jr. and the offseason acquisition of Mike Carp, Sweeney’s spot on the roster has been in jeopardy this spring. If Sweeney does not make the roster, he’ll have 24 hours to make his final decision.

(2/22/2013) Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney told WEEI.com on Thursday that he has changed his swing, thanks to advice given to him by Hall of Famer Rod Carew in the offseason. “I changed my lower half and how I’m getting to balls. I just feel like I’m ready to hit every pitch and I’m taking good swings and I have a good bat path to the baseball," Sweeney said. "I just feel like I can put better swings on the ball."
