Ryan Sweeney hits rare home run

(7/8/2014) Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney hit his first home run of the season Tuesday, in a 4-2 loss to the Reds.

Sweeney went 2 for 5 in the game, including a solo home run in the sixth inning to cut the score to one run. He also struck out twice in the loss, while raising his batting line for the season to .220/.260/.285.

(7/4/2014) The Cubs received tremendous production from their first two hitters Friday in a defeat of Washington - and both of them roamed the outfield.

Leadoff hitter Ryan Sweeney and Justin Ruggiano, who batted behind him, combined for five hits and five runs. The latter slugged a solo homer in the third and run-scoring single in the ninth.

Ruggiano has been on a tear with 12 hits in his last 27 at-bats and has blasted off in successive games.

Sweeney managed two hits against the Cardinals, but that merely served to raise his average to .200.

The deal is worth $3.5 million over two seasons. Sweeney is set to make $1.5 million in 2014 and 2015, and will have a $2.5 million option or $500,000 buyout following the 2015 season. Sweeney hit .266/.324/.448 in 192 at-bats.

(9/1/2013) The Cubs made a few roster moves Sunday as rosters expanded. The Cubs activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney (rib) and infielder Luis Valbuena (oblique) from the disabled list, while recalling pitcher Alberto Cabrera from Triple-A Iowa.

In order to make room for Sweeney on the 40-man roster, reliever Eduardo Sanchez was designated for assignment. Sweeney was on the 60-day disabled list.
