Sweeney is dealing with a knee injury, but is OK to play. Sweeney left Sunday's game in the second inning after fielding a ball. He hit .266/.324/.448 in 192 at-bats last year.

Sweeney left after fielding a ball in the second inning. Trainers came to check on him, and it was determined he would leave the game. He was replaced by Aaron Cunningham in right. The team hasn't announced the injury at this time.

(10/8/2013) The Cubs have signed outfielder Ryan Sweeney to a two-year extension, according to USA Today. 

The deal is worth $3.5 million over two seasons. Sweeney is set to make $1.5 million in 2014 and 2015, and will have a $2.5 million option or $500,000 buyout following the 2015 season. Sweeney hit .266/.324/.448 in 192 at-bats.

(9/1/2013) The Cubs made a few roster moves Sunday as rosters expanded. The Cubs activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney (rib) and infielder Luis Valbuena (oblique) from the disabled list, while recalling pitcher Alberto Cabrera from Triple-A Iowa.

In order to make room for Sweeney on the 40-man roster, reliever Eduardo Sanchez was designated for assignment. Sweeney was on the 60-day disabled list.

Sweeney hit the 15-day DL Sunday, but it appears the injury will keep him out of action longer. The move is backdated to June 30. Sweeney is hitting .295/.342/.527 in 112 at-bats.

(6/27/2013) Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney homered for the second time in three games and extended his modest hitting streak to five games Wednesday at Milwaukee. Sweeney is batting .368 (7 for 19) with two home runs, three doubles and seven RBI in his last five games.

Prior to his five-game hit streak, Sweeney was mired in a 4-for-25 slump (.160) over an eight-game span from June 13-20.

Sweeney entered Sunday with seven RBI in 89 at-bats but nearly doubled the total in one game. His home run was his third.

Sweeney batted .337 with six homers and six RBI in 23 games at Triple-A.

Sweeney signed a minor-league deal early in April, and has been playing well in the minors. In 83 at-bats, Sweeney had a .337 average. Dave Sappelt was optioned to make room for Sweeney.

(5/5/2013) It took nearly one month after signing a minor-league deal with the Cubs, but outfielder Ryan Sweeney is expected to be promoted from from Triple-A Iowa prior to Monday's game against the Rangers.

"It's a good feeling," Sweeney told the Des Moines Register. "I put in some hard work down here and hopefully, I'll go up there and transfer it over."

Sweeney hit .337 with six homers and 16 RBI in 83 at-bats since signing a minor-league deal on April 2.

With the emergence of Jackie Bradley Jr. and the offseason acquisition of Mike Carp, Sweeney’s spot on the roster has been in jeopardy this spring. If Sweeney does not make the roster, he’ll have 24 hours to make his final decision.

I just feel like I’m ready to hit every pitch and I’m taking good swings and I have a good bat path to the baseball," Sweeney said. "I just feel like I can put better swings on the ball."
