The 32-year-old Gwynn is coming off a miserable season in which he compiled a .152/.264/.190 stat line.


Phillies announce September roster moves

(9/1/2014) The Phillies announced their September callups on Monday.

Before announcing the moves, Philadelphia transferred pitcher Cliff Lee to the 60-day DL to create room on the 40-man roster. The team recalled infielder Cesar Hernandez, catcher Cameron Rupp and right-handed pitchers Luis Garcia and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Additionally, the team purchased the contracts of infielder Maikel Franco and outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr.. Right-hander Mike Adams was also activated off the disabled list.


Phillies re-sign Tony Gwynn to minor-league deal

(8/3/2014) The Phillies have re-signed outfielder Tony Gwynn to a minor-league deal, the team announced Sunday.

The organization parted ways with Gwynn earlier this week but decided to bring him back into the fold. He has hit .163/.281/.204 in 98 at-bats with the big-league club.

(7/21/2014) The Phillies made a slew of roster moves before Monday's game against the Giants, which included activating starting pitcher Cliff Lee (elbow) off the 60-day disabled list.

The Phillies also activated infielder Reid Brignac (ankle) and catcher Wil Nieves (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list.

Outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. was designated for assignment, while infielder Cesar Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Catcher Koyie Hill was outrighted off the roster.

(6/16/2014) With the death of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, the Phillies put outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. on the bereavement list. Philadelphia called up outfielder Aaron Altherr from Double-A Reading to take Gwynn's roster spot.

Gwynn's father had 3,141 career hits and made 15 All-Star games in his 20-year career with the Padres. He died of cancer at age 54.

(5/21/2014) Phillies outfielder Tony Gwynn started his second game in a row Wednesday against the Marlins, the first time he has been in the lineup in consecutive games since mid-April.

Gwynn, hitting just .180 on the season, was in the lineup for his glove more than anything, though manager Ryne Sandberg told MLB.com he always wanted to ride a successful lineup after Tuesday's 6-5 win.

"It was a lineup that won," Sandberg said. "He made some good defensive plays."

The Phillies have gotten very little from the center field spot this season, as the team is hitting just .260/.306/.293 from that spot. 


Tony Gwynn in, Ben Revere out of Saturday lineup

(5/3/2014) Slumping Phillies center fielder Ben Revere has been given the night off Saturday against Washington and has been replaced by Tony Gwynn.

Revere had six multi-hit performances in seven games before going hitless in the last two. He is batting .287, but two walks and a .301 on-base percentage on the season are not strong for a leadoff hitter.

(3/31/2014) Phillies outfielder Tony Gwynn showed up to camp this spring needing to play his way onto the 25-man roster. Not only did Gwynn make it onto the roster, he made it into the opening day lineup Monday against the Rangers, starting in left field and batting eighth.

Gwynn hit .273 (12 for 44) with one home run, four doubles, five RBI and seven runs in 22 spring games.

Phillies bring four aboard on minors deals

(12/18/2013) The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Phillies signed the following players to minor league deals Wednesday: catcher Lou Marson, outfielders Tony Gwynn and Dave Sappelt and pitcher Sean O'Sullivan. Each player received a spring training invite.

Marson began his major league career with the Phillies, but has spent the last four-and-a-half seasons with the Indians.

Gwynn spent most of 2013 at Triple-A Albuquerque in the Dodgers' system, hitting .300 with 12 steals. Sappelt appeared in 31 games with the Cubs and compiled a .240 batting average.

O'Sullivan made three starts and four relief appearances for the Padres last season and went 0-2 with a 3.96 ERA.
