Phillies give Guzman, Maza minor deals


(2/4/2010) The Phillies signed outfielder Freddy Guzman and Luis Maza to minor league contracts Wednesday. They are expected to be invited to spring training camp.

Dodgers finalizing 25-man roster


(4/5/2009) Shortstop Chin-Lung Hu, shortstop Juan Castro, first baseman Doug Mienkiewicz, second baseman Luiz Maza, outfielder Jason Repko, outfielder Xavier Paul, catcher A.J. Ellis, pitcher Jeff Weaver, pitcher Eric Stults, pitcher Tanyon Sturtze, pitcher Erick Threets, pitcher Brian Mazone, pitcher Brad Halsey, pitcher Joshua Lindblom and pitcher Eric Milton did not make the Dodgers' inital 25-man roster Sunday. Also, Will Ohman was purchased from the minor leagues and added to the 25-man roster Sunday.

Maza re-signs with Dodgers


(1/15/2009) The Sports Xchange notes that INF Luis Maza re-signed with the Dodgers, getting a minor league contract. Maza finally made his big-league debut last season after nine years in the minors and batted .228, playing 16 games at shortstop and 35 at second base.

(1/9/2009) The Dodgers have agreed to terms with 15 free agents, including longtime big league shortstop Juan Castro. The Dodgers said Thursday they also agreed to terms with right-handers Yhency Brazoban, Travis Chick, Nick Debarr, Edgar R. Martinez and Scott Strickland; left-handers Carmen Cali, Brian Mazone, Jacobo Meque, Stephen Randolph and Erick Threets; first basemen-outfielders Mitch Jones and Valentino Pascucci; and infielders Hector Luna and Luis Maza.

(5/26/2008) Dodgers 2B Jeff Kent, batting .143 in May and .228 overall, got a day off Sunday against the Cardinals. Rookie Luis Maza took his place and drove a 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence in the first inning for his first career home run. He finished 2-for-3.

Maza makes major league debut


(5/15/2008) The Sports Xchange notes that INF Luis Maza made his major league debut Wednesday, entering at shortstop in the bottom of the ninth inning at Milwaukee after Delwyn Young pinch hit for Chin-lung Hu. Maza's contract was purchased from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, marking the first time in his 10-year professional career that he received a call-up. Maza didn't have a ball hit to him in the inning.

Dodgers might call on Maza


(5/12/2008) Dodgers SS Rafael Furcal will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of a lower back strain that has caused him to miss Los Angeles' last five games. Team spokesman Mark Rogoff said Furcal would go on the disabled list retroactive to May 6, making him eligible to return May 21. They'll replace Furcal on their 25-man roster before the game, possibly with infielder Luis Maza, who has been playing at Triple-A Las Vegas. Chin-lung Hu is expected to start in Furcal's absence.
